Lizzo Clarifies She’s Not Quitting Music, Calls It “The Joy Of My Life”

Lizzo has clarified that she’s not quitting music despite her recent headline-grabbing post on Instagram. Instead, she intended to imply that she’s done giving negative comments about her on the internet any attention. In the post, she had been venting about dealing with bullying on social media and exclaimed “I QUIT” at the end in all caps.

“When I say I quit, I mean quit giving any negative energy attention,” she explained. “What I’m not gonna quit is the joy of my life, which is making music, which is connecting the people… In no way, shape, or form am I the only person who is experiencing that negative voice that seems to be louder than the positive. If I can just send one person the inspiration or motivation to stand up for themselves and say they quit letting negative people win, negative comments win, then I’ve done even more than I could have hoped for.”

In her original statement, she wrote that she’s “tired of putting up with being dragged by everyone in my life and on the internet” and feels “like the world doesn’t want me in it.” She ended the lengthy message: “I QUIT.” In response, plenty of celebrities came forward with messages of support, including Latto, who recalled the “Truth Hurts” singer helping her through adversity in her career. “The ppl need you Lizzo,” she commented on Lizzo’s post. “I remember U made me keep going when I wanted to quit before. UR soul is SO pure f.ck these people that don’t know you! Team Lizzo 4L.”

Attorney Ron Zambrano, who is representing the dancers that are suing Lizzo, says the “Truth Hurts” singer’s message about quitting music is simply “another outburst” and that she’s just “seeking attention.” She made headlines, last week, for claiming to retire from music due to the constant bullying she faces online. The statement was met with a mixture of criticism and support.

“It’s a joke that Lizzo would say she is being bullied by the internet when she should instead be taking an honest look at herself,” Zambrano wrote in the statement obtained by Billboard. “Her latest post is just another outburst seeking attention and trying to deflect from her own failings as she continues to blame everyone else for the predicament she is in. Lizzo’s legal and public relations strategy is a failure, so she is desperately trying to play the victim. She has thrown these childish tantrums before. No one actually believes she is quitting music. But she should quit sexually harassing, shaming and bullying her employees and finally accept responsibility for her actions.” He further argued that toxic behavior is ruining the entertainment industry and cited Diddy and Dan Schneider as examples.

A spokesperson for Lizzo addressed the comments in a statement also provided to Billboard. “With nearly half his case dismissed, 18 independent witnesses siding with Lizzo and no settlement on the way to get him his tasty contingency fee, Ron has started making wild personal attacks that have absolutely nothing to do with the clients who he is supposedly representing. We would humbly recommend that Ron start representing his clients and stop representing just himself,” it reads.

In doing so, Banks argued that Lizzo invited the very trolling that caused her to fall out of love with the music industry. The comment comes after she previously apologized for taking aim at Lizzo over the years.

“I took back my criticism of you because it definitely clicked in my mind that I definitely wasn’t getting my point about the ways in which insidious people in corporate culture where positioning you to push demeaning initiatives, but sis your handle is ‘lizzo be eating.’ …. You’ve definitely given the public license to laugh at and with you by twerking at the Burger King counter and bathing in a tub of skittles,” Banks wrote. “Self-deprecation was certainly the aesthetic you chose to introduce yourself with. During a recent episode of It Is What It Is, the Jacksonville native reflected on his decision to step back from the rap game in the late 90s when he was at his peak. He went an unexpected route, opting to go to college and eventually becoming an ordained minister.

During the show, he was asked whether or not he still believes he made the right decision to quit when he did. He explained that while it may not have made sense to many at the time, looking back he can see that it worked out in his favor. Mase went on to list various misfortunes that other Bad Boy artists ran into, calling it his “destiny” to have taken a step back when he did.

Erica’s creation cost about $17,000 and includes around three carats of diamonds. “I created a lady’s Super Bowl ring,” Moe said. “Aaron Donald’s wife was the first person to receive it for the Super Bowl the Rams won.”
