Kid Cudi Showed Love To ‘That Weird Little Flute’ In Rap Songs In An ‘SNL’ Sketch

It was just a few years ago that Future’s “Mask Off,” and the infectious flute that was present on the song, took the music world by storm. The track is just one of many rap records to feature a heavy presence of the woodwind instrument. It’s a quality that caught the eye of Kid Cudi and a few Saturday Night Live cast members as they delivered a sketch in honor of “that weird little flute.”

Cudi, along with Pete Davidson and Chris Redd, joined forces for a song that finds them flaunting their own flutes and expressing their love for it. Later on in the skit, Timothée Chalamet joins in on the fun musical sketch.

In addition to the sketch, Cudi was the musical guest for the SNL episode. He performed “Sad People” and “Tequila Shots” and the former caught the attention of most viewers as Cudi stepped on stage rocking an Off-White floral dress, noticeably similar to the one Kurt Cobain famously wore. Following the performance, Cudi shared his intention with the dress in a pair of tweets. “Virgil designed the dress for me. I told him I wanted to show love to Kurt w a floral print sundress and this man made a masterpiece,” he said. “Thank You @virgilabloh ur a f*ckin genius!! Love you man we did it!!!” In a second tweet, he added, “Im doin a collection w Off White and the dress will be included!!”

Kid Cudi Honors Kurt Cobain And Chris Farley In ‘SNL’ Performances Of ‘Sad People’ And ‘Tequila Shots’

Just a few months removed from the release of his seventh solo album, Man On The Moon III: The Chosen, Kid Cudi brought his talents to the stage of Saturday Night Live. The rapper rocked out in a pair of performances of songs from that album, but it was his wardrobe for the night that got the attention of viewers the most.

Kicking off the night with “Tequila Shots,” Cudi stepped out to the mic wearing a T-shirt that featured actor, comedian, and former SNL cast member Chris Farley, who tragically passed away in 1997 from a overdose at just the age of 33 following a lengthy struggle with drug addiction. Later on in the night, Cudi returned, this time donning an Off-White white floral dress, one that was very similar to the one Kurt Cobain famously once wore. The Nirvana frontman also struggled with drug addiction before his tragic suicide in 1994. Cudi has expressed his love and appreciation for Cobain on a number of occasions. In a past interview with GQ, he said, “I try to use [Cobain] as my muse whenever I can.”

Cudi’s decision to honor Farley and Cobain could have been influenced by DMX’s recent passing. The Yonkers rapper died on Friday after a reported drug overdose that caused a heart attack and left him hospitalized for nearly a week.

St. Vincent And Kid Cudi Are Booked To Perform On ‘SNL’ In April

Every so often, Saturday Night Live unveils their next lineup of hosts and performers by sharing the names unceremoniously scribbled on Post-it Notes. The brightly-colored sticky notes have once again returned to disclose which musical acts have been booked for the first two episodes in April, revealing that St. Vincent and Kid Cudi are set to take the late-night stage. Jack Harlow is also featured in the announcement, although his upcoming appearance was revealed last month.

St. Vincent has been booked for SNL on April 3, almost exactly a month after the singer announced her anticipated album Daddy’s Home, which is slated for a May release. She’ll be appearing alongside host Daniel Kaluuya, who recently starred in the Oscar-nominated film Judas And The Black Messiah. St. Vincent’s performance will mark the second time the singer has been invited to play her music on the SNL stage since 2014.

Following St. Vincent’s episode, Kid Cudi will take the SNL stage on April 10, hosted by Carey Mulligan. Kid Cudi previously appeared on the show back in 2018 to make a cameo in a sketch with Kanye West, but April’s episode will be the rapper’s musical debut on the program.

Sharing the news on social media, St. Vincent expressed her excitement: “Saturday Night Live has been my favorite show since I was a kid and I can’t believe I get to play it AGAIN,” she wrote.

Kid Cudi Says He’s ‘Pissed And Heartbroken’ That He Was Unable To Collaborate With Juice WRLD Before His Death

More than two years ago, Juice WRLD requested a collaboration with Kid Cudi through a post he shared on Twitter. That tweet arrived months before his breakout hit “Lucid Dreams.” Unfortunately for him, he would never get to work with Cudi as Juice tragically passed away in December 2019 from a seizure that occurred while he was at Chicago’s Midway International Airport.

During a recent interaction with fans on Twitter, the Man On The Moon III rapper expressed his frustration with being unable to work with both Juice WRLD and late Florida rapper XXXTentacion.

“Im really am pissed and heartbroken I never got to link w these guys,” he said. “X and Juice were real ones. Loved what they brought to the game. It was beautiful to witness.”

The tweet came in response to a fan who commended Cudi for embracing “the fallen legends.” He also revealed that a posthumous collaboration with Juice, entitled “Good Times,” exists, but issues with clearing the song have halted its release.

“Who knows man they holdin that song hostage for a check,” Cudi revealed. “I feel like if Juice was alive it woulda been came out. I really dont know.”

All in all, Cudi promised to be more open to working with new artists. “Im no longer gonna be afraid of connecting w cats,” he said. “I always felt like I wouldnt be able to live up to the love. I was always scared. But not anymore.”

Cudi’s tweets come nearly a year after he reminisced about meeting Juice WRLD for the first time at the 2019 Coachella festival.
