Why Are Gamers Upset About Ludwig Göransson’s Oscars Acceptance Speech?

In a relatively short time, 39-year-old Swedish composer Ludwig Göransson has become a favorite of both hip-hop fans and geek fandoms online thanks to his expansive oeuvre. Since 2011, he’s garnered attention from the former for his production work alongside Childish Gambino, Kendrick Lamar, and more. Meanwhile, fans of sci-fi epics and superhero movies know him for his contributions to scores for massive multimedia franchises like the Marvel Cinematic Universe and Star Wars.

However, there’s one group that isn’t too happy with him this week: Gamers. A search for his name on social media outlets today would surface a roiling debate over Göransson’s comments on Sunday during his Oscars acceptance speech. After receiving the award for Best Original Score for Oppenhaimer (his second win after receiving one in 2018 for Black Panther), he thanked his parents “for giving me guitars and drum machines instead of video games.”

This has obviously riled the gaming community, who view themselves as oft-put-upon despite the gaming industry’s record worldwide profits and popularity. There’s probably a whole 2000-word article to be written about why they feel this way, but in general, they seem salty that Göransson appeared to deride their hobby in his thanks to his parents. Since I started off talking about hip-hop, there’s no better example to use here than the homie Mega Ran, a stalwart of the so-called “nerdcore” subgenre of rap, who called the comments “an unnecessary bit of shade.”

Over on Twitter, the discourse has gotten heated, with many gamers rightly pointing out that video games have featured or inspired some of the most recognizable music in pop culture, from the Mario theme to the chiptune subgenre that reproduces the 8- and 16-bit sounds of millennial nostalgia for original works.

Of course, there’s no speaking for Mr. Göransson either way, but whether he was legitimately putting games down or just joking about his parents’ refusal to let him have something many, many other ’90s kids begged their parents to have (many to no avail), one positive to take away from this whole kerfuffle is an appreciation of the wide range of musical styles in video game music. Maybe as a mea culpa, he can compose the music for a triple-A game or two, just to prove he can.

Cardi B Says She Ran Into “Somebody” At Vanity Fair Party & Fans Theorize It Was Saweetie

Cardi B says she ran “into somebody” at the Vanity Fair Oscar Party on Sunday and while she didn’t realize who it was, fans on social media are theorizing it was Saweetie. “I definitely ran into somebody,” she said on Instagram Live. “You know me, I don’t play that sh*t. But I’ll call you later ‘cause I’m on Live. I’ll tell you all the tea on her later. Bye.”

In addition to fans debating whether the “somebody” was Saweetie, users on Instagram complained about Cardi starting drama. “Mean girl behavior but yall swear it’s Nicki this girl need to be in jail honestly idk how she get away with the ish she do!!!” one fan commented on a post of the clip on The Neighborhood Talk. Another asked: “How she say she don’t like social media and have anxiety but yet stay on live rambling?”

Rumors of a feud between Cardi and Saweetie began back in 2022 when allegations surfaced that the rapper had an affair with Cardi’s husband, Offset. Cardi shot down the idea at the time. “No baby you lying,” she wrote on Twitter while going back and forth with a fan. “You makin crazy lies starting sh*t and putting female rappers in it WIT NO RECEIPTS, no blog ever spoke on this all of a sudden you come out of jail 5 days ago and you made up for lied in 2 hours wit NO RECEIPTS!” Saweetie also previously dated Offset’s Migos partner, Quavo, from 2019 to 2021.

Al Pacino Skips Announcing Nominees In Confusing Best Picture Announcement, “Oppenheimer” Wins

Al Pacino awkwardly presented the award for Best Picture at the 2024 Academy Awards on Sunday night. After walking on stage, he appeared not to have prepared much to say, struggled to open to envelope, and announced Oppenheimer as the winner without reading the nominees. “Here it comes,” the legendary actor said while taking his time to open the envelope. “And my eyes see… ‘Oppenheimer.’”

“Wish Al would have read all of the nominees first. I was looking forward to seeing the sizzle reels, and a bit of tension. #Oscars,” one fan on Twitter wrote. Other nominees in the category included American Fiction, Anatomy of a Fall, Barbie, The Holdovers, Killers of the Flower Moon, Maestro, Past Lives, Poor Things, and The Zone of Interest.

Another user remarked: “The downside of elderly legends giving out the biggest award. Pair them with a younger star to make sure they do what they are supposed to do or tape the announcement of the ten nominees. Disrespectful to not give them their due.” More users accused him of drinking backstage. Check out the viral moment when Pacino presented the award below.

Best Picture isn’t the only award Oppenheimer took home either. Cillian Murphy won Best Actor in a Leading Role while Christopher Nolan won Best Director. “Movies are just a little bit over 100 years old,” Nolan said in his best director acceptance speech. “Imagine being there 100 years into painting or theater. We don’t know where this incredible journey is going from here. But to know that you think that I’m a meaningful part of it means the world to me.” Be on the lookout for further updates from the Academy Awards on HotNewHipHop.

Usher, Busta Rhymes & Teyana Taylor Join Star-Studded Pre-Oscars Bash

The Academy Awards are almost upon us, and a slew of A-list celebrities chose to party in Hollywood ahead of Sunday night (March 10). Moreover, Usher, Busta Rhymes, and Teyana Taylor were among many in attendance for a pre-Oscars bash at the “Godfather” mansion in Beverly Hills on Friday night (March 8) for the William Morris Endeavor talent agency. Others that were there included John Legend, Leonardo DiCaprio, Tobey Maguire, and many more. Of course, as one of the entertainment industry’s biggest nights that encompasses a lot of different areas of it, it’s no surprise that many hip-hop artists have won big at the ceremony before.

While there’s not much of that this year, it will still be interesting to see if Oppenheimer ends up sweeping or if there will be some surprise picks. But Teyana Taylor is definitely one who could win big at the Oscars one day, as her creative strides extend far beyond just music. She is very prolific and beloved in the film industry, and is actually shooting a movie with Leonardo DiCaprio at press time. Hopefully the multi-hyphenate singer will one day grace that stage and accept the result of yet another big step in her trajectory.

Pre-Oscars Party At The Beverly Estate: Watch Clips

As for Usher, his big Super Bowl halftime show might win him an Emmy in one of the televised performance categories, but we don’t know how he would fare at the Oscars. Of course, he’s as good as writing, performing, and recording songs as ever, so we’re sure that he could get a nomination in the music categories one day. If you need contemporary proof of that, look no further than the Dallas native’s recently expanded album COMING HOME. Then try to tell anyone that he doesn’t at least have the potential to get that little golden statue for a big movie song or soundtrack.

Meanwhile, Busta Rhymes’ talent warrants all the awards in the world, and whatever he does with his career will be a treat. In fact, he just announced that his rap group, Flipmode Squad, will drop their first new album in over twenty years. Let’s see whether the Oscars this Sunday results in any more comeback announcements. For more news and the latest curious updates on the crossover between pop culture, R&B, and rap, come back to HNHH.

Who Is Performing At The 2024 Oscars?

Ryan Gosling Ken Barbie
Warner Bros.

For a little while, there was some uncertainty about whether Ryan Gosling would perform his Barbie movie favorite “I’m Just Ken” at the 2024 Oscars. A few days ago, though, Variety confirmed that he will take the Academy Awards stage to bust out the song, and now the Academy itself has revealed the full list of musical performers set to play their songs at this year’s ceremony, on March 10 at 7 p.m. ET.

Who Is Performing At The 2024 Oscars?

There are five songs nominated for the Best Original Song award this year, and as Variety notes, all of them will be performed during this year’s ceremony. The list of songs and their performers is as follows:

  • “The Fire Inside” from Flamin’ Hot (performed by Becky G, music and lyrics by Diane Warren)
  • “I’m Just Ken” from Barbie (performed by Ryan Gosling and Mark Ronson, music and lyrics by Mark Ronson and Andrew Wyatt)
  • “It Never Went Away” from American Symphony (performed by Jon Batiste, music and lyrics by Jon Batiste and Dan Wilson)
  • “Wahzhazhe (A Song For My People)” from Killers Of The Flower Moon (performed by Scott George and the Osage Singers, music and lyrics by Scott George)
  • “What Was I Made For?” from Barbie (performed by Billie Eilish and Finneas O’Connell, music and lyrics by Billie Eilish and Finneas O’Connell).

Jack Black’s ‘Peaches’ Song From ‘The Super Mario Bros. Movie’ Is Eligible For The 2024 Oscars

One of the surprise delights that awaited viewers of The Super Mario Bros. Movie was another classic Jack Black musical moment — one that has the internet’s attention in a chokehold. “Peaches,” a power ballad sung by Black as the film’s villain Bowser, who secretly pines for the Princess of the Mushroom Kingdom, has quickly become a fan favorite on social media.

Well, here’s some good news for those fans: According to Variety, “Peaches” will be eligible to win a Best Original Song Oscar at next year’s Academy Awards. Which, if you ask the legions of newly converted Bowswer fans, is an award it already has in the bag.

Universal appears to know this as well; in addition to highlighting the song on social media, the studio even commissioned a music video featuring Jack Black directed by hip-hop’s go-to director Cole Bennett, who applies his signature colorful aesthetic to the video.

The music in The Super Mario Bros. Movie has turned out to be an unexpected star with both classic pop needle drops and not one, but two notoriously bad Ninento-related raps of the ’90s returning to introduce heroes the Super Mario Bros. and Donkey Kong. The cast even made an appearance on late-night TV to perform an acapella version of the game’s iconic theme song.

Check out Bowser’s “Peaches” video above and try not to get it stuck in your head for the rest of the day.

Tems Offered A Simple Response To Criticisms Of Her Controversial 2023 Oscars Dress

Tems‘ Oscars dress was one of the most talked-about outfits this past weekend. During the Academy Awards, the Nigerian singer-songwriter, who was nominated for Best Original Song for her work on Rihanna’s “Lift Me Up” from Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, wore a white dress with a large puffy portion that wrapped around her head.

In pictures from the ceremony, some of the people seated behind Tems are seen struggling to see the stage, as Tems’ headpiece appears to obstruct the view. It appears Tems has caught wind of the comments.

Yesterday (March 13), she took to Instagram sharing pictures from the night, cheekily captioned, “Uh Ohh!”

She took to Twitter to double down on the fact that she is unbothered, sharing another set of photos captioned “Oops” with a blushing emoji.

Over the course of the night, the dress spurred mixed reactions from viewers.

“If I was I sitting behind Tems, I would be the most annoying asshole. Because WHY would you wear that and block people’s view???,” said one Twitter user.

Another Twitter user called the outfit “Very rude,” adding that “it shows her lack of self-worth.”

While some were not particularly thrilled about the outfit, several of Tems’ fans chimed in to defend the dress.

One fan said “Imagine waiting your whole life to be at the Oscars and having the Honor of Tems presence.”

Another fan suggested that the criticisms of her outfit may be rooted in racism, due to a lack of backlash for outfits worn by similar stars in the past.

“The backlash Tems is receiving from white people and Africans is just borne [sic] out of racial prejudice. Nothing more,” said another fan. “Where was that ‘rude’ talk when Gaga wore an outfit that blocked those behind her? It’s our sister now, and they are yapping, just to cancel her.”
