Tierra Whack is back. While seemingly half of the women in rap are busy chucking insults at one another lately, the former Philly battle MC is floating over all of it as she preps for the release of her debut album, World Wide Whack. After sharing the “Chanel Pit” video back in November, Whack follows up today with the video for “Shower Song.”
Although it’s a crowded release day, fans of innovative, left-of-center hip-hop should allow themselves to overlook “Shower Song.” The video, directed by Alex Da Corte, is a typical avant-garde Whack affair, with cartoony, pop art-influenced imagery blending stop motion animation, high fashion, and colorful sets that perfectly complement Whack’s playful delivery and the funky, uptempo beat. As far as the content goes, no, there are no acid-tongued jabs at any of her peers; in fact, it’s pretty mundane subject matter for a modern rap song.
Whack’s only boast here is that she sounds great singing in the shower while getting ready to start her day. The only brand she flexes is Dove soap. It’s kind of refreshing and it’s a cheeky, sly reminder that hip-hop is what we make it. It doesn’t have to be about street shootouts, drug sales, and traumatic relationships. It can be fun and bright and kind of silly and just about the regular stuff we all do every day. There’s room for more. Bravo to Tierra Whack for opening up the sonic palette and once again pushing boundaries — even if they aren’t the boundaries anyone expected to be pushed.

Tierra Whack set the rap world on its ear in 2018 with the release of the Whack World EP, garnering a buzz that has yet to die down. Since then, she’s released a handful of well-received singles, along with a trio of cheeky EPs highlighting the difficulty of classifying her sound (Rap?, Pop?, and R&B?, all in 2021). Today, though, she’s finally announced her long-awaited debut album, World Wide Whack, which drops on March 15 via Interscope. “I really took my time with this,” she wrote on her social channels. “So I hope you all enjoy it as much as I do.”
The first single will be called “Shower Song” and will come out this Friday, January 26. Whack previewed the song earlier this month with a snippet accompanied by a silly social video featuring bathwater and hot dogs. The song is upbeat and lighthearted with light funk production and Whack’s usual blend of singing, rapping, and offbeat humor.
Whack’s most recently released single, “Chanel Pit,” was released on November 7 last year, however, there are no indications as yet that it will appear on World Wide Whack. Still, it was during the Apple Music interview accompanying its release that she first hinted that her album was on the way, saying, “I promise. It’s done. It’s finished. We’re just making it all make sense, putting the pieces together, and we’re giving it to you.”

Tierra Whack has another hit on her hands. Today (November 7), the Philly rapper has shared her new single and video for “Chanel Pit.”
The song is a dedication to Whack‘s fans, who have gone hard for her over the years. She alludes to the mosh pits at her shows in the song’s chorus, as she sings “mosh pit smell like Chanel / Yes, Microsoft, I’ma Excel / nine, ten, eleven, f*ck 12,”
Whack is specifically alluding to the Chanel Gabrielle fragrance, which she has been wearing for years. In an interview with Apple Music 1’s Zane Lowe, Whack said the perfume has become her “signature scent.”
“I think I was at an event, a show, a concert or something, and [my friend] pulled up and he said he knew that I was there because he knows my scent,” said Whack. “I don’t know if it was an Earl Sweatshirt concert or something. It was something. But everybody’s like, moshing going crazy. And he was like, I was walking, he was like, ‘I smell Whack. She’s here.’ Then he made his way backstage and he found me, and he was like, ‘Yo.’ That always just stuck in my head.”
In the song’s accompanying music video, Whack is seen rapping, as she rotates through an automatic car wash, setting the stage for a new era.
Elsewhere in her aforementioned interview, Whack revealed that her new album will arrive early next year.
“I promise. It’s done. It’s finished,” said Whack. “We’re just making it all make sense, putting the pieces together, and we’re giving it to you.”
It’s common for artists who are good friends to collaborate with one another, but it hasn’t been necessary for Tierra Whack and Tyler, The Creator. Whack supported the hitmaker as his opener when his Call Me If You Get Lost Tour made its way to Australia and New Zealand. For years, Whack has been pelted with questions about some secret Tyler collaboration that has yet to surface. However, she told Complex that they don’t have hidden music anywhere and debunked claims about a release.
“Me and Tyler don’t have any music. We’re just friends,” Whack explained. “We were hanging out during [the Call Me If You Get Lost Tour] and we got to know each other better, and we [still] talk. But yeah, I think with artists sometimes, people just expect, like, ‘Oh, they both make music, so they should just go make music [together.]’ But sometimes, we just want to be friends with people without asking anything of them but just simply be my friend.”
Tierra Whack Shares Tyler’s Advice

“Tyler gives great advice. He’s a busy, busy man—I’m just grateful I’m his friend,” Whack continued. Then, she named lil Yachty as “one of my best friends.” She added, “He put all of us together on his [Lil Boat 3] project for the song ‘T.D’ So that was a huge blessing—me, Tyler, Yachty, and ASAP Rocky.” Regarding Tyler’s guidance, Whack revealed one piece of advice he gave her. It was about a distinctive characteristic that Whack thought about changing.
“You know Tyler is random. He’ll just be like, ‘Yo, don’t ever mess with your gap,’” she said. “I’ve thought about it in the past like, ‘Maybe I should get braces,’ but he has a gap, too. So he’s like, ‘We gotta represent.’ I love that though, because it’s like, ‘You know what? Tyler said no, so I’m not gonna do it.’”
Tierra Whack Teases New Project & What Fans Can Expect
Meanwhile, we haven’t received music from Whack since she shared her trifecta of EPs in 2021: Rap?, Pop?, and R&B? She’s buckled down and has been recording for her next project, and Whack gave insight as to the sound. “A little bit of everything: Pop, a little bit of Rock. We came out with Whack Worldto show you guys that I can do a little bit of everything,” she revealed. “I’m just trying to touch on every genre that I kind of already did. But it’s like the same thing, which is a lot, but it’s still coming back to me. With Whack World, we laid out the outline just to [show] people like, ‘Hey, we can do it all.’”
Fans of North Philadelphia’s Tierra Whack haven’t heard much from the spitter since her arrest in November for a loaded weapon. They have, however, become accustomed to her one-off, random freestyle uploads on social media. Now, the emcee is back with her second delivery of the year, this time rapping over SZA’s “Smoking on my Ex Pack” instrumental. Whack even alludes to her disorderly conduct charge in the new Instagram Reel.
Dressed in an “I Heart Me” tee and checkerboard hat, the Whack World artist starts off the freestyle announcing she’s back, seemingly missing her lyrical exercises. The rapper has only been heard on a snippet The Roots’ “Misunderstood“ track since her 2021 R&B?EP. “I’m not lightskin like Tiny, I ain’t throwin’ shade to her or Toya / B*tch I’m on pop, you’re nothing, Goya / I don’t ever panic ‘cause I got a good lawyer.” The last line in the bar alludes to her airport arrest, which according to her may have not ever happened. After a brief scoff, Tierra Whack goes on to tell fans not to believe everything they hear in the media.
”When I got arrested y’all acted surprised, but I had them bars ever since I was nine/ I was never arrested, the news is just lyin’,” Whack continues. “On a scale of one to eight, I give it a[n] eight, ‘cause that’s what I did.” Last year, her supporters were shocked at reports of the rapper’s gun being scanned by an X-ray checkpoint. The weapon was recovered with six bullets in the chamber, which authorities perceived to be a serious overlook. According to reports, Tierra Whack is licensed to carry.
This appears to be the first time Whack has spoken on the issue. She has, however, commented on a bevy of artists recently, most notably her favorite, “light skin” Eminem. “Eminem still the best rapper ever whether you can relate to him or not!” she tweeted on in January. Tierra’s followers jokingly responded to the serial troller, reminding her it was Martin Luther King Jr. Day among other things. Another responded with more encouraging words, tweeting that she’s a better rapper than he is.
