Cardi B and Megan Thee Stallion’s “Bongos”: A Party Anthem That Deserves Better

Cardi B and Megan Thee Stallion Announce New Single "Bongos"

Cardi B and Megan Thee Stallion’s ‘Bongos’ Challenge Rap’s Status Quo

Cardi B and Megan Thee Stallion, two of the most prominent figures in contemporary rap, set the music world on fire with their explosive collaboration, “Bongos.” With over 100 million streams on Spotify alone, the twerk-worthy track is already a certified hit. “Bongos” has been praised for its catchy dembow-esque production and Cardi and Megan’s fierce and crisp delivery. However, the song has also been criticized for its sexually explicit lyrics and unapologetic celebration of female sexuality.

The track’s provocative lyrics and explicit content ignited a wave of controversy and raised questions about the double standards women in hip hop face compared to their male counterparts. In the song, Cardi and Megan rap about their sexuality and ability to please men. They also use some profanity, but no more than you would hear in a typical rap song. Yet, some people have criticized the song for being “too raunchy” and “degrading to women.”

In hip-hop, it is not uncommon for male rappers to use misogynistic language and imagery. This is often seen as a way of asserting dominance and masculinity. However, when women rappers use similar language, they are often accused of being “too sexual” or “unladylike.” This double standard is a form of gender bias often overlooked in hip-hop culture, where women are often seen as objects to be used and discarded.

For example, let’s consider two instances from Snoop Dogg and Rick Ross songs that highlight the double standards in rap lyrics:

Snoop Dogg’s “Ain’t No Fun (If the Homies Can’t Have None)” features lyrics such as “Btches ain’t sht but hoes and tricks.” These lyrics objectify women and degrade them to a demeaning status. Despite the explicit and derogatory content, the song is often praised for contributing to West Coast hip-hop and is considered iconic. In his song “U.O.E.N.O.,” Rick Ross raps about drugging a woman without her knowledge with the line, “Put molly all in her champagne, she ain’t even know it.” These lyrics sparked outrage and calls for accountability, yet Ross faced minimal repercussions, and the song continued to receive airplay.

The music industry has long been a battlefield for debates about freedom of expression, artistic integrity, and gender equality. This disparity in judgment limits creative freedom and hinders progress toward gender equality in the music industry. Recognizing and addressing these disparities is essential to promote a more equitable and respectful music culture.

Beyond the lyrical controversy, “Bongos” demonstrates innovation in its musical production. The song features a captivating blend of styles and influences, with production credits going to DJ SwanQo, Breyan Isaac, and We Good’s Donny ‘Dizzy’ Flores. One of the most intriguing aspects of the song is its infusion of Dembow rhythms, a fast-paced, rhythmic music genre from the Dominican Republic. This infusion adds a unique and infectious element to the track, setting it apart from conventional hip-hop and rap songs.

The incorporation of Dembow rhythms into mainstream music is a testament to the ever-evolving nature of music and the willingness of artists to explore new sounds and styles. This cultural exchange enriches the musical landscape and should be celebrated for its ability to bridge different cultures and bring fresh energy to the industry.

In light of the controversy surrounding “Bongos” and its musical innovation, it is only natural to anticipate a remix that can help expand the song’s reach and impact. While recognizing the importance of artistic expression, we encourage Cardi B and Megan Thee Stallion to consider a remix that takes the song to new heights. Collaborating with global artists like El Alfa, J Balvin, Karol G, or Rosalía would bring a dembow remix of “Bongos” and help further popularize the genre. These are all talented artists who would bring their own unique flavor to the song. Such a remix could incorporate powerful voices from the rap and dancehall scenes, showcasing unity and diversity in music.

A carefully crafted remix could further elevate the cultural fusion of Dembow rhythms and hip-hop, attracting a broader audience while addressing some of the lyrical concerns raised by critics. Cardi B and Megan Thee Stallion’s “Bongos” single has thrust essential issues surrounding gender double standards in rap lyrics into the spotlight. We must hold all artists accountable for their content while recognizing the artistic freedom they should possess. Additionally, we should celebrate the innovative infusion of Dembow rhythms into mainstream music, as it represents a positive step towards cultural diversity in the industry.

“Bongos” is not just a song; it is a catalyst for essential discussions about the state of the music industry.

Women’s Expo Alleges Wendy Williams’ Team Kept Money After Cancelling Scheduled Appearance

Wendy

Back in May, fans were concerned when former daytime talk show host Wendy Williams was a no-show at the Women’s Expo in Atlanta. The beloved gossip queen was scheduled to host the event but shocked fans when she canceled at the last minute.
Now reports are claiming Wendy’s team never reimbursed promoters the money for the canceled appearance.

The Sun reports:

WENDY Williams’ management never returned the full $25,000 payment for the Women’s Expo appearance after her team canceled the gig, The U.S. Sun has exclusively learned.

The U.S. Sun exclusively obtained copies of wire transfers, as well as email correspondences between Wendy’s team including her manager Will Selby, publicist Shawn Zanotti, and entertainment attorney Deborah Hrbek in the aftermath of the event.

Wendy, 59, canceled her appearance as the headline speaker just days before she was set to appear at the May 20 event due to health concerns.

Wire transfers revealed that the full initial payment for the event was sent to Wendy’s publicist’s company, Exact Publicity, but after the star backed out at the last minute, the Expo was left to scramble for a replacement speaker, whom they had to also pay.

In three separate wire transfers back to the Expo, Wendy’s publicist’s company sent back $12,500 on May 17 immediately after her client officially backed out of the gig, and then another $1,250 on June 9.

Wendy’s manager Will only sent back $1,250 on June 12.

After those transfers, no other money was sent back to the company and to this day, the Expo remains out at least $15,000, according to sources familiar with the transactions.

Additionally, in emails reviewed by The U.S. Sun, the Expo attempted to have the rest of the money sent back from Wendy’s team, however, the star’s new entertainment lawyer Deborah suggested that it was Shawn’s PR company that had signed onto the event and not Wendy herself.

Despite Wendy filming promotional videos for the event, and her manager Will sending the Expo back money from the company he created- The Wendy Experience Inc – her attorney suggested that her publicist Shawn wasn’t authorized to book the star for this engagement.

In one email reviewed by The U.S. Sun sent on June 23, Wendy’s attorney wrote: “I am doing my best to help here despite the fact that Shawn had no authority to enter this agreement on behalf of Wendy or any entity owned by her.”

Angie Martinez, DJ Clark Kent + More Join Forces With Listerine X Compound To Present ‘The Whoa Collection’

Whoa kit 1

Angie Martinez will be joining forces with the world-renowned oral care brand Listerine and their creative partner, Compound, to launch a groundbreaking initiative known as The Whoa Collection. This unique endeavor aims to bridge the diversity gap in the field of dentistry.

While more than 12% of the United States’ population identifies as Black, shockingly, less than four percent of dentists belong to this community. This underrepresentation is not only a disheartening reflection of the larger disparities in the healthcare industry but also has real consequences when it comes to oral health care access.

No items were found matching your selection.

Reports indicate that a staggering 40% of Black adults in the U.S. are living with untreated dental cavities. These disparities in oral health care access have far-reaching effects, impacting the overall health and well-being of individuals and communities.

The Whoa Collection aspires to address these inequities head-on. By increasing the number of practicing Black dentists, LISTERINE aims to positively impact the understanding, behaviors, and access surrounding oral healthcare. The initiative recognizes that increasing diversity in the dental profession is a critical step toward achieving oral health equity.

As part of this inspiring effort, LISTERINE has partnered with acclaimed artist Saladeen to infuse creativity and passion into the cause. Saladeen’s artistic vision is brought to life through limited-edition bottle art, exclusive merchandise, and a captivating painted canvas.

“A compound is something that organically brings things together, and The Whoa Collection is an embodiment of that. It’s an honor to join Listerine and blend music, art, and oral health care in a way that helps the community while delivering that whoa feeling!” – Set Free Richardson, founder of partner agency Compound

The limited-edition bottles, adorned with Saladeen’s distinctive artwork, are now available for purchase at Target, with Walmart joining the initiative in October. Additionally, the original canvas, a testament to the power of art in advocacy, will be auctioned off during a charity event taking place on September 14th in Brooklyn.

To engage the public and create awareness around this important mission, LISTERINE will offer limited-edition kits. These kits will include the artistic bottle, a custom-designed robe and slippers, and background information on the cause. Details on how to participate in this exciting giveaway will be announced soon.

In addition, music sensation Thundercat has contributed a bold and innovative track that captures the essence of LISTERINE’s “whoa” feeling. This extraordinary musical piece incorporates the sounds of swishing, cap twists, pours, and more, creating a unique auditory experience.

The track will be available on various digital channels, including artist social media profiles, SoundCloud, and Listerine.com, allowing supporters to immerse themselves in this creative expression of oral health advocacy.

Up to $150,000 in proceeds generated through The Whoa Collection will directly benefit Increasing Diversity in Dentistry (IDID), a dynamic nonprofit organization dedicated to the development, mentorship, and retention of Black dental professionals.

The upcoming panel discussion surrounding the issues seen in the lack of diversity in dentistry will feature:

Ne-Yo’s Ex Arrested For Helping Son Fight Another Child

neyo

This week Grammy Award winning singer/ songwriter Ne-Yo and the mother of his two youngest sons, Instagram model Big Sade, were ordered into mediation over their child support battle. Now it has been revealed that Sade was arrested in March for cruelty to children for helping her fight a classmate at the bus stop. Witnesses and cameras allegedly saw Sade “kick and place the child in a chokehold before spraying him in the face with pepper spray.

Radar Online reports:

Ne-Yo’s ex-girlfriend Sade Bagnerise was taken into custody on charges of cruelty to children after she allegedly helped her son fight another child at the bus stop, RadarOnline.com has learned.

RadarOnline.com has obtained a petition for a temporary protective order filed by a woman named Veronica Madison against Sade.

In the petition, Veronica claimed Sade and Sade’s son, whom she does not share with Ne-Yo, “premeditated the act” of driving from their home to her neighborhood. She alleged they went to the bus stop, hid behind the bushes, and then attacked her son after he exited the school bus.

Veronica said eyewitnesses and camera footage captured Sade allegedly punching Veronica’s son as Sade’s child also fought him.

In the petition, she said witnesses saw Sade “kick and place my son in a chokehold prior to spraying him in the face with pepper spray. Eyewitnesses notified law enforcement at which point [Sade] and her son fled the scene.”

Veronica claimed that witnesses stayed on the scene and “gave account of what they saw to police.”

She said paramedics were called to treat her son for pepper spray in his “eyes, hair and on his body.’

Since the alleged incident, Veronica said Sade’s son has continued to make verbal threats via social media. She claims Sade’s child has sent messages and attempted video calls — and even allegedly threatened to “kill my son on video.”

“He’s also made threats to breach my home and inflict harm on my son, myself, my mother, repeatedly, with gunfire,” she alleged.

Veronica added, “This is the 3rd altercation with my son” and Sade’s child. “All three times [Sade’s son] has summoned my son to fight. The last two times he’s attacked him without warning. Once at school and once at the bus stop.”

The mother said her son does not have any interest in fighting with Sade’s son.

In her petition, filed in March 2023, Veronica stated, “[Sade] has been arrested and is currently being held at Fulton County Jail. Charges have also been pressed against the child. Bond conditions state no contact with my family. This [restraining order petition] is being filed to further enforce the ruling.”

Jail records obtained by RadarOnline.com show Sade was arrested on March 27 on charges of cruelty to children – 1st degree, cruelty to children – 3rd degree, and battery.

Sade was released on March 29 after posting a bond of $31k.

CoCo Gauff Becomes The Youngest US Open Champion Since Serena Williams

Screen Shot 2023 09 11 at 7.27.23 AM

Coco Gauff has been dubbed as the future of women’s tennis since she was 15 years old. She arrived at the US Open on Saturday, and took her first Grand Slam championship. Gauff becomes the youngest US Open Grand Slam winner since Serena Williams took the title in 1999.

The 19-year-old American outlasted No. 2 seed Aryna Sabalenka, the new top-ranked player in the WTA, in a 2-6, 6-3, 6-2 thriller in the US Open final at Arthur Ashe Stadium. She becomes the 11th teenager to ever win a Grand Slam singles title, and the question now becomes how many more are in front of her.

“Today was the first time I’ve ever seen my dad cry,” Gauff said to ESPN after the match. “He doesn’t want me to tell y’all that, but he got caught in 4K. He thinks he’s so hard, but you know he’s not … My dad took me to this tournament [years ago], sitting right there watching Venus and Serena [Williams] compete, so it’s really incredible to be on this stage.”

Saturday was Gauff’s third win of the tournament after losing the first set. Per ESPN Stats & Info, the only other person to win the US Open in that fashion was Gauff’s idol, Serena Williams, who did it at 17 years old in 1999.

Coco Gauff overcame a head start from Aryna Sabalenka. It took an epic comeback against Madison Keys for Sabalenka to reach the final as well, but there was no slow start by the Belarusian this time. Sabalenka opened the match by breaking Gauff in front of a highly partial New York crowd looking for the first American US Open champion since Sloane Stephens in 2017.

Gauff broke Sabalenka back three games later, but that was the last game she’d win in the first set. Sabalenka, one of the hardest hitters on tour, showed a form so overpowering that even Gauff’s speed couldn’t neutralize her.

By the end of the match, Gauff was showing her speed.
After four years of waiting, Gauff won her first WTA 1000 event at the Cincinnati Open last month and didn’t stop there.

“Honestly, thank you to the people who didn’t believe in me,” Gauff said. “A month ago, I won a 500 and people said I would stop at that. Two weeks ago, I won a 1000 title and people said that was the biggest it was going to get. Three weeks later, I’m here with this trophy right now.”
