Russ Interpolates A 2000’s R&B Bop With “Best Friend” Featuring Melii

Russ is one of many rappers who has gone unconscious in 2024. The longtime New Jersey rapper and singer has been rattling off single after single like nobody’s business. Since the month of January, the 31-year-old has put forth eight tracks. Throughout the year, he has been going introspective and talking a lot about loving, broken, and causal relationships.

“Best Friend” is one of those shallow love cuts from Russ, but it seems that he wants to move into a more serious situation. “Don’t look no farther (Don’t) / I’m here to cater to you / ‘Cause I’ll be your lover (Yeah, I’ll be your lover) / I’ll be your best friend (Yeah, come here).” Then, the feature, which is provided by Melii, tells the story from her side. “Baby, tryna be my number uno / The perfect duo, I can tell.”

If that chorus that we highlighted sounds somewhat familiar, that is because it is an interpolation of 2000’s throwback. Russ and his fleet of producers, which includes Boi-1da, are looking to modernize the Baby Bash and Akon track “Baby, I’m Back.” That song dropped back on the former’s 2005 record Super Saucy. Memphis Producer Hitkidd Recruits Key Glock & Doe Boy For “NOTT”

Memphis, Tennessee is one of the hottest spots for hip-hop artists without question right now. Whether its rappers or producers, the pool of talent is large. Hitkidd is one of the cities fastest rising beatmakers right now and today he is working with Key Glock and Doe Boy on “NOTT.” He is not a stranger to these two trap veterans, as Hitkidd had a hand in Glockoma 2 and OH REALLY. The last time we spoke about the 29-year-old was when he collaborated with host of his Memphis female contemporaries for Renegade. It was released in early December of last year and featured the likes of GloRilla, K Carbon, Gloss Up, Slimeroni, and more.

For Key Glock, he is just continuing to stay on his hot streak of singles. Over the last couple of months, he has remained as consistent as anyone, with songs like “The Greatest,” “F*** Around & Find Out,” the mutliple “Let’s Go” remixes, and more. For Doe Boy, he has also been on quite the heater himself. This effort follows up on “Shoulda Coulda Woulda,” “HUH,” and “Say It To My Face.”

YG Claims There’s A Lot Of “Weird” Rappers On “Just Re’d Up 3” Single

YG has had some fans excited over the last few months with a new project that is coming soon. That would happen to be Just Re’d Up 3, the third entry in the series. The Compton, California veteran is continuing the saga of projects 11 years after the second one released in 2013. Its origins trace back to 2011, though. However, for number three, YG is not labeling it as a mixtape, rather a studio album. YG formally announced the record across his social media platforms a few days ago, revealing the cover in progress and estimated drop date. Now, YG is back with its third single “Weird.”

This track follows up on the late April release “KNOCKA,” as well as the 2022 lead single “Miss My Dawgs” with Lil Wayne. YG has been straying away from the G-funk and West Coast hip-hop sounds and opting for more straight-line trap cuts. “KNOCKA” had some elements of his OG style, though, especially with the sample flip. But “Weird” focuses on his older sound, and its sounds like something that would have landed on My Krazy Life.

On this track, YG is claiming that a lot of people, including unnamed rappers are oddballs. Quavo Returns To His Regularly Scheduled Programming With “Clear The Smoke”

After a pretty bloody battle with Chris Brown, Quavo is looking to get back on track with “Clear the Smoke.” The former Migo went shot for shot with R&B singer after Breezy rekindled the flame on “Freak.” “Okay, now f***in’ my old b****es ain’t gon’ make us equal / Sippin’ that 1942 ’cause I don’t do no Cuervo / Freak b****, she like Casamigos, not the Migos.” The 11:11 (Deluxe) cut prompted Quavo to fire back on “Tender.” However, it did not stop there, as Brown would then retaliate with “Weakest Link.” Finally, that would be followed up by “Over H*es & B****es.”

Now, with the dust settling on their feud, Quavo can now refocus on the streak he has been on. He has been really keeping the momentum up since he released Rocket Power last September, his tribute to Takeoff and sophomore solo LP. Huncho has worked alongside artists such as Rich The Kid, Destroy Lonely, Kanye West and Ty Dolla $ign, as well as Chief Keef. However, “Clear the Smoke” sees him riding solo.

Quavo seems to be working on a more ethereal and spacey sound, compared to the straight-forward trap bangers of the past. Drake Shouts Out Octavian After Singer Samples “Chicago Freestyle”

Drake loves to co-sign international artists. He’s always singing along to their music, or tagging them on social media. Some of these co-signs lead to collabs, others merely boost the profile of the artist who’s mentioned. Octavian falls in the latter camp. The French-British rapper has been getting love from the Toronto superstar since 2018, when the latter was seen rapping to his song at a Golden Globes party. Octavian has continued to grind since then, but it appears as though Drake is still a fan.

Drake posted a clip from Octavian’s new single, “I See You,” on his May 23 Instagram Stories. The song has been getting attention online, and once you hear it, you’ll understand why Drizzy likes it. “I See You” contains a recognizable sample of Drake’s 2020 song “Chicago Freestyle.” The sample is looped under the verses, but the Giveon chorus from the original really comes through on Octavian’s hook. It’s a cool choice for a sample, as it’s developed a reputation for being one of Drake’s most underrated songs.

Octavian took advantage of the shout-out and posted a screenshot of Drake’s IG Story on his own account. He simply tagged him @champagnepapi with a sword and black heart emoji. Octavian lucked out in terms of timing, as Drake has more eyes on him than ever these days. The world was waiting to see how the 6 God would respond to losing the Kendrick Lamar battle. The answer, it appears, is to act like it doesn’t bother him. Drake popped up at a WNBA game the week of May 19. He also dropped his first new verse since the K. Dot battle ended.

In an attempt to make light of the battle, Drake appeared on the Sexxy Red single “U My Everything.” He rapped over the “BBL Drizzy” beat that went viral, and flipped the meaning of Metro Boomin’s version to suggest that he can link girls up with a BBL if they want one. The new single is going to do impressive numbers. That said, it wasn’t received as well as Drake might have hoped.

Zacari Continues To Shine On Sultry New Single “Lonewolf Still”

Zacari is the secret weapon of Top Dawg Entertainment. He always crushes his guest verses, and sometimes he lends soulfulness to album cuts he’s not even credited on. His best known feature is still Kendrick Lamar’s “LOVE,” but the singer has shined equally bright on albums by Ab-Soul and TDE as a whole (Black Panther soundtrack). Zacari has yet to drop a solo release, though, and the desire to hear one grows increasingly higher with each new single he puts out. “Lonewolf Still” keeps this desire sky high.

“Lonewolf Still” is Zacari’s second single of 2024. He went the off-kilter acoustic route on “Ocean,” but “Lonewolf Still” sees him veer back into his sultry, R&B sweet spot. It works. The production is spacey in ways we previously haven’t heard from Zacari tracks. It’s reminiscent of blackbear, or perhaps even the weirder side of Post Malone. It’s a welcome change, given that some of Zacari’s earlier singles suffered from nondescript beat selection. “Lonewolf Still” brings all of the atmosphere one could hope for, given the evocative title and album cover.

Zacari Embraces A Darker, More Textured Sound

The lyrics follow suit. “Thunderstorms let me know God is watching over. Ain’t afraid of death as much as I’m afraid of comfort,” Zacari croons. “Leave me ‘lone, you know I been plottin’ on a come up. And I don’t wanna see that girl unless she wanna comе f*ck.” It’s melodramatic on a certain level, but it sounds epic given the textured musical accompaniment. The hope is that “Lonewolf Still” serves as the introduction to Zacari’s debut album. He’s upped his solo game since the late 2010s, and it sounds like’s ready to step off the bench.

Central Cee & Lil Baby Go “BAND4BAND” On Aggressive Drill Banger

You CAN’T RUSH GREATNESS ever. That is certainly the motto that Central Cee has taken up ever since the release of 23 back in 2022. The Shepard’s Bush, London drill rapper has billed himself as one of the UK’s biggest voices over the last few years. He has done so by creating catchy bangers like “Doja” and “Sprinter.” Additionally, you can attribute his success due to his crossovers with the likes of J. Cole, Drake, The Kid LAROI, PinkPantheress, and more.

While singles and features are great, fans, and us at HNHH alike, are still waiting on a new project from Cench. That could be happening sometime this year, with CAN’T RUSH GREATNESS being the speculated title. There is no confirmed information that it will happen this year, but we feel the chance is strong. Cee has been quite active in 2024, dropping his take on R&B with “I Will,” as well as a “CC FREESTYLE,” which has recently been removed from his YouTube page.

Drake Gets Petty, Raps Over “BBL DRIZZY” Beat On New Sexyy Red Collab “U My Everything”

Drake and Sexyy Red are back at it again. The controversial “two bad b****es” are furthering their chemistry and relationship on a new cut from In Sexyy We Trust. This a follow-up mixtape to the St. Louis native’s 2023 breakthrough, Hood Hottest Princess. It comes at an awkward time for each artist, as she has been tied into some disses from the Drake and Kendrick Lamar beef. But Red has not let those distractions get to her, as she is arguably at the peak of her powers.

“Get It Sexyy” has quickly become an anthem for this year and the number of features she has provided, especially for Chief Keef, have been a big deal. Now, she can “U My Everything” to that growing list of accomplishments. She managed to get Drake first before anyone else could since the beef, as he seems to be ready to work on new endeavors. These two have created some interesting tracks together, to say the say the least. But this one may take the cake.

Both play into the absurdity of the record, with Sexyy Red purposefully singing poorly at the start. It is quite hilarious, and it makes a callback to the Rolling Loud performance from this year. Then, there’s Drake who plays into the “BBL DRIZZY” accusations halfway through his verse. “Me and the surgeon got history I changed a lot of girls’ lives for real / They need a new body, they hittin’ me, ayy / BBL Drizzy, they want a new body, they ask me for it.” The wild part about this is when these bars drop, the Tay Keith beat switches up to the Metro Boomin diss instrumental “BBL DRIZZY BPM 150.mp3.” It certainly a petty thing for him to do, but it is Drizzy’s MO.

PinkPantheress Samples Selena On Bubbly New Single “Turn It Up”

PinkPantheress is back. The bedroom pop superstar took some time off after the release of her debut album, Heaven Knows, but she’s ready for another rollout. She teased a snippet of her new single, “Turn It Up,” on her TikTok, and fans immediately went nuts for its airy, melodic beat. Well, Pantheress has now dropped the full version on streaming, and it did not disappoint. “Turn It Up,” the presumed lead single to her next album, is everything fans could want and more.

The first thing that jumps out about “Turn It Up” is the instrumental. It has the classic, genre-melding sound that PinkPantheress fans are used to, but it also makes use of an iconic 90s sample. The sample in question is “Dreaming of You” by Selena. The Queen of Tejano is rarely used in modern pop music, but the way the melody get chopped up here, maybe she should. “Turn It Up” recycles the opening chords of “Dreaming of You,” but speeds them up to give them a propulsive, lo-fi feel. Pantheress is famous for her eclectic musical taste, and this flip is probably one of the best examples of this taste working in tandem with her knack for catchy hooks.

PinkPantheress Continues To Perfect Her Unique Sound

The lyrics are typical PinkPantheress fodder. She sings about a rocky relationship with a man, and the desire to make things go right, even if only for the moment. The singer’s words are not really meant to be taken out of the context of the song. They’re just meant to sound good. To nobody’s surprise, they do.

“I got thе time with you, that’s what I want tonight. Boy, just show your devotion,” she sings. “Make yoursеlf go through the motions. I hate going out, but you just got the promotion.” If you’re not a fan of PinkPantheress already, this song won’t change your mind. If you love her, though, “Turn It Up” will get lots of spin this summer.

Drake Raps Over “BBL Drizzy” Beat On New Sexxy Red Single

Drake had to take a step back after the Kendrick Lamar battle. Most people agree that he lost after the release of Lamar’s number one single “Not Like Us,” and the viral “BBL Drizzy” challenge. The latter was the name of an instrumental that another Drake enemy, Metro Boomin, cooked up. Not the best stretch of the Toronto rapper’s career. That being said, he’s back, and flipping his L’s into a W. At least, trying to. Drake dropped a guest verse on the new Sexxy Red single “U My Everything,” and decided to rap over the “BBL Drizzy” instrumental himself.

The bulk of the song has an original beat. Sexxy Red does her usual thing over a monstrous Tay Keith production, but when things switch to Drake, the beat switches with him. Metro Boomin originally made the beat to mock Drake for getting cosmetic surgery done, but Drake flips the meaning of the sample to assert that he can give BBL’s to any woman he chooses. “Me and the surgeon got history, I changed a lot of girls lives for real,” he raps. “They need a new body, they hittin’ me, ayy. BBL Drizzy, they want a new body, they ask me for it. The last one drunk, he did it for free ’cause I sent over so many.”

Drake Flips The Original Meaning Of “BBL Drizzy”

Fans will be combing through Drake’s verse to discover subliminals aimed at Metro and K. Dot, but there aren’t any. The Toronto rapper is strictly in hitmaker mode here, crafting a catchy duet with Sexxy Red. It worked when they teamed up for “Rich Baby Daddy,” so why not do it again? It does, however, play into a couple of Kendrick Lamar’s lyrical jabs. On “Euphoria,” Dot clowned Drake for “seeing two bad b*tches” whenever he stands next to Sexxy Red. He also advised the 6 God to focus on making hits, instead of trying to battle. “I like Drake with the melodies, I don’t like Drake when he act tough,” he adds.

The decision to return to hitmaking should come as no surprise to fans. Drake announced that he was going on vacation, and focusing on “summer vibes” after the release of “Not Like Us.” He may decide to pick up the battle against Lamar later on, but as of now, he’s content to crank out collabs with the likes of Sexxy Red and Lil Yachty. It’ll be interesting to see how “U My Everything” fares on the charts, given that the last Drake and Red collab peaked at number 11 on the Billboard Hot 100. The “BBL Drizzy” sample is going to help.
