Tyler, The Creator’s “Wolf” Reaches Unexpected Streaming Milestone

Tyler, The Creator has undergone a staggering transformation over the last decade. He went from raucous and controversial rapper to critical darling. He went from being the guy who ate the roach in the “Yonkers” video to the guy who donned a blond wig for “EARFQUAKE.” It was an unexpected trajectory, but one that has seen Tyler accumulate an entirely different group of fans. There’s something to be said for the rapper’s early works, however. The qualities that made an album like Wolf polarizing are the very qualities that have allowed it to reach an impressive milestone on Spotify.

On May 26, Chart Data announced that Tyler’s sophomore studio album (and third project overall) has reached one billion streams on Spotify. It managed to do so in less than a decade, and without any major radio hits. Wolf didn’t have a single as notorious as “Yonkers” or a TV performance like “Sandwitches” to bolster its numbers, and yet, fans have kept coming back to it. Wolf has stood the test of time due to its quality, which something Tyler, The Creator hoped for back in 2013. “All the songs are my favorite for different reasons,” he told Fader. “I love the whole album.” Wolf was also the first time Tyler mixed an album by himself.

Tyler, The Creator’s “Wolf” Now Has One Billion Streams

“This is the first album I got to mix,” the rapper told the outlet. “I’m stoked I got to experience that. Now I know, next time, what sound I want and how I should approach it when it’s time to mix it and other sh*t like that.” The practice of learning what works and what doesn’t extends to the musical stylings on Wolf. Tyler, The Creator’s production was more lush than it had been on his previous releases, and there was an embrace of neo-soul and funk in ways that had only previously been teased. “Treehome95” points towards the rapper’s 2017 masterpiece Flower Boy. “PartyIsntOver/Campfire/Bimmer” is an early rendition of the multi-part songs that would dominate 2021’s Call Me If You Get Lost.

These sonic leaps exist with classic Odd Future anthems like “Domo23” and “Trashwang.” It’s jarring as a cohesive listen, but it also speaks to Tyler, The Creator’s staggering versatility. The fact that he could rap over “Tamale” and croon over the title track puts him in rarified air. Wolf will never accumulate the artistic praise of Tyler’s subsequent albums. That said, the album’s ability to reflect the rapper’s past while pointing towards his musical future is undeniable. The streaming numbers prove it.

Dame Dash Was Confident Jay-Z And Nas Beef Would Never Get Violent

Dame Dash has had a lot to say regarding rap battles as of late. The Roc-A-Fella co-founder gave his thoughts on the Drake vs. Kendrick Lamar situation, and how it compared to the one he was directly involved in between Jay-Z and Nas. Dash claimed that the the former was actually the best battle he ever saw, and part of the reason why is because of how intense it got. The mogul was surprised by the things Drake and Lamar said to each other. When it came to the Jay vs. Nas situation, however, he was confident as to how it would go from the start.

Dame Dash discussed the Jay and Nas battle during a recent appearance on the Moguls In the Making podcast. He was asked to reflect on the back-and-forth between the iconic rappers, which led the mogul to assert that he never feared for his life. Or Jay-Z’s life, for that matter. He was positive that Nas was not going to push things in a violent direction. “There was no fear of us getting hurt when it came to Nas,” he told the hosts. “I’m telling you right now, there was no fear of any violence when it came to that. There was no fear when it came to us of any battle that we had when it came to violence. We were never worried about that.”

Dame Dash Recalled Having “No Fear” About Bloodshed

When asked to elaborate on the point of violence, Dash compared the battle to the one that predated it by several years: Biggie vs. 2Pac. “Now, ‘Pac and Biggie, n**gas got killed,” he asserted. “But n**gas get killed in Hip Hop now. They be battling and then they end up dead. It’s a little more serious now.” Dash’s comment about Nas not being the type to resort to violence was a compliment, as he knew the rapper to be a stand-up person. If anything, Dame Dash has been more critical of Jay-Z in the years since the beef blew over.

Dash was furious when Jay-Z apologized to Nas following the release of the diss “Super Ugly.” He told the hosts of the CEO Show in 2023. “I was hitting him from the thing like, ‘Get off the radio! We looking crazy!’ And Irv [Gotti] did that sh*t,” he recalled. “A Queens n**ga, he gave him — pause — the banana in the tailpipe. That was a Queens thing — he didn’t even see that. Yo Irv, stay out my business.” Thankfully, to Dash’s point, everybody involved has lived to reflect on the beef.

Rolling Stone Expose Details An Alleged Diddy Assault At A College

Diddy’s reputation as a dangerous and destructive individual has been well-established over the past eight months. The Bad Boy founder has been publicly disgraced in the form of lawsuits and a video in which he assaults his ex-girlfriend, Cassie. More lawsuits are surfacing on a weekly basis, and 50 Cent recently sold a documentary series about the mogul’s alleged crimes to Netflix. Rolling Stone magazine is the latest outlet to peel back the curtain on the Diddy story.

The outlet published a detailed expose of the business titan on May 28. The expose detailed his rise to fame, his subsequent relationship with Cassie, and the current state of his career. It recapped several of the lawsuits that have already been made public, but it also delved into an alleged assault that had been previously unreported. The alleged assault dates back to the 1990s, when Diddy was a college student at Howard University. Rolling Stone collected testimony from three different witnesses who claim that the future rapper would repeatedly attempt to get a student he was dating to ditch class, and the times she refused, he would become angry and make a scene.

“He screamed and hollered and acted a stone fool until she came downstairs,” one student recalled. Another source claimed that Diddy used a belt to repeatedly strike the woman in question. “She was trying to defend herself a little bit,” another witness stated. “She was crying. And we were telling him, ‘Get off of her.’ We were screaming for her.” The same witness summarized the incident, plainly and sadly: “[Puff] whupped her butt — like really whupped her butt.” The alleged victim declined to speak with Rolling Stone.

The expose posits this instance as the first in what would become a pattern for Diddy. A student who knew both Diddy and the unnamed victim recalled tension whenever the former was around. “She would tense up [when Combs appeared],” they recalled. “He just had a weird control thing. I felt like she was fearful.” The widespread belief that Diddy’s public apology was insincere stems from the sheer number of times he’s been accused of assault. Cassie’s former makeup artist, Mylah Morales, dismissed the apology out of hand. “If was apologetic about it, he would mention [Cassie’s] name, but he didn’t,” she told Extra TV. “That’s what I don’t understand… Just a PR stunt.”

The 12th album’s title, The Death Of Slim Shady hints that Eminem will kill off his irreverent, unfiltered alter ego, Slim Shady. In a clip shared to Instagram, Eminem is seen on a FaceTime call with world-famous musician, David Blaine.

Em then asks Blaine for tips on a strange magic tragic.

“I was wondering, how far can we go with this magic?,” asks Eminem in the video. “Like, can we do like a stunt or something?”

Blaine is then seen drinking from a glass of wine, and proceeds to bite off the rim of the glass. Eminem then reveals just what tricks he has up his sleeve.

“Well for my last trick, I’m going to make my career disappear,” Eminem says.

At the end of the clip, Em then reveals the title of his new single, “Houdini,” as well as its May 31 release date. Shortly after, fans can hear a brief instrumental of the track.

Eminem Unveils The Release Date For New Lead Single “Houdini”

Eminem has really been putting effort into the rollout of his new album. The Death of Slim Shady was announced the day of the NFL draft, and came complete with a mock true crime show about its titular character. An obituary was printed in Em’s hometown of Detroit, and now, the rapper has enlisted the help of magician David Blaine. Eminem released a promo on social media in which he Facetimed Blaine and announced the release date of his upcoming single.

The promo is a little more complicated than that premise might sound. Em rings Blaine up and gives him his due as the greatest of all time (magically speaking, of course). The magician then suggests they team up on something. Eminem asks how far they could go with magic, and Blaine responds by walking up to a table, drinking a glass of wine and then eating the glass. Eminem looks unimpressed. He’s got something more ambitious in mind. “Well for my last trick,” he tells Blaine. “I’m going to make my career disappear.” The magician is dumbfounded, but Eminem hangs up before he can explain. We then get a hard cut to a release date for the single “Houdini.”

Eminem’s New Single Will Drop On May 31

“Houdini” will be released on Friday, May 31. The promotional material for The Death of Slim Shady, and the title itself, suggested that Eminem would be laying his alter ego to rest. His comments towards Blaine suggest that the album may mark his last, however. The rapper has been frank about talking retirement in the past. He walked away from music for five years in the 2000s, and he admitted he was unsure how much longer he could rap during a 2010 interview with Vibe.

“I don’t know how much longer I have in this game,” Eminem told the outlet. “I’m always going to love hip-hop. But how much longer am I going to still do it? I couldn’t give you an answer. But the day that this is not better than the last will probably be the day I stop.” The rapper claimed he would always record his raps, but would cease to put them out after a certain point. ” I know it always makes me feel better to lay things to tape, and — ‘lay the tape.’ See, I’m old school,” he noted. We may be looking at the final stage for both Eminem and Slim Shady. If so, then “Houdini” will truly mark the beginning of the end.
