J Cole Fans Think He’s Redeemed Himself With New Tems Collab “Free Fall”

Today, Tems unleashed her eagerly anticipated debut album, Born In the Wild. So far, fans are impressed, and praising the Nigerian songstress for her work on social media. The 18-track project includes two features from the likes of Asake and J Cole. Cole’s feature in particular, “Free Fall,” is getting a ton of attention online.

Countless users are commending him for his verse, calling it just what he needed to recover from a rough month. Of course, his guest spot on the track comes after he teamed up with Cash Cobain for “Grippy” in May. The song earned him a great deal of clowning for his NSFW and arguably cringe bars, which left some theorizing that he was on his way out.

J Cole Joins Tems On “Free Fall”

“Free Fall” has many fans singing a different tune, however, and demanding that he tap into this side of his artistry more moving forward. “This Tems and J Cole collaboration is going to sweep the Grammys,” one fan writes on Twitter/X. “Tems Free fall ft J.cole has to be one of the best features that has been released so far this year,” someone else says.

Others are even crediting Tems for saving Cole’s career by breaking the “curse” left behind by his last collab. Unsurprisingly, there are also a few select critics arguing that Cole’s verse is “boring.” Most agree, however, that it fits in well with the overall tone of the song.

Social Media Reacts To New Tems & J. Cole Collab

Rick Ross Claims He’s Applied For A Zoo License To Buy Exotic Animals

Rick Ross is at the heart of many of the of the strangest stories in recent rap history. His tendency to film nearly everything he does has heightened his eccentricities and led fans to pay close attention every time he comes up. They were rewarded for that just earlier this week when he was roasted online for a strange video where he tries one of Bun B’s vegan burgers. Now he’s shared yet another video making some attention grabbing claims about a license he just applied for. In the middle of an extensive series of recent Instagram stories he addresses his fans directly.

He revealed to them that he’s applied for a zoo license. Before fans could even ask why, he answered their questions, or at least tried to. He claimed that he plans on ordering giraffes and elephants once he gets the license. In the comments fans try and make sense of his claims. “Drake done made this man a zookeeper. 😂😆” one fan jokes, conjuring Ross’ swift exit from his beef with Drake earlier this year. Other fans come at it with a more logical explanation. “If you don’t understand this is a tax break . Every animal etc is more deducible . A “zoo” get a lot of write offs so . When you see rich ppl getting certain animals it’s a tax break for the long run” one fan claims. “He’s doing this for taxes purposes” another agrees. Check out the newest strange video from Ross below.

Rick Ross Wants Giraffes And Elephants

Earlier this week, Rick Ross faced backlash from fans for his most recent car show. They claimed that the show was overrun with fans and disorganized as a result. He didn’t seem too phased by the backlash, brushing it off when he shared a response.

What do you think of Rick Ross claiming that he’s applying for a zoo license so he can buy giraffes and elephants? Do you agree with some of the fans in his comments that it’s likely a move for tax purposes? Let us know in the comment section below.

YSL Lil Woody To Give Forced Testimony In Young Thug Trial

The Young Thug and YSL trial is moving along at quite the slow pace, but little by little, more pieces are falling into place. Moreover, YSL Lil Woody recently spoke to Judge Ural Glanville in the courtroom, and the judge told him that the court granted him immunity and thus expects him to testify. If Woody doesn’t testify, then Glanville clarified that he would hold him in contempt and subject him to jail time, and by the end of the exchange, Woody seemingly agreed to testify. It’s also important to note that he was explicitly informed that prosecutors could not use his testimony against him.

Furthermore, this is far from the only controversy surrounding cooperation that YSL Lil Woody has faced concerning the Young Thug and YSL trial. In fact, he even has something relating to the collective’s feud with YFN Lucci and that crew, as a video leaked last year of an interrogation that investigators conducted with Woody. This even led to a mistrial request, but that didn’t lead to much other than folks debating and discussing this development. Since then, his name didn’t come up much in court proceedings, but we’ll see whether this testimony is any different.

YSL Lil Woody Considers Testifying In Young Thug Trial: Watch

Meanwhile, this comes amid a strangely light time in the Young Thug and YSL trial, at least when it comes to the headlines and narratives currently surrounding it. For example, the courtroom couldn’t help but break out in laughter as a witness called Thugger’s “Lifestyle” with Rich Homie Quan and others a “banger.” Out of everything said during this harrowing and frustratingly long legal process, that might be the most true thing to come out of a participant’s mouth. Jokes aside, it’s at least been heartening to see Jeffery and others balance out the hardship with a smile, hard work, appreciative messages, or other shows of perseverance.

Still, folks continue to advocate for Young Thug and YSL’s freedom on their behalf, a possibility we seem no closer to witnessing. No matter what happens next in this court case, it’s clear that there will be a lot of left-over conversation surrounding cooperation and testimonies. After all, Gunna already caused a storm with his decision, one that still has repercussions and implications for his career today. We’ll see if this discourse evolves any more than it already has.

BIA Shines Over The City In Her Pulsating ‘Lights Out’ Video With JID

BIA clearly has a pretty good rapport with the Dreamville Records team. Back in 2022, she and J. Cole teamed up on her song “London,” with both rappers coming out of the collab with complimentary comments about each other. Now, she’s linked up with Atlanta-bred Dreamville standout JID fo the pulsating, inspirational track “Lights Out.”

The overall vibe of the track is very 2007, with an anthemic beat/chorus structure that finds BIA extolling her perseverance. “When the light’s out / Still can see me shining, I’m a lighthouse,” she croons. Meanwhile, in her verse, she cites her prior collab with Jermaine, boasting, “First rap bitch you know that went back and forth with Cole.” On the second verse, JID comes in hot — as usual — opening with a callback to an ATL classic from T.I. and quickly launches into his signature tongue-twister flow.

The song appears on the Bad Boys: Ride Or Die soundtrack (one of two from BIA) alongside tracks from 21 Lil Harold, Becky G, Black Eyed Peas, Flo Milli, ScarLip, Sean Paul, and of course, Will Smith. The soundtrack is out now via Epic Records, and Bad Boys: Ride Or Die is out now in theaters.

The Most Anticipated Hip-Hop Tours Of Summer 2024

Summer’s here, which means a whole slew of summer tours from your favorite artists. From Childish Gambino to That Mexican OT, there’s a tour for practically any hip-hop fan’s taste. There’s even a little old-school flavor, courtesy of Missy Elliott (sorry, guys, but it’s true — Missy’s old school now).

Here are the most anticipated hip-hop tours of summer 2024.

Childish Gambino — The New World Tour

Donald Glover’s most recent work as Childish Gambino hasn’t fallen under the umbrella of hip-hop in the strictest sense, but considering the bulk of his early work consisted of beats and rhymes, there’s a pretty strong chance that he’ll dip into those catalog hits. Not to mention, he has a string of featured artists he can call on such as Chance The Rapper and Young Nudy.

You can find dates and ticketing info here.

French Montana — Gotta See It To Believe It Tour

Fresh off the release of his new mixtape, Mac & Cheese 5, the Bronx rapper has tapped fellow New Yorkers Fabolous and Fivio Foreign for his Gotta See It To Believe It Tour. Kicking off in August and running through the month, it’s a short tour that will stick mainly to the regions closest to his home base.

You can find dates and ticketing info here.

Future & Metro Boomin — We Trust You Tour

Their albums We Don’t Trust You and We Still Don’t Trust You may have turned the hip-hop world on its ears, but it seems they aren’t finished just yet. Although the tour is promoting their new albums, they have enough collaborations to make it worth the price of admission even without them.

You can find dates and ticketing info here.

Ken Carson — Chaos World Tour

Playboi Carti fans took a blow earlier this year with the cancelation of his Antagonist Tour. But fans of his label, Opium, still get the chance to catch at least one of the artists billed to open on that tour in Ken Carson’s Chaos World Tour. And hey, maybe Carti himself will put in an appearance.

You can find dates and ticketing info here.

Megan Thee Stallion — Hot Girl Summer Tour

Yes, I know. Megan’s tour has been in full swing for the past two weeks. But the bulk of the tour is set for the month of June… and hey, hey, look around. Dates coming up include her hometown show in Houston, Los Angeles, and Las Vegas. Turn up with Meg and her opener GloRilla before she heads to the UK and Europe in July.

You can find dates and ticketing info here.

Missy Elliott — Out Of This World Tour

My personal most-anticipated tour of the summer is Missy Elliott’s Out Of This World Tour with Busta Rhymes. The Rock And Roll Hall of Famer hasn’t played shows for a few years (which is an understatement), but she’s proven that she’s a consummate performer who doesn’t have a speck of rust on her.

You can find dates and ticketing info here.

Nicki Minaj — Pink Friday 2

Nicki Minaj just announced the second North American leg of the ongoing tour for her new album, which picks up in September — still technically summer — and runs well into the fall after she returns from Europe.

You can find dates and ticketing info here.

Rob49 & Skilla Baby — Vultures Eat The Most Tour

Rob49 was on last year’s XXL Freshman cover, and Skilla Baby is more or less a shoo-in for this year’s list (if XXL doesn’t drop the ball in a truly epic way). That makes their joint tour this summer (which technically kicked off over the weekend) the best chance to see them early.

You can find dates and ticketing info here.

That Mexican OT — Live In Concert

June and July give breakout star That Mexican OT — and his openers Maxo Kream and Drodi — his second headlining tour since his breakout in 2023. With a new album, Texas Technician, he’ll have plenty of new material despite the relatively tight turnaround since his last spin around the block

You can find dates and ticketing info here.

Denzel Curry’s In-Your-Face ‘Hot Ones’ Video With TiaCorine And Ferg Is A Block Invasion

Denzel Curry’s aggressive new single “Hot One” gets a suitably gritty video today, as he, ASAP Ferg (who recently dropped the ASAP), and TiaCorine (fresh off her first-ever headlining tour) take over the block with their crew. Shot in the sort of grainy, lo-fi style of an early Memphis trap video or a mid-90s skate video, the visuals end up perfectly matching the tone of the song itself, which borrows and updates the sounds of early Three 6 Mafia classics. It even samples some old school Memphis rap from Gimisum Family, interpolating their 1993 track “Fear No Evil.”

“Hot One” will appear on Denzel’s upcoming album, King Of The Mischievous South Vol. 2, which is slated for release on July 19 with features from 2 Chainz, Armani White, ASAP Rocky, Juicy J, Kenny Mason, Kingpin Skinny Pimp of Gimisum Family, Maxo Kream, Mike Dimes, Project Pat, That Mexican OT, and more. King Of The Mischievous South Vol. 2 will drop two years after Curry’s last full-length release, Melt My Eyez See Your Future, and apparently find him returning to the combative aesthetics of his early music after the more introspective material on its predecessor.

King Of The Mischievous South Vol. 2 is out 7/19 via Loma Vista. Find more information here.

Megan Thee Stallion And Latto Have A Twerk-Off To Promote New Collaboration

Earlier this week, Megan Thee Stallion and GloRilla had some high-profile guests backstage with them after a recent concert. Those guests were Latto and Flo Milli and video of the four having a blast made the rounds online. That video turned out to be a teaser of a new collaboration that three of the four had on the way. Latto dropped her new single “Sunday Service” back in February. She finally followed it up overnight by dropping a remix version including both Megan and Flo Milli.

With the original racking up almost 12 million streams on Spotify alone, there’s clearly still interest in the song from fans. Now the trio of rap superstars have come together with their own expanded version of the track and fans were hyped. Part of the reason is that they were quick to promote the new song with attention grabbing tactics earlier this week. Megan and Latto are two of the most notorious twerkers in hip-hop and they showed off their skills side by side in a new video promoting the song’s release. Check out the impossible to ignore promotional video below.

Megan Thee Stallion And Latto’s New Collaboration

The video was shared to both Instagram and Twitter and had fan’s jaws hitting the floor on both platforms. “Meg be throwing it like rent due , and I live lol” one of the top comments on the Instagram post reads. “Ion even remember the mirror part lmfao FRIED 😭😭” Latto herself comments on the video. Her comments references a clip later in the video where the trio film themselves dancing in the mirror. They’ve all three been busy this year with Flo Milli dropping a new album back in March. Megan announced hers for later this month.

What do you think of Megan Thee Stallion and Latto showing off their twerking skills to promote their new collaboration? Which of the three rappers do you think stole the show on their new crossover? Let us know in the comment section below.

Coroner Confirms Brother Marquis’ Cause Of Death

2 Live Crew legend Brother Marquis passed away on Monday (June 3) due to a massive heart attack at the age of 58, new reports can confirm. Moreover, this comes specifically from Dantez Robinson, the Chief Deputy Coroner at the Etowah County Coroner’s Office in Alabama who made the ruling. According to TMZ, Robinson confirmed that there was no foul play involved in this tragic loss, and no external influence from drugs or otherwise that exacerbated natural causes. Marquis’ transcendence into another place shocked hip-hop fans when his Miami bass-pioneering group announced it earlier this week. Of course, tributes quickly came to honor his memory, legacy, and life.

“Mark Ross AKA Brother Marquis of the 2 Live crew has passed away,” the simple social media message read. “My Condolence goes out to the Family of Brother Marquis and so many of his Fans from around the World after learning his passing,” fellow 2 Live Crew member Uncle Luke expressed online after this news broke. “We took on so many fights for the culture made Great music together something I would never forget.

Will Eminem’s ‘Houdini’ Go No. 1 On The Singles Chart?

Last week, Eminem released “Houdini,” the first single from his upcoming album The Death Of Slim Shady (Coup de grâce). The track, which revives the trollish persona for comedic effect, wasn’t as well-received by some rap fans online due to its treatment of some of its subjects, but that isn’t stopping the hardcore Eminem faithful from giving it strong streaming numbers. Are those numbers enough to pull it to the top of the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart for the sixth No. 1 hit of his career?

According to Forbes (for some reason), many of the predictors of such things point to at least a top 5 showing for the self-declared Rap God, with social media accounts like Talk Of The Charts billing it for as high as a No. 2 debut. However, even the might of Eminem’s army of loyalists is meager when compared to the onslaught of support from country fans and the pop appeal of Post Malone. His country-leaning new single “I Had Some Help” with resurgent crooner Morgan Wallen is trending toward yet another appearance at No. 1.

It’s kind of ironic, when you consider the accusations of cultural appropriation that have been leveled at both artists, that it’s Post Malone, who upsets Eminem — and with a non-hip-hop song, no less.

You can check out the video for Eminem’s “Houdini” above.
