OG Maco is currently recovering and is stated by his family to be in “critical but stable condition.” The official statement released on Maco’s X account, follows rumors and a report by TMZ of attempted suicide.
“We want to inform OG Maco’s fans, friends, and supporters that he is currently in critical but stable condition,” the statement reads. “He is receiving the best possible care, and we are staying hopeful as he continues to fight. At this time, we kindly ask that you respect our privacy, but if you would like to send any messages or have anything you wish to get to the family, please reach out via DM.”
Trap rap pioneer OG Maco (real name Benedict Chiajulam Ihesiba Jr.) is fighting for his life after an alleged suicide attempt. Today (December 14), the “U Guessed It” rapper’s longtime friend and manager Poppa Perc has provided fans with an update regarding his medical condition.
In a brief post on Instagram (viewable here), Perc informed supporters of Maco’s now updated status. “We all wanna thank you for praying for OG Maco,” he wrote. “He’s still fighting. He’s in a more stable condition, and it’s better than what he was two nights ago.”
He went on to say when further news would be shared with him and the family. “We won’t know too much until Monday for now please keep praying ,” he said.
Yesterday (December 13), Perc slammed the platform Say Cheese after they falsely reported OG Maco died as a result of his injuries. “Say Cheese is capping right now,” he wrote in his Instagram stories. “Maco is still in ICU.”
Shortly after, Perc spoke about the matter with AllHipHop. “He’s still on life support, still fighting,” she said. “They are doing multiple tests on his brain and trying to let the swelling go down a bit, let his head heal a little bit, so they can do a procedure. Only immediate family is allowed at the hospital, but we’ve been getting updates.”
Atlanta rapper OG Maco has reportedly been hospitalized after an apparent suicide attempt, according to TMZ. The rapper was found in his home, unresponsive, after a neighbor called 911 to report a gunshot. He was rushed to the hospital with an apparently self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head and entered surgery, although was still alive as of the report.
When we discuss trap rap pioneers, we all too often leave OG Maco out of the conversation. The College Park rapper rose to prominence in 2014 with his debut single “You Guessed It,” signing to Quality Control Music that year and appearing on the XXL Freshman Class cover the following year. He was arguably the spark that launched QC to prominence; his presence helped revitalize interest in the guttural style of trap music popularized by “You Guessed It,” and you can see elements of his goth-inspired style in rappers from the area and the era such as Playboi Carti and early Lil Uzi Vert. In addition, his production partner, OG Parker, has become one of rap’s most coveted collaborators.
However, after the runaway success of “You Guessed It,” Maco experienced a downturn in his fortunes, prompted in part by his own comments. Bitter about the lack of success of his follow-up singles in comparison to “You Guessed It,” he lashed out on Twitter, downplaying the song’s reception (much as Doja Cat would do years later, albeit with more positive results). In 2022, he maintained in interviews that he’d been “blackballed” by Quality Control, saying the label refused to promote his work with the same fervor as signees such as Migos, City Girls, or Lil Yachty.
He was also left with a vision impairment by a car crash in 2016, in which he fractured his skull and cracked multiple vertebrae. Meanwhile, in 2019, was diagnosed with a flesh eating bacteria, causing scarring on his face.
