Roy Woods Is Ready To Get Freaky On “Hold Still”

It’s been almost a full year since Roy Woods put out a solo single, but this weekend ends that drought in the form of “Hold Still.” The R&B singer with ties to Drake’s OVO has been busy assisting other artists over that period such as Flau’jae, Lithe, Dimi, and PARIS. But he did drop a project in 2023, which was also his first in six years with Mixed Emotions. That went on to include features from Coi Leray, Jada Kingdom, and Vory. Over the course of his career, he has put out a lot of loosies. That’s what he was doing in between 2017-2023. But hopefully, this latest Roy Woods release isn’t just one of those.

One of the reasons why is because his fans are really eating it up. The 2016 era was a memorable one and it seems it left an indelible mark on everyone. They could also be referencing Roy’s introduction year (2015), as that spawned tracks like “Drama” with Drizzy, “Get You Good” and more. These cuts had a dreamy quality to them and that’s what “Hold Still” possesses too. Additionally, listeners are enjoying the late night vibes it evokes. It’s certainly got that going for it also, as Roy is singing passionately about how he wants to rock this woman’s world. ” If you need more convincing, here are a few testimonials. “Sounds like some early Roy and I am soooooo here for it 🥳🥳. ” “2016 Roy is back 🥲🫶🏼

“Hold Still” – Roy Woods

Quotable Lyrics:

I’m tryna do some things to your body
I’m tryna do some things now that I’ve got your body
Emotions running deep since you saw me
It’s been so long, tryna go crazy on your body
Lil’ baby, bring that body
That lil’ wet, wet, that tsunami

Roy Woods Is Playing No Games On “4am”

Drake’s OVO label has some underrated artists on it. Roy Woods is one of them for sure. The Brampton, Canada native was buzzing during 2015 with the release of his debut EP, Exis. That is the project that featured Drizzy on “Drama,” which is sitting on a high streaming number.

In fact, it has over 455 million streams. It also featured solid deep cuts as well, such as “Get You Good.” Roy kept up the pace in 2016 and 2017 with three more projects. Those being Nocturnal, Waking at Dawn, and Say Less. However, it would be six years until the rapper and singer’s next full-length tape. When smaller artists take a long break from dropping albums, fans usually tap out.

Listen To “4am” By Roy Woods

But, it seems with Roy that the fans were willing to wait. The streaming numbers are there. Even though the project dropped in July, the same day as UTOPIA, Roy’s loyal listeners still checked it out. Now, he is continuing to feed them with a new aggressive single, “4am.” He is as mean as ever with some truly braggadocious and threatening bars.

What are your initial thoughts on this brand-new single from Roy Woods, “4am?” Is Roy Drake’s best protege? Are you still listening to his last record, Mixed Emotions? We would like to hear what you have to say about all of this. With that in mind, be sure to leave all of your hottest takes in the comments section below. Quotable Lyrics:

And you know if it’s on a problem then it’s on sight
And my n**** just died, but I’m alright
Keep my diamonds in the cold like a klondike
Had to show these little n****s how to ball tight
Did a feature, now he soundin’ what I sound like
If I send my dogs on you, they gon’ all bite

Roy Woods’ New Album ‘Mixed Emotions’: Everything To Know Including The Release Date And Tracklist

Roy Woods has been a slow-burner since signing with Drake’s OVO Sound imprint, releasing his Say Less LP in late 2017 and the six-song EP Dem Times in May 2020.

“After an almost three-year wait, one would expect a full-length project to emerge from Roy Woods as it did with his labelmates. Instead, Dem Times serves as the segue between chapters, one filled with anticipation and energetic sounds that would have performed well in the summer that once was. The EP doesn’t shine as brightly as his debut album did, but its components give hope in the Brampton native’s future,” Uproxx’s Wongo Okon surmised while reviewing the EP.

And now, it has been another three years since Dem Times, and Woods is finally primed to deliver Mixed Emotions the full-length that his fans have been expecting.

Below is everything to know ahead of the album’s release.

New Music From Tinashe & Roy Woods Appears On Our “R&B Season” Update: Stream

Before we say goodbye to yet another weekend, we’ve got a handful of hot new tracks to share with you on our R&B Season playlist. Last Sunday it was Justin Timberlake’s sensual return on Coco Jones’ “ICU (Remix)” that pulled at our heartstrings, but today (July 23), it’s Mario’s turn to take the lead. The renowned vocalist connected with Lil Wayne and Tyga for his latest, “Main One,” which landed alongside an accompanying visual on New Music Friday. After that comes another noteworthy collaboration from some of R&B’s finest – Ty Dolla Sign and Chris Brown – called “Motion (Remix).”

This week’s update is far more male-dominated than we’ve seen in the past, but music lovers definitely aren’t complaining. Holding it down for the women is Tinashe, who’s making her mark on “Talk To Me Nice,” as well as the ever-ethereal Snoh Aalegra. The latter’s new single is called “Be My Summer,” and it’s the perfect seasonal love song to send to anyone who’s weighing on your mind romantically at this time.

HNHH R&B Season Playlist

Our recommendations don’t stop there. Canada’s Roy Woods continues to impress us with his string of singles that have landed so far in 2023. Recent efforts include “Young Boy Problems” and “Don’t Mind Me,” but as July comes to a close he’s back with “Test What I Know.” If you’re looking for something sure to set the mood for a night of dancing, Burna Boy and Byron Messia’s “Talibans II” will surely do the trick. Elsewhere, our final pick of the week comes from “GOD DID” collaborator Fridayy, who proudly flexes his vocal chops on “When It Comes To You.”

If any of those sound like your jam, you can stream the entirety of this weekend’s R&B Season update exclusively on Spotify. Are there any recent arrivals that you think we missed?
