Syd Says She ‘Wasn’t In A Good Place’ During Her Odd Future Days

Syd returns with her much-anticipated second studio album Broken Hearts Club this month. Ahead of the album’s release, the “CYBAH” singer spoke with NME about the creation of her new project and the events leading up to it.

Looking back at her days in Odd Future — the hip-hop collective comprised of the likes Tyler The Creator, Frank Ocean, and Earl Sweatshirt — Syd admitted she doesn’t think about those moments fondly.

“It feels like a lifetime ago,” Syd said. “I don’t have any real memories of that time. I was just floating through it. I wasn’t in a good place then and so I don’t really reminisce on those moments.”

In the early 2010s, Odd Future became infamous for their homophobic and misogynistic lyrics. While the men of the group were revered for their craft, Syd, then known as Syd Tha Kid, was often the one held accountable by the public for the group’s behavior. The openly queer singer left Odd Future in 2016 and released her solo debut album, Fin, the following year.

Earlier in the interview, Syd, who is also the lead vocalist of The Internet said, “The next Internet album will also be our last. I have no idea what’s next. I don’t know. Maybe we’ll create an Internet label. We talked about that — just signing ourselves.”

Arlo Parks Delivered A Woozy Cover Of Kaytranada And Syd’s ‘You’re The One’

Spotify loves to give rising artists a look with their Spotify Singles program, and this year they’re highlighting Best New Artist nominees at the Grammys in an interesting way. The premise is that each Best New Artist nominee will do a cover from the discography of a past nominee, adding their own twist and getting their name out into the ether again, whether they win or lose on the big night. For instance, earlier this month Finneas covered Bon Iver’s “Flume” for his contribution. But keep in mind, losing in this category is just as likely to predict a fruitful career as winning in it!

Anyway, Arlo Parks is a nominee this year, and she decided to cover Kaytranada and Syd’s “You’re The One” for her contribution to Spotify Singles. “Why it was such a joy to record my Spotify Singles session in the studio, I felt somehow part of the legend,” Parks said in a statement about the cover. “Syd’s voice in ‘You’re The One’ always had this effortless beauty to it in my eyes and I wanted to cover it to expose the romance and yearning behind the lyrics. It was an honour to be able to sing my new song ‘Softly’ too, to highlight the beginning of a new and beautiful chapter in my career and celebrate being nominated for Best New Artist.”

Check out Arlo’s cover below, and tune into the Grammys this Sunday, April 3, to see who picks up a win in this coveted category.

Syd Announces ‘Broken Hearts Club’ Set for April 8, Releases “Could You Break A Heart” with Lucky Daye

unnamed 6

Syd is back! The GRAMMY Award-winning singer, songwriter, producer, and engineer, has announced the release of her sophomore album, Broken Hearts Club, on April 8th, 2022. Broken Hearts Club, which features collaborations with Kehlani, Smino, and Lucky Daye, as well as additional production from Grammy-winning producers Troy Taylor, G Koop, and Darkchild, chronicles the ebbs and flows of a relationship from beginning to end and is performed, co-written, and co-produced by Syd herself.

Arriving with the album announcement is the new single “Could You Break A Heart.” The new song pairs Syd with Lucky Daye and tackles trust issues in a new relationship.

“The album is about a relationship I had that ended in my first real broken heart,” Syd said of the forthcoming album. “It almost felt like I joined a club because all of my friends went through similar experiences. It was like a rite of passage. I started writing the album on the relationship when I was in love. You’re really getting the whole journey from the beginning to the end. I want people to find it beautiful. It’s super vulnerable, sentimental, and it’s soft. There’s touching moments and a couple of dark moments.”

Syd And Lucky Daye Show Their Hesitance Towards Love On ‘Could You Break A Heart’

Over the past thirteen months, Syd has done a decent job at keeping her fans satisfied with new music. The singer, who is also the lead vocalist of alternative R&B band The Internet, kicked things off with “Missin Out,” which she released last February. At the time, the song was her first solo release his her 2017 projects Fin and Always Never Home. Since then, the singles kept coming but there was no sign of a new project, until now. Syd arrives in 2022 with not only a song, but a special announcement.

Syd returns with Lucky Daye by their side for their new single, “Could You Break A Heart.” It marks the pair’s first song together and on it, they share their hesitance towards starting a new relationship by asking their partners if they’re capable of breaking a heart and making them endure the pain that comes with it. The track also arrives with a futuristic visual to support the new song.

In addition to the new song, Syd announces that her sophomore album Broken Hearts Club will arrive next month on April 8. It will feature 13 songs with appearances from Lucky Daye, Smino, and Kehlani.

Syd And Smino Look To Keep Things On The ‘Right Track’ With Their New Collaboration

It’s safe to say Syd has something special on the way for her faithful listeners. The singer’s last solo project came in at the end of 2017 with Always Never Home. The 3-track EP came months after she released her solo debut album, Fin. From the looks of it, it appears a second dose of the latter could be on the way, but until that is confirmed, fans can enjoy her latest single, “Right Track” with Smino. The new release is a change in tempo for the singer’s often breezy and chilled-out songs. In the song, Syd and Smino use a giddy beat to beg for trust and commitment from their partner while promising that they’ll reach the next level together if things stay on the “right track.”

Syd’s latest single arrives after as her third track of the year. She launched her 2021 campaign with February’s “Missing Out,” a track she described as an “anti-Valentine’s Day ode” while singing about her partner’s inability to “spend the proper time trying to work it out.” Months later she returned with “Fast Car,” a more positive record focused on the intimate moments a couple spends together when they ignore the rest of the world. “I wanted to make something for the gay Black girls,” Syd said about the song. “I want them to see themselves in this and in me.”

Syd Enjoys The Best Intimate Moments With Her Partner In A ‘Fast Car’

While her most recent work with The Internet, the band for which she serves as a lead vocalist, came in 2018 with Hive Mind, Syd’s lone solo album arrived in 2017 with Fin. Now, it appears that the singer may have another solo effort on the way as she returns with her second song of the year. Syd drops “Fast Car” with a breezy video that finds the singer and her partner enjoying intimate moments together from the comfort of a Jeep. After finding a comfortable spot, the pair seems to find a quiet spot to enjoy each other’s company, that is, until Syd’s friend arrives to interrupt their peace.

Speaking about the song in a press release, Syd shared her intention behind the song. “I wanted to make something for the gay Black girls,” she said. “I want them to see themselves in this and in me.” Her new single comes five months after she dropped “Missing Out,” an effort she released back in February and labeled as an “anti-Valentine’s Day ode.” On it, she spoke and her struggles with a lover and their inability to “spend the proper time trying to work it out.”

Prior to “Fast Car” and “Missing Out,” Syd linked with Kehlani and Disclosure for “Birthday” and contributed to Lil Uzi Vert’s “Urgency” and Free Nationals’ “Shibuya.”

A Mac Miller Book With Stories From His Friends And Collaborators Has Been Set For Release This Fall

Since then, his estate has released one album, Circles, completed with the assistance of Mac’s collaborator Jon Brion, while fan-favorite mixtapes like KIDS and Faces have found their ways to DSPs in the years since. Two new songs were released in August last year.
