Redveil Shines Once Again On “WHEW LAWD (Freestyle)”

You are not going to find many other dual threats like redveil in today’s game. Still just 20 years old, the Maryland rapper and producer still has so much untapped potential. However, when you listen to him, it might not sound like it. He really got a lot of people’s attention back in 2022 with his sophomore record, learn 2 swim. It was a terrific blend of jazz, soul and hip-hop and featured the songs like “diving board” and “pg baby”, among other fine deep cuts.

He also dropped a shorter project last year called playing w/ fire, but we think we can speak for most fans when we say we want to hear a new album. While we impatiently wait for that, redveil has been holding folks over with some dope freestyles. One of them that we enjoyed quite a bit was “DRAMA”, which released later last year to YouTube and Soundcloud. But the man returned just last night with “WHEW LAWD”, which showcases his spectacular producing and rapping chops again.

Listen To “WHEW LAWD (Freestyle)” By Redveil

“WHEW LAWD” sees him incorporate a soul sample beautifully into the energetic and stank face-inducing beat. To give himself a pat on the back for this fire freestyle, he likens himself to Kanye West in a hilarious but apt way. You can tell that he is inspired by the Georgia legend, as early Ye was always chopping up the soul samples. However, redveil also loves him some Denzel Curry, as the inflection in his voice sounds nearly identical on this cut. It is a small nitpick as to why he is still has some ways to go as an artist, but we would be foolish to not give the track its flowers.

What are your thoughts on “WHEW LAWD (Freestyle)” by redveil? Is this the best freestyle of his career, why or why not? Do you think he is due to drop a new album this year? What aspect of the song did you enjoy the most? Is he one of the best dual threats we have right now? We would like to hear what you have to say, so be sure to leave your thoughts in the comments section below. Quotable Lyrics:

The raps with the beats rеminiscent of Kanye
But I got hella jеwish homies, so it’s just kinda-
I said I’m 1 of 1 if you need a reminder
And Veil don’t f*** with no one, in da stu where you find him
And I ain’t sweatin’ nothing, boy, I trust divine timin’
But I ain’t never been this fuckin’ hungry for shinin’

Who Is Redveil? Meet The Maryland Rapper

Although Uproxx has covered Redveil a bit over the past couple of years, I can’t say I was all the way tuned in — that is until I saw him perform at Camp Flog Gnaw a couple of weeks ago. I think I can truly say I Get It now, and if you’ve been wondering about this semi-obscure but rapidly rising name in hip-hop, don’t worry; as usual, we’ve got you covered.

At just 19 years old, the Maryland native has already established himself as a force to be reckoned with in hip-hop and forged some pretty impressive connections on the way. In June this year, he appeared on the Danny Brown podcast, getting advice about getting booed offstage early in your career (there’s little danger of that happening to Redveil, though).

The young rapper has used those connections to land some on some pretty impressive collaborators’ albums and features, including Chance The Rapper, Denzel Curry (with whom he toured earlier this year), and Jpegmafia and Danny Brown’s Scaring The Hoes. He also opened on tour for Freddie Gibbs last year, exposing him to an even larger audience.

So far, he’s self-released three albums (Bittersweet Cry, Niagara, and Learn 2 Swim) and one EP (Playing W/ Fire, released early this year), establishing himself as a consistent producer and a formidable lyricist, even as he finds his footing both in the industry and in life. It’s early days, but with supporters like Brown, Curry, Gibbs, JID, and Tyler The Creator, I can see him becoming a star worth following.

Redveil’s Talents Are On Full Display With “DRAMA (Freestyle)”

When some people make comments about rap music losing its edge or creativity, they are dead wrong. There are so many innovators just in the past few years. Some to list off are JID, Denzel Curry, Baby Keem, and Don Toliver, the list is insane. We even have some that are making waves in the underground scene like redveil. The 19-year-old from Washington D.C. might be the cream of the crop when it comes to young, bubbling stars in the making.

To be honest, redveil might already be in the star conversation. With his jazz rap-inspired beats and wicked lyrical ability, he is a force to be reckoned with already. If he wants to he can get into his aggressive trap bag as well, which is exactly what he does on his new song “DRAMA (Freestyle).” He is all business on this cut getting braggadocious and hyping up his originality. Unfortunately, it has not hit streaming platforms at this current moment, but you can find it on YouTube with the attachment below.

Redveil Has Got Next

Right away redveil comes into the mic hot with bold claims with a trunk-knocking beat and soul chop. He says that he is basically one-of-kind and no one can really top him. Redveil also takes shots at other artists for putting on fronts that they original when really they are biting off others. The youngster has already earned the respect of Tyler, The Creator, and others in the industry, and he is sure to gain more of it very soon. With the rap collective Odd Future being a big influence, he is also being compared to others like Denzel and JID too, and for good reason.

What are your thoughts on this brand new track, “DRAMA (Freestyle)” by redveil? Is he one of your favorite new rappers out right now? Do you think he will get as big as artists like Denzel Curry or JID? We want to hear what you have to say, so be sure to leave all of your thoughts and opinions in the comments section below. Additionally, always keep it locked in with HNHH for all the hottest new song releases and all of the latest breaking news around the music world.

Pigeons & Planes Shares ‘See You Next Year’ Album, Executive Produced By Mike Dean

Throughout Pigeons & Planes’ history, we’ve had a lot of bad ideas. Once we tried to set up an interview with Danny Brown while he was holding a sloth (he doesn’t know this), before learning that there are all kinds of legal guardrails when it comes to handling sloths in the state of New York. Another time we rented an Airbnb and decided to shoot music videos on the slightly questionable roof. If someone had been injured, there’s a chance P&P would not exist today. And then, of course, there’s the video series idea we had called Pizza From Behind (I promise it’s not what it sounds like), but we won’t get into that today.

The point is, we’ve thought about making a lot of things that never saw the light of day. That’s what happens when you come up in the blog era and realize that corporate interests, copyright laws, and shifts in technology can change everything at any given moment. You get antsy, you accept that nothing lasts forever, and out of sheer panic that your time is near, you start vomiting up absurd ideas under the guise of productive brainstorming.

A Pigeons & Planes compilation always felt like one of those absurd ideas. We’d talk about making an album at least once every year, but it never happened. For years, we’ve been a small team making music-related content for the internet, curating playlists, and producing concerts—officially releasing a project of original music always felt out of reach.

Over the last two years, that panic turned into a realization that the world is going to shit and we’ve got to try to make some of these far-fetched ideas happen. Naturally, our first instinct was Pizza From Behind. It’s gotta be Pizza From Behind. We shared that idea with a few people, and their reactions were a clear signal: “No, the world isn’t ready. Make the album.”

And so, we finally decided to make an album. We partnered with Big.Ass.Kids and ADA, and we started reaching out to artists we love asking for songs. Surprisingly, most said yes. Then we posted about it on Instagram before we even had any music. We said, “We’re making an album!” And Mike fucking Dean commented on it: “You need an executive producer to finish it.”

We laughed, because obviously it was a joke, but soon after we’re on a Zoom with Mike Dean and it turned into not-a-joke. Mike Dean agreed to executive produce the project.

Months later, we’ve actually got a full album and it’s out on all platforms today. We’ve got incredible new songs from Teezo Touchdown, Terry Presume, Redveil, Fana Hues, EKKSTACY, Wallice, Dreamer Isioma, Brevin Kim, Ben Reilly, Baird, and Sash—you can read more about each of them here. The artists all got in sessions with Mike Dean and he mixed and mastered the whole thing. I’m not one who appreciates the intricacies of mixing and mastering as much as I probably should, but I can tell you this: Mike Dean is a genius and he made this whole project sound bigger, better, and more cohesive. He also turned out to be the perfect fit for a Pigeons & Planes project—he’s open-minded, down to earth, and his love for music is obvious in everything he does.

HK designed the cover. It was another shot in the dark but fuck it, we had Mike Dean involved, so why not reach out to HK? Years ago, before we knew we could make an album, we made a SoundCloud mixtape. This was back in the day before Brockhampton was a famous boyband, and HK designed the cover to that project. So having him back for See You Next Year is a full-circle moment.

The album is called See You Next Year for a lot of reasons—some are obvious, others not so much, and it’s all probably better left unsaid. But one reason we liked this title is because it sets us up to make this an annual event. Who knows if we’ll do that. As previously mentioned, we think about a lot of things that never happen, but we really hope that this is an exception. Making this album was a labor of love, long days, and frequent reminders that we are so lucky to do work that involves so many talented creatives. We have many more stories to tell because of this album, and we’ll get to those soon.

For now, here is the very first P&P compilation album, See You Next Year. Thank you to all of the artists for being a part of it, and to everyone who brought this project to life.

See you next year.

Chance The Rapper Reunites With Supa Bwe To Remind Us All That ‘ACAB’

Two years removed from the 2020 uprisings over the deaths of George Floyd and Breonna Taylor, it doesn’t seem like much has changed in the US. Calls to defund police departments across the nation were more or less ignored (or outright defied), and in just one month, the number of headlines reporting police shootings of citizens is frankly kind of alarming.

Thus, Chicago rapper Supa Bwe has returned with his first new song of the year, reuniting with his old friend Chance The Rapper to remind us that “ACAB.” The new song, built over a plodding beat and featuring additional guest appearances from 7000 and Maryland underground rap rising star Redveil, takes the corrupt institution to task, with all four rappers calling out the overall failure to honor the “protect and serve” motto throughout the past few… well… forever.

According to Supa Bwe’s Instagram, the song is the first single from his upcoming project No Thanks, which is also his first project since 2019’s Jaguar. 2019 also contained “Rememory,” Supa’s last collaboration with Chance The Rapper, on the Just Say Thank You EP. Meanwhile, Chance recently expanded his own collaboration catalog, teaming up with Dionne Warwick on the soul legend’s “Nothing’s Impossible.” While he hasn’t been as busy on the music front since dropping The Big Day in 2019, there’s no time like the present for him to get busy on a follow-up.

Listen to “ACAB” above.
