Takeoff was Quavo’s actual nephew.

Then, there was the alleged confrontation back stage at the Grammys. Quavo and Offset had to be separated before it escalated to a brawl – again, allegedly. Insiders say that the confrontation stemmed from the Grammy organizers wanting Offset to be part of the Takeoff tribute. But, Quavo was having none of it. Ice Cube’s Greatest Acting Roles

Legendary artist Ice Cube began his rise to fame as a member of N.W.A. with the debut of their album “Straight Outta Compton” in 1988. Two years later, Cube would embark on a solo career with his first album “AmeriKKKa’s Most Wanted” followed by “Death Certificate” in 1991, “The Predator” in 1992, and “Lethal Injection” in 1993. This run of albums was one of the greatest of all time and solidified the Los Angeles rapper as one of the most celebrated artists in West Coast Hip-Hop history. However, in 1991, Ice Cube also began his acting career, which has since spanned decades and become just as illustrious as his musical endeavors. Let’s take a look back at some of Ice Cube’s greatest acting roles.

Boyz in the Hood

Ice Cube’s first role as an actor when he played “Doughboy” in the classic film, “Boyz in the Hood”. It was directed by John Singleton. The film’s cast was star-studded. It featured actors such as Cuba Gooding Jr., Laurence Fishburne, Morris Chestnut, Nia Long, and Angela Bassett. Despite Cube’s inexperience in acting at this point, his performance is one of the most celebrated and remembered in the entire film.

In the film, Cube’s character Doughboy serves as a foil for Tre, played by Cuba Gooding Jr. While Tre has a strong connection with his father, and is taught about the proper values and respect within the world, Doughboy does not have that luxury and shows the pitfalls men can fall into without proper male role models. Doughboy ends up a member of the Crips and is arrested and forced to serve time in prison for stealing. Ice Cube’s background as a rapper who actually grew up in Southern Los Angeles adds a believability to the role. This could not have been captured with many other actors.

In the climax of the film, Doughboy kills Ferris, avenging his brother Ricky’s death after Tre decides not to retaliate against Ferris. After the murder, Ice Cube delivers a classic line. He says American media “don’t know, don’t show, or don’t care about what’s going on in the hood”. In “Boyz in the Hood”, Cube proved that he could act in a serious, major role. His performance probably ranks as one of the greatest film debuts of all time.

Friday

Perhaps Ice Cube’s greatest and most remembered performance came in the 1995 film “Friday”, directed by F. Gary Gray. “Friday” is one of the best comedies in the last thirty years. The lines from the film are still quoted regularly today. Many moments of the film have become relics of Black culture. In the film, Ice Cube plays “Craig”. He is a down on his luck young adult who was just fired from his job on his day off.

Craig, alongside his best friend Smokey, played by Chris Tucker, decide to spend their Friday off getting high on Craig’s front porch. Throughout the film, Craig and Smokey encounter crackheads, overly sexual preachers, and girls in their neighborhood they have interest in. Craig and Smokey are also terrorized by Deebo, played by Tommy Lister Jr. throughout the film, whose violence and affinity for stealing cause problems for everyone in the neighborhood.

Ice Cube’s performance in “Friday” is much different from his more serious portrayal of “Doughboy” in “Boyz in the Hood”. Cube was able to show his comedic side throughout the film. His chemistry with Chris Tucker elevated the film to exceptional heights. It was in “Friday” that Ice Cube showed the acting world how much range he had and allowed for him to escape the “typecasting” void that many celebrities turned actors can fall into if they are not able to diversify their performances on screen. The success of “Friday” led to two sequels in “Next Friday” in 2000 and “Friday After Next” in 2002. However, it is the original film that is the most beloved and celebrated by society today, which is in large part due to Ice Cube’s performance.

Barbershop

In 2002, Ice Cube also starred as the lead role in “Barbershop”. His performances throughout the entire “Barbershop” series rank as some of his best. In the original film, directed by Tim Story, Cube plays “Calvin”, a young man who inherited a struggling barber shop in the south side of Chicago from his father and is forced to decide if he should keep the shop or sell it. “Barbershop” mixes the genres of comedy and drama. Ice Cube’s roles in the “Friday” series and in “Boyz in the Hood” influence and morph his portrayal of Calvin.

It is in “Barbershop” that Ice Cube gives a full display of his acting abilities as he combines humor with drama. Cube also shifts away from his portrayal of younger, coming-of-age-esque characters. Instead, he is portrayed as a mentor and leader to other characters in the film. While both “Doughboy” and “Craig” were young adults in need of guidance, Calvin is a character who provides guidance to other characters in the film. This is especially true of his relationship with Ricky, who is played by Michael Ealy.

“Barbershop” was a display of Ice Cube’s growth as an actor with age. He proved that he could enmesh his comedic and dramatic portrayals into a mix of both. This created a more two-dimensional film. “Barbershop” was an instant commercial success, grossing $77 million in the box office on a $12 million production budget. The film also received many positive reviews from critics. It’s lasting legacy was proven when “Barbershop: The Next Cut” was released fourteen years after the original film in 2016.

Ride Along

In more recent years, Ice Cube starred in “Ride Along”, directed by Tim Story, alongside Kevin Hart. In “Ride Along”, Ice Cube plays a veteran cop named James. He gives Hart’s character Ben a chance to upgrade from being a security card to a police officer. The dynamic between Cube and Hart in this film is similar to his role alongside Chris Tucker. Hart is the over-the-top comedy figure, while Ice Cube is the straight man with moments of humor in different places.

“Ride Along” also features a second film in which Ice Cube and Laurence Fishburne star together. Fishburne portrays Omar, the lead villain of the film. The LA native is able to combine a realistic portrayal of a tough guy while providing lots of comedic moments. “Ride Along” was a great box office success, as it grossed $154.5 million on a $25 million production budget. The success of the initial film also led to a sequel, “Ride Along 2”. It was directed by Tim Story and featured Ice Cube and Kevin Hart in similar roles. “Ride Along 2” also grossed over $100 million at the box office.

While Ice Cube may be primarily known for his musical success, his acting career is also full of legendary performances and classic movies. Even with his creation of the “BIG3” basketball league in 2017, Ice Cube has proven that his genius extends far beyond the musical realm. Ice Cube’s roles in films such as “Boyz in the Hood” and “Friday” have provided audiences with some of the most memorable quotes and scenes of the last thirty years and Cube’s legacy as an actor proves just as iconic as his musical career.

Every Movie Tupac Appeared In

It is common knowledge that the late and great Tupac Shakur will eternally hold a profound and powerful impact on the genre of hip-hop and rap. But, one tends to wonder how his career would have further flourished had his magical talents been lent towards the crafting of hit motion pictures.

The ”Keep Your Head Up” maestro has produced various film-making credits since the peak of 1991 with his very first feature role per the dark comedy flick Nothing but Trouble (1991) before tragically concluding his film career through the cult classic Gang Related (1997). Here is a complete break-down of 2Pac’s filmography released while alive or otherwise posthumously:

Nothing but Trouble (1991)

whic

A horror comedy movie that centers on a traveling, wealthy New York clique who are all apprehended by police after running a stop sign in a poor village and are held hostage at a 106-year-old judge’s run-down courthouse. The group is then met with disturbing encounters with the judge’s inbred family as they plot on how to escape before their grotesque punishment is revealed to them.

The bizarre feature not only involved A-listers like Dan Aykroyd (Ghostbusters) and Demi Moore (Ghost, G.I. Jane) but also entailed assistance from 2Pac and his former collective Digital Underground. The group makes a cameo in one scene where they are performing their club hit “Same Song” (1990) before the decaying judge’s podium as hopeful effort to be released from the mad house. Subsequently, they end up walking away scot-free with their musicality while the wealthy New Yorkers are left behind concocting their next getaway plan.

What makes this film not only stand out as 2Pac’s debut acting feature, but it also marks his first time piecing material for an original motion picture soundtrack. He recorded “Same Song” and “Tie the Knot” as cuts for Nothing but Trouble’s score.

Despite his appearance, the film did little to save itself from harsh criticism from both the public and the press. It secured a dishonorable Golden Razzie win for Worst Supporting Actor. It was later dubbed as one of the biggest box office duds in cinematic history.

Juice (1992)

One year following the disastrous phenomenon with Nothing, 2Pac gave acting another shot. But, this time on his own terms without musical restraints from Digital Underground. He returned to his birth-state New York to begin readings for the thriller Juice. He was cast as fictionalized troubled character Roland Bishop. The film follows four friends caught in a domino effect of peril after Pac’s character’s begins scouting out for homicidal trouble in an ill-ridden attempt to achieve power and respect.

The film became an outstanding hit with both critics and viewers, generating over $20 million at the box office. It secured a 79% favorable rating with Rotten Tomatoes and a “B+” rating given by Entertainment Weekly.

Poetic Justice (1993)

As another year went by, so came forth another acting shot for Mr. Shakur. The next deal on the table was co-starring with reigning pop queen Janet Jackson for the drama feature Poetic Justice.

Directed by John Singleton, the film narrates South Los Angeles poet Justice (Jackson) who is battling with depression. This was stemming from the murder of her late boyfriend. Mail clerk Lucky (Shakur) is dealing with emotional abuse and trauma sustained from his crack-addiction.  As the plot progresses, the characters who were initially reluctant towards one another begin to grow close during a road trip. They soon develop a strong bond with one another.

Though the film failed to appease critics it did not waver one bit with viewers. Poetic successfully generated well over $27 million against its $14 million budget. Both Janet’s and Tupac’s groundbreaking appearances would later be recognized as one of the earliest films to help shine the light on how depression can be riddled in the black community

Above the Rim (1994)

Spring 1994 welcomed the release of Above the Rim, which follows two key characters training for a basketball game. One out of the two is a star athlete-turned-coach who is heavily disliked by the film’s protagonist (Kyle, played by Duane Martin) but comes around after 2Pac’s character Birdie tries his hardest to deviate the young man’s chances of winning the basketball game through humiliation and attempted murder.

Tupac’s excellent and convincing performance of the antagonizing b-ball player helped accumulate over $16 million at the box office against the film’s $6.5 million budget. Additionally, Pac contributed two tracks to the original motion picture soundtrack (“Pour a Little Liquor”, “Loyal to the Game”. These both attained rave reviews from critics and topped the Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart.

Conclusively, this would be Shakur’s overall second-to-last film that would be released during his lifetime.

Murder Was the Case: The Movie (1995)

The final film of 2Pac released during his lifetime, and his role is a bit ironic. In the movie, 2Pac makes a cameo in the 18-minute flick as a sniper. The film essentially narrates the fictional tale of Pac’s colleague Snoop Dogg being murdered in the wee hours of the night, only to be resurrected by an evil force following a sealed deal with the devil.

Much like Above the Rim, Pac agreed to make musical contributions for Murder’s soundtrack; however, the emblem “Life’s So Hard” would be saved in the vault for two years to make entry for another one of 2Pac’s filming soundtracks. The reasoning for the “Hard” tune to be opted remains unclear to this very day.

Bullet (1996)

The first posthumous film of Tupac Shakur; this particular movie was shot two years prior to Pac’s murder and centers on the fictional narrative of two dealers. They go at each other’s neck over previous disturbances and long-held grudges that have troubled their day-to-day operations as dealers, thus in turn intensifying a brewing gang war.

The film co-stars esteemed actor Mickey Rourke and Dominican performer Manny Perez. The film hit theaters in October 1996, one month after Pac was shot to death.

Gridlock’d (1996)

Another feature film co-starring the late Shakur that was released posthumously four months after his death. The movie takes viewers on a ride with Tupac’s fictional posse of struggling heroin addicts. They try to make it big in the music world amid their troubles with their spoken word musicality.

The film did not do so hot at the box office, but Tupac was the one that received critical praise. The film’s director Vondie Curtis-Hall who took a liking to Shakur’s on-screen chemistry with lead star Tim Roth.

Gang Related (1997)

The final film that would conclude 2Pac’s short-lived filming career. The movie revolves around two corrupt detectives (one played by Pac), who are both looking to frame anyone in sight for a murder they committed upon an undercover DEA agent.

As the film progresses, the two lead characters turn on one another as their devious blame game falls through. This resulted in the immediate death of 2Pac’s character firstly and then conclusively lead portrayal James Belushi’s character.

Shooting for the film took place one month prior to Tupac’s harrowing death.

Long before his saddening passing, the legend was due to be a part of over five filming projects. These included: Menace II Society (1993), Low Down Dirty Shame (1994), Higher Learning (1995), Star Wars Episode I – The Phantom Menace (1999), and Baby Boy (2001). The latter of which paid tribute to the fallen star with use of archival footage.

Pusha T Remixes “White Lines” By Melle Mel To Promote “Cocaine Bear” Movie

I mean, of course he did. Pusha T just announced his new song to promote the movie Cocaine Bear in theaters this week. Moreover, it’s a remix of Melle Mel’s classic 1983 single “White Lines (Don’t Don’t Do It).” With that classic drum beat behind it, and those gorgeous backing vocals, Push did what he does best. “All white, all winter,” he raps. “Even snow in the summer / The high fallin’ from the sky / Are you the hunted or the hunter?” Overall, it seems like it’s going to be a pretty cheeky track, especially from the current king of coke rap.

However, there is a bit of confusing information going around about this song, at least as of writing this article. While the film’s official Instagram page says the lyric video is out now, it can’t be found on YouTube. For now, it seems that the most we have of the song is a Twitter video uploaded by Push himself. Unfortunately, though, the snippet of the song mashes up with audio and dialogue from the attached trailer. Well, at least it does contain lyrics, but they’re hardly necessary for his authoritative and clear delivery. The Virginia Beach-based MC is one of the top lyrical and artistic dogs of the moment, with impeccably smooth flows and consistent writing.

Pusha T’s Cocaine Bear Track

What’s more is that this is just a side quest for Pusha T’s upcoming main mission: his Gangsta Grillz tape with DJ Drama. Recently, he spoke glowingly of his excitement for the project and credited Tyler, the Creator with revitalizing mixtape excellence. “I just feel like to me, the Gangsta Grillz and the whole mixtape culture and scene is what I’m about. That’s the purest form of Hip Hop to me,” he told Complex. “The fact that Drama is having so much success, the fact that that’s what I love in Hip Hop, I want to merge those worlds and see what happens.” Not only that, but he apparently has a solo album in the works as well.

“I’m going to be honest with you,” the 45-year-old added. “Seeing Drama’s mixtape with Tyler and how they won a Grammy, I was like, ‘Man, mixtapes really won a Grammy.’ So I’m trying to be a part of that culture as well.” Check out the Cocaine Bear track above and stick around on HNHH for the latest greatness from Pusha T.

Gorillaz Movie Canceled By Netflix

In October 2020, Gorillaz frontman Damon Albarn announced that the band had a movie in the works. The English group confirmed that they had “signed contracts” with Netflix just a year later, according to NME. With co-creator Jamie Hewlett pioneering the iconic cartoons that represent the band, the project was to be an animated movie using Gorillaz’s branded characters.

Unfortunately, Albarn confirmed in an interview with HUMO that “it will never happen.” Netflix has allegedly canceled the film due to cutbacks in the network’s animation department. The 54-year-old musician explained the situation bluntly. “The streaming platform for which we were making the film has withdrawn,” he said. “They started to panic because they were making too much content and decided to cut back on their movie offerings.”

Gorillaz’s Iconic Characters Get The Boot

Albarn continued to throw shade on the “classic Hollywood practice.” The English-Icelandic singer reflected on how the Netflix representative the band was working with had left the company. “From then on you have lost your guardian angel, and there seems to be a bad smell hanging on you,” he began. “Hollywood is quite territorial: if a new guy comes along, he must and will have a different opinion, even if he secretly agrees with his predecessor.”

When Albarn initially announced the project, he spoke with Apple Music enthusiastically. “I’m at Netflix because we’re making a full-length Gorillaz film,” he told the streaming service. “Yeah, we’re having a writing session in Malibu this afternoon. It’s really exciting to do that. It’s something we’ve been wanting to do for a very long time. It’s been through so many incarnations…this Gorillaz doing a movie. Honestly.”

Gorillaz Not Giving Up, Despite Cancellation

Despite the disappointing setbacks of their movie, the band will be releasing its eighth studio album, “Cracker Island” on Friday (February 24th). Although we won’t be seeing the Gorillaz characters on our Netflix screens, the band dropped their “Silent Running” single featuring Adeleye Omotayo earlier this month. Check out the music video for that above. As always, stay tuned to HNHH for the latest news on your favorite hip hop artists.
