Don’t Forget About Latto

2024 has been an embarrassment of riches for rap fans. Breakout projects like Doechii’s Alligator Bites Never Heal, solid career evolutions such as Megan Thee Stallion’s Megan, and assertive declarations of conflict like Kendrick Lamar’s GNX have had seismic effects on the landscape of hip-hop this year, upending a decade of status quo and shaking up the outlook for the future of rap.

Amid all that, though, it feels like some stuff got lost in the shuffle; namely, Atlanta superstar Latto, whose third studio album Sugar Honey Iced Tea was not only her best, but did what each of the above-mentioned releases did — all in one sturdy collection of 17 versatile tracks. Fortunately, Latto’s tour for the project brought a welcome reminder of all that she’s capable of and just how big of an impact she’s had herself lately.

Firstly, it’s impossible to start anywhere but on Latto’s importance for the girlies. Women in rap have often expressed their feeling of being outsiders in the genre, calling it a “male dominated” culture in which women are not just a minority, but are boxed into just one or two archetypes. Newer rappers like Cardi B, Doja Cat, and Megan Thee Stallion have done a bunch of needed work to carve out space for women in rap, but in the past eight years of going to their shows, never have I ever felt quite so outnumbered by women as at YouTube Theater on Sunday night (December 1), seemingly all of them decked out in Latto’s signature leopard print.

No exaggeration, the ratio had to be 20 women to every one dude. They even commandeered the men’s restrooms; I’ve seen this happen before but never to the point that there’s a line for both. Sure, women rappers have created women-friendly spaces on their tours, but Latto’s crowd took this to even greater heights than any of her peers — which makes sense, because at heart, she’s a girl’s-girl, sharing her platform with openers in Karrahbooo and Mariah The Scientist who have been unfairly perceived in relation to their relationships with men. Flo Milli also popped out for a surprise performance of her hit, “Never Lose Me” during Latto’s sole wardrobe change (from the aforementioned animal print to baggy pants and crop top Crenshaw sweater. Long live Nipsey Hussle).

And while her main conflict with another woman spawned from a complaint about her genre classification, the setlist for the Sugar Honey Iced Tea Tour pointedly leaves out Latto’s biggest pop hit, “Big Energy.” Instead, the Georgia peach focused intently on her latest album and the more hardcore hits from her previous projects, emphasizing her rap credentials. This turned out to be a wise move, as some of the biggest crowd pops came for trap anthems like the breakdown on “Big Mama,” “B*tch From The Souf,” “Chicken Grease,” “Muwop,” and 2024 singles “Put It On Da Floor,” “Sunday Service,” and “Brokey.”

As much fuss as rap fans made over Doechii’s raps on songs like “Boom Bap” and “Nissan Altima,” Latto’s latest proved she could get equally introspective on “Georgia Peach,” which opened the show, and “S/O To Me,” to which fans may have attributed some Drake influence, but is all Latto’s story and pen. Speaking of Drake, his verses were clipped from just about every song he would have appeared on — even during the warmup DJ set — but hey, at the time Latto was plotting out the tour, including him was a good business move. It wasn’t until hometown hero Kendrick Lamar lyrically dismantled him and brought out his inner Karen that former collaborators started turning on him.

But for all the attention heaped onto the phenomenon that was “Not Like Us,” in a just world, Latto would have received just as much for “Put It On Da Floor” and “Sunday Service,” — which, if you’ll remember, actually kicked off much of the combative energy of 2024 alongside Megan Thee Stallion’s “Hiss.” Latto may not have whacked her rival quite as directly, but the fact that her bellicose invitations to step into the arena both reached the Hot 100 (the latter at No. 100, while the former peaked at No. 13) shows she’s got just as much of a knack for making battle rap club friendly as the Compton native.

If Sugar Honey Iced Tea is a reminder to the world that Latto is not to be overlooked, then the tour is a welcome reminder of the reminder. Latto has spent years proving her rap cred, then spent much of the past year proving her pop potential. But while many of her predecessors and peers might have been happy to take the bag and coast, Latto went back to the lab to double down on demonstrating her rap roots — and polishing her stage show, which has somehow massively improved since the last time I saw her live at The Novo while working on our cover story on her. She belongs in the conversation about the best rappers out today, and she’s making sure you never forget it.

Mariah The Scientist Causes Controversy By Skipping Out On Tour Date After Young Thug’s Release

Mariah The Scientist faced a pretty difficult roadblock recently that we certainly don’t envy: love or duty? If you’re reading this from under a rock, you might not know that her boo Young Thug recently left prison after taking a plea deal in the YSL RICO case. The singer shared her heartfelt gratitude for this and for fans’ support during a recent tour stop, as she joined KARRAHBOOO as a supporting act for Latto’s Sugar Honey Iced Tea trek. But it seems like she chose love. Moreover, fans took to social media to debate after a clip emerged from a Cincinnati show on Friday (November 1) after Mariah canceled her appearance at it.

“Hey Cincinnati! Due to unforeseen circumstances, Mariah The Scientist will no longer be joining us for @Latto’s show at The Andrew J Brady Music Center® tonight,” the venue tweeted. “Don’t worry, Latto and Karrahbooo will still be there to bring you an unforgettable night…” Rather than showing up to perform, she called in via FaceTime, which was displayed on screen as fans sang her track “Spread Thin” to her.

Furthermore, it’s unclear if Mariah The Scientist will return to the tour soon (which ends on December 7) or if this is a permanent decision. Some fans completely understand why she would want to presumably take time off to be with Young Thug, whereas others pointed to her responsibility to respect ticket holders and fulfill her commitment. It’s definitely one of those situations that’s hard to make a judgement call on unless you face it yourself. After all, Thugger was in jail for a long time, so he waited as long as Mariah has. Despite their hardships, they look forward to spending this time together.

“There was people who was telling me I would never see him again,” Mariah The Scientist expressed during a recent tour stop. “There was people who was laughing at me and laughing at our situation and making fun of us. Man, this s**t so f***ing crazy, man. This was supposed to be a prayer, hold on. Thank you, God, and Amen. Now back to me. All you motherf***ers who doubted me, and doubted this s**t, and said this n***a was never coming back, f**k all of y’all. What you gon’ say now, b***h?”

Mariah The Scientist Almost Breaks Down In Tears While Reacting To Young Thug’s Freedom

Young Thug just took a plea deal in his YSL RICO case yesterday (Thursday, October 31), and he was reportedly released from prison with 15 years of probation. Of course, his freedom comes with many special conditions and considerations, but the rap community is reacting wildly to this news from the longest criminal trial in Georgia history. One of the happiest folks about all this is Thugger’s boo Mariah The Scientist, who recently reacted to his freedom during a live show. It was a very emotive moment of both prayer and responding to trolls who didn’t think this day would ever come.

“I just want to thank God for the day,” Mariah The Scientist expressed during a concert about Young Thug’s freedom. “I want to thank him for life, light, and love… for our family and our friends… for Jeff and our relationship… for covering us with the blood of Jesus, protecting us, keeping us safe. Every day. This has really been a long time coming, and it has been really hard. But I’m appreciative that you kept showing up for me and supporting me.

Mariah The Scientist Speaks On Young Thug Release

“There was people who was telling me I would never see him again,” Mariah The Scientist continued concerning Young Thug. What you gon’ say now, b***h? Now when I say Thug, we got to switch it up! […] This s**t is so f***ing unbelievable. But let’s just make it to the end so I can get on this jet. You know what I’m finna do.”

Meanwhile, this comes as others like YSL Woody are reacting to the Young Thug situation with very thankful and appreciative messages. Others aren’t so pleased, but probation and a lot of reform could lead to a brighter path ahead for the Atlanta rapper.

Mariah the Scientist Reacts to Young Thug’s Homecoming on Stage: ‘Let’s Just Make It to the End So I Can Get on This Jet’

unnamed 13

Mariah the Scientist was performing in Brooklyn on Halloween, but she was ready to get home to her man, Young Thug. While speaking with fans, she stated, “This shit is so fuckin unbelievable.”

She added, “Let’s just make it to the end so I can get on this jet.”

Young Thug is coming home after a dramatic turn of events. He pleaded guilty to many but not all of the charges against him in the sprawling RICO trial, which was the longest in the history of Georgia’s criminal justice system.

Essentially Thug pleaded nolo contendere, or no contest, to conspiracy to violate the RICO Act and to a leadership charge on criminal participation in criminal gang activity. Sheesh. But look, he’s taking responsibility and the state has agreed.

As for the release conditions Thugger must adhere to to stay out of the system, it pretty much goes like this:

  • Young Thug will serve five years in prison, which has been commuted to time already served
  • Time serve is followed by 15 years of probation.
  • An additional 20 years are backloaded, meaning he could serve this time in custody if he violates probation.
  • Young Thug is prohibited from contacting any other co-defendants in the RICO case, with two exceptions he specifically requested: his biological brother and fellow rapper Gunna so he can maintain his music career.

When we learn more we will post. Stay tuned!

Mariah The Scientist Called Young Thug’s Impending Release ‘More Than What We Prayed For’

Young Thug is soon to be a free man after more than two years in jail. The Atlanta trap mainstay has accepted a plea deal that will ensure his release, pleading no contest to charges of racketeering and other crimes. He has been sentenced to 15 years of probation.

R&B singer Mariah The Scientist, Thug’s girlfriend, reacted to the news in a text to WSBTV’s Michael Seiden, who contacted her for comment. She replied:

“Thank you God, thank you God. This is more than what we prayed for. We are so grateful, this is the greatest opportunity we’ve ever been presented with and we are so grateful. Thank you Judge Paige Whitaker for giving us the opportunity to move forward with our life! Thank you God. Thank you Brian Steel and Keith Adams and every attorney working on this case, tireless. THANK YOU! I cannot say it enough, I cannot repay you for this. You have changed our lives, Jeffery’s life and mine. Thank you to everyone who has been there for us, every fan, who believed in us and prayed for us.”

Thug’s trial was the longest in Georgia history — and possibly, its most dramatic. Over the course of the past year, the case went through three judges, a criminal contempt charge for Thug’s lawyer Brian Steel, and a slew of delays. It also met enormous backlash for using lyrics as evidence in what some observers called a racist application of Georgia’s racketeering law.

Latto Supposedly Isn’t Happy With How The Opening Night Of Her ‘Sugar Honey Iced Tea Tour’ Went

Yesterday (October 25), UPROXX cover star Latto launched her Sugar Honey Iced Tea Tour. Despite the beautiful weather in Tampa, Florida, a storm seems to be brewing within Latto’s tour crew.

In a video circulating (viewable here) among the “Georgia Peach” rapper’s fan pages, Latto expressed her pleasure with the Sugar Honey Iced Tea Tour‘s opening night at Yuengling Center. While this clip doesn’t show on any of Latto’s social media pages, supporters believe the behind-the-scenes vlog was a “post and delete” based on the visual matching the background of other uploads.

“Show was a hot mess,” she said. “Could’ve been worse. But, hey baby, what can you do. I did my job.”

However, Latto went on to reassure fans that she is going to have a long chat with the technical hands involved with the North American run. “I did my job,” she said. “[The] lighting [crew is] getting cussed out. [The] video [crew is] getting cussed out. [The] wardrobe [team is] getting cussed out.”

Although Latto didn’t feel the set was up to her standards that didn’t stop fans show showering her with gifts. In the video, she went on to showcase several items given to her including a customized photo in decked out framing. On her Instagram stories, she shared a photo of a miniature teddy bear sporting a “Big Mama better” t-shirt.

Latto’s next performance is set to take place on Sunday, October 27 in Tennessee at the Nashville Municipal Auditorium. Ticket holders are hoping all production hiccups are worked out by then.

Mariah The Scientist Admits To Dating Lil Yachty After He Denied The Rumors

Mariah the Scientist and Lil Yachty have had a bizarre relationship over the years. The R&B singer and rapper have been hounded by dating rumors dating back to 2022. Mariah the Scientist has been quiet about her feelings toward Yachty, but the latter has claimed that there was never romance between the two of them. Mariah the Scientist broke her silence on the topic of Boat during her recent appearance on Caresha Please. The singer stated, without a doubt, that she dated Lil Yachty.

The podcast host asked whether Mariah the Scientist had ever written songs about Lil Yachty, given how long they have known each other. The singer was reluctant to answer at first. After a long pause, though, she let the cat out of the bag. “We dated,” she said. “I [actually] met him in high school, but by the time I got to college we started dating a little bit.” Mariah the Scientist attributed their break up to the fact that Lil Yachty’s career exploded. “I was just a broke college student,” she noted. Shortly before they parted ways, however, Mariah wrote the rapper two songs.

Mariah The Scientist Claims She Dated Boat In College

Mariah the Scientist claimed she gifted Lil Yachty the songs on an iPod, but that he refused to listen to them. “He said, ‘I don’t wanna Joan you,’” the singer recalled. “‘So I’m not listening to this sh*t.’” This is a far cry from what Lil Yachty said about their relationship on Twitter in 2023. The rapper voiced frustration over fans questioning him, and insisted there was nothing between him and Mariah. “Why do y’all keep trying me over this woman,” he tweeted. “I been [quiet] for so long but please stop making up this weird a*s false narrative.” Boat also criticized the singer for not speaking out against the rumors. “And the fact Mariah just let all these lies go is weird on me,” he added.

Lil Yachty was even accused of getting a friend of Mariah’s pregnant. He promptly denied this, and took fans to task for getting caught up in fake drama. “This is also just not true,” he noted. “Lmao they were never friends…. EVER never met. Rarely ever had a full conversation. [They] just followed each other… U R WEIRD!!!!!!!!!!!” Lil Yachty has not responded to Mariah the Scientist’s latest claims. He’s busy going back and forth with another female artist, Karrahbooo. The former Concrete Boys rapper claimed Boat had help writing his last solo album, and denied these allegations via Twitter.

Young Thug Sends Mariah The Scientist A Sweet Message In Court As Mistrial Rumors Continue

Young Thug and the rest of the YSL codefendants in their RICO case might get a huge update soon, but until then, Thugger is still holding his relationship down in court while he hopes to make it out. Today (Thursday, October 24), he reportedly wore a hoodie that read “I [heart] Mariah” – a nod to his boo Mariah The Scientist – according to TMZ Hip Hop. She’s been incredibly supportive of him throughout all this, carving out the time to visit as frequently as possible, advocate for his freedom, and speak about his everyday updates. Even though they have no idea when they’ll see each other again, it seems like they are still going as strong as ever. Check the picture of the hoodie out by clicking the “Via” link down below.

Furthermore, Young Thug wore this hoodie as the judge reportedly cleared the courtroom to talk to him, also dismissing proceedings for the day. The court in the YSL RICO trial will convene again on Monday morning (October 28), where the judge will possibly make a decision regarding the defense’s latest call for a mistrial and potential plea deals for codefendants. Still, the volatile and unpredictable nature of this case makes it hard to predict whether or not the defense will secure their motion this time around.

As for Mariah The Scientist, here’s what she recently said of Young Thug during her appearance alongside Latto on Angel Reese’s podcast. “So, I be going to court…” she expressed regarding their long-distance relationship. “Sometimes I fall asleep in there. But I just go to [breathe] his air. […] He’s been locked up now for longer than we was in a relationship before he got locked up.” In addition, Mariah also clapped back at people criticizing them online, something that she’s sadly had to do quite often.

Meanwhile, witnesses in the Young Thug and YSL RICO trial are taking all the hate on the chin, such as SlimeLife Shawty. Well, not all of them, as Woody recently apologized to Thug for placing a lot of blame on him when he’s allegedly innocent. We’ll see how the rest of the trial goes, and if the Atlanta creative and Mariah The Scientist will reunite sooner rather than later.

Tee Grizzley’s “Post Traumatic” Is His Most Ambitious Album To Date

Tee Grizzley has deceptive range as an artist. For someone who broke through with a hard-hitting sound, the rapper has proven that he can drop everything from lyrical miracles to sticky R&B melodies. His last few albums were concise in terms of tracklist, but they were also limited in scope. Post Traumatic, on the other hand, is sprawling. At 24 tracks, it is Tee Grizzley’s longest album to date, and it serves as the ideal showcase for all the different sounds and style he can convincingly pull off.

Post Traumatic starts off a bit show, but “Blow for Blow” gets the momentum going. From track three on, Tee Grizzley dishes out sample-based pop-rap on “All I Wanna Do.” He turns around and leans into hard trap tropes on the hooky “More Than Half.” Need more? How about a flirty R&B duet with Tink on “Ride or Die”? Post Traumatic keeps changing out the styles and featured artists while maintaining a cohesion and aesthetic consistency. It’s an impressive balance. Tee Grizzley sounds just as good opposite Future on the off-kilter “Swear to God” as he does Mariah the Scientist on “Situationship.” The length of Post Traumatic can be daunting, but even on shuffle, these various sounds cohere into a great listening experience.

Let us know what you think of this brand new album, in the comments section down below. Additionally, stay tuned to HNHH for the latest news and updates from around the music world. We will continue to keep you informed on all of your favorite artists and their upcoming projects.

Tee Grizzley Reveals Features And Release Date For New Album “Post Traumatic”

Tee Grizzley has got momentum right now. The rapper generated lots of excitement with his new single, “Blow for Blow,” and he’s striking while the iron is hot. He took to social media on September 30 to reveal that his new album, Post Traumatic, is done. Not only that, but the highly-anticipated album will actually be dropping on Friday, October 4. Tee Grizzley went a step further with his announcement by revealing which artists are slated to appear on the album alongside him.

The one feature everybody knows is coming is J. Cole. The Dreamville founder stole the show on Tee Grizzley’s lead single, “Blow for Blow.” His verse is an absolute head spinner, and proves that Grizzley can get lyrical with the absolute best of them. J. Cole and Grizzley even dropped a music video, which you can check out here. The rest of the features on Post Traumatic, however, are just as exciting. Tee went out and snagged collaborations with a varied batch of artists, including G Herbo, YTB Fatt, and Future. There will also be guest appearances from stars like Hunxho, Tink, Fridayy, Baby Grizzley and Mariah the Scientist.

Tee Grizzley’s Album Is Dropping On October 4

That is a lot of talent for one album. Tee Grizzley talked about the collaborative process for his new album during a recent interview with Complex. He told the outlet that he initially linked up with J. Cole when the latter was touring with Drake. He wanted to make sure they found the perfect instrumental to link up, and “Blow for Blow” proved to be it. “Once we found it, bro, I just knew it was the one,” Grizzley recalled. “And I know that Cole is super talented.” Tee Grizzley also talked about the unique experience of working with Future in the studio.

Tee Grizzley told Complex that Future was full of musical ideas, and could seemingly riff for hours on end. This was a direct contrast to the working methodology of most artists that Grizzley had worked with prior. “What surprised me is he don’t run out,” the rapper explained. “A lot of people be like, ‘All right, it’s time to go.’ He could go. Nothing else really surprised me, I knew it was going to be a great experience. I look at Future as one of the greats.” We can’t wait to hear the album, and how Tee Grizzley sounds next to his impressive roster of features.
