Nikki D Explains Ice Spice Critique, Says She’s “Not The Girl She Remembers”

Nikki D is a pioneer for femcees: she was Def Jam’s first female signee and was among the first rap stars of her class during the late 1980s and early 1990s. As such, it’s no surprise that she has a couple of words of advice and potential hot takes on the new generation. Moreover, fans recently engaged in a lot of heated discussion over the 55-year-old’s comments on Ice Spice. Specifically, they relate to her recent Betty Boop performance, which she posited as an example of a “prostitution era” in hip-hop. Nikki believes we’re currently in that phase, and in an exclusive interview with AllHipHop– of which they have an excerpt available on this topic- she explained why her comments aren’t as combative as they seem.

“When I call it the prostitution era, it’s simply what I saw with the [Ice Spice] performance, right?’ Nikki D began. “I was home chilling sipping on some wine, I saw the the video online and I said “What is this?” Shorty’s dress was literally above her butt. And I was like nothing was out but skin-a**, like this is not the girl that I remember. I felt like she had kind of pushed herself into a place of no return. Now when you out there it’s like walking outside, butt-necked, what else do we have?”

Nikki D Comments On Ice Spice, Megan Thee Stallion & More: Watch Interview Clip

“Well, first thing they say is- and I always like to preference my own self with this when y’all come for me- I know I’m old,” Nikki D continued. “I know I had one big record, I know they don’t do it the way I used to do it anymore. Go ahead. I know all that so again, I just go back to y’all getting butt hurt. Y’all don’t know how to really take a punch or criticism. I tell you what, you would be so lucky to get the age that I am and you would be so lucky to get royalty checks that I got just two weeks ago in the mail 30 years later from that one song. You would be so lucky to see all those things years later, you feel me? Because what I did was timeless. I didn’t do trendy, I did classic.”

“There was a balance,” she concluded. “That’s the problem. so you take this generation now, what’s the balance of of this? Where’s the Lauryn Hills, where’s the MC Lytes? It was inappropriate [then], even though it was happening. Hence the reason why it never hit the forefront. They weren’t major acts. It wasn’t anything we as a people or we as a culture was celebrating… For me, it’s the manufactured Black woman. So when we have this idea of what the Black woman is today, we just look at the images we see. Now, do we need to see Michelle Obama [exclusively]? No! But we need balance and we don’t have it.” Check out more of the interview snippet, the full version of which is coming soon, in the “Via” link down below. What Was Ice Spice’s Halloween Costume?

Ice Spice has been under a microscope for a year-plus, tracing back to the TikTok virality and eventual pop cultural ubiquity of “Munch.” The Bronx, New York rapper’s appearances at the 2023 Met Gala and, most recently, the season 49 premiere of Saturday Night Live were widely applauded. But Ice Spice’s Halloween costume? Not across the board — although it made Uproxx’s “Best Halloween Costumes From Music Artists” list.

Ice Spice performed as Betty Boop during the annual Power 105.1 Powerhouse concert at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey. She posted an Instagram carousel alongside the caption, “guess who ;*,” with the symbols presumably meant to convey a winky, kissing face.

As Ice Spice left the stage, she caught something thrown at her and smacked her bare booty. After the show, Ice Spice posted a photo of a King James Bible to her since-expired Instagram Story, writing, “why a fan gave me a bible after the show [laughing-crying emoji].”

While there were plenty of supportive comments on Ice Spice’s Instagram post, it would appear that Nikki D, the first-ever woman rapper signed to Def Jam, agreed with the anonymous Bible-gifting fan. She posted a video of Ice Spice’s performance alongside the unnecessarily critical caption, “Oh come TF on!!! You mean to tell me, this is true talent.. the Female genre of hip hop today is the ‘prostitution era’, fight me!! Notice the ONLY 2x’s the crowd reacts.. during the familiar ‘munch line’ and when she turns around to show her ass!! She’s one of the top female rappers out at the ‘moment’.. where’s her show production, rehearsal, and for god sake PLEASE STOP singing over those studio vocals it’s not a live show at that point. Can someone have @icespice manager get at me, this girl got 5 minutes left, and y’all gone blow it!!!”

For those unaware, Betty Boop is an iconic animated character dating created in the 1930s “as an archetype of Jazz Age culture,” according to Smithsonian Magazine. As seen on the official Betty Boop Instagram page, Jasmine Amy Rogers is set to star as Betty Boop in Boop! The Betty Boop Musical on Broadway at CIBC Theatre in Chicago from November 19 to December 24. Let’s all let ourselves imagine a scenario in which Ice Spice serves as Rogers’ standby.

Nikki D Blasts Ice Spice For Betty Boop Performance, Call This The “Prostitution Era” Of Female Rap

Ice Spice is an artist who has skyrocketed to fame, very quickly. Overall, this can be difficult for any artist to manage. Of course, you have to work on building a core fanbase that will rock with you no matter what. Music fans are fickle, and if you start to show weakness, the ones who aren’t hardcore stands will immediately jump ship. However, Ice Spice has done a relatively good job of keeping her fans engaged. Moreover, her recent performance dressed as Betty Boop certainly had people talking.

Unfortunately, not everyone saw the performance as a good thing. Nikki D, the first woman ever signed to Def Jam, decided to weigh in on what took place at the Prudential Center. Essentially, she said that this is the “prostitution era” in women’s rap. These were extremely harsh words, although she did not stop there. She noted that Ice Spice raps over her studio vocals, which cannot be considered a real performance. Additionally, she claimed that Spice will likely no longer be famous, very soon.

Ice Spice Gets Bible From Fan After Betty Boop Show, Rubi Rose Thirsts For Her

Ice Spice recently held a pretty lewd and salacious Halloween performance in New Jersey recently, though we think the only real difference between this and other shows is the Betty Boop costume she was wearing. Either way, something about this performance had fans wanting her to reconnect a little more with some more… traditional values. Moreover, the Bronx rapper recently posted a good old King James Bible on her Instagram Story, which a fan gave to her after this concert. Of course, this falls in line with the sometimes misogynist and often controlling view that people have on how femcees should act and what they should promote.

If it wasn’t clear by now, then we don’t know what could convince you that she’s not here for any of that. Also, it’s worth noting that Ice Spice is also still getting used to the massive amount of fame she got in what feels like record time. After all, when you’re still traveling all the time and barely have time to settle down, it can be tough to think about how you want to present yourself and not giving into others’ wishes. So take that Bible with as much or as little energy as you want, Princess Diana; we won’t blame you.

Furthermore, it’s also hard to break away from successful formulas when even one of the Internet’s most popular current muses is lusting after you. Rubi Rose recently took to Twitter to thirst for Ice Spice, tweeting on Sunday (October 29) that she’s “sexy as f**k.” If you know anything about the Kentucky rhymer, it’s that people online shoot these same comments at her all the time. Real recognize real once again, or at least she’s acknowledging that the Like..? hitmaker deserves the confidence and satisfaction she feels.

Rubi Rose Is Head Over Heels For The “Munch” MC

Meanwhile, we’ll see what else these two get up to when it comes to their careers in 2024. They had a pretty big year for different reasons, but ones that they’ll surely capitalize on moving forward. Let’s just hope fans drop the “fix yourself” act and see them for who they truly are: artists, not mannequins. For more news and the latest updates on Rubi Rose and Ice Spice, stick around on HNHH.

Ice Spice Flashes Crowd In Betty Boop Costume’s Itty Bitty Red Dress: Watch

Seeing as Halloween happens to fall in the middle of the week this year, many people are doing their celebrating the weekend before, such as Ice Spice. Even though the 23-year-old was working the stage at Powerhouse NYC in her home state, that didn’t stop her from getting in on the holiday fun. On Saturday (October 29) the East Coast rap diva kept her audience entertained in more ways than one while busting out fan favourites like “Feelin’ U (Munch).”

Her costume of choice was a tribute to the iconic cartoon pin-up character, Betty Boop, which gave us a taste of what Spice would look like with short, black hair. As she performed one of her biggest songs, the video below shows the redhead near-constantly having to adjust her little red dress, which she wore over tights with heels. Each time she manages to pull the fabric now, it almost instantly rides up again, giving us a cheeky view of Spice, to say the least.

Later on during her set, Spice also performed “In Ha Mood,” one of her most popular TikTok songs to date. One thing’s for certain, the way her booty was bouncing certainly had the crowd in moods of their own, though not all of them were positive. Some critics have suggested that Spice would do well to cover up and learn stronger choreography, but she’s never been one to take unsolicited advice.
