Will Smith Reunites With Joyner Lucas To Throw A Lyrical ‘Tantrum’ On Their Latest Collaboration

2024 has seen a number of Golden Era rap pioneers return to their roots. LL Cool J, MC Lyte, and Snoop Dogg have all released new albums this year (Snoop’s actually drops tonight), more than 30 years after each got their start. You can add Will Smith to that list, as well; while he hasn’t announced a full project as yet, he did share a pair of new songs: “Bulletproof,” which he performed at the BET Awards, and “Work Of Art.”

His latest single is called “Tantrum,” and it sees him reunite with a recent muse: Joyner Lucas, with whom he previously collaborated on a remix of the Massachusetts rapper’s homage to him, “Will.” After Joyner’s video caught Will’s attention back in 2020, the former Fresh Prince praised the younger protégé, leading to a meeting on Zoom, and eventually, it seems, a fruitful collaborative relationship.

Like LL’s raps on The FORCE, Will’s raps here are modernized from the style we best remember; since he’s probably not getting away with a “Gettin’ Jiggy Wit It” in 2024 (let alone a “Parents Just Don’t Understand”), it makes sense that he’d want to show his improved technical skills — especially when rapping alongside someone Eminem once called one of the best rappers ever. In the accompanying video, which you can watch above, the two rappers are represented by video game avatars, who perform their verses in a digitized version of what appears to be Miami — a nod to Smith’s extensive career that maybe should have extended to the content of the song as well.

Eminem’s new album, The Death Of Slim Shady (Coup De Grâce), has only been out for 30 minutes, but it’s already causing controversy — just not in the way you might think. While listening to the album’s first song, “Renaissance,” has lyrics dissing another rapper who is currently riding high on the wave of a recent battle: Kendrick Lamar.

Eminem’s been known for lashing out at his peers on record, and K Dot easily falls into that category. Certainly, Em does name check the younger rapper… But does he actually DISS Kendrick Lamar on The Death Of Slim Shady?

Sorry to those fans who think so, but he’s just mocking the “mind of a hater.” Check out the full sequence below:

As you can see, the seemingly combative lyric is coming from this imagined hater (some might say straw man) within the context of the lyrics. Maybe all the pugilistsic energy of the election year has fans up in arms, but as it turns out, for once, Em is actually defending the people he’s name checking. He also drops a slew of classic rap acts’ names in the verse, but we’ll have to see how many of his fans actually catch those — y’know since they “don’t really listen to rap, but love Eminem.” Y’all ain’t low.

Did Joyner Lucas Try To Start A Fake Beef With DaBaby?

If anybody had to hazard a guess about why beef is so prevalent in hip-hop right now, they might conclude it’s just good business. After all, Future and Metro Boomin’s We Don’t Trust You song “Like That” debuted at the top of the Billboard Hot 100 behind Kendrick Lamar’s fiery challenge to Drake and J. Cole, and J. Cole’s corresponding response, “7 Minute Drill,” debuted in the top five, despite being deleted just a week after its release. So, there might be a method to the mayhem — and apparently, it’s inspiring plenty of imitators, according to DaBaby.

In a recent interview with Shaquille O’Neal (cancel culture ain’t real, y’all), DaBaby maintained that amid all the chaos, he was contacted by another rapper with a business proposition: Start a fake beef to generate buzz. DaBaby didn’t reveal who the other rapper was — only allowing that it was a “lyricist” — and said he turned him down out of respect, not wanting to work his way into a shoot (basically, start off with a fake beef and end up in a real one). However, plenty of fans on Twitter (never calling it “X”) had a theory of the instigator’s identity: Joyner Lucas.

Enough users have posited Joyner as the culprit that he even felt he had to defend himself in the comments of DJ Akademiks’ post about it. “Man why tf everyone in comments saying it’s me?” he wrote.

Well… It certainly seems like the sort of thing he’d do. We all remember the back-and-forth he got into with Tory Lanez back in 2018, to say nothing of his longstanding beef with Logic, which he admitted in 2020 was caused by “jealousy.” He’s also the rapper who came to public notoriety thanks to high-concept swings like the viral “I’m Not Racist,” which attempted to make sense of recent protests from the perspective of a concerned white observer.

Before Joyner Lucas became a star rapper, he was doing big things independently. However, like most artists who are trying to grow even larger, signing with a major label is the way to go. Unfortunately, for the Massachusetts artist, the opposite was true. Joyner Lucas signed to one of the biggest names in the industry in 2016, Atlantic Records, releasing one project under them. That was 508-507-2209, which spawned one of his first massive hits, “Ultrasound.” Outside of that though, his experience was not all that great and was not what he was promised. Joyner detailed what went on behind the scenes for him in a recent interview on Math Hoffa’s My Expert Opinion podcast. According to HipHopDX, the major takeaway was that it was a scam in his eyes.

Joyner Lucas went onto roughly describe how Atlantic Records tried to sell him anything he wanted. As you will come to learn, he was looking forward to working with the label’s biggest names like Cardi B and Ed Sheeran. However, it was a, “f***ed up scam.” “They find an artist. They do a little research. They’ll have the artist come in. Everybody at the table will make it seem like they’ve been rocking with this artist for so long,” Lucas said.
