Kevin Gates On B.G.: “He Taught Me Damn Near Everything I Know”

kevin gates

Kevin Gates continues to prove why he’s HIM.

Most recently, the Louisana rapper went viral all over the internet and social media about how snug his jeans were, which he wore for his headlining show at The Novo in Los Angeles. If that’s not enough, he went straight to the gym following the concert, working out in those same jeans and even adding a fedora/hat to the equation.

Kevin Gates recently unveiled his new album titled The Ceremony, which we had the pleasure of attending his album listening in Los Angeles. Kevin has been on tour promoting the project, which hails the fan favorite “Yonce Freestyle” featuring B.G. and Sexxy Red.

The Source had the pleasure of chatting with Kevin Gates backstage after the show to discuss what worked for him in his sobriety, his relatoinship with B.G., and how Sexxy Red landed on the song.

I met you at the Escape Room hella years ago.

I remember, but I don’t remember because I was on drugs. I was on drugs then. I was depressed, I wasn’t happy then.

I’m actually an addict. What is the #1 thing that worked for you when it came to getting sober?

I had to be honest with myself, and it’s something that a lot of people don’t like to do. I looked in the mirror and told myself: “Kevin, you a bitch and you pussy.” Because you care about a drug more than you care about your own self, your own health, your own thoughts, your own everything. I was honest with myself, I don’t need nobody to come pat me on my ass and say, “Hey, it’s okay. The first step is admitting.” Man fuck that! I admit it to myself every time, I can’t find it.

I feel you, and I hear you say that rehab for quitters. But I don’t think a lot of people have the mental strength you do.

I just couldn’t do it. Whenever I was withdrawing off opioids and stuff like that, I just started taking — like the old people used to take hot boiling water and put nutmeg in it. When they put nutmeg in it, they put a little bit of honey and it’ll get the withdrawals. It’ll kill all of the itching, or they’ll take water with lemon and detox themselves like that. You’re going throw up, you’re going through all that, but it’s a fight. It’s supposed to be tough for a reason, because if it ain’t rough, it ain’t us.. Adversity is what builds character.

“Yonce Freestyle” is my shit. How did that song with B.G. and Sexyy Red come about and how excited were you when B.G. got released from prison?

Me and B.G hadn’t seen each other in 13 or 14 years before he was incarcerated. Him and Boobie — I don’t know if you know Boobie, but that’s my OG. I come up under him, he taught me damn near everything I know. I hate to say this on camera, but Boobie was my babysitter when I was young. That’s what you call a person that takes care of you when you’re a kid? Yeah, my babysitter. He gon’ get mad if I say that, but he taught me a lot. He raised a lot of people in the neighborhood. Him and B.G. had a great relationship and we all know each other. We all from the same city.

How did Sexyy Red get on the song?

She knows somebody, this is before I met her. Somebody sent her the song saying that she would’ve been hard on it. I heard the verse and was like goddamn!

She killed that shit.

Yeah, she’s a monster.
Is there a video coming? You guys gotta make one.
I think I’ma try. I’ma contact my people and put something together.

Kevin Gates Drops Nearly Featureless Record “The Ceremony”

Kevin Gates is one of the more interesting characters in the rap game. He is unapologetically unfiltered in interviews and it usually leads to hilarious moments. Some are more questionable than others, though. However, he is also someone who cares a lot about being a role model for the younger generation. While “Thinking with My D***” might not be a glowing representation of him, Gates is a huminatarian at heart.

Which was why at the end of last year he received a prestigious award from the New Orleans mayor for his efforts. He addresses some of those topics on tracks like “Protect Children” off his brand-new album The Ceremony. However, the main themes are about the celebration of his career, hence the title. Interestingly this is only Gates’ fourth studio album out of the many projects he has dropped in his career.

Kevin Gates’ Capris Keep The Internet Laughing: Watch

Kevin Gates is kicking off 2024 with all eyes on him. The controversial lyricist has been busy preparing for his upcoming album, The Ceremony to drop later this month. As with most artists, he’s been doing his due diligence in speaking with the press, even dropping by The Breakfast Club to update fans. At that time, the “2 Phones” hitmaker spoke candidly about his role in the lives of others as a healer. Though Charlamagne Tha God expressed his doubts about Gates’ ability to impact everyone he crosses paths with, his guest made it clear that he knows his energy isn’t for everyone.

What the multi-talent never fails to do, whether you’re a fan of his music or not, is keep us laughing. On TBC he did this by revealing the “d**k restriction” he’s put women on in the past for reverting to their toxic ways. Now, however, it’s Gates’ fashion choices that have some social media users cracking up. After he stepped out in an all-black ensemble consisting of capris, a tucked-in shirt, and layered socks, it’s obvious Kevin was feeling himself. Still, not everyone agreed with his creative decisions, and many weren’t afraid to tell him so.

Kevin Gates is Feeling Himself Ahead of The Ceremony

“That ninja got on knickerbockers!” someone pointed out online. “Let’s talk about how that’s not Dreka,” another noted, speaking on Gates’ long-time wife and manager. At this time, there’s some speculation that they’re in an open relationship, but nothing has been confirmed.

Haters Clown His All-Black Ensemble

“Why [Kevin] Gates dressed like Spanky from The Little Rascals?” one user quipped under @theneighborhoodtalk’s repost of his video. “This how the studs come after they [lose] a lil weight and get a new sports bra 😂😂😂,” another top-liked comment reads. Kevin Gates’ “The Breakfast Club” Interview Gives “D**k Restriction” Advice & More

Part of Kevin Gates’ appeal is his carefree approach to life, which includes writing X-rated raps, not explaining his decisions to others, and moving in alignment with what his spiritual guides tell him. Ahead of his upcoming album, The Ceremony, the father of two has been outside promoting his work. He shared his “Birds Calling” single earlier in January, and now, he’s sitting down with The Breakfast Club hosts to reveal what listeners can expect from his next LP.

Besides his music, Gates is also widely known for his wild sexual exploits, which he freely spits bars about. Though it previously looked like he and his wife Dreka had gone their separate ways, she was out in full support of her man at his recent listening party, raising questions about the status of their relationship. On TBC, the “2 Phones” hitmaker spoke of sometimes having to put partners on “d**k restriction,” suggesting that his marriage is more open than some thought.

Kevin Gates Likes to Keep it Honest

When talking about his journey as a healer, Gates shared that he’s happy to help others when he can. However, not everyone deserves that kind of energy from him – particularly the ones who will revert back to their old ways before long. “I got to put them on d**k restriction,” he said, earning a laugh from the hosts. “I start with 90 days,” the Bread Winner added after Charlamagne Tha God pressed for more details.

Kevin Gates Gives Emotional Speech About Overcoming Trauma At Album Release Party In LA

Kevin Gates is gearing up to release his highly-anticipated forthcoming album titled The Ceremony, and he’s celebrating in a major way.

On Friday, Jan. 19th, the Louisiana native hosted an exclusive, invite-only album release party in downtown Los Angeles, taking over Savanna rooftop for an evening for the books. The event was an all-black affair, with Gates stealing the show in an all-white tuxedo.

When it came time for Gates to take the stage, he opened up to the crowd about how far he’s come, and how his past does not define him.

“It was the reuniting of myself,” Kevin Gates states. “I finally learned to love the stranger that was once myself. Anybody in here that’s dealing with anything that they’ve been through, past traumatically or any type of traumas, I want you to know one thing: we are not our pasts. We’re nothing that we ever did in the past. We are only the face of the circumstances and the decisions that we made. We have today and forever to always make the right decisions and correct everything, and love everything.”

He adds, “What makes Ceremony so important is I learned to love the stranger that was once myself. Nothing external ever adds value. From the inside is what comes.”

Anyone who knows Kevin Gates personally knows he’s a man of God and walks in his faith. His ability to inspire and motivate fans to become the best version of themselves goes further than any hit record, plaque, or accolade.

The evening was nothing short of a celebration, and we’re excited to hear the new album!

Kevin Gates, Sexyy Red, And B.G. Come Together For “Yonce Freestyle”

Kevin Gates is riding high as of late and he is getting ready to continue that. Not too long ago, the Lousiana rapper announced that a new project was in the works. We got the first taste of the album with the lead single, “God Slippers.” While Gates did not announce the release date for the tape, we now have that information at our disposal. However, this could be tentative, as a great deal of artists like to relentlessly push back the date.

According to Genius, we can expect The Ceremony on December 1. In addition to that tidbit, it seems we have a tracklist as well. 17 songs are listed with just two features. Perhaps, that could change too, but for now, that is what we know. Ironically, Kevin has just dropped the song with those guests today. He has grabbed Sexyy Red and B.G. for the second single, “Yonce Freestyle.” This track comes in the wake of Gates teasing it on TikTok a couple of days ago. Fans were chomping at the bit for this to come to fruition and now its here.

Listen To “Yonce Freestyle” By Kevin Gates, Sexyy Red, And B.G.

As you might expect, the song is aggressive and a little wild as well. Interestingly, the recently freed B.G. appears here as we mentioned. However, his verse fits in with the other performances from Red and Gates. Give the track a spin above.

What are your initial thoughts on this brand-new single from Kevin Gates, Sexyy Red, and B.G., “Yonce Freestyle?” Will this be the best single from The Ceremony? Kevin Gates Awarded For Commitment To Addressing Societal Issues From New Orleans’ First Female Mayor: Watch

Kevin Gates is getting ready for a possible return right before the end of 2023 with a brand-new album. Soon after teasing its release, he put out a YouTube video for the possible lead single, “God Slippers.” It is rumored to appear on the project which will be named Ceremony. While that is all fine and dandy, Gates might have just received something that will top any accomplishment this year and maybe over the next few. Over the weekend the Louisiana native was performing at the Uno Lakefront Arena, which is located near his hometown. In fact that arena is on the campus of the University of New Orleans.

During his performance, the New Orleans Mayor, LaToya Cantrell, presented him with a prestigious honor. In the city’s over 200 years of history, they have never had a woman in this position. She earned this title on May 7, 2018, making this moment for Gates all the more special. While there is no official name for this award, the meaning behind it is what makes it all worth it.

YK Osiris Calls Out Kevin Gates In Barber Beef Instagram Rant

Earlier this week one of the strangest rap beefs in recent years emerged. It started when a barber who cut YK Osiris’ hair claimed that he never paid her for the cut. “Y’all know I cut my first celebrity client, YK Osiris, last week. I charged him $150 for the cut, the cut went up, he paid me $200. He tipped me $50. No complaints but he had hit me up to come line him up last Tuesday. I charge him $100 for the lineup. This n***a hit me with the, ‘Alright, I’ma Cash App you.’ Instantly I was like… I’m like ‘I don’t think he gonna do me like that.’ It’s just $100 dollars, it’s not $100,000.” they said in an Instagram video explaining the incident.

YK Osiris responded to the situation and refuted her allegations. “She got paid. She just want clout. Give her a lil clout lol,” he claimed. While he did eventually pay the barber, before that Kevin Gates stepped up. Gates allegedly reached out to them through DMs and sent $200 through Zelle as some sort of makeup payment. That clearly rubbed YK the wrong way and he took to his Instagram story to express his disappointment. “I hate n*ggas, literally I don’t fw any of you lame ass, corny ass, n*ggas. Get that through y’all mind man. PLEASE DO. Shake my hand in public but play me on social media people wake up please I pray y’all do.” Check out the entire rant below.

YK Osiris’ Now Deleted Story Posts

This isn’t even the only time recently that YK Osiris has been accused of not paying people. Last month, a jeweler claimed that he agreed to purchase a $20k Audemars Piguet watch. But in the years since he’s reportedly dodged any request for him to pay up.

Earlier this year YK Osiris released his new single “Dear Fans.” The track addressed his die-hard listeners directly after a widely criticized public interaction with Sukihana earlier this year. What do you think of YK Osiris’ Twitter rant taking aim at Kevin Gates? Let us know in the comment section below.

Kevin Gates Spotted Attending Drake’s LA Concert

Kevin Gates is known for his brash lyrics and wild antics, but his camaraderie with his peers is often overlooked. Gates was recently spotted attending Drake’s LA tour stop. In a clip that recently surfaced online, the “2 Phones” rapper appears to be enjoying himself during Drake’s set. Following a quick intermission, Drake noticed Gates in the crowd and embraced him. The pair quickly dapped it up before the “Nonstop” rapper resumed his performance.

The last time the two names were mentioned together was during YNW Melly’s murder trial. An undercover cop ended up mentioning the rappers during his testimony regarding the violent content in their lyrics. Juelz Santana, Young Thug, and French Montana were also among those referenced.

Drake’s latest trek started last month, and it has already broken records. Drake earned $5 million each night at Capital One Arena, making him the first rapper to earn that amount in a single performance. Spanning 54 dates across the US and Canada, the tour will run until October. There will be stops in notable cities like Inglewood, Toronto, and more. The tour has featured various special guests so far, including Lil Yachty and, most recently, Meek Mill

In other news, Kevin Gates recently came back to Instagram to send a message to his followers. In a clip posted to his official page, the rapper seems to be relaxing in the ocean as he speaks directly to the camera. He had quite a bit to say. “Let the record reflect,” he began. “[If] [you] ever did me dirty when I wasn’t nothing but genuine with you people… Hey, I forgive you. I didn’t understand it when I was going through it, but I thank you.” He continued: “‘Cause y’all… provoked me to be something that I never, ever thought I could be… I’m gonna step away for a while, and I’m gonna have my executive assistant take care of my affairs.” He added, “Hey, but do me two favors…Find me two n*ggas. Find me that n*gga that could say I told on him, and find me that n*gga that could say he stuck his d*ck in me.”
