All we can hope for, honestly, is that they didn’t try to go too far in really embodying these characters. Jokes aside, it’s fair to say that, in terms of pop culture relevance and a simple adherence to their aesthetics, Chrissy Teigen and John Legend walked away with a W here. Sure, it’s not the most impressive or complex of fits, but anyone who knows The Idol at least somewhat immediately knew what they were doing.
Still, the two have steep competition when it comes to celebrity couples emulating other famous pairings. While John Legend and Chrissy Teigen looked to the small screen for inspiration, Ozzy Osbourne and Sharon Osbourne looked to the world of rap gossip. They dressed up as Kanye West and Bianca Censori, complete with Ozzy covered in all-black in head to toe and Sharon wearing just a pillow. Yeah, just a pillow; we’d say she nailed the vibe.

Inspiration for Halloween costumes can come from many different places. Even for some rappers, they can look around the world of hip-hop for suggestions on where to take their costumes. It’s no surprise then that Jaden Smith used the genre as his inspiration. Smith is notoriously a big fan of rap music himself and has expressed his admiration for artists like Kid Cudi, Kanye West, and Tyler, The Creator.
But when it came to his Halloween look Jaden didn’t choose any of those rappers. Instead, he adopted a look inspired by Playboi Carti, wearing some of the signature face paint the rapper has been sporting in his vamp era. “You Better Be Ready,” he captioned the post which included a series of pictures of his impressive imitation of Carti. In the comments, fans crack jokes about the lack of new material from either rapper. “You and carti got something in common. YOU AINT DROP ANYTHING,” the top comment reads. Fans may be onto something about his lack of releases recently. Jaden’s last project was his CTV3 mixtape which dropped back in 2020. His last studio album was ERYS which preceded it by a year dropping in 2019. While he technically dropped a deluxe edition of the mixtape in 2021, he hasn’t released any new material since then.
Last month when dozens of old videos of Kanye West were leaked online, Jade Smith appeared. In one piece of documentary footage, Kanye plays his collaboration with Lil Pump, “I Love It” for Jaden before the song had been released. He’s also popped up in the news surrounding Jada Pinkett Smith’s recent memoir and various bombshell interviews. For the past three days, it seems like everyone — “everyone” being defined here as rap fans of a certain age and disposition — has been losing their minds over Ice Spice’s Halloween costume and performance at Power 105.1’s Powerhouse concert that night. Dressed as iconic 1930s cartoon character Betty Boop, Ice Spice’s short-cut dress is riling up old-school hip-hop heads as an emblem of the genre’s perceived decline in quality and class.
Which is utter horseshit.
Now, before this turns into yet another of hip-hop culture’s near-constant internecine generation wars, I want to make one thing clear: People are entitled to their opinions and the internet has been custom-designed over the past decade to ensure that everyone has a platform to share those opinions. But come on, man. It is truly an inane outlook to dumb all over a 21-year-old kid for doing what 21-year-old kids have done for at least the past 100 years.
Here’s an example of one of the crotchety, get-off-my-lawn-ass takes that have proliferated online since the performance. Veteran rapper Nikki D posted an Instagram response to the performance — along with a video of it, which… — writing, “You mean to tell me, this is true talent.. the Female genre of hip hop today is the ‘prostitution era’, fight me!!”
Perhaps the Germans have a word for the emotion this sort of thing evokes for me. I am amused, yes, at how silly it is to get so mad over someone’s HALLOWEEN COSTUME (cue Lindsay Lohan’s Mean Girls voiceover explaining the appeal of Halloween to just about anyone under 40), but I am also entirely disheartened to see “my” generation (okay, I’m technically an “old” millennial where Nikki is Gen X) turn into our boomer parents.
I’m old enough to remember when hip-hop — as a whole — was being painted with a broad brush. Devil music, they called it. To hear our elders tell it, rap music was solely responsible for a rise in violent crime, teen pregnancy, and general churlishness in young adults throughout the late ’80s and ’90s, blaming the music for everything from lewd dancing at parties to the Columbine shootings (they had a point about the churlishness, though).
And we pushed back, hard. In fact, so much of hip-hop’s anti-establishment, pro-shock value demeanor of the era (and since) has been a direct response to this tut-tutting from authority figures like Barbara Bush and C. Delores Tucker. If “F*ck The Police” — a righteous response to police brutality — was so bad, then the later gangsta rap only doubled down on the more garish elements of that song to clap back at those pearl-clutching haters.
Likewise, I’m not totally sure that Nikki — and the rest of her fellow over-50 hip-hop heads — remember tuning in at 3pm to watch rappers like Lil Kim and Foxy Brown flaunt their fannies on Rap City, but I sure do (not specifically, but they were on there). Rap heads of a certain age sure supported it back then — what’s changed?
And to be clear, this is not just Ice Spice they do it to. Cardi B, City Girls, Latto, Megan Thee Stallion, Nicki Minaj, and more have all fielded similar complaints, which have only gotten more and more strident in the past few years. Remember the absolute emotional breakdown people had over “WAP?” Snoop Dogg — THEE Snoop Dogg, who made “Ain’t No Fun” at the height of his popularity — insinuated Cardi and Meg had gone too far.
Now, screaming hypocrisy aside, Nikki’s statement did make some decent points. “Where’s her show production?” she wondered. “And for god sake PLEASE STOP singing over those studio vocals it’s not a live show at that point.” But couching valid performance criticism in slut shaming basically overshadows the good advice she’s giving.
For what it’s worth, I’ve been ambivalent about some of the newer rappers’ stage shows myself. The twerk breaks, generally speaking, have been crowd-pleasers, eliciting a pop at pretty much all the Cardi/Latto/Meg shows I’ve been to for work over the past five years. On the other hand, it’s pretty disappointing for me, having grown up watching A Tribe Called Quest, Little Brother, Missy Elliott, and yes, OG sex rappers like Kim and Fox put on true displays of stage presence, choreography, and personality — without backing tracks, mind you.
Would I love to see Ice Spice or Latto make it through an entire verse, let alone a song, without stopping to turn away from the audience (what used to be an onstage no-no) to shake their assets for a quick pop? Sure. But given how quickly today’s stars blow up without the prerequisite grind and slow climb that used to be standard artist development back in the day, I can’t say I blame them. There’s more competition and for an audience that knows what it wants, you give them what they came to see, not necessarily what online hecklers are going to nitpick about after the fact.
But to those online nitpickers: Chill out. Try to remember when you were a young adult being admonished by your elders for being too “fast,” for dressing “like a ho,” or for “showing too much skin.” Think about how bad that felt for you, and whether you want to pass that down. I’ve written extensively about how rap’s double standard hurts the genre as a whole; would you rather contribute to it or help make the genre better with good, empathetic advice, offered without judgment and aimed at helping today’s artists be the best they can be? Hopefully, it’s the latter.

While there were plenty of supportive comments on Ice Spice’s Instagram post, it would appear that Nikki D, the first-ever woman rapper signed to Def Jam, agreed with the anonymous Bible-gifting fan. She posted a video of Ice Spice’s performance alongside the unnecessarily critical caption, “Oh come TF on!!! You mean to tell me, this is true talent.. the Female genre of hip hop today is the ‘prostitution era’, fight me!! Notice the ONLY 2x’s the crowd reacts.. during the familiar ‘munch line’ and when she turns around to show her ass!! She’s one of the top female rappers out at the ‘moment’.. where’s her show production, rehearsal, and for god sake PLEASE STOP singing over those studio vocals it’s not a live show at that point. For those unaware, Betty Boop is an iconic animated character dating created in the 1930s “as an archetype of Jazz Age culture,” according to Smithsonian Magazine. As seen on the official Betty Boop Instagram page, Jasmine Amy Rogers is set to star as Betty Boop in Boop! The Betty Boop Musical on Broadway at CIBC Theatre in Chicago from November 19 to December 24. Let’s all let ourselves imagine a scenario in which Ice Spice serves as Rogers’ standby.
North West has already had a busy Halloween. Last week, she appeared on her first ever magazine cover. She was photographed in stark black and white on the cover of a new edition of i-D. That very same day the first of numerous Halloween costumes she had in store was also shared. Kim took to Instagram to show off her and North’s overwhelmingly plaid tribute to Clueless.
The very next day she showed off yet another Halloween costume. This time she teamed up with her cousin Penelope Disick to show off a Cheetah Girls inspired look. The Halloween looks haven’t been the only ways she’s making waves recently either. She’s also been making some revelations in interviews about her expectations for her future. In one particular moment she claims that she wants both Skims and Yeezy to one day be hers. Fans found it pretty charming that she was already channeling the mogul energy of her parents. This time she went full Disney princess, sporting a baby blue dress and plush frog accessory to dress up as Tiana from The Princess And The Frog. While many online find North West endlessly charming, she did recently do something that had some fans scratching their heads. Well, you see it on the page… Jim Jones’ vampire costume for Halloween isn’t the most traditional, right? Moreover, it looks like he wanted to mix bloodsucker aesthetics with El día de los muertos (Day of the Dead), which is an interesting and fair interpretation. However, fans weren’t too kind to the Dipset mogul and potential reunion leader in the comments section of his Instagram posts. If you’re curious, he wore this fit to the The Haunted Castle party hosted by Bernice Burgos & P-Reala in Huntington, New York on Hallow’s Eve. With a pair of black Air Force 1s, Capo didn’t go full Nosferatu, but he certainly wasn’t getting any Playboi Carti fans to rock with him.
Jokes aside, this is just one of many frankly ridiculous but perhaps over-hated Halloween costumes from celebrities these days. If we’re going by the worst of the worst celeb costume standards, then Jim Jones didn’t fumble the bag here nearly as badly as people think. Regardless, this creates a contrast between the traditional macho street image that he presents and his actually trick-or-treating aesthetics. But it’s Halloween, folks; can’t even the hardest rappers get goofy for some candy?
What’s more is that, if you really want to read too deeply into this and make mountains out of molehills, the New York MC’s homage to Day of the Dead aesthetics make sense considering his philosophy that dissing fallen rappers is “distasteful.” “When you’re talking about a dead person, he’s already defeated,” Jim Jones remarked to Talib Kweli on the People’s Party podcast. “What good does it hold you to talk about that person that’s dead? Especially the way they’re talking about it right now. These were things we were trying to stay far away from. Travis Kelce wasn’t taking any chances with trick-or-treaters this week. According to images obtained by the Daily Mail, Kelce adorned the front of his mansion in Kansas City with caution tape to deter visitors. Meanwhile, a private security guard was posted out front and reportedly people that nobody was home. It’s unclear if Kelce and girlfriend Taylor Swift spent the holiday together after Kelce returned home from a blowout loss in Denver. However, it appears that if they were home, they certainly weren’t looking to garner any attention.
Meanwhile, Kelce’s personal stylist has addressed claims that Kelce’s recent outfits were “inspired” by new beau Taylor Swift. “They are playful, polished and cozy, which Travis always does so well. I don’t have the answer to the [curtain theory],” Danielle Salzedo told Us Weekly. The comments were in relation to a theory amongst Swifties that a pair of crushed velvet pants Kelce sported last month were homage to a 2022 Taylor Swift TikTok series called “Midnight Mayhem with me”. “However, when people authentically connect, they start to have those serendipitous coincidences,” Salzedo noted.

While Kelce didn’t put out candy on Halloween, he was certainly a big fan of people dressing up as him. “It was a Kelce Halloween. So cool,” Kelce said on the podcast he does with his brother. However, Jason Kelce wasn’t so enthused about the idea. “It was pretty creepy watching that many people be us, but it was awesome,” the Eagles center said.
Traylor costumes could be seen all over the country, as well as in the mainstream media. Kelly Ripa and Mark Consuela donned the outfit for Live With Kelly & Mark. Meanwhile, Bradley Cooper dressed up as Kelce while his 6-year-old daughter took inspiration from Swift’s video for “22”. Also embracing the trend was Utah Senator Mitt Romney and his wife Ann. While there’s no word on if Kelce got into costume on Halloween, he did do this week’s New Heights episode dressed as the sun. Jason, however, chose not to dress up for the episode.
Just like every other year, 2023 held plenty of absurdly viral, talked-about, and controversial Halloween costumes in the celebrity world. However, none seemed to garner as much negative or positive attention than Lil Nas X’s choice to dress up as a bloody tampon connected by a string to a huge, fake… well, you know. Moreover, he got a lot of flack for this fit due to its lewd or explicit nature, what many interpreted as a comical treatment of a real health product, or portraying a negative view of women. If you’ve heard the Georgia native’s music in any capacity, you know he’s not about any of that, and he took to Twitter on Wednesday (November 1) to make this clear.
“I been silent for nearly 2 years,” Lil Nas X expressed on the social media platform. Then, he made a bold claim about people not actually being angry about the costume and just overblowing their reaction. “Y’all are not finna pretend to be mad about a tampon costume. Let me at least get new music out first.” Overall, the MONTERO star isn’t buying the backlash coming from prudes, and doesn’t even think he has the space in pop culture right now to warrant such an overreaction.
In more ways than one, he is quite justified in his defense and emotions, particularly about his silence. It’s been a couple of years of relatively low-key movement for Lil Nas X, mostly comprising of shows, promo opportunities, and popping out for other celebrities. Still, it seems like that might change very soon due to very unfortunate circumstances. After someone called in a bomb threat at his new documentary’s premiere, he hit the studio after feeling inspired by it.
Meanwhile, that claim comes from the film Long Live Montero‘s co-director, Carlos López Estrada. Considering this response to the tampon costume, it shouldn’t be all too surprising of a revelation for fans. Hopefully he can let go of some of the clapbacks and stay silently but defiantly focused on himself, his career, and his own dreams and desires. Dwight Howard remains publicly unconcerned about the sexual assault allegations against him. Howard appeared at a Halloween function this week, dressed as Sho’Nuff from The Last Dragon. “Why they mad cause God chose me ? 🫨,” Howard captioned the image on Instagram. However, the image, especially when reposted by outlets such as The Neighborhood Talk, was widely met with mockery. “I think they hate you because you allegedly sexually assaulted someone,” one person argued. Despite this, many of the comments on Howard’s original post were ones of support for the former NBA star.
Howard has been accused of sexually assaulting a man at his home. Howard has formally denied sexually assaulting model Stephen Harper. However, he did not deny inviting Harper to his home for a threesome, which allegedly involved a cross-dresser named Kitty. Furthermore, Harper alleges that he was forced to perform sexual acts on Howard and that Howard performed non-consensual acts on him after he objected to participating in the account. Howard has been sued by Harper but has not been formally charged with a crime.
However, despite his nonchalance, more and more people have come forward to corroborate the pattern of behavior that seemingly led to the alleged assault. “He goes to sex parties and preys on younger men, which is why he originally why he threatened, forced, and tried to intimidate me into signing a NDA,” influencer and author Masin Elije wrote on social media. Furthermore, Elije claimed that they had also been harassed by “Kitty” in 2018, the same cross-dresser that Howard used in an attempted threesome with model Stephen Harper.
Meanwhile, back in July, Howard’s ex Royce Reed spoke on her experiences with the former player. “This man is evil. Y’all fall for it every time. Ask him why he’s telling a 12yo he’s gay bcuz he hadn’t “touched anything” or watching porn with them? Better yet, why it took 4.5 years to fire the nanny that molested 2 of his kids.
