Burna Boy And Davido Will Headline Afro Nation’s 2023 Festival In Detroit

Afro Nation is a relatively new festival but it’s already expanding rapidly — just like the genre it aims to highlight. While the first edition took place in Portugal in 2022, Afro Nation just held its first stateside event in Miami ahead of its return to Europe this summer. Ahead of this weekend’s festivities in Miami, Afro Nation has revealed its next expansion. On August 19 and 29, Afro Nation is taking over the former site of the Brewster-Douglass public housing projects in Detroit, Michigan for its third event of the year.

As with its prior show in Miami, AND will be headlined by Burna Boy, although Wizkid will be replaced with Davido, while they’ll be supported by US stars like Ari Lennox, Coi Leray, Latto, and Masego, as well as rising Nigerian stars Kizz Daniel and sibling duo P-Square. And just like prior iterations, the Detroit event will have an Amapiano stage to showcase some of the South African dance genre’s flourishing DJs along with a comedy show, block party, discussions and panels, and something called a Motown special, paying homage to the city’s musical roots.

Tickets are due to go on sale on Friday, June 2. You can get more information at Afro Nation’s Detroit website.

Some artists covered here are Warner Music artists. Uproxx is an independent subsidiary of Warner Music Group.

Coi Leray Confuses Fans With Picture With NBA Trophy

Coi Leray is hard at work promoting and gearing up for her next album COI, but her latest post left many basketball fans confused. Moreover, she posed with an NBA trophy ahead of the Finals, which begin on June 1 pitting the Denver Nuggets against whoever wins between the Boston Celtics and the Miami Heat (the series is currently 3-2 in the Heat’s favor). “Winnnnnerrrrr @nba x (CL),” she captioned her post with a bizarre set of hashtags. “#TeamCeltics #TeamLebron #WNBAForever.” Given that LeBron and the Los Angeles Lakers lost against the Nuggets, many are urging the rap star to catch up with the news.

Jokes aside, she clearly just wants to show her love and support to a legend despite the disappointing loss. Also, as a Boston native herself, it’s no surprise that Coi Leray’s rooting for her team to make a massive comeback, which is already halfway done. If the Celtics reverse a 3-0 deficit against the Heat, it would be a monumental moment. Still, the series is far from over yet, and the comments filled up with many skeptics of the Massachusetts team’s chances of winning.

However, this isn’t the only big hunk of metal that the 26-year-old posed with recently. While performing at Revolution Saturdays at REBEL in Toronto, she brought our a platinum plaque for her single “Players.” The song, which flips the classic hip-hop track “The Message” by Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five, became one of her biggest tracks ever. With other sample-heavy tunes like “Bops” and “Make My Day,” it seems like Coi Leray found a solid recipe for success that fits her style. Despite the confusion that this brought about, the trophy makes one thing clear: right now, no matter the hate, she’s winning.

Still, another post of hers also left fans with a head-scratcher, which was when she revealed the tracklist and features for her upcoming album. Not only are David Guetta and Saucy Santana in the mix, but also Lola Brooke, Skillibeng, Giggs, and the one and only James Brown. Sure, there are some prominent rap names in there, but others have fans wondering what this project will sound like. We’ll have to wait and see how the hitmaker capitalizes on her hype. Coi Leray Teases Upcoming Project With Sultry New Look On Instagram

With her second album COI arriving on June 23, Coi Leray is in heavy promo mode for her next moves. As such, she’s probably very busy shooting visuals, taking press deals, and apparently debuting new looks like the one she just teased. Moreover, the rapper posted an Instagram Reel of her getting ready for what seems like a shoot, whether for a music video or something else entirely. Foregoing her usual long locks, she apparently rocked a short haircut with curls as her team put some hairspray on. Looking sultrily at the camera as her single “Bops” played in the background, she said that there are “good things coming” very soon.

Of course, this is far from the first time that she teased some sort of visual for that song in particular. Just last weekend, Coi Leray and a couple of her friends put on a twerk show for the camera while “Bops” played, yet it’s unclear if it’ll be a part of the music video or if she just built some hype. Regardless, the 26-year-old keeps leveling up and making waves that set the stage for her next moves. We’re only a month away from COI‘s release, but we’re sure that there will be much more to cover from her in that meantime.

Coi Leray’s New Look

However, a lot of fans were left a little confused with the album’s tracklist, which the Boston native revealed on Monday (May 22). Furthermore, a lot of that confusion stems from the features, which don’t include the array of U.S. rappers and hitmakers that appeared on Coi Leray’s debut album Trendsetter. Rather, COI will bring on David Guetta, Saucy Santana, Giggs, Lola Brooke, Skillibeng, and none other than James Brown, somehow. All this points to more genre diversity, but singles like “Players” and the teased “Make My Day” (with Guetta) hint towards heavy sample use, plus a more electronic and dance-inspired direction.

No matter what you think of these teases, it’s clear that the “My Body” MC set herself up for a big splash. Whether she capitalized on the hype remains to be seen, but we’re sure that she’ll continue to make waves no matter what. Until then, we have to find out whether she debuts any other new looks to usher in another era in her career. For the latest news and updates on Coi Leray, stay up to date on HNHH.

Coi Leray Reveals Sophomore Album Tracklist, Features Leave Fans Confused

On her debut album, Trendsetter, Coi Leray shocked fans with the selection of major artists who appeared on her tracklist. Among them were Nicki Minaj (“Blick Blick”), Lil Durk (“No More Parties [Remix]”), and H.E.R. (“Overthinking”). The project’s first-week sales were relatively low, but regardless, many industry icons were just to publicly congratulate the Massachusetts native on a job well done. In the time since then, Leray has been refining her image while teasing us with a handful of singles throughout 2023. After dropping “Players,” “Bops,” and “My Body,” she finally felt ready to announce the release date of her sophomore album, COI, earlier this month.

Along with the topless cover art, the 26-year-old teased yet another title last week, “Make My Day.” It samples “Pump Up The Jam,” which has been earning her some backlash on social media as critics suggest Leray relies too heavily on sampling throwback hits to ensure virality. She was quick to clap back at them on Twitter and has since continued to move forward with her album rollout, sharing the final tracklist for COI on Monday (May 22).

The to-be-released in June effort comes with 15 songs, beginning with “Bitch Girl” and closing out with “Come And Go.” While there’s definitely some intrigue generated by Leray’s announcement post, for the most part, many seem surprised by the artists she’s opted to work with this time around. “Wtf are these features omg 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂,” one person reacted to the list, which includes names like James Brown, Saucy Santana, Lola Brooke, and David Guetta.

“Y’all smoking if you think this not a crazy line-up 😂😂🔥🔥🔥,” someone else chimed in, remaining optimistic about Leray’s sophomore album. Which feature on COI are you most excited to hear? Let us know in the comments, and tap back in with HNHH later for more music/pop culture news updates.

Coi Leray Teases Twerk-Filled “Bops” Music Video Coming Soon

Coi Leray season is only just beginning, but already, the 25-year-old has impressed us with her plans for the future. Earlier this week, she confirmed that her follow-up to last year’s Trendsetter album is officially on the way, following the arrival of singles like “Players,” “My Body,” and “Bops” earlier this year. The project is titled COI, and while we don’t know who she’ll be collaborating with this time around, we did see her channel Lil’ Kim in what appears to be the cover photo for the upcoming release.

Upon confirming that the album will arrive on June 23, Leray also previewed another title from the tracklist, “Make My Day.” On this, she samples a throwback classic, “Pump Up The Jam,” which has earned her some backlash online. Regardless of what the critics have to say, the Boston baddie seems more confident than ever in the body of work she’s about to put out. On Friday (May 19), Coi took some time to answer fan questions on Twitter, many of which were about accompanying visuals for her latest singles.

Coi Leray Gives an Update on “Bops” Visual

“I love this! So excited! Now where is the [music video] for ‘Bops,’ Miss Leray?” one user asked in response to the “TWINNEM” hitmaker’s album announcement. Rather than just verbally promising that it’s on the way, Coi provided a photo of her on set, proving that there’s sure to be plenty of twerking (as she’s become known for) as she bends over in a pair of booty shorts for the camera to capture.

Apart from preparing to drop her sophomore project in little more than a month, the fashionista also took to the stage at Montreal’s Metro Metro festival on Friday afternoon, at which time the crowd was happily jumping along to some of her biggest hits. Are you looking forward to checking out Coi Leray’s “Bops” music video? Let us know in the comments, and tap back in later for more hip-hop/pop culture news updates.

Coi Leray Shrugs Off Backlash For “Pump Up The Jam” Sample

On May 19, Coi Leray shared a brief snippet of her upcoming song “Make My Day”, which appear on her new album, COI. The song, and the snippet, include Leray sampling of the Technotronic classic, “Pump Up The Jam”. The 1989 hit, which peaked at #2 on the Billboard Hot 100, also provides the name for Leray’s hit.

However, Leray’s teaser was not well received. “They need to clean the beginning of the track up,” wrote one user. “It’s actually not that bad but the beginning is horrible it sounds like your [sic] doing karaoke and you can’t keep up with the verse on the screen,” added another. Meanwhile, on Twitter, one user went for the jugular. “Coi leray is going to be the reason people go back to original production or just small referencing. she’s over saturating the market with these shameless samples and attempts to climb the charts.” Leray has now responded to the backlash.

Leray Hits Back At Haters

In response to the criticism, Leray took to Twitter. “Bops doesn’t have a sample 🤪🤪🤪🤪🤪 keep streaming BOPS OUT NOW 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥 no more parties didn’t have a sample , Twinnem no sample , big purr no sample… but when I do a sample I BODYYYYY THAT MF !!!! 🤪🤪🤪🤪🤪🤪🤪😽😽😽😽🤷🏽‍♀️🤷🏽‍♀️🤷🏽‍♀️.” However, despite Leray’s confidence, the reaction across social media was overwhelmingly negative. Interestingly, Leray’s biggest success so far has actually come from a song featuring a sample.

Leray broke into the Billboard Top 10 for the first time earlier this year when “Players” peaked at #9. The song featured a sample from another classic song. This time, it was 1982’s “The Message” from Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five. In fact, Grandmaster Flash personally endorsed Leray’s usage of the song. “When I got a call saying this girl wanted to resurrect the beat of a song from my past – I wanted to learn more,” he wrote on Instagram. “Then when I spoke with & met @coileray, I TOTALLY got it.” What do you think about Leray’s sample of “Pump Up The Jam”? Are you excited for COI? Let us know in the comments.

Coi Leray Confirms Sophomore Album, “COI,” With Topless Photos, Also Teases “Make My Day” Single

With her debut album, Trendsetter, Coi Leray made a solid impression last year. Across 20 tracks, she connected with the likes of Nicki Minaj, NAV, G Herbo, and Lil Durk, among many more, while also showing range throughout solo efforts such as “Heartbreak Kid” and “Lonely Fans.” After its first week out, the Boston baddie’s numbers came in at 11.5K album equivalent units sold, which is far lower than some anticipated considering the superstar collaborators she had the pleasure of working with.

Regardless, Leray has soldiered on, continuing to share exciting new singles and serve up scantily clad-looks in the months since. After teasing fans with a trio of titles so far this year – “Players,” “My Body,” and “Bops,” – the 26-year-old has, more recently, been hinting at the impending arrival of her sophomore project. She shared a pantsless photo dump on Instagram earlier this week while providing fans with an album update, and today (May 19), the fashionista confirmed exactly when it will arrive.

COI is Coming

Much like her debut, what appears to be the cover art shows Leray posing in a promiscuous position, hiding her bare chest with a massive chain and her hand. The few pieces of clothing she is wearing are all bright blue in colour, and her shiny black hair is styled in a blunt bob. “Introducing ‘COI,’ my second album. Dropping June 23,” the “Anxiety” artist confirmed in her caption, causing plenty of excitement to begin buzzing among fans.

Along with the big news, she also gave the world an early preview of what she says is “one of [her] favourite songs” from the upcoming project. As Billboard notes, it’s sure to be an internet hit, as it samples 1989’s “Pump up the Jam” by Technotronic, following her recent trend of paying tribute to old classics.
