PARTYNEXTDOOR Is “4” The Fans On Our New “R&B Season” Playlist Update: Stream

HNHH‘s R&B Season playlist is back to round up the best releases from the various styles adjacent to the genre that came out this week, and there’s a big one to speak on right away. Moreover, PARTYNEXTDOOR finally delivered on all the hype and dropped his long-awaited fourth studio album PARTYNEXTDOOR 4 (P4). Not only does the Toronto artist deliver plenty of his trademark style on this full-length, but he also taps into sounds that he’s not immediately associated with, such as the breezy African-inspired rhythms on “F o r C e r t a i n.” If you want that classic PND sound, though, look no further than cuts like “N o C h i l l,” and you’ll be right back in that zone again.

Elsewhere on R&B Season, we have another sultry and minimal single from Normani titled “1:59,” and it features none other than Gunna for a pretty interesting crossover. Through some simple guitar licks, building vocal harmonies, stark percussion, and atmospheric effects, it’s able to keep things woozy while still having a solid melodic center. As for the College Park MC, his voice actually goes even harder than his collaborator on this cut when it comes to the passion and the strain in his voice. It’s a nice zone to see him in, especially for those looking for him to at least try to switch it up.

However, if you’re looking for more of that Afro-soul sound, there’s another highlight on R&B Season this week. Tems came through with an interpolation of Seyi Sodimu’s 1997 classic “Love Me JeJe,” which is as wondrous and welcoming as it is loosely chilled-out. Across much of the Nigerian singer’s catalog, a lot of her strengths owe themselves to her strong vocal chops, charismatic performances, and her ability to build out a tune. Needless to say, these are all elements that keep on giving.

Finally, we wanted to shout out the tender, bubbly, and crisp collab between Chenayder and MAVI, “Colors.” This is easily among the jazziest and most head-bobbing picks this week thanks to a warm vocal performance from the former and a killer verse from the latter. Jorja Smith, Lucky Daye & RealestK Fill Our New “R&B Season” Playlist Update: Stream

Another week, another R&B Season playlist update to round up the best of what the genre and its adjacent sounds had to offer this week as far as new releases. While we don’t have too much to talk about this time around, we wanted to focus on three cuts that really stood out among the rest of the pack. Moreover, the first of these is Jorja Smith’s reimagined version of her falling or flying cut, “Greatest Gift.” This time around, the percussion takes a bit of a softer approach, and it definitely feels a little more acoustic as far as the mix goes. In any case, it’s a curious comparison and one that doesn’t take away anything from the original while making this reimagining its own highlight with a killer piano solo.

Next up on our R&B Season playlist update is the latest single from Lucky Daye, “HERicane.” In contrast to the last track we talked about, this is a much funkier, more colorful, more vocally dynamic, and more summery offering that previews hotter months quite well. It’s got that disco charm despite a pretty stylistically different approach to the drums in particular, but it’s able to evoke an old-school sound without sounding too campy or dated. Overall, it just sounds really crisp and rich thanks to a lot of great interplay between its many instrumental and vocal elements.

Finally, we wanted to shout out the new single from RealestK, “Let Me Go.” What starts off as a sultry piano ballad eventually introduces those slow, minimal, and woozy rap-inspired percussion that sets the mood effortlessly. Vocally, this song is incredibly hazy, which can sometimes work to its detriment when the falsettos start to hit, but there’s also plenty of added atmosphere through background singing that makes up for it a bit. For those of you that want your contemporary R&B to stick to the most current traditions, this one’s probably for you.

PARTYNEXTDOOR & Tinashe Prove Their Stardom On Our New “R&B Season” Playlist Update: Stream

We’re almost a third of the way through 2024, and ahead of the summer, it looks like we’ll be getting even more amazing music. Moreover, we’ve got our newest update of our R&B Season playlist, rounding up the best the genre’s sphere of influence had to offer this week. First up is PARTYNEXTDOOR, who’s continuing to build up a lot of hype for his next album dropping very soon. This time, it’s via the slow-burning and DMX-sampling “Lose My Mind,” which is pretty much exactly what fans expect from the OVO crooner. The vocal performance is dynamic, the instrumental is sultrily atmospheric, and it indicates that P4 will be a fitting return for his style.

Next up on R&B Season this week is the “Nasty” new single from Tinashe, which is a more cheekily seductive and playful cut compared to “Lose My Mind.” Furthermore, the melodies are well-defined, catchy, and paired with a minimal but still bouncy beat. Along a similarly fun vein that’s more perky than provocative, we have the latest cut from Jordan Ward, “Player Two,” from the Don’t Tell Mom The Babysitter’s Dead remake film. The main draws here are the St. Louis talent’s charisma and the tight musicianship on display, creating a bubbly and sunny vibe that we can’t get enough of.

As for, in our opinion, the best R&B-related material to drop this week, we have to shout out Baby Rose’s collaborative EP with BADBADNOTGOOD, Slow Burn. Through six gorgeous cuts of deep but tender vocal showings and crisp, soulful instrumentation, their talents mix seamlessly for a warm and comforting experience. Check out “Caroline” if you want a taste. Speaking of projects, we have to shout out the vibrant and effortlessly genre-fusing debut album from Nia Archives, Silence Is Loud. If you want to see just how simultaneously frenetic and chilled-out her skills can go, we’d specifically recommend the song “Cards On The Table.”

Bryson Tiller Is Finally Back On Our New “R&B Season” Playlist Update: Stream

HotNewHipHop‘s R&B Season playlist update is back, rounding up some of the best genre-adjacent releases of the week for your convenience. Leading the pack is the brand new self-titled album from Bryson Tiller, on which there are many different highlights to name. Particularly, though, we wanted to show love to two tracks that contributed to this comeback’s fulfilling and impressive nature. Victoria Monét adds her gorgeous vocals to the bass-heavy, smooth, and chemistry-filled “Persuasion,” a fitting title for such an intoxicating cut. Another highlight is “Assume The Position,” which takes more of a dance-inspired direction with warped vocal chops and a solid house rhythm.

Meanwhile, another R&B Season standout this week was Kehlani’s “After Hours,” which is a creative and much more wavy flip of Nina Sky’s 2004 classic “Move Ya Body.” It takes on a much more tropical and vibrant instrumental pallet than the original, making for a sultry and breezy effort. While it’s not the most mind-blowing vocal performance on the planet, the song definitely succeeds in its mission to put you in a vibe. All we can hope for is that there’s more great material where this came from for 2024.

As for a more up-and-coming star still making his mark, 4batz just dropped his On The Radar freestyle “put yo gun 2 use.” Compared to the high-pitched, moody, and nocturnal sound offered on his previous singles, this is a much more light, sunny, and measured cut on R&B Season that still retains the mystery and wooziness behind his artistry. The drums on here feel particularly crisp and overwhelming in the mix (and sound like the same ones used on classic cuts like Slick Rick’s “Children’s Story”), and some vocal harmonies and additional refrains make this more dynamic than a standard off-top performance. Overall, it’s nice to hear this evolution.

Finally, we wanted to shout out Khalid’s melancholy and slow-burning single “Please Don’t Fall In Love With Me” for its emotional resonance and dreamy atmosphere. Halle & Don Toliver Tune Our Moods On Our New “R&B Season” Playlist Update: Stream

Our new R&B Season playlist update is here to round up the best of the best releases in the genre of the week, and we have a lot of variety and quality to wade through. Guiding us through that is the new single from Halle, “In Your Hands,” which is a perseverant, passionate, and dramatic record. With subtle but soothing guitar playing, a dynamic vocal performance, and well-measured swells, this is probably one of the more inspirational or grand cuts you’ll hear this week. On the more wavy and chill tip, we have a brand-new song from Don Toliver, “Deep in the Water,” which is rhythmically very creative in its fusions and is paired with some chilling but charming synth patches.

As far as trademark contemporary R&B, though, few tracks will put you in that zone this week quite like PARTYNEXTDOOR’s new single “R e a l W o m a n.” P4 can’t come soon enough for fans, because this is exactly the type of sultry, low-tempo, and entrancing track that they’ve been waiting for years for. Along a similar vein, mixing soulful sensibilities with trap instrumentation, we have SZA and Cardi B’s remix of Flo Milli’s “Never Lose Me.” There’s great chemistry between all these female forces on this light and relaxing beat, and the melody will drill itself into your head with ease.

Meanwhile, we also have a big album to cover this week in Justin Timberlake’s Everything I Thought It Was. As a pop record, it plays with a lot of sounds and styles, but the melodies and dancehall inspirations on “Liar” with Fireboy DML are a fitting inclusion here. If you want more modern R&B, then check out PARIS.’s new track “BNB,” a straight-up trap beat with dexterous vocal melodies on top. It won’t be the most original cut you’ll hear on this update, but the charisma and cheeky lyrical matter will get you into the song’s vibe.

Finally, our favorite release of the week has to go to Baby Rose and BADBADNOTGOOD’s absolutely gorgeous single “One Last Dance.” Rose’s voice is deep, delicate, but so wondrous and emotive, whereas the combination of organ, light drums, woodwinds, guitar plucks, and more on here create something truly enchanting. Drake Endorses 4batz On Our New “R&B Season” Playlist Update: Stream

First up is a potential rising star with a bright future ahead and one heck of a co-sign to send him to the next level. 4batz got a remix from none other than Drake for his viral hit “act ii: date @ 8,” a moody, low-key, and minimal ballad. As for The Boy’s contributions to the original, he provides some smooth vocals on the cut’s slowed-down portion, and it’s pretty much exactly the effect you’d expect.

Another highlight on our R&B Season playlist update this week is the new single from Mustafa, “Imaan.” The Toronto artist of Sudanese origin came through with a very tender and delicate track here, led by soft acoustic guitar and with some gorgeous string arrangements to give it an extra punch. The light drum beat keeps things steady, and it’s overall a very soothing and almost healing experience. It might be a bit out of your comfort zone if you’re a hardcore R&B fan, but if you look past the aesthetic differences, you can see the persistent quality and parallel when it comes to the songwriting and the emotions evoked in the record.

BNYX’s rendition of Muni Long’s “Made For Me” takes its strong melodies and passionate performance and turns it into a layered and enveloping Jersey club jam. Back to traditional singles, though, there’s a similar bounciness to Chase Shakur’s new release, the song “YOLANDA.” Instead of Jersey, Shakur pulls from the realm of D&B and garage to make a dreamy and more cavernous song than this catalog’s typical output.

Another standout track this week was the hazy and sultry “Show” by Sango featuring Rochelle Jordan. Finally, we wanted to shout out Fridayy’s new single “Without You,” which is another grand and powerful vocal performance in his track record. Our R&B Season playlist is back to round up some of the genre’s best adjacent releases of the week, and its first addition sets a moody tone moving forward. Moreover, 4batz continues his rise to the higher echelons of industry popularity with their new single, “act iii: on god? (she like).” It’s a pretty ethereal, melancholy, and slow-moving ballad that moves away from the rap fusions of previous singles like “act ii: date @ 8,” which is what we featured on here. Given the interesting dichotomy between his image and his actual vocal tone and singing style, this might go down as one of the most interesting careers to follow in 2024.

Furthermore, another great but more established artist on our R&B Season playlist update is Chloe Bailey, better known as Chlöe. Her new single “FYS,” or “F**k Your Status,” is a sultry and atmospheric offering that also goes in a slower and more drowsy direction. The In Pieces singer also moves between a couple of different-paced flows and deliveries to give some extra dynamism to the otherwise static and intoxicating sonic pallet. She already dropped a full-length last year, but fans hope that she reunites with her sister Halle for more music soon.

Meanwhile, the only project on display for this R&B Season playlist update is Kenyon Dixon’s new EP The R&B You Love: Soul Of The ’70s. It expands on his 2023 album, and features the gorgeous, tender, and romantic “Can I Have This Groove.” Not only that, but the project’s title is actually a really solid indicator of what this take on the genre sounds like if you’re familiar with 1970s releases. It may not move with the wildest progressions, but the musicianship and execution is sharp and locked in.

Finally, we wanted to shout out two more singles that you should give a try. “You Don’t Call Me” by PxRRY and featuring JON VINYL and Tone Stith, plus Honey Bxby and Busta Rhymes’ “Touchin’,” are two opposite ends of energy and vibrance that nail both approaches. SZA, SiR & Justin Timberlake Complete Our “R&B Season” Playlist Update: Stream

There’s not a lot to cover on our R&B Season playlist update this week, but we still rounded up our absolute favorite drops this week for your convenience and pleasure. Leading the way is the brand-new track from SZA, “Saturn,” which she had previewed at the 2024 Grammy Awards and then released in multiple versions (sped-up, acapella, instrumental, etc.). With bright synth piano keys, a crisp and echoed percussive pattern, and the St. Louis native’s trademark buttery vocals, this song puts you in a trance very quickly. Although SOS dominated 2023, we’ll never complain about new Solana material to keep us under her spell, of which there should be more very soon.

In addition, we wanted to shout out the new single from Justin Timberlake, “Drown,” on our R&B Season playlist update. Whereas the pop star’s most famous material might be more bombastic and club-ready in many’s eyes (or ears, rather), this new song proves that some of his greatest strengths have always been in charismatic melodic performances, woozier tempos, and more intoxicating additions to a sonic atmosphere. Minimal drums, airy synth chords, and a measured but nevertheless engaging vocal performance make this a relatively dreamy cut. It does sound very clean and sanitized, but its adherence to R&B tropes and production, plus a nice beat variation, keep us listening.

Finally, we wanted to give the TDE crew special props on R&B Season, as label mates SiR and Isaiah Rashad dropped off another hazy track with “Karma.” This is another single for the former’s upcoming project, which is shaping up to be a low-key but well-crafted and highly compelling offering. With this new record, the two artists show off a lot of chemistry while lyrically diving into the concepts of karma and riding a dry but stankface-inducing drum beat with ease. We can’t wait for what’s next!

Beyonce Runs The World On Our New “R&B Season” Playlist Update: Stream

February is ramping 2024 up to be a big year for music, and our R&B Season playlist update is here to round up the best of the best. Leading the way is none other than Beyoncé, who just released two new country songs ahead of her Act II album dropping later this year on March 29. “16 CARRIAGES” is definitely the softer of the two cuts, with a slow tempo, rough stomps and kicks, echoing claps, and atmospheric string and organ arrangements. On the other hand, “TEXAS HOLD ‘EM” has more of a traditional hoedown swing and gorgeously light and breezy guitars and banjos.

Next up on our R&B Season update is the new song from Jessie Reyez for the Bob Marley film, One Love. Her rendition of “Is This Love” is a bit of a sultrier and more woozy take on the original classic, with even more wah-heavy guitar licks and more elaborate vocal harmonies. Other tracks for this project have also given fresh spins on these untouchable anthems, and it’s been at least curious to see these new treatments. Reyez in particular does a great job of paying tribute to the reggae legend’s tone and delivery here.

Furthermore, we also wanted to shout out the new cut from Amaal Nuux on here, “Late To The Party.” This week, this is the song that adds a more contemporary production feel and hip-hop fusion on our R&B Season update. It’s still indebted mostly to soul, but the sharp snares, simple kick pattern, and occasional cowbell hits would envelop a lot of different fans of different genres. To top it all off and bring it all together is a delicate performance from the Somali-Canadian singer-songwriter.

Finally, we wanted to give a shoutout to Emotional Oranges’ new single, “Ready.” The snaps and watery production here roots this firmly in ’90s inspiration, and the modern sheen on the vocals and reverb effects give it a nice touch. Usher & Little Simz Get Grand On Our New “R&B Season” Playlist Update: Stream

It’s a big month for new music releases, and our R&B Season playlist update is here to round up the best soulful jams from this week. Leading the way is a massive one, which comes paired with an even more massive event. Moreover, Usher previewed his Super Bowl halftime show with a brand new album, COMING HOME, which released over the weekend. It has a lot of different melodic styles, aesthetic approaches, and dynamic displays of his vocal range and songwriting talent. If you’re looking for a couple of tracks to clue you into the project, we’d recommend “Kissing Strangers” and “Stone Kold Freak” as particular highlights.

Furthermore, our R&B Season update also contains a pretty big team-up between superstar artists in the fields of R&B and hip-hop. Of course, we’re referring to the new collaborative single between Jermaine Dupri, Nelly, Ashanti, and Juicy J, which is titled “This Lil’ Game We Play.” It’s a fast-paced and heavily danceable jam with a lot of personality, lust, and plenty of charisma from its artists. It’s been a long time since we got a radio-style song that encompasses pure fun, and nothing more to crowd up the mix.

In addition, the most underrated pick on our R&B Season update is easily the new release from Tommy Richman, a dual single with “SOULCRUSHER” and “WHAT DO U LIKE.” Specifically, we want to shout out the latter for its creative flip of Jersey club rhythms in a wavier and more melodically constant atmosphere than what those beats typically match with. It’s a pretty catchy song with simple synth embellishments and a lot of layered harmonies. If there’s something more long-form on the way from Richman, we can’t wait to dive in.

Finally, for the best music release of the week, we have the one and only Little Simz’s new EP, Drop 7. Similar to “WHAT DO U LIKE,” which brightened and re-contextualized Jersey club, Simz’s “Far Away” revitalizes those drums, while also giving the same treatment to drill.
