Lil Yachty Drops Trippy Skit Ahead Of New Album

Lil Yachty just dropped a skit titled “Department of Mental Tranquility” on social media to promote his upcoming album, Let’s Start Here. Moreover, the skit contains him entering a mysterious office of some kind, with wacky characters, jarring cinematography, and eerie narration. Overall, it seems like a brash and expressive statement from one of hip-hop’s most curious creatives.

“At the end of this hallway is the edge of oblivion,” Yachty opens with narration. He walks into an office titled the “Department of Mental Tranquility” or DMT. Maybe this will be the psychedelic and trippy indie album we never knew we needed from Yachty. Nevertheless, he continues. “Whilst the man you are watching may not know it yet, this moment will mark the first step on the journey of the rest of his life.

“A man arrives at the precipice,” another version of Yachty says in the video. “He simply asks a question.” As Lil Boat arrives at the sweltering office, he’s greeted by an enthusiastic woman at the front desk. After asking if this is where he gets treatment, she asks him a barrage of personal and sometimes funny questions. She even asks Boat if he’s sexually active, which he affirms despite recent IRL comments.

Overall, the video has a kind of jittery and overwhelmed feeling, as Yachty’s eyes dart between trippy decorations, sweaty patrons, and the front desk lady’s exhaustive questions. Finally, he shuts all the madness out and simply asks for them to get on with it.

Then, Yachty walks towards “Room 10” and enters a light-filled room. Afterwards, the door closes, and “Let’s Start Here” pops up on screen. In fact, the Atlanta native even teased us with a taste of the upcoming album via a music snippet.

Moreover, it sounds quite psychedelic, definitely more rock or indie-inspired, and very unlike his recent catalog. However, considering his collaborations with the likes of Tame Impala and his previous teases, this seems like an exciting new direction.

Baby Stone Gorillas Become “Block Benders” On New Single

Baby Stone Gorillas returned this week with a new single, “Block Benders.” Moreover, the breezy track follows their previous single “WOP,” which carried a lot of hunger and energy. These new tracks will appear on their forthcoming mixtape, The Military, set to drop on February 10th via Park Money Records/EMPIRE.

While they rose as fresh faces in West Coast hip-hop, don’t think that their hustle just got started. Back in March of 2022, they released the 23-track BABYST5XNE GORILLAS with plenty of features and highlights. Moreover, their chemistry and penchant for smooth flows makes them a really fun and engaging listen.

On this new single, the Los Angeles collective trades bars over some piano-led harmonies. However, there’s much more melodic elements in this track to discover. In addition to the resonant piano chords, a classic G-funk wailing synth line joins the chorus. Also, there are some atmospheric vocal samples that hang comfortably in the background. Moreover, the beat is simple and succinct enough to keep listeners in the mood, but not distract them from the flows.

Even though the Gorillas are making waves of their own, they’ve received a lot of external support in the industry. For example, OVO Sound Radio played their songs often, which meant a nice little promotional boost for the group. Still, a lot of that radio play came a year ago, so expectations are set for an impactful return. Given the group’s varied talent and collection of voices, such an outcome wouldn’t be surprising.

The Kid LAROI just dropped his newest single, “I Can’t Go Back To The Way It Was.” Moreover, it follows previous tracks like “Thousand Miles,” though it’s unclear whether this most recent single will appear on his next album. Given that it’s subtitled “(Intro),” some fans believe that this single will open up the Australian artist’s next move.

However, the 19-year-old stated that this new song is not the first single off the new album. Furthermore, his fanbase interpreted this message a couple different ways. First, there’s the possibility that “Thousand Miles” will appear on the new album, reportedly titled THE FIRST TIME. Then, some fans assumed that it just wouldn’t appear on the album at all.

Still, perhaps the most interesting theory relates to one of his unreleased demos, “Love Again,” which made rounds on social media. Given the announcement that the previously leaked song will drop next Friday (January 27), many believe that the leak was the true “first single.” Even with all these theories floating around, “The Way It Was” is enough to keep fans hungry for even more.

Moreover, this new single is quite short, clocking in at just one minute and 37 seconds. Despite its brevity, the track feels grandiose, dramatic, and like it’s heralding in something greater. After all, it is an “intro.” Over choral harmonies, a stark drum beat, and watery synth pads, LAROI floats with ease. However, lyrically, he dives into his past, his forward momentum, and what it took to get him to this point.

Pries Releases Passionate New Single, “Stoop Kid”

Denver artist Pries is back with a new single “Stoop Kid,” ahead of his upcoming album GameCast. The track is as impassioned as it is peaceful, with rapid flows contrasting an airy instrumental. Moreover, it reflects his sharpened skills, which he showcased on the 20-track album Beautifully Depressed in February of 2021.

Furthermore, “Stoop Kid” sees the rapper and singer in a motivated but slightly melancholy state of mind. That reflective quality comes through thanks to the instrumental, which features some high-pitched and atmospheric vocal samples. With a soft acoustic guitar riffing in the background, a dreamless version of this track would sound like absolute bliss. Moreover, the Denver MC’s sung harmonies further into the track cap the song off with a lot of emotion.

However, there are some elements in the track that contrast the breezy melodies in the track. For one, there’s the sharp and busy drum pattern that runs through “Stoop Kid.” It might feel slightly jarring at first, but it keeps the track energized and dynamic. Moreover, it sets up a compelling performance from Pries to spit some interesting bars.

While the track’s instrumental is hopeful, Pries’ verses go through a lot of his hardships. Moreover, he discusses hustling in multiple ways. J. Cole Drops New Song “Procrastination (Broke)” On Producer’s YouTube Channel

If you’re a type-beat producer hustling on YouTube, then one of the greatest rappers right now wants you to keep that hustle going. Surprisingly, J. Cole just dropped a new song called “Procrastination (Broke)” exclusively on YouTube. Moreover, it’s on producer Bvtman’s channel, who made a J. Cole type beat that the veteran MC found inspiration in. According to J. Cole’s message to the producer, he found the beat when looking for inspiration.

“On a day when I couldn’t find much motivation,” the “my life” rapper wrote, “I was looking for anything to inspire me. Out of curiosity, I typed in ‘J. Cole type beat’ into YouTube. Yours was the first I saw. I pressed play, focused, and wrote this.”

Furthermore, the track is laidback, woozy, yet introspective and pristine in a way J. Cole does best. Still, over looping and reverb-heavy guitars, a breezy drum pattern injects a lot of soul into the song. Unsurprisingly, Cole flows with ease over the calm instrumental and delivers a slightly melancholy, but ultimately inspirational verse. While he sounds downtrodden, he wants to inspire others to keep searching for their truth through music.

“This song should live on your channel and serve as a thank you to you and every producer out there cooking up and sharing their work with the world,” he wrote to Batman. “It’s a million artists out there right now just like me, hungry and searching every day for something to spark a word, a melody, a hook, a verse, a punchline, a way to vent, or a way to CUT THROUGH.

“This is some s**t that would normally stay in the vault,” he continued, “but I don’t want to hold onto the music like that no more. This is for you and whoever else need to hear it. God bless bro and keep doing what you do!”

Also, the producer was very thankful to the North Carolina MC in the video’s description.

Reuben Vincent Stays “Trickin’” On New Song With Domani

Reuben Vincent just released “Trickin’” with Domani, a soulful, downtrodden, yet beautifully produced and performed single. Moreover, it keeps up his collaborations with 9th Wonder through his Jamla Records label. The last we heard from them on the site was the single “High Noon” with Rapsody and Murs, and it looks like Vincent is prepping for a big new step.

Furthermore, the Charlotte rapper is dropping his Jamla debut, Love Is War, sometime this January. While he’s only 22 years old, he’s already making a name for himself as a thoughtful and skilled writer. In a press statement, Vincent explained this track’s themes of relationship struggles in the current generation.

“‘Trickin” is a tale of three stories,” he stated. “The song amplifies the wrongs in dating culture today for my generation and how it plays out in different scenarios. The first verse is something I lived. I was involved with a girl in a situationship, and once she caught feelings I became detached and acknowledge my imperfections. 

“In the second verse,” he continued, “I speak from the perspective of a guy ‘tricking’ on a girl, thinking he has the upper hand when ultimately it’s the other way around. I’ve lived the first experience first-hand and witnessed the second one happen to many other people. After I recorded my verses, I drove down to Atlanta the next day and played it for Domani and he immediately hopped on it; the rest is history.

“All im’a say is make sure you remember when, and where you were when you first heard this song because that question WILL be asked in the next ten years,” featured guest Domani added.  “Trickin” is Storytelling + Vulnerable-Ignorance= Art.”

Clay “Krucial” Perry III Delivers “Switches” With NLE Choppa

Clay “Krucial” Perry III just tapped NLE Choppa for “Switches,” a woozy and relatively low-key cut from two Memphis MCs. While Krucial is still forging his way in the rap game, the support from a Memphis star is surely useful. Moreover, last we heard of Krucial on HNHH was his project If We Must Die, which featured the likes of Trippie Redd and Blocboy JB.

Even though it’s been a while since that tape, Krucial put in some work last year. Furthermore, along with a few singles, he delivered his Clay EP. Also, this newest single came with the announcement of his upcoming mixtape, Wake Me Up When It’s Over. His team announced its February 2nd release and said it would be on Tay Keith’s Drumatize (DOA) label. Given the features, it seems like a Memphis round-up, as the names included Choppa, Blocboy, Lil Migo, Kevo Muney, and Lil Beezy.

On this newest track, Krucial and Choppa’s talent solidified excitement for this new album. Moreover, their flows are fast and emphatic, the autotune doesn’t overwhelm the verses, and their writing seems sharp and measured. Moreover, there are some very dramatic vocal samples used that give the track a slightly epic feel. Even if it doesn’t reinvent the Memphis wheel, it certainly is another example of the region’s overwhelming talent and chemistry between its artists.

Homeboy Sandman Starts Year With New Song “Eighth Day Of Christmas”

Homeboy Sandman blessed fans with a single every day in the holiday season, with his latest being “Eighth Day of Christmas.” Moreover, he began on December 25th, and his end goal is his new album, 12 Days of Christmas & Día de los Reyes, set to drop on Three Kings Day (January 6th). As such, each day leading up to the 6th brought us a new single off the album from Sandman.

While a track a day can seem daunting, the Queens MC wrote varied and high-quality tracks for each day. Some of his earlier singles were woozier, more energetic, and laced with spontaneous drums. However, “Eighth Day of Christmas” displayed Homeboy Sandman in a drumless, more reflective state. The beat is based on a smooth, glamorous, and lush sample, with many different instruments elevating the track.

For example, there’s the subtle chunks of electric guitar that give the track a funky feel. Also, the keys go from low bass notes to high-pitched tones with ease, which add some dynamism to the track. There’s not a lot of percussion here, with a light hi-hat and rimshot used as sparse elements. Finally, the deep bass is what grounds the track, balancing out the track’s melodic elements.

Meanwhile, the 42-year-old delivers a subtly emphatic performance, despite the track’s low-key and dreamy atmosphere. All of the beat’s elements come through very densely, but Homeboy balanced them with a confident and raspy flow. While there are a few abstract bars here and there, there are also powerfully simple proclamations against traditional success and not getting his due credit.

Furthermore, the flow is consistent, but he spit a lot of internal rhyme schemes and cheeky references. Everything makes for a great performance to ring 2023 in, consistent with his impressive output from last year. For example, he assisted the Oakland-based Oakstop Alliance in their debut album, Royalty Summit.

Boldy James & Cuns Mark Their “Foot Prints”

As one of the premier lyricists working today, this Detroit MC’s prolific output makes his Wednesday drops just as fresh as all the new Friday releases. Boldy James released a new single this week with Italian producer Cuns titled “Foot Prints.” The smooth boom-bap track is the lead single off their upcoming collaborative album, Be That As It May. Moreover, the album drops on December 14th. Moreover, it follows the rapper’s last 2022 project, Mr. Ten08 with producer Futurewave.

What’s more is that this project will mark Boldy’s fifth collaborative effort in a year. Super Tecmo Bo with The Alchemist released last December, and is still in heavy rotation for many. Also, he dropped three albums that are considered some of the best hip-hop of the year. There was Killing Nothing with Real Bad Man, Fair Exchange No Robbery with Nicholas Craven, and the aforementioned Mr. Ten08. With so much heat in such a short amount of time, Boldy has established himself as one of the top dogs of the moment. It’s rare to hear a bad verse from him, and his status is respected from the underground to the legends.

Such consistency is evident on this track as well, with classic flows, clever wordplay, and vivid narrations and proclamations. Sure, he told a street narrative not unlike those penned on his critically acclaimed The Price of Tea in China. However, Boldy is able to make those tales feel fresh and immediate with every new track. He dominates through sharp lines like “Bust down could barely brace it on the wrist that I cooked with” and “Broke dance the whole satchel got some blow to hit harder than shrapnel.”

On the production end, Cuns displays a creative command of sampling, balancing his vocal chops with another guitar track and a chunky drum loop. All these elements come in and out of the track, they all have moments to shine, and the beat feels balanced as a result. Be That As It May is sure to be a varied project, production-wise. The Detroit MC spit comfortably on this track, even if it’s a tad more straightforward than the minimal or even electronic-inspired production he’s also ridden.
