Roddy Ricch’s Grammys Performance Of ‘The Box’ Was Literally Epic

Roddy Ricch has become well-acquainted with the Grammy Awards committee and viewers, receiving three nominations and winning one at last year’s ceremony. This year, he not only added six new nominations to his growing collection but also performed at the ceremony, delivering a sweeping rendition of his song “The Box,” prefaced by a snippet of “Heartless.” The performance was literally epic, featuring a demolished Greek god statue, with Roddy playing a grand piano and backed by a harp.

The Compton rapper has certainly had more Grammy success than his youth and relative inexperience would suggest, thanks in large part to his proximity to the late, great Nipsey Hussle. Their 2019 collaboration “Racks In The Middle” won Best Rap Performance at the 2020 Grammys, just months after he released his debut album Please Excuse Me For Being Antisocial. The song was also nominated for Best Rap Song, while Roddy’s Mustard collaboration “Ballin’” was nominated for Best Rap/Sung Performance.

This year, he’s got even more bites at the apple thanks to his two 2020 No. 1 hits. While his TikTok-favorite solo single “The Box” is up for Best Rap/Sung Performance, Best Rap Song, and Song Of The Year, Roddy’s collaboration with DaBaby, “Rockstar,” has them both anticipating potential wins for Best Rap Song, Best Rap/Sung Performance, and Record Of The Year. The duo performed the song with “Da Baby Boomers” earlier in the evening.

DaBaby Employs A Choir In HIs 2021 Grammys Performance Of ‘Rockstar’ With Roddy Ricch

DaBaby is a rapper with a gift for puns, but his performance of “Rockstar” at the 2021 Grammys gave host Trevor Noah such a good setup, it’s almost shocking they didn’t shut the whole thing down immediately after. Backed by a choir of silver-haired, elder singers — comparisons were made to the Supreme Court, which still runs overwhelmingly old and white — DaBaby was joined by Roddy Ricch and Anthony Hamilton for a blown-out performance, with Noah dubbing the backup singers “The Baby Boomers” when all was said and done.

DaBaby and Roddy share three nominations this year for “Rockstar,” which has them both anticipating potential wins for Best Rap Song, Best Rap/Sung Performance, and Record Of The Year. DaBaby’s “Bop” was also nominated for Best Rap Performance, although Megan Thee Stallion secured that award for herself earlier in the evening in the non-televised portion of the proceedings for her Beyonce-featuring song “Savage.” Meanwhile, Roddy himself is nominated for Best Rap/Sung Performance, Best Rap Song, and Song Of The Year for his TikTok-favorite solo single “The Box.”

After his performance, DaBaby barely had time to remove his sparkly driving gloves before returning to the stage to support Dua Lipa on her “Levitating” performance, still shining in his all-white suit.

OMB Peezy Was Reportedly Arrested In Connection With The Roddy Ricch And 42 Dugg Video Shooting

Sacramento rapper OMB Peezy has been arrested in connection with the shooting on an Atlanta music video set two weeks ago, according to XXL. The well-established hip-hop magazine confirmed via Fulton County court records that Paris LeDade — better known as OMB Peezy — was arrested Monday, March 1 for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony for an incident on February 21, the day of the shooting. Peezy’s bond is set at $40,000 — $30,000 for the assault and the rest for possession of a firearm.

Born in Mobile, Alabama, Peezy relocated to California before high school and has since shuttled back and forth between the two cities, maintaining roots to both the Bay Area post-hyphy and Southern trap sounds. He most recently released the mixtape In The Meantime while working on his next album, the follow-up to 2019’s Preacher To The Streets, dropping the “Dope Boys” video with Rylo Rodriguez in early February. Unfortunately, it seems art imitated life in this situation, leading to the arrest and fans’ concern that 42 Dugg and Roddy Ricch, the two rappers whose video set the shooting occurred, were injured or worse.

However, Roddy and Dugg very quickly allayed those concerns, confirming that they were not among the three people injured in the shooting. No motive for the shooting has been reported as yet.

Roddy Ricch Marks Himself Safe After Shots Were Fired At His Video Shoot

It looks like new music is on the way from Roddy Ricch, whose breakout track “The Box” dominated charts this summer. But unfortunately for the rapper and his crew, shots rang out on set at a video shoot Sunday. Several hours after the news broke, Ricch has now taken to social media to let fans know he was unharmed.

Per a report from WSB-TV Atlanta, Ricch and his collaborator 42 Dugg were filming at a scrap yard in south Atlanta when shots were fired. 42 Dugg took to his Instagram Stories to clarify that he did not get shot and thanked his followers for their concern. Now, Ricch has similarly marked himself safe in a tweet. “aint nobody shoot at me. we all good,” he wrote following the incident. “im juss tryna feed the streets.”

Two members of the film crew, Antoine Blake, and Vernon Moulder, were hit by the bullets but were able to take themselves to a nearby hospital. Another attendee of the video shoot, Peter Cook, was injured by debris resulting from the chaos. Teresa Lakes, a medic who was on set to assist with COVID screening, described the scene, “Everyone started running, trying to get out or take cover; lot of places to take cover in there,” she said. “Anyone that was injured, I laid hands on ’em to make sure they were OK. Just glad it wasn’t a lot worse than it could have been… could have been worse.”
