Jorja Smith, Lucky Daye & RealestK Fill Our New “R&B Season” Playlist Update: Stream

Another week, another R&B Season playlist update to round up the best of what the genre and its adjacent sounds had to offer this week as far as new releases. While we don’t have too much to talk about this time around, we wanted to focus on three cuts that really stood out among the rest of the pack. Moreover, the first of these is Jorja Smith’s reimagined version of her falling or flying cut, “Greatest Gift.” This time around, the percussion takes a bit of a softer approach, and it definitely feels a little more acoustic as far as the mix goes. In any case, it’s a curious comparison and one that doesn’t take away anything from the original while making this reimagining its own highlight with a killer piano solo.

Next up on our R&B Season playlist update is the latest single from Lucky Daye, “HERicane.” In contrast to the last track we talked about, this is a much funkier, more colorful, more vocally dynamic, and more summery offering that previews hotter months quite well. It’s got that disco charm despite a pretty stylistically different approach to the drums in particular, but it’s able to evoke an old-school sound without sounding too campy or dated. Overall, it just sounds really crisp and rich thanks to a lot of great interplay between its many instrumental and vocal elements.

Finally, we wanted to shout out the new single from RealestK, “Let Me Go.” What starts off as a sultry piano ballad eventually introduces those slow, minimal, and woozy rap-inspired percussion that sets the mood effortlessly. Vocally, this song is incredibly hazy, which can sometimes work to its detriment when the falsettos start to hit, but there’s also plenty of added atmosphere through background singing that makes up for it a bit. For those of you that want your contemporary R&B to stick to the most current traditions, this one’s probably for you.

Meanwhile, we wanted to ask what your favorite release of these was, as well as what else we missed this week that’s worth some praise. Let us know your thoughts and recommendations down in the comments section below. Also, if you haven’t heard any of these songs or our R&B Season playlist before, make sure to check it out above. As always, come back to HNHH for more news from your favorite artists and the latest releases around the clock.

Jorja Smith “Falling Or Flying” Album Review

Jorja Smith’s 2018 debut album, Lost & Found, was a culmination of both uncertainty and self-discovery. A series of experiences, it consisted of songs that she wrote from the ages of 16 to 20. It was a promising display of talent where Smith realized her full potential. Five years removed from Lost & Found, Smith has found herself as she has continued to deliver the honest and heartfelt soul that she is known for. She reinforced her greatest musical strengths on her 2021 EP, Be Right Back, which bridged the gap between her debut and her latest work. This time between albums has clearly allowed Jorja Smith to develop her skill set for Falling or Flying, her second album and boldest release yet.

Artistic Growth

Since Lost & Found, Jorja Smith has experimented with various musical styles, including jazz, dancehall, amapiano, and beyond. On Falling or Flying, she continues to flourish while discovering new musical territory. Smith floats over the lively dance instrumental on “Little Things,” a standout single that lends fun energy to an emotional album. There is also “GO GO GO,” a pop-rock anthem that displays her limitless versatility. Compared to the many somber moments on the album’s tracklist, it is one of the most dynamic songs. However, it is still an emotional track about letting go of someone unwilling to commit.

The song “Backwards” displays Jorja Smith’s growth in its lyrics and instrumentation. She sings about growing out of a relationship and learning from those experiences over UK drill-inspired percussion. On the track, Smith emulates her 2022 collaboration with FKA twigs and Unknown T. No matter how foreign or familiar the musical style may be, she sounds comfortable throughout the album’s varied tracklist. While Lost & Found was a solo journey, Falling or Flying includes features from J Hus and Lila Iké. “Feelings” with Hus reaffirms the chemistry the two displayed earlier this year on “Nice Body.” On “Greatest Gift,” Smith and Iké’s smooth voices complement each other as they both show their gratitude toward a love interest. The album’s two features are welcome bonuses, but Jorja Smith is the star of the show.

Reestablishing Smith’s Signature Sound

Jorja Smith has perfected both her unique sound and the ability to grasp her deepest emotions in her songwriting. Falling or Flying is a natural evolution of her artistic growth as she expands her repertoire and builds on her own sound. On her second album, she sounds more sure of herself than ever before. The opening song, “Try Me,” sees Jorja Smith at her most confident as she daringly faces an opinionated world over a pounding rhythm. It is this confidence that permeates the rest of the album, allowing Smith to challenge herself musically and be vulnerable in her songwriting. While she tries her hand at different musical styles, she reestablishes her signature sound of bluesy and soulful R&B music. Songs like “She Feels” and “Lately” are heartfelt songs with downbeat bass lines that accentuate the vulnerable lyrical content.

Jorja Smith Soars On Her Second Album

Falling or Flying consists of some of the best songwriting of Jorja Smith’s career so far. The title track says it all as she sings about the desire for her love interest to not hold back in their relationship. She artfully contrasts “night and day” and “love and lust” to exemplify their connection. Arguably the best lyric on the entire album, and one that sums it up quite perfectly, is when she sings, “I could be fallin’ or flyin’, I wouldn’t know the difference.

The song “Broken is the Man” is also some of Smith’s best writing to date. In the verses, she sings about finding the man she wants to be with, as well as who she should be with. The chorus continues this concept more specifically. Jorja sings about a man who told her she was broken and a man who put her down, eventually coming to a moment of self-actualization that she was “never broken, ‘cause broken is the man.”

The emotional ballads on Falling or Flying are sprinkled throughout the tracklist, where Jorja Smith tries her hand at new styles and genres. Its best moments are the most unpredictable, as well as the most vulnerable. The slowest songs toward the end of the album do drag the flow of the sequence, but each song is well-composed. Overall, Falling or Flying is some of Jorja Smith’s best work yet. At 16 tracks, she satisfies listeners with a skillful blend of pain, joy, and comfort.

Jorja Smith’s Soaring ‘Falling Or Flying’ Album Finds Value In The Unknown

The RX is Uproxx Music’s stamp of approval for the best albums, songs, and music stories throughout the year. Inclusion in this category is the highest distinction we can bestow, and signals the most important music being released throughout the year. The RX is the music you need, right now.

Falling Or Flying, the title of Jorja Smith’s second album, somewhat recalls a record from her 2021 EP Be Right Back. “Burn” speaks of the gradual but damaging progression of burnout that any of us can experience. Jorja sings with the tenderness of a candle’s flame and with the urgency of one who sees that the candle’s wax is moments away from running out, which would ultimately kill the adored flame. “You let yourself burn, you burn yourself out,” she sings. “There she goes, she is fallin’ down.” Here, the concept of “falling” is attached to exhaustion and deprivation, but Falling Or Flying shines a more optimistic light on it.

Jorja Smith excels on her long-awaited sophomore album by taking the split second between “falling” and “flying,” and making an entire world of it. It’s the extremely brief moment where the unknown is about to become known. There’s a serene beauty behind this ignorance that allows Jorja to take things in strides regardless of if she crashes to the ground or soars through the sky. “Little Things” is a perfect example of this as Jorja dances to joyful keys and a funky bass all while proposing a nighttime getaway to a new love interest. She’s yet to receive a “yes” or “no,” but the wait for it is far from grueling as she will just dance the night away in the meantime.

This concept of “falling or flying” is far more accepting of the world than its combative cousin “fight or flight.” Yet, as an artist who is five years and an EP removed from her debut album Lost & Found, Jorja honed in on this combative spirit as there is plenty to prove on Falling Or Flying. The album begins with “Try Me,” a track steered by daring drums that amplify Jorja’s challenge to critics to be open to her and correctly define her changed self. “She Feels” is on a determined mission to leave places where she’s mistreated and head to where she’s valued. “Go Go Go” sticks to her guns as a woman in favor of one-night intimacy over a longtime relationship. Though outsiders will lay their claim on whether she will fall or fly as a result of this album, Jorja’s fight proves at the very least that she makes it through the battle, scarred or not, if proves to be tougher than expected. At best, the singer has everything needed to win her fight by a great margin.

It’s hard to not complete a listen of Falling Or Flying and not reach the conclusion that Jorja absolutely soared above the noise through its 16 songs. Some of the singer’s best songs live on the album. “Falling Or Flying” starts as a declaration of what love can and can’t be over scantly funky production before exploding into a poppy and dazzling showcase of vulnerability where she confesses that the end result of this love is the least of her worries. The album’s closer, “What If My Heart Beats Faster?” is the brutal realization that her current relationship is not the perfect fit and the attempt to break free from what doesn’t serve her. Lastly, in what is the album’s best song, “Greatest Gift” with Lila Iké offers the genuine appreciation to a lover who couldn’t any more perfect for her along with the commitment to be everything and more for them as they are that for her. From start to finish on Falling Or Flying, Jorja Smith makes love feel like the greatest superpower and something you’re lucky to have work in your favor while it’s also capable of causing irreversible damage if it’s not on your side.

Jorja Smith found her wings on Falling Or Flying, and with them, she flies with captivating grace more times than not through the 16 songs on her second album. In comparison to her debut, Falling Or Flying feels a bit lighter as its overall construction – which wasn’t too bad – was stripped down to make it easier for the singer to stand out in her airborne moments. The best thing about this album is that we see Jorja arrive at the conclusion everything will be okay and she is doing just fine. The appreciation of the spectacle split-second moment that is the unknown between falling or flying is worth whatever ending is destined for her. Whether she falls or flies through love or falls or flies in her career, all that matters to Jorja Smith is the moment she’s off her feet and ensuring that it’s not the last time she experiences it.

Falling Or Flying is out now via FAMM. Find out more information here.

In an interview with Elle, Smith reflected on how things have changed from her Lost & Found days to now. “I was at the end of being a teenager. I was probably more confident then, I didn’t really care as much. Now, I probably care more about things. I feel the pressure more, I think. Before, I didn’t. Not with my music, but just about what people think of me and s**t. I’m trying to be more of that person, so hopefully I’ll get back like that,” she explained.
