‘Predatory Use Of AI’ In Music Is The Target Of A New Open Letter Signed By Billie Eilish, Noah Kahan, Metro Boomin, And More

AI has become a hot-button topic in creative communities and beyond since consumer-level tools have become widespread over the past few years. Some feel it could threaten the livelihoods of artists, and now some recognizable names have signed an open letter from Artist Rights Alliance that aims to curb or prevent irresponsible use of these technologies.

Those who signed include Billie Eilish, Nicki Minaj, Noah Kahan, Metro Boomin, Katy Perry, J Balvin, Zayn Malik, Camila Cabello, Jonas Brothers, d4vd, Doechii, and Kacey Musgraves, among others.

The letter begins, “We, the undersigned members of the artist and songwriting communities, call on Al developers, technology companies, platforms and digital music services to cease the use of artificial intelligence (Al) to infringe upon and devalue the rights of human artists.” It then considers both sides of the AI situation, saying, “Make no mistake: we believe that, when used responsibly, Al has enormous potential to advance human creativity and in a manner that enables the development and growth of new and exciting experiences for music fans everywhere. Unfortunately, some platforms and developers are employing Al to sabotage creativity and undermine artists, songwriters, musicians, and rightsholders.”

It goes on from there before concluding, “We call on all Al developers, technology companies, platforms and digital music services to pledge that they will not develop or deploy Al music-generation technology, content or tools that undermine or replace the human artistry of songwriters and artists or deny us fair compensation for our work.”

Find the full letter and list of people who signed it below.

“We, the undersigned members of the artist and songwriting communities, call on Al developers, technology companies, platforms and digital music services to cease the use of artificial intelligence (Al) to infringe upon and devalue the rights of human artists.

Make no mistake: we believe that, when used responsibly, Al has enormous potential to advance human creativity and in a manner that enables the development and growth of new and exciting experiences for music fans everywhere.

Unfortunately, some platforms and developers are employing Al to sabotage creativity and undermine artists, songwriters, musicians, and rightsholders.

When used irresponsibly, Al poses enormous threats to our ability to protect our privacy, our identities, our music and our livelihoods. Some of the biggest and most powerful companies are, without permission, using our work to train Al models. These efforts are directly aimed at replacing the work of human artists with massive quantities of Al-created ‘sounds’ and ‘images’ that substantially dilute the royalty pools that are paid out to artists. For many working musicians, artists, and songwriters who are just trying to make ends meet, this would be catastrophic.

Unchecked, Al will set in motion a race to the bottom that will degrade the value of our work and prevent us from being fairly compensated for it.

This assault on human creativity must be stopped. We must protect against the predatory use of Al to steal professional artists’ voices and likenesses, violate creators’ rights, and destroy the music ecosystem.

We call on all Al developers, technology companies, platforms and digital music services to pledge that they will not develop or deploy Al music-generation technology, content, or tools that undermine or replace the human artistry of songwriters and artists or deny us fair compensation for our work.”

For a little while, there was some uncertainty about whether Ryan Gosling would perform his Barbie movie favorite “I’m Just Ken” at the 2024 Oscars. A few days ago, though, Variety confirmed that he will take the Academy Awards stage to bust out the song, and now the Academy itself has revealed the full list of musical performers set to play their songs at this year’s ceremony, on March 10 at 7 p.m. ET.

Who Is Performing At The 2024 Oscars?

There are five songs nominated for the Best Original Song award this year, and as Variety notes, all of them will be performed during this year’s ceremony. The list of songs and their performers is as follows:

Ice Spice And Billie Eilish Link Up Backstage At The People’s Choice Awards

Over the weekend, the People’s Choice Awards took place. The show honored a variety of the biggest entertainers of the year across film, television, and popular culture. The night’s awards were determined entirely by the people, who voted for their favorites in every category. Unsurprisingly, two of the biggest stars in music of the past year were present. Ice Spice had a breakthrough 2023 where she had four top 10 hits among collaborations with PinkPantheress, Taylor Swift, and Nicki Minaj. Billie Eilish scored one of the most critically acclaimed songs of the year with “What Was I Made For?” from the Barbie film soundtrack.

The two young stars met up backstage at the People’s Choice Awards where they snapped a quick photo that eventually made its way to Spice’s Instagram. “ima dip when i stack all my chips” she captioned the photo dump. It included pics of her entering the event, sitting at a table during it, interacting with fans, and even posing with an award she won. But it was the pic with Billie Eilish that had fans most excited and dreaming of what a collab between the two might sound like. “FINALLY A ICE SPICE X BILLIE PIC!!” one of the top comments on the post excitedly reads. Check out the full photo dump and fan reactions to it below.

Ice Spice took home the award for Best New Artist at this year’s People’s Choice Awards. She was one of the favorites to win the award at the Grammys earlier this month. But the award ultimately went to Victoria Monet. Spice was also nominated two more times for her song “Barbie World” with Nicki Minaj. Both of those awards ended up going to Killer Mike.

What do you think of Billie Eilish and Ice Spice posing for a pic backstage at the People’s Choice Awards? Would you be excited if the two decided to make a song together? Let us know in the comment section below.

Billie Eelish (Not A Typo) And Doja Catfish Prove Nickelodeon Clearly Had The Most Fun Super Bowl LVIII Broadcast

Billie Eilish Super Bowl Nickelodeon
Nickelodeon

Jim Nantz and Tony Romo are two of the best in the business when it comes to football broadcasting, which is why they were tasked with calling Super Bowl LVIII for CBS this weekend. So, all due respect to them and everybody else involved in the CBS broadcast, but Nickelodeon’s Super Bowl coverage was so clearly the most fun way to watch the big game.

Need proof? Take a look at the celebrities who were in attendance on the Nick broadcast. Offering some shots of CGI fish characters made to look like famous folks, Nick showed off aquatic music stars like Billie Eelish, Doja Catfish, and Herring Styles in the Bikini Bottom stands, along with other celebs like LePrawn James, Clamuel L. Jackson, and Fin Diesel.

Nick had a ton of fun beyond that, too. “Sweet Victory” finally made its first appearance at the big game. On top of that, SpongeBob SquarePants and Patrick Star were on hand to provide in-game commentary, alongside Noah Eagle and Nate Burleson. At one point during the game, the camera cut to Leonardi DiCaprio in attendance, and Tom Kenny (voicing SpongeBob as he has since 1999) had a great quip: “Leonardo DiCaprio, 25. That was about his dating history,” a perfect reference to this classic SpongeBob scene.

Goodbye Taylor Swift, Drake, Billie Eilish, And So On: UMG Has Officially Removed Its Artists’ Music From TikTok

TikTok logo
Getty Image

It happened: Universal Music Group has removed its artists’ songs from TikTok. As of today (February 1), official songs from artists signed to UMG labels no longer appear under the “Sounds” tab on the TikTok app, and previously published videos that featured those songs now have muted audio.

Impacted artists include Taylor Swift, Drake, The Weeknd, Bad Bunny, SZA, Olivia Rodrigo, Steve Lacy, Billie Eilish, Kendrick Lamar, Harry Styles, Rosalía, Ariana Grande, Justin Bieber, Adele, U2, Elton John, J Balvin, Pearl Jam, Bob Dylan, Post Malone, and many others.

TikTok and UMG had a licensing agreement that expired yesterday (January 31), and the day before it did, there were clear indications that negotiations on a new contract were not going well.

UMG shared an open letter about the situation, which read in part:

“As our negotiations continued, TikTok attempted to bully us into accepting a deal worth less than the previous deal, far less than fair market value and not reflective of their exponential growth. How did it try to intimidate us? By selectively removing the music of certain of our developing artists, while keeping on the platform our audience-driving global stars.

TikTok’s tactics are obvious: use its platform power to hurt vulnerable artists and try to intimidate us into conceding to a bad deal that undervalues music and shortchanges artists and songwriters as well as their fans.

We will never do that.”

TikTok then shared a response that reads in full:

“It is sad and disappointing that Universal Music Group has put their own greed above the interests of their artists and songwriters.

Despite Universal’s false narrative and rhetoric, the fact is they have chosen to walk away from the powerful support of a platform with well over a billion users that serves as a free promotional and discovery vehicle for their talent.

TikTok has been able to reach ‘artist-first’ agreements with every other label and publisher. Clearly, Universal’s self-serving actions are not in the best interests of artists, songwriters and fans.”

At the moment, it’s not clear when or if a new licensing agreement between TikTok and UMG will be reached, and when/if the artists’ music will return to TikTok.

Which UMG Artists Will Be Removed From TikTok?

drake

Beef between two major media companies was made public yesterday (January 30), and the feud could have a noteworthy impact on the day-to-day content people consume.

TikTok and Universal Music Group have a licensing agreement that expires today, and this agreement allows UMG songs to appear on the TikTok platform and be utilized in videos from TikTok users. Negotiations on a new contract have apparently been going poorly, as indicated by the open letters both companies shared criticizing each other. If a new deal isn’t reached, music by UMG artists could soon leave TikTok.

Which UMG Artists Will Be Removed From TikTok?

Let’s start by looking at what UMG is: Broadly speaking, it’s a massive company that owns a ton of recognizable record labels, including but not limited to Interscope, Geffen, Capitol, Def Jam, Island, Polydor, Republic, and Virgin Music Group.

So, presumably, in the event that a new licensing agreement is not reached, all acts on those labels would see their music leave TikTok. That includes so many hit-making artists, like Taylor Swift, Drake, The Weeknd, Bad Bunny, SZA, Steve Lacy, Billie Eilish, Kendrick Lamar, Harry Styles, Rosalía, Ariana Grande, Justin Bieber, Adele, U2, Elton John, J Balvin, Pearl Jam, Bob Dylan, and Post Malone.

Those artists have an estimated 950 trillion streams between them (note: exaggerated estimate for comedic effect only), and a ton of beloved acts not even mentioned above are also under the UMG umbrella. So, should their music be wiped off of TikTok, it would be a noticeable loss for the platform’s users.

Who Is Performing At The 2024 Grammy Awards?

The 66th Annual Grammy Awards are coming right up, as the 2024 ceremony is set to go down on February 4 at 8 p.m. ET. Aside from seeing who ends up winning what awards (find the list of nominees here), the other main appeal of the broadcast is checking out the live performances.

Who is performing at the 2024 Grammy Awards?

The first wave of performers was announced yesterday (January 15), and it’s short and sweet, featuring Olivia Rodrigo, Dua Lipa, and Billie Eilish (all of whom previously won the Grammy for Best New Artist, coincidentally). More artists are set to be announced as the ceremony approaches.

Eilish and Rodrigo have a lot on the line this year, as they’re both nominated for six Grammys. Eilish’s Barbie hit “What Was I Made For?” is up for Record Of The Year, Song Of The Year, Best Pop Solo Performance, Best Song Written For Visual Media, and Best Music Video, while her and Labrinth’s “Never Felt So Alone” is up for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance.

Rodrigo, meanwhile, is nominated for Album Of The Year, Best Pop Vocal Album (both for Guts), Record Of The Year, Song Of The Year, Best Pop Solo Performance (all for “Vampire”), and Best Rock Song (for “Ballad Of A Homeschooled Girl.”

Lipa’s Barbie song “Dance The Night” has a couple nods as well, for Song Of The Year and Best Song Written For Visual Media.
