NLE Choppa Vows To Retire From Rap To Become A ‘Full-Time Herbalist’

NLE Choppa has made quite a splash as an entertainer over the last handful of years since exploding onto the scene with his January 2019 single “Shotta Flow.” Since then, he’s become a Hot 100 mainstay and XXL Freshman, reached No. 10 on the Billboard 200 chart with his debut album Top Shotta, and worked with some of the industry’s heaviest hitters, including 50 Cent and hometown hero Juicy J. However, it looks like he might be ready to walk away from it all in favor of a new career: Herbalism, aka herbal medicine.

In a tweet, he vowed to “buy out my contract and become full time herbalist,” citing his wish to “help my people” as the reason behind his decision to “forget the music stuff.”

The decision wasn’t a sudden one; over the past year, Choppa has gradually embraced a mindset of personal and spiritual growth, encouraging meditation and plant-based diets. He even went so far as to challenge fellow Memphian Moneybagg Yo to give up lean for chlorophyll as a response to the elder rapper’s fascination with the purple stuff, as documented in his hit song “Wokesha.”

Unfortunately, NLE Choppa’s beliefs have also led him to share some dangerous misinformation as well. He previously tweeted vaccine conspiracy theories, which he’s adamantly held to ever since.

NLE Choppa Is Being Sued By An Outkast-Affiliated Rapper For Copyright Infringement

NLE Choppa is being sued by Outkast-affiliated rapper Kilo Ali for copyright infringement in a suit filed in California Central District Court last week (June 24), according to Music Business Worldwide, which obtained the court documents.

Ali, an Atlanta-based rapper who released a string of relatively successful albums throughout the ’90s and worked closely with members of the Dungeon Family crew, including Goodie Mob’s Cee-Lo Green and Outkast’s Big Boi, as well as George Clinton of Parliament and Lil Jon, says Choppa’s 2020 single “Make Em Say,” which features Latto (FKA Mulatto), illegally samples Ali’s own 1997 “Love In Ya Mouth,” using the same “flow and pitch” in the post-chorus.

“Love In Ya Mouth,” which features Big Boi, featured on Kilo Ali’s 1997 Interscope debut Organized Bass, and in the documents filed in the suit, Ali says his music has “proven inspirational to much of the rap music emerging from the South, particularly Atlanta.” Meanwhile, Choppa and Latto’s song appears on Choppa’s Warner Music debut Top Shotta. The lawsuit argues Choppa’s song features “a distinctive sample of Kilo Ali’s melodic vocal chorus from the sound recording embodying the Original Work.” Ali wants “all gains, profits, and advantages derived by Defendants as a result of their unfair trade practices and unfair competition” by way of restitution and has included Warner Records Senior Vice President of A&R Norva Denton and Warner Music Group in the lawsuit.

NLE Choppa Challenges His Fellow Rappers, Including Moneybagg Yo, To Give Up Lean For Chlorophyll

NLE Choppa has been on a health kick recently, promoting plant-based diets and meditation. While the dark side of his newfound interest has meant surprising fans with vaccine conspiracy theories and snake-oil sales pitches for dubious cancer “cures,” for the most part, Choppa’s encouraged his followers to embrace self-improvement. His latest effort is an “anti-lean” challenge which he issued on social media, appealing to his fellow rappers to give up the purple drank by substituting chlorophyll.

““I Have A New Challenge For Rappers,” he wrote. “For Every Pint of Lean, Or Even Alcohol, Drink A Pint Of Chlorophyll. I Wanna Start By Challenging @MoneyBaggYo I’ll Bring This To You Personally Fam.” He also added a link to an online shop where he’s pitching bottles of the stuff, as well as some kind of “detox tea” and baggies of seamoss. Notably, he tagged fellow Memphian Moneybagg Yo in his challenge, perhaps prompted by Moneybagg’s recent post calling his single “Wockesha” “the official lean national anthem.”

Choppa isn’t the only rapper to give up lean in recent years. In 2019, Future, one of the drink’s biggest proponents over the past decade of rap, admitted that he quit but didn’t say anything publicly because he feared losing his fans, while Smokepurpp, Mustard, and more were inspired to quit by a rash of overdoses including Lil Peep’s and Mac Miller’s.

NLE Choppa Pens An Emotional ‘Love Letter To My Daughter’ To Coincide With Father’s Day

Children in all corners of the world are honoring their dads as Sunday marks Father’s Day. Whether it be classic gifts like a mug or a few new ties, dads from all over are surely enjoying the day. This includes NLE Choppa who is the proud father of a young girl. While the day is certainly his to kick back and relax, the Memphis rapper opted to share a song that captures the love he has with his daughter. Entitled “Love Letter To My Daughter,” the emotional track arrives with a video that shows a softer and more reflective side to the young rapper thanks to intimate moments with his daughter.

The rapper’s new video comes amid an up and down year for him. He recently became one of the latest rappers — joining DaBaby, Mulatto, Pooh Shiesty, and others — to deliver a “Beat Box” freestyle, one NLE Choppa used to celebrate his release from prison.

Two days before the song’s arrival, though, he was arrested in Florida on suspicion of burglary, carrying a concealed firearm, and possession of drugs including Xanax and weed. He posted a $4,500 bond and was released from jail shortly after. Elsewhere in the year, he’s shared videos for “Moonlight” and “Picture Me Grapin,” the former being a track with Big Sean.
