The Weeknd Didn’t Think He Had The Right Look For R&B

The Weeknd is one of the biggest stars in the world and has been for quite some time. He is also well known for making some of the darkest, sexiest music ever. If you need an example, all you have to do is look at his latest collaboration with Future, “Double Paradise.” Can you imagine a time where Abel didn’t think he had the right look for R&B? Some may find it difficult to do. However, Abel has opened up in a new chat with Interview Magazine about how he used to think he didn’t fit the mold of what R&B was supposed to be.

“I wanted to be very calculated about how I wanted people to see me or hear my music,” The Weeknd said. “The initial reason I did that was I didn’t think I was marketable when I was younger, especially for R&B. I didn’t think I had the right look.” Of course, when he says “the right look,” Abel is referring to how sexy R&B was expected to be back in the day. “The R&B look was very sexual… Obviously there were a lot of singers that didn’t have the conventional R&B look, but for me it was more of a personal thing. I liked getting an unbiased reaction from my music.”

The Weeknd On Building a Career On Mystique

It is difficult to comment on whether or not the public opinion of The Weeknd’s music is unbiased. There are many who find him extremely attractive. However, more than anything, Abel has been praised for his skill. It seems as though he got exactly what he wanted. “People got to just judge me for the art, for the music I was putting out,” he said. “So it worked in my favor, and then it became a gimmick. No one else was doing it at the time, so it was a breath of fresh air.”

Abel is, of course, referring to the mystery behind his image in the early days of his career. It was something that became a huge part of who he was as an artist at the time. “The mythology and the mystique of it ended up becoming as interesting as the music,” he continued. “I tried to ride that wave as much as I could. In the internet age it’s impossible, but I got a few years in.” Though he may not be the mystery he once was, The Weeknd continues to keep fans on their toes. Soon, he will be appearing in an HBO series called The Idol, for which he is creating the soundtrack. What do you think about Abel’s new interview? Let us know in the comments below.

The Weeknd Shares Ethereal New Snippet

It’s The Weeknd season, apparently, as he shared even more new music with his fans via social media. Moreover, this comes after the Canadian superstar released the single “Double Fantasy” with Future just last Friday (April 21). On this new snippet, Abel Tesfaye seems to play with the ethereal, dramatic, and synth-heavy style of pop and R&B that he became the world’s biggest star through. The autotune sounds a little more prominent on it than usual, which actually makes for a cool effect in the song’s dreamy atmosphere. However, the song might not appear as a solo release, but rather as part of the next Mike Dean album dropping this week, which Abel said he’s co-executive producing.

Still, the tease’s quality should come as no surprise, as he’s arguably at his artistic peak. In fact, that’s a sentiment that The Weeknd seems to agree with. Recently, his interview with Interview Magazine saw him dive deep into his most recent moves. One of those is the upcoming release of his HBO show “The Idol,” the soundtrack for which will feature the aforementioned “Double Fantasy.” During that conversation, the 33-year-old reflected on his provocative nature as an artist. Also, he spoke on his inspirations and how he’s excited to manifest them in musical form.

The Weeknd Is Keeping The Heat Up

“I’ve been inspired by The Wall and Purple Rain and when Bowie was doing it,” The Weeknd revealed. “But even films like Shaft, the music is literally telling the story of the film. But I want to take it to the next level. I want to challenge myself and I feel like, as a musician, I’m the best I’ve ever been. There’s a whole album,” he remarked about “The Idol”‘s soundtrack, letting fans know his TV endeavors won’t cut into his art. “I’m not shying away from making music. It’s just adding another element to my already crowded schedule.”

At another point in the interview, he addressed the controversies that followed him in his career. “I’ve been judged since the beginning,” the “Faith” singer expressed. “My stuff’s always kind of been provocative. As an artist, you have to know that you can’t please everybody. You have to accept that it comes with the job.” Check out the snippet above and return to HNHH for the latest news on The Weeknd.

The Weeknd Co-Executive Produced Mike Dean’s New Album ‘4:23’ Which Drops This Week

The Weeknd has been quite busy recently preparing for the debut of his HBO series The Idol, but he still had the time to help a friend on a project of their own. The Weeknd informed fans via Twitter that not only is his frequent collaborator Mike Dean putting out an album this week but that The Weeknd co-executive produced it. The album is called 4:23 and drops this Friday, April 28.

Mike Dean, who has produced for Beyoncé, Chloe, Drake, Kanye West, Kid Cudi, Jay-Z, Lana Del Rey, Madonna, Selena Gomez, and Travis Scott, is four albums into his solo discography, which he surprisingly only kicked off three years ago with 4:20, released on April 20, 2020. He’s released a project around the same time each year since with 4:23 being his fourth. Dean has yet to share further details about the album, although he retweeted The Weeknd and cross-posted his announcement to Instagram.

Meanwhile, The Weeknd recently released his own first new music since last year’s Dawn FM in the form of the Future collaboration “Double Fantasy.” The new track is set to appear on the soundtrack for The Idol, which The Weeknd has said was inspired by both Pink Floyd and Prince.

4:23 is due 4/28.

The Weeknd Clapped Back At Fans Who Think He Hates ‘Dawn FM’ And Didn’t Give It As Much Attention As ‘After Hours’

“As an artist, you have to know that you can’t please everybody,” The Weeknd recently said. He was speaking to Interview Magazine about The Idol, his soon-to-debut HBO drama that was at the center of a troubling Rolling Stone report in March. But the sentiment extends to his music, too.

On Sunday, April 23, someone tweeted to The Weeknd, “ABEL NOTICE DAWN FM DON’T ACT LIKE IT DIDN’T HAPPEN.” He tweeted back, “What does this mean?”

Someone else chimed in with a tweet, “I feel like the Dawn FM era didn’t have its time to shine the way it deserved.”

“Really? I don’t know if I agree… maybe elaborate?” The Weeknd responded.

He also had worthy reactions to someone claiming “you hate Dawn FM” (“??? Not true! One of my favorites hands down”) and another person claiming he “did a little more for After Hours than what you did for Dawn FM”:

“It had the same amount of music video videos as After Hours,” The Weeknd tweeted separately to yet another person convinced they know how The Weeknd feels about his discography better than he does. “Maybe one less? A universe. Dawn FM experience short film, stadium tour(still going), live film and live album… I don’t think it needs more.. it’s perfect.”

After Hours arrived in 2020, housing the all-timer “Blinding Lights” and “Save Your Tears.” Dawn FM followed suit in January 2022.

The argument is moot, really. The Weeknd began a new era on Friday, April 21, by releasing “Double Fantasy” featuring Future from the companion album to The Idol.

Grimes Is Actually Encouraging Use Of Her Voice In AI Songs In Response To The Viral Drake And The Weeknd AI Track

In recent days, a lot of attention has been paid to AI-generated music, specifically a song that used copies of Drake and The Weeknd’s voices. The track got removed from streaming platforms, but not before Meek Mill listened to it a bunch of times. Grimes, ever one to embrace new technologies, has some thoughts about this and about the use of AI clones of her own voice.

Yesterday (April 23), Grimes took to Twitter to share a screenshot of an article about the Drake/Weeknd AI song. She wrote, “I’ll split 50% royalties on any successful AI generated song that uses my voice. Same deal as I would with any artist i collab with. Feel free to use my voice without penalty. I have no label and no legal bindings.” She added in another tweet, “I think it’s cool to be fused w a machine and I like the idea of open sourcing all art and killing copyright.”

That led to some good follow-up questions. One Twitter user asked, “would the title of such a song credit you as a featured artist, or how would you prefer it?” Grimes replied, “Sure – anything anyone wants. Im just curious what even happens and interested in being a Guinea pig.” Somebody else wondered, “Hey can you pls tell everyone that they need to upload to elf.tech [Grimes’ website] in order to get approval from Media Empire?” She responded, “I feel like we shouldn’t force approvals – but rather work out publishing with stuff that’s super popular. That seems most efficient? We cud use elf tech for it tho – but I think we’ll notice if a grimes song goes viral.”

Grimes also noted that she’s working on AI-ifying her voice herself, tweeting, “We’re making a program that should simulate my voice well but we could also upload stems and samples for ppl to train their own.” Somebody asked about how that endeavor is going and Grimes replied, “we were p far along last I checked. I sorta just spur of the moment decided to do this lol but we were making a sim of my voice for our own plans and they were almost done.”

Finneas seems to be on board with Grimes’ vision: He shared her original post and added, “So lit.”

Meek Mill is a Warner Music artist. Uproxx is an independent subsidiary of Warner Music Group.

The Weeknd & Future Create A “Double Fantasy” On Our “R&B Season” Playlist

Our weekly Fire Emoji update had an undoubtedly healthy list of songs for your listening pleasure yesterday, but this Sunday (April 23), our R&B Season round-up is on the short and sweet side. Last time we checked in, we brought you fresh, must-hear tracks from the likes of Amir Obe, PARTYNEXTDOOR, Jorja Smith, Yung Bleu and Chris Brown. This time, it’s The Weeknd and Future leading the way on our list, thanks to their collaboration on “Double Fantasy.” It’s set to appear in the former’s upcoming HBO series, The Idol.

The Canadian has been teasing the joint effort for some time now, playing it on Instagram Live ahead of his appearance during Metro Boomin’s first Coachella set. Even after just hearing a teaser, some social media users felt confident in predicting that the single may be the “most toxic song of the century” thanks to the notorious reputations of its creators. It officially arrived on streamers this New Music Friday (April 21), leaving fans eagerly awaiting what else The Weeknd has in store for his show’s accompanying album later this year.

HNHH R&B Season Playlist

Bree Runway and Khalid also made waves with their first collaboration, “Be The One.” It marks the female artist’s 2023 debut, following 2022’s WHOA, WHAT A BLUR! EP in December. As for the American Teen hitmaker, we previously heard him on “Softest Touch,” “The Hard Way,” with PNAU, and “We Go Down Together” alongside Dove Cameron.

Our final R&B Season pick of the day comes from another Canadian favourite, Roy Woods. The song is called “Young Boy Problems,” and even earned the artist a co-sign from Drake, who he worked with on “Drama” in the earlier days of his career. Stream this weekend’s full update exclusively on Spotify below. Afterward, let us know if we missed any new arrivals in the comments. The Weeknd Has Safety Scare During Coachella Weekend 1

Coachella 2023 has been a bit of a mess. This has primarily revolved around Frank Ocean’s sudden departure due to a leg injury. That has left Coachella scrabbling to replace him and find a use for the giant ice rink they had built for Ocean’s set. It’s a prominent blemish on the festival’s usually spotless resume.

The festival’s second weekend kicked off on Friday night, headlined by a hyped closing set from Bad Bunny. Weekend’s 2 Saturday lineup is anchored by the likes of BLACKPINK, Charli XCX, and Eric Prydz. However, people are once again talking about Weekend 1 thanks to new footage concerning The Weeknd. While not as dramatic as the Frank Ocean debacle, it does raise some questions about safety at Coachella.

The Weeknd Dodges Pyrotechnics

The Weeknd is not performing at Coachella 2023. However, the artist made a surprise during Friday’s Metro Boomin set. Boomin and The Weeknd linked up so that The Weeknd could drop his verse from Future’s 2016 hit “Low Life”. However, as The Weeknd encouraged the crowd to sing along, a large pyrotechnic display ignited near the performer. The Weeknd, surprised by the sudden burst of flame, took a visible step back and could be heard saying “whoooo”. However, the Canadian performer was unharmed and finished out the performance in style. Metro Boomin was closing out the Sahara stage at the time. He holds the same set in Weekend 2.

Overshadowed by the Ocean drama, the moment resurfaced April 21, when an account tweeted out the clip with the caption, “Be careful Abel”. The clip spread yet further when The Weeknd himself retweeted it, adding in a quote tweet “ALMOST COOKED ME.” The Weeknd’s tweet has received nearly 51,000 likes and nearly 800 comments. There is no word if The Weeknd will be returning to the festival for Weekend 2. However, if he does, he will be sure to keep a closer out for big columns of fire. But this does raise an important question – what’s going on at Coachella? This was the potential for a second major injury to a second major star in the same weekend. Regardless, Coachella runs until Sunday, April 23.
