Calvin Harris And 21 Savage Cash In On Some Summer Fun With The Groovy ‘New Money’

Calvin Harris is back with the second offering from his upcoming album Funk Wav Bounces Vol. 2, tapping 21 Savage for his new single “New Money.” It is an arena the “A Lot” rapper has never found himself in, but much like his feature run over the last year and some change, he floats with ease over the angelic piano keys and soothing drums.

“New Money” follows the lead single “Potion” featuring Dua Lipa and Young Thug. This past week, the Scottish DJ shared the list of features for his long-awaited Funk Wav Bounces Vol. 2 through an oceanic album trailer. The album will include contributions from 6lack, Chloe, Tinashe, Snoop Dogg, Charlie Puth, Halsey, Justin Timberlake, Latto, Pusha T, Offset, and more. Vol. 2, set to release on August 5, comes five years after Funk Wav Bounces Vol. 1, headlined by the major singles “Slide” featuring Frank Ocean, Quavo, and Offset and “Feels” with Pharrell Williams, Katy Perry, and Big Sean. If the first album is any indication, Vol. 2 will be placing many people’s favorite artists in soundscapes they’ve likely never been in before, but Calvin Harris knows what he’s doing.

In a summer where listeners will have already received Drake’s Honestly, Nevermind and Beyonce’s Renaissance Part 1, led by “Break My Soul,” the “This Is What You Came For” artist may very well be providing the sounds aligning with that song’s title.

Calvin Harris Announces The ‘Funk Wav Bounces Vol 2’ Release Date And Features

Calvin Harris’ first Funk Wav Bounces album, which was released in June 2017, has become something of a cult favorite among dance music fans, who’ve agitated for a follow-up ever since. Harris recently began the rollout for Funk Wav Bounces Vol. 2, dropping its first single, “Potion” featuring Dua Lipa and Young Thug, in May. Today, he finally shared the project’s long-awaited release date: August 5. He also teased the guestlist via a short video of waves crashing on a sunny shore with the names flashing across the screen.

Those names include 21 Savage, 6lack, Charlie Puth, Chloe, Halsey, Jorja Smith, Justin Timberlake, Latto, Lil Durk, Normani, Offset, Pharrell, Pusha T, Shenseea, Snoop Dogg, Stefflon Don, and Tinashe.

Ironically, there couldn’t be a better time for Harris to return with Funk Wav Bounces Vol. 2, as a new wave of dance music — particularly dance music crafted by some of the world’s biggest entertainers — appears to be cresting. Just weeks ago, Drake surprise-dropped his club-influenced new album, Honestly, Nevermind, prompting a renewed interest and discussion of Black musicians in the art form, then Beyonce followed up with her new single “Break My Soul,” which even had national news programs looking up vocal house legend Robin S. to get her take on the out-of-nowhere revival of Black house music.

Drake Gets An 11th No. 1 Single As His And 21 Savage’s ‘Jimmy Cooks’ Debuts Atop The Hot 100

Drake recently shocked the world with Honestly, Nevermind, due to both the album’s surprise release and its unexpected dance style. The album has its haters, but it seems those are massively outweighed by supporters who have sent it to the top of the charts: Honestly, Nevermind just debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200, and now the album’s 21 Savage collaboration “Jimmy Cooks” (the only song on the album with a feature, actually) has debuted atop the new Hot 100 chart dated July 2.

Two other Honestly, Nevermind songs also debuted inside the top 10: “Sticky” at No. 6 and “Falling Back” at No. 7. Drake, Future, and Tems’ “Wait For U” is also at No. 4, giving Drake four total top-10 songs this week.

The latest No. 1 moves Drake up the all-time list of most chart-toppers in Hot 100 history: With 11 total, he’s now tied for seventh place behind The Beatles (20 No. 1 songs), Mariah Carey (19), Rihanna (14), Michael Jackson (13), Madonna, and The Supremes (12 each). Whitney Houston also has 11 No. 1’s. “Jimmy Cooks” is the second No. 1 song for “Savage,” following his and Post Malone’s “Rockstar.”

Meanwhile, Drake is actually now tied with The Beatles for the most top-5 songs, both with 29. “Jimmy Cooks” is also Drake’s record-extending seventh song to debut at No. 1, after “God’s Plan,” “Nice For What,” “Toosie Slide,” “What’s Next,” “Way 2 Sexy,” and “Wait For U.”

YG Is On The ‘Run’ With Tyga, BIA, And 21 Savage In Their Mischievous New Video

It’s very possible that YG could give us his third project in as many years with the impending release of his sixth solo album. He concluded 2021 with the release of “Sign Language,” accompanied by a sunny video strapped with lowriders. After that, he returned alongside J. Cole and Moneybagg Yo on “Scared Money,” a track he later performed with the latter rapper on The Tonight Show. There’s no word on when YG’s sixth album will arrive, or even what it will be called, but we’re taking one more step towards it with his new single “Run” which places YG alongside Tyga, BIA, and 21 Savage.

On the new track, the four rappers speak about their mischievous lives while flexing their flashy spending and partying habits. In its matching video, YG and Tyga appear as a notorious criminal duo known as the Calabasas Sisters. They rob and bank away and make a run for it as BIA and 21 Savage help to make sure that their getaway is successful.

YG’s latest track arrives after he teamed up with Mozzy for their collaboration project Kommunity Service last summer. That project was a brief one with just ten songs but it also flaunted appearances from Blxst, Ty Dolla Sign, Young M.A, G Herbo, A Boogie Wit Da Hoodie, Tyga, and others. As for YG’s last solo project, that arrived back in 2020 with My Life 4Hunnid, a 13-track effort strapped with appearances from Lil Wayne, Chris Brown, Tyga, Lil Tjay, Ty Dolla Sign, Lil Mosey, Calboy, and more.
