21 Savage And Blxst Lend New Verses To Fireboy DML’s Latest ‘Peru’ Remix

Nigerian singer Fireboy DML took a huge step in crossing over to US success in 2021 with his tropical single “Peru” — especially after adding British singer Ed Sheeran to its remix earlier this year, launching the single onto the Billboard Hot 100 chart. Today, Fireboy gave the single a shot of added adrenaline with another new remix, this time tapping trap rap superstar 21 Savage and emerging West Coast crooner Blxst to contribute similarly optimistic verses to the upbeat single.

In his verse, 21 Savage brags about his success over the past few years, boasting that he’s accumulated “twenty million dollars in a year and that’s with no shows.” Meanwhile, Blxst offers a romantic stanza of his own, pining for the company of a woman who makes him ponder changing his plans. “I’ve been wanting you so bad / That you might make me backtrack,” he rhymes. “Might just fly away / Just touched down from MIA.”

Fireboy’s toehold on US pop culture has steadily increased over the past year after collaborating with burgeoning talents like D Smoke on “Champion” and established stars such 6lack on “Sere.” By this time next year, he could very well be one of the can’t-miss talents from his home country who are leading Afrobeats’ mainstream takeover, joining such stars as Davido and Wizkid at the forefront of the genre’s globalization.

King Von And 21 Savage’s Colorful ‘Don’t Play That’ Video Pairs Cuddly Animation With Vicious Lyrics

In the video for King Von’s new single “Don’t Play That,” the late Chicago rapper and guest 21 Savage engage in street-certified shenanigans, but as cutesy, animated avatars courtesy of director Cartune. The cartoony visuals contrast with the grimy content, creating a lighthearted sense of fun amid the dark subject matter.

In their verses, the two rappers filter their gun talk through their relationships with women, with Von boasting, “She fell in love with a shooter / I caught that girl playin’ with my Glock.” Meanwhile, 21 Savage echoes that sentiment, sneering, “I fell in love with the gun smoke / She caught me playin’ with my K.” Meanwhile, their bars play out in vivid computer animation, with their characters brandishing firearms and carousing with women. The song is the first single from Von’s upcoming posthumous album, What It Means To Be King, due March 4 via Only The Family/EMPIRE.

Meanwhile, Von isn’t the only one dropping new music soon. Savage recently hinted that a new album could be on the way, tweeting in January, “No album in a year and a half tho…it’s time.” He hasn’t been idle in that time, though, most recently contributing verses to fellow Atlantans JID and Gunna, while dropping two new singles of his own.

King Von Isn’t Up For Any Games On His Posthumous ‘Don’t Play That’ With 21 Savage

This past November marked one year since Chicago rapper King Von was shot and killed at a nightclub in Atlanta. Von’s death occurred during his rise in the hip-hop world, which was boosted by his 2020 project, Welcome To O’Block. Since his death, Von has been honored in multiple ways — especially by Lil Durk, who often referred to him as “twin.” As for music from the latter rapper, most of his releases have come in the form of guest features, but today that changes with Von’s latest single.

Von and 21 Savage join forces for “Don’t Play That.” The track serves as another example of Von’s straight-to-the-point raps which left little to no room for any fun or games. It’s this approach that makes 21 Savage a perfect guest for the song as he provides cut-throat bars for his verse on the song. Prior to this single, King Von made a posthumous appearance on the F9 tracklist after his estate released videos for “Mine Too,” “Jump,” and “Armed & Dangerous.”

As for 21 Savage, he recently joined JID and Baby Tate for “Surround Sound.” That collaboration arrived after he ended 2021 with two new songs: “No Debate” and “Big Smoke.” Additionally, Savage also declared that it’s time for a new album which should come as good news to his fans.

Broccoli City Festival Is Returning In 2022 With 21 Savage, Ari Lennox, And Of Course, Wale

Here’s some great news for residents of the DMV area: Beloved hip-hop and R&B festival Broccoli City is returning for the first time in three years after being canceled due to COVID concerns in 2020 and 2021. The festival’s organizers announced the dates and lineup today after the two-year hiatus, bringing a worthy selection of both hometown heroes and national favorites to the RFK Festival Grounds in Washington DC on May 7 and 8.

From the local side of things, Broccoli City has booked Ari Lennox, Masego, Rico Nasty, and of course, festival mainstay and DC’s unofficial rap ambassador Wale. Elsewhere on the bill, trap rap faves 21 Savage, Gunna, and Jeezy will bring the Atlanta sound to the stage, while drill pioneers Lil Durk and Babyface Ray will bring that unique sound. Rising stars Alex Vaughn, Don Toliver, Joony, Joyce Wrice, Larry June, Muni Long, and Tems will bring a variety of vibes, with Nigerian superstar Wizkid contributing some Afrobeats to round things out.

The last Broccoli City festival that actually went on as planned took place in 2019, headlined by Childish Gambino and Lil Wayne. Interestingly enough, it also featured Gunna and Wizkid on the bill, so it’s nice to see them returning and bringing the festival full circle in its return.
