Polo G has put some distance between himself and his last album, 2021’s Hall Of Fame, and as he prepares to release his first new album in three years with Hood Poet, the Chicago rapper takes one last look in the rearview with its first single, “Sorrys & Ferraris.” While he reflects on when he “used to chase a bag on that curb,” he celebrates the fact that his “life is like a party now.”

Naturally, the video sees Polo commandeer a fleet of the titular sports cars, which race down the roadway as scenes from Polo’s party life play out. In addition to burning rubber on the asphalt, he’s seen beaches, birthdays, private jets, and more. There’s also a good look at his unique iPhone chain. The Arrad-directed video is simple but effective, as befits the rapper’s low-key personality.

Although Hood Poet was initially scheduled for a September release last year, Polo held off on dropping the album. “I’mma be postponing my album drop ’til further notice,” he explained in a message to fans on social media. “Just getting back on track from a minor setback… it’ll be worth the wait. I promise.” And while he characterized the cause of the delay as a “minor setback,” if it was related at all to his arrest last year on kidnapping, robbery, and assault charges, it doesn’t sound like that setback was so minor. However, it looks like things are back on track, as he told TMZ he’s looking forward to an August release for Hood Poet.

The search party to track Polo G’s whereabouts can officially be called off. Firstly, the “Barely Holdin’ On” rapper was spotted attending Uproxx’s 2024 Grammys The Labels Brunch, in partnership with Verve Records. However, there are still a few lingering questions from supporters.

Why was Polo G’s album Hood Poet delayed? When will Hood Poet officially drop? What’s next for Polo G? Well, thanks to Polo G’s latest post on Instagram, the public now knows the latter. According to the upload, this Friday, February 16, Polo G is back to business as usual with a new single titled “Sorrys & Ferraris.”

“Everybody say they sorrys now [black heart emoji],” he wrote. “S&F [out on] 2/16.”

It is unclear if this upcoming record will restart Polo G’s album rollout schedule. This song could just be a loosie to hold his famished fans, to which they will gladly nibble. But after some digging, it appears that the expected release date has been updated on Apple Music’s pre-save page for Hood Poet. The new date under the highly anticipated album is August 2. Still, Polo G hasn’t seemed to confirm this on any of his social media pages.

Why Was Polo G’s ‘Hood Poet’ Delayed?

“Barely Holdin’ On” rapper Polo G has quickly become one of the leaders of rap’s new school. Since the release of his debut album, Die A Legend, in 2019, the Chicago native hasn’t deviated from his annual tradition of dropping a new project for fans. However, that could change this year. So, why is Polo G’s forthcoming album, Hood Poet, being delayed?

On August 12, Polo G took to his official Instagram page to announce the album (which at the time was scheduled for Friday, September 15) via a new diamond necklace with accent lavender stones, an elaborate pendant, and other tricked-out personal modifications made by IceBox Diamonds & Watches. However, by September 9, he stunned fans when he revealed that the project was no longer dropping.

Yesterday (September 14), in an exchange on X (formerly Twitter), Polo G gave supporters more insight into why he ultimately decided to delay the album. When asked outright by a follower, Polo G replied, “[I] was going through some sh*t, gang. We are still pushing [forward] though. You know that.”

Although Polo G did not state specifics, the sh*t he’s referring to could be tied to his recent arrest (August 23) on alleged kidnapping, robbery, and assault with a deadly weapon charges. If Polo G is tied up in a legal battle of this magnitude, it would greatly hinder his ability to tour and travel for press.

Following the incident, Polo G’s lawyer, Bradford Cohen, released a statement regarding his arrest. Read the complete statement below.

“The incident surrounded someone staying in Polo’s home and not Polo directly. The officers have detained Polo to ‘verify’ that he is not a convicted felon, as they assert a firearm was found in the home. It is widely known that Polo is not a convicted felon and never was a convicted felon. I personally got all his charges in Miami dismissed when he was, in our opinion, wrongfully arrested and charged. They have refused to allow us access to our client, which is also an illegal and unethical practice, and someone will have to answer for these new wrongful actions. We are hopeful the LAPD will handle this matter with tact and transparency.”

Although his lawyer has since issued a statement declaring his innocence, supporters are still concerned that the long-anticipated project will be shelved as he deals with the incident.

“Wanted to tap back in and let y’all know I’mma be postponing my album drop ’til further notice… just getting back on track from a minor setback,” Polo G wrote. “I’ll be updating y’all and dropping new music soon. [I know] y’all been waiting on me, and I appreciate the ones who show genuine support, but it’ll be worth the wait. I promise.”

However, according to the projected date listed on Apple Music, Hood Poet is set to hit streaming platforms before the year’s end.

Polo G was handcuffed outside his Los Angeles-area home as offers executed a search warrant. During the warrant’s execution, Polo G and others inside the home were ordered out of the house individually.

According to TMZ, the warrant was in connection to a robbery, leading to four people being arrested. Reps for Polo G state he was not the subject of the investigation. “We are hopeful the LAPD will handle this matter with tact and transparency,” a rep said.

An additional update states Polo G was detained in case he harbored a fugitive. That said person is Polo G’s bother, Tauren, known as Trench Baby.

“Polo is being held to under the guise that the police department needs to double check that he is not a convicted felon as there was a purported firearm found in the home,” Polo G’s attorney Bradford Cohen said. “He is not and never was a convicted felon. Any precious charges he had I got dismissed and it’s all public record. They are also denying myself and my California law partner Zoey Aron access to him while he is being illegally detained.”

Polo G Says He’s Considering Retirement After Upcoming Album “Hood Poet”

Polo G is without a doubt one of the most successful and definitive rap stars of the 2020s decade so far. However, ahead of the upcoming release of his new album, Hood Poet, the 24-year-old hinted to fans that he might be ready to wrap things up. Moreover, he took to Twitter to express why he could retire after this project, and to thank fans who stood by him throughout his career. “Honestly, after my HOOD POET album I’m considering retiring from music. So I appreciate everybody ridin for me 10 fold,” he remarked. “This rap s**t got so watered down it ain’t no fun in it no more.”

Of course, this is sad news for his fans, but also just an idea and a possible option that he’s weighing alongside many others. After all, retirement is difficult even for those who want it. It wouldn’t be surprising at all if the Chicago MC continues to release singles, features, and the like, as well as promo opportunities, touring, and many more things that go into being an artist. Hood Poet (which stands for “He Overcame Obstacles During Pain Or Emotional Trauma”) is his potential swan song, and follows up a long wait from his last project, 2021’s Hall Of Fame. Hopefully it’s a solid and compelling set of tracks regardless of Polo G’s future. With the lead single “Barely Holdin’ On,” fans of the “No Time Wasted” spitter have a solid indication of the greatness to expect.

Meanwhile, Polo already cemented himself as a key part of not just the Chicago drill scene, but also the contemporary hip-hop game as a whole. Polo G is back, and this time, he’s putting his pain on display, while sending love to those who are hurting. On his new single, “Barely Holdin’ On,” Polo delivers a tear-jerking ballad over an emotional piano instrumental, as he sings of his hopes to live long and make an impact while he’s still with us.

“Barely holdin’ on / this life gets scary as it goes on / Burdens while we carry on / I ain’t perfect, spare me if I’m wrong / Hope my secrets get buried when I’m gone / starin’ at the writin’ on these headstones / They keep on tryna tear me, but I’m strong / that’s what you wanted to tell me all along,” he sings on the song’s chorus.

Polo G Announced His Fourth Album ‘Hood Poet’ And Celebrated With A Brand New Chain

Polo G‘s last album, Hall of Fame, was released in June of 2021 (and reissued as Hall of Fame 2.0 in December) so it’d be understandable if fans of the Chicago rapper were getting a little antsy waiting for a follow-up. Fortunately for them, it looks like they’ll be getting one sooner than later, as he subtly announced with the launch of a YouTube livestream revealing the album’s title and release date. It’s called Hood Poet and is due one month from this writing on September 15.

Polo celebrated the announcement with the purchase of a new chain from Icebox bearing a massive heart-shaped pendant bearing the album’s title alongside a goat (as in GOAT — Greatest Of All Time — the title of his second album), a microphone, and a hand holding a pen. Naturally, the whole thing is absolutely drenched in diamonds. In addition to watching the creation of a massive mural featuring a similar design, the livestream has also been periodically previewing some of the songs from the album, with a countdown to each preview so you can check in. As of publication, the next one is a little under 90 minutes away.
