Smino & Cousin Stizz Answer The Call On “Nokia” Single

Smino may not be the biggest star in the rap game, but man is he not one of the most consistent going right now? The St. Louis, Missouri do-it-all artist never seems to truly disappoint whether it be in terms of singles or projects. We can certainly say that as of now as well, because everything he has put out in 2024 has been nothing short of sensational. In Febraury, Smino would come back strong with “mister misfit but ain’t missed a fit in months”. This track was released to essentially remind people that he’s got it like that. Then, just a few months later, he would give us “Polynesian”. A fun summer banger with loads of character and blissful production. Now, Smino is back just before the end of July with “Nokia”.

This single sees the “Wild Irish Roses” MC tack on a Cousin Stizz feature, making it his first collaboration of the year. On “Nokia”, these two give you some bars about linking up with a female. While we would say this isn’t Smino’s best work out of the three, it is certainly another respectable outing. One of most fun moments on the record is the inclusion of the original Nokia ringtone from back in the day at the beginning. Additionally, the chorus is clever and delivered in such a goofy and creative fashion. “I sent you this s*** from a Noki-a / This b**** eat me up like some gnocchi, uh / Yeah, I whip the Tesla, it ain’t got no key, bruh / I was f***in’ shawty on the lowski, hush“. At this point we just want the new Smino album.

Smino Delivers Clever Bars Galore On Summer-Ready Jam “Polynesian”

Smino has one of the most unheralded pens in all of hip-hop right now. Whether you want comedy, braggadocious, or reflective bars, the St. Louis, Missouri native has got you covered. On top of that, he has a great ear for beats, as he is always finding something unique, but not too inaccessible. Perfect example, “Polynesian,” the latest single from Smino. This is the second release from the multi-talent this year and it comes after a three-and-a-half-month hiatus.

“Polynesian” follows up on “mister misfit but aint missed a fit in months”, a blistering banger with a nasty, soulful trap beat with an unrelenting number of flow switch ups. This latest track is a little more carefree, especially when it comes to the instrumental. It features some beautiful piano leads, shimmering synths, and an overall airy feel. Across its 3:00 runtime, Smino raps with so much personality per usual with so many one-liners that make you want to read the lyrics and break them down. A lot of fans were excited for this one, including some star musicians like Metro Boomin. The St. Louis showed loved to his hometown neighbor by responding to the rapper’s request to comment “🍿’s if you ready”. Hopefully, we get a collaboration from them soon.

Sango Expands His Sound On New Album “North Vol. 2”

Sango has different sides to his artistry. There’s the Da Rocinha series, which is largely tropical (and instrumental), there’s the tapes where he produces for another artist, and then there’s the North series, where he combines both into a singular statement. North Vol. 1 blended Sango’s instrumental prowess with a talented roster of rappers and singers. North Vol. 2 follows suit, while adding some sonic twists. These twists keep the album sounding fresh, albeit wholly familiar.

Sango’s usual roster of collaborators is here, and they deliver. Xavier Omar sounds great over the bouncy and surprisingly gritty instrumental for “The Lake.” The same goes for Smino, who manages to stay atop the busy samba shuffle of “Ice Storm.” The chemistry is predictably excellent on these songs, but it’s the new collabs that make North Vol. 2 stand out, for better or worse.

A Sango and Channel Tres collab could have gone lots of different ways, but the mood they settle on; jazzy and wistful, with Channel Tres’ usual spoken word, makes “Spaceship” one of the best songs on the album. Also worth checking out is Sango and GoldLink’s “Peace,” which strikes a perfect balance between the former’s solo work and GoldLink’s weirder impulses. The song would slot in perfectly on Link’s 2019 album, Diaspora.

Sango Experiments To Varying Degrees Of Success

Unfortunately, not every collaboration goes over perfectly. “Masego’s Interlude” never really gets off the ground, despite the nice harmony vocals from the titular singer. “Lost Intro (Sango’s Version)” is another missed opportunity. Sango tries to hard to fit Bryson Tiller’s signature sound, and the result is a generic Tiller song rather than something new. North Vol. 2 isn’t perfect, but there are more than enough high points to warrant a listen.

What are your thoughts on this brand-new album North Vol. 2 by Sango? Is it an improvement over the first installment? What is the best song? Is there a feature artist who steals the show? We would like to hear what you have to say, so be sure to leave your takes in the comments section. Additionally, always keep it locked in with HNHH for all of the latest news surrounding Sango. Smino Surprises Fans With A Cover Of The Outkast Classic “Roses”

Smino has developed a reputation for being one of the eccentric voices in hip-hop. He has a rare talent for combining hip-hop, R&B and pop music without making it seem contrived or emulatory. He makes Smino music, plain and simple. The rapper’s idiosyncrasy doesn’t keep him dabbling in other people’s hits, however. During a recent appearance on Like a Version, Smino delighted fans by performing a live cover of the classic 2003 Outkast track “Roses.”

Smino delved into his decision to cover Outkast during a separate Like a Version video. He admitted that “Roses” was a song he wish he’d written, and praised its unconventional structure. “Sometimes you hear a song as an artist, you’ll be like, damn,” he said. “Just the creativity, and the way André [3000] chose to explain a superficial girl… It’s a good message.” The rapper intended to be faithful to the original Outkast version, but he also felt it was important to put his own humor and personal spin on “Roses.” Anyone who has listened to Smino’s music will not be surprised by this point. “If you really know me you know I love laughing,” he noted. “The end part where I was just like ‘crazy b***h,’ I was just thinking about some people I know.”

Smino Considers André 3000 One Of His Heroes

Smino has been vocal about the influence Outkast, and André 3000, in particular, have had on his music. The rapper told Rolling Stone that he often gets likened to Three Stacks when people try to describe his elastic flow. He doesn’t find the comparison completely accurate, but he’s humbled by it regardless. “It’s known that I love André 3000, like I love Stacks,” he noted. “Bruh, I love Stacks… I feel like, ‘Wow.’ The guy’s a legend, go ahead.” Smino plans to chart his own, path, however. “I feel like my gratitude for where I’m at will get me where I want to go,” he asserted.

André 3000 and Big Boi continue to be forces in the music industry, and Smino told Like a Version that he hopes they like his “Roses” cover. “Man, I just hope they’ll be proud that their music’s still affecting us,” he said. “That’s the most, you know.” We get the feeling the duo, and everyone else who watches the cover, will dig it.

Noname’s Tiny Desk Concert Was As Just Radical As It Was Groovy, Featuring Guest Appearances From Smino & Saba

Today (November 10) was all about the 2024 Grammy Award nominations. However, nothing could stop Noname’s triumphant return to NPR’s Tiny Desk concert series. It’s been five years since her striking first appearance. With the Sundial Tour coming to a close soon, her cameo served as a treat to longtime supporters who couldn’t snag tickets to show near their city. Noname’s latest Tiny Desk concert performance was just as radical as it was groovy, featuring guest appearances by Smino and Saba for a brief Ghetto Sage reunion.

With musicians Greg Paul (drummer), Brooke Skye (bassist), Cisco Swank (keyboardist and supporting vocalist), and David Otis (saxophonist), Noname tackled her poignant album’s standout tracks, including “Namesake” and “Hold Me Down.” Background vocalists Kamilah and Claudia Abena provided the much-needed layering to help amplify its track’s messaging.

Ayoni also made a surprise appearance during Noname’s set so that they could perform their track “Boom Boom.” Ghetto Sage reunion revealed an unreleased track titled “Kush And Love Songs.” Before she closed with “Balloons,” in which Jay Electronic is featured, Noname took a trip down memory lane. Noname couldn’t leave out her older records. Room 25′s “Don’t Forget About Me” made the final setlist as the sole older track.

Sundial is out now via Noname. Find more information here.

‘Rap Sh!t’: Here’s The Music You Heard In Season 2, Episode 2

'Rap Shit' 202 Aida Osman as Shawna
MAX

(WARNING: Spoilers for this week’s Rap Sh!t episode will be found below.)

The events in the second episode of Max’s Rap Sh!t season two, titled “Heavy Traffic,” are soundtracked by songs that help to accentuate the emotions behind each scene. You can find a list of them below and details about the scenes the records were heard in.

Hood Brat, A.Chic, TT The Artist, Raedio — “Call Me Daddy”

We hear this record during the opening scene of “Heavy Traffic” as Shawna, Mia, Reina Reign, Duke, and Francois film a TikTok on their tour bus. The group shows off the bus and their new tour lifestyle to their followers with the video.

Smino — “Settle Down” Feat. Cory Henry & Ravyn Lenae

Smino’s Luv 4 Rent record plays around the 3:03 mark as Shawna & Mia get ready for their first performance. The duo is dressed in aprons as they believe that they’ll be matching Reina Reign, but Duke informs them that Reina will not be on theme with them which frustrates both Shawna and Mia.

Nardo Wick — “G Nikes” Feat. Polo G

Nardo Wick’s track with Polo G is heard around the 4:42 mark as we check in with Lamont and his daughter Melissa. Due to an early release from her school, and the unavailability of Lamont’s grandmother and Mia’s mom, Lamont is forced to bring Melissa to the studio with him as he works with an artist.

Reina Reign — “Tongue (Remix)” Feat. Shawna & Mia

Around the 6:38 mark, this track plays as Shawna & Mia take the stage with Reina Reign to perform their remix of “Tongue.” Though the performance went well, it’s clear that Shawna & Mia aren’t on the same page during this performance. Shawna, frustrated by how she and Mia looked on stage, confronts Mia about their performance, but it doesn’t go too well.

Raedio & Lord AK — “Suicide Mission”

We hear this song around the 13:08 mark as Lord AK goes on stage to begin his performance. Shawna, impressed, is in the crowd watching the performance before she’s pulled away by Duke and Mia to go to Lord AK’s green room.

Future — “Like Me” Feat. 42 Dugg & Lil Baby

Future’s I Never Liked You song plays around the 17:13 mark as Duke finally gets into Lord AK’s green room where the party is live and active. Duke meets one of Lord AK’s closest associates, Gat, and offers him some party favors to enhance his party experience.

Ron Suno — “Door”

This track plays around the 18:42 mark as Duke finds Shawna & Mia in the party. She’s clearly under the influence after taking a bit of cocaine with Gat. Duke launches into an energetic rant about making money and finding opportunities that leaves Shawna and Mia very confused.

Dear Silas — “Smoke” Feat. Sauce Father

Around the 19:45 mark, the track can be heard as Mia joins the fun of the party to play a game of flip cup with a gentleman we later find out to be Courtney Lou, the artist that Lamont told Mia to look out for. Meanwhile, Shawna stumbles into a few awkward moments at the party including one where she’s told that she gives “Rapsody vibes… if she was a hoe.”

Peachcurls — “Ass Shaker”

Peachcurls’ track can be heard around the 22:19 mark as the party in Lord AK’s room is still going strong. Shawna tries to talk to Gat but he pays her no mind. He instead kicks off a game where the winner will get to go on Lord AK’s tour bus. This game does nothing but show Gat’s colorism, and when Shawna calls him out for it and flexes her rap knowledge, he rudely sprays her with champagne.

Baby Rose — “Fight Club” Feat. Georgia Anne Muldrow

Baby Rose’s Through And Through highlight plays around the 28:27 mark to close the episode as Shawna cleans herself after she is showered with champagne by Gat. She’s also frustrated by the disconnect between her and Mia, something that only gets worse when Mia lets the crew know that she’ll fly into the next city because she got an offer to spend some time with Cash.

New episodes of ‘Rap Sh!t’ are available on Max on Thursday at 3am EST/ 12 pm PST.
