Joey Badass Says He Drew From Real-Life Experiences For His ‘Power Book III’ Role

Ahead of the season premiere of Power Book III: Raising Kanan tonight, Joey Badass spoke with HipHopDX about his role. On the show, Joey plays a drug kingpin named Kadeem “Unique” Mathis.

Joey‘s performance has received much praise, and in the interview, he said he drew from real-life experiences of witnessing drug deals growing up in the Bed-Stuy neighborhood of Brooklyn.

“I always been around that stuff, but I never took that path because it was right there,” Joey said. “I wanted to challenge myself to do other things, and then I had good older cousins and family that pushed me to not do that because they were doing it. It would’ve been easy for me to do it, but they wanted to see better for their little cousin and nephew…So it was easy to just kind of pull from those experiences that I’ve had or those observations that I made as a kid.”

Over the years, Joey has built an impressive acting resume, with stints on Mr. Robot, Grown-ish, and Wu-Tang: An American Saga. Elsewhere in the interview, Joey said that acting, to him, comes as easily as making music.

“Acting, in general, comes pretty instinctively to me…just in a way where you kind of go somewhere else. Like on that stage, I gotta go into superstar mode. I’m still here but it’s like a superstar hangover, but when I’m home, it’s a different vibe where I’m chill.”

Season 2 of Power Book III: Raising Kanan premieres tonight at 9 p.m. EST on Starz.

Joey Badass’ newest album, 2000, is out now via Columbia Records. Stream it here.

Chance The Rapper Performs With Joey Badass, Plays A Game, And Chats With Jimmy Fallon On ‘The Tonight Show’

Last night, Jimmy Fallon hosted The Tonight Show, as he does every night. Chance The Rapper borderline outpaced him in terms of screen time on yesterday’s episode, though, as he was all over the program.

First, he sat down for a chat with Fallon. During the interview, he reminisced about the 10-year anniversary of his 10 Day mixtape, noting how he was opening for Childish Gambino before its released and noticed an increase of fans showing up to see him perform once the tape dropped. He also discussed his and Vic Mensa’s upcoming music festival in Ghana and collaborating with artists from around the world.

Then, the two played a round of “Hey Robot,” where they have to get Amazon Echo to say a certain word without using the actual word themselves. Chance absolutely nailed it, not failing even a single word.

Later in the program, he and Joey Badass performed their recent collaboration “The Highs And The Lows.” Chance had a simple but effective stage design and did something pretty neat on a broadcast level, too, having the lyrics display word-by-word via an on-screen overlay that updated throughout the performance.

Beyoncé Removes Ableist Lyric From ‘Renaissance’ Single “Heated”

One of Beyoncé’s new singles, “Heated,” is under scrutiny as it is being labeled as ableist.

In the single, Beyoncé sings, “Spazzin’ on that ass, spazz on that ass.” According to Variety, the song will be edited to not use “spaz” as the term is associated with the medical term “spastic,” a disability in which people can’t control their muscles, specifically in their arms and legs.

A statement from Beyoncé’s team confirms the lyrics will be altered. “The word, not used intentionally in a harmful way, will be replaced,” the statement reads.

Earlier this year, Lizzo’s “Grrrls” single was also under fire for being ableist after using the same term.

Speaking about the new single and unknowingly using the word “spaz” on Twitter, Cardi B revealed she would have responded with “Suck My Dick.” Cardi was included in the conversation about the single with her past collaborator and sounded off to a Twitter user.

“Ya will do mental gymnastics to include me in anything that people are getting dragged for,” Cardi wrote. “People have called me out for plenty of shit .Yall do it every week SOMETHINGS I apologize for & some things I will tell y’all TO SUCK DICK & personally If I was Lizzo I would of said SMD!”

The use of “spaz,” according to The Cambridge Dictionary, is “an offensive way of saying ‘a stupid person.’” The word is also “(short for ‘spastic’) an offensive way of referring to someone who has cerebral palsy (a condition of the body that makes it difficult to control the muscles).”

Lizzo would apologize and also release an updated version of the single, which you can hear below.
