Janelle Monae caught an unfortunate bit of backlash for some slightly dark humor the other day, as they posted a video reenacting Michael Jackson’s infamous balcony-baby incident (if you don’t know what we’re talking about, you’ve got some serious pop culture history to learn). They didn’t address some fans’ controversial reactions to it, but they did seem to quietly take it down from their page, so we’d assume that they regret the decision to at least share the clip. It’s a pretty odd way to pay tribute to the King of Pop, but then again, maybe it was to highlight the controversies held in that career as well. Nevertheless, it looks like it won’t be a hot debate topic any longer.

Furthermore, this is especially curious because Janelle Monáe is a big fan of Michael, and especially of his sister, Janet Jackson. “We gather all around the world with your music as our soundtrack,” they introduced the Rhythm Nation icon for her Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction, calling her the “legendary queen of Black girl magic.” “We applaud you for your commitment to excellence [and] we celebrate you for giving us memories we wish we could bottle up and save for the next lifetime. History is not complete without you, Janet.”

Meanwhile, Janelle Monáe recently commented on how they pick out movie roles, and their explanation was quite curious. “Really, I love to get to know the characters and feel with anything I’m doing,” they told The Guardian. “I really have to feel it in my pubic hairs -– they have to vibrate. My underarm hairs definitely tingled when I got the Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery script.”

As for Michael Jackson, Janelle Monae’s odd reenactment wasn’t the only questionable “tribute” to him from artistic collaborators that raised fans’ eyebrows as of late. While many folks found this disrespectful, it also stands to reason that Janet sees this kind of thing often. While he’s clearly got a lot on his plate at the moment, the rapper took the time today to share a fairly random post, leaving his followers somewhat confused. The post features a photo of three lovely ladies, with a Jack-O-Lantern and some heart emojis in the caption. At the time of writing, it remains unclear exactly who these women are to Kodak or why he decided to post this, but social media users have some theories.

While some think he was simply a fan of the photo and thirsting over the women in it, others speculate that he could be working with them on something, like a music video. Either way, the post has left his commenters confused. One of the women featured in the photo even took to his comments section, seeming equally baffled by the post. “Lol why r we here,” she wrote, tagging the other two women. The photo appears to originate from their own feeds and was posted several weeks ago. This seems to suggest that they’re not actually working on anything with Kodak and that this was just a random post, though this is still unconfirmed.

Russ Hypes Up Collab Single With Will Smith Ahead Of Its Release

Russ is a polarizing artist. He talks tough, and makes lots of controversial statements. He also, however, backs up his claims with hard work. Russ went out and carved his own path as an independent artist, and he’s managed to build up a devoted fanbase over the last decade. He’s also gotten a chance to link up with huge names like Big Sean and Ty Dolla Sign. That being said, the collab that Russ announced on July 17 is his most impressive yet. The rapper will be releasing a joint single with none other than Will Smith.

Russ dropped the bombshell on Instagram. He posted a series of photos of him and Will Smith together, along with a detailed caption. The caption, in typical Russ fashion, detailed the significance of getting a chance to work with the Fresh Prince himself. “I did a school project on Big Willie Style when I was in 4th grade. So this is all a trip,” he wrote. “Will is a genius and gettin to talk with him about life and creativity was eye opening.” The rapper also made parallels between the struggles that both him and Smith have had to contend with. “[We] realized how similar our struggles are,” he said. “Which is why the song he sent to me to get on just aligned perfectly with where I’m at.”

Russ may be prone to hyperbole, but he also admitted to being starstruck by the encounter. He told his followers that he didn’t believe Will Smith actually contacted him at first. “Couple months ago we got an email from Will Smith’s team,” he recalled. “[He was] reaching out about wanting to connect and work on music. 100% thought it was fake.” It wasn’t until Russ hopped on a FaceTime call with Smith that he was convinced. The collab is still untitled, but Russ, Smith, and Smith’s son, Jaden, have already performed the song live.

The ability to rock onstage with one’s idol was something Russ made sure to appreciate. “A song got made and then boom I’m in Madrid performing it with him,” the rapper explained. “In front of 80,000 people at Santiago stadium. Insane.” None of the artists involved with the song have given a proper release date or title. It’s also unclear whether the collab will end up on a Russ album or a prospective Smith release. Either way, fan interest is piqued.

Monae is one of the most consistently inventive and exciting artists on the planet. All that said, her latest venture caught fans off guard. The singer was vacationing in Paris with her cyberpup and decided to show it off to fans by dangling it over a balcony. The parallels to the infamous Michael Jackson incident, in which the singer dangled his infant over the balcony, were not accidental.

The footage of Janelle Monae was obtained by The Shade Room. In it, the singer can be seen wearing a black wig and a red shirt identical to Jackson’s. Monae even went through the extra care of putting her cyberpup in a blanket, much like Jackson did with his son back in 2001. The whole recreation was odd. Monae dangled her pet over the balcony, then walked inside. She returned a few seconds later, before hiding behind a curtain and tossing a towel into the crowd. They say imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. That said, nobody has attempted to recreate this particular moment in MJ’s life. It’s a choice.

Nelly & Ashanti To Star In Their Own Reality Show Ahead Of Welcoming 1st Child Together

Nelly and Ashanti will reportedly be starring in their own reality series, according to a new report from The Jasmine Brand. The outlet exclusively reports that the two will begin pre-production “soon” with filming to take place in Nelly’s hometown of St. Louis. The move comes after Ashanti announced the two are expecting their first child together, earlier this year.

When the news of their reality show made its way to Instagram, fans of the couple had mixed responses. “PLEASE DON’T DO IT! It’s a setup for ruin and we’re rooting for yall!!!!,” one user wrote. Another more supportive fan remarked: “Nelly isn’t new to reality tv! It’s not going to a messy show so, I’m sure they know what’s best for them! Congratulations I’ll be tuned in.”

Drake Gets Trolled By Rick Ross After His Toronto Mansion Flooded

Drake and Rick Ross have given fans so many good songs. Then, 2024 happened. The two rappers decided to become enemies and endlessly diss each other. There were disses in the form of songs, which both Drake and Ross participated in, and disses via social media. The latter has largely been abandoned by the 6 God, but Rick Ross has not let up. The MMG honcho decided to poke fun at his former friend after his Toronto mansion was flooded.

Drake posted an Instagram video of his flooded mansion on July 16. The damage was severe, as water was seen filling up one of the rooms on the property. Drake tried to make light of the situation with a silly caption: “This better be espresso martini.” Ross, being the professional troll that he is, couldn’t resist a joke of his own. He posted a comment on the post and wrote back: “minor issues,” with a smirking emoji. Ross has developed a habit for kicking other rappers when they’re down. Especially if he’s already had beef with them.

Rick Ross targeted one of Drake’s so-called friends, The Game, on July 10. He saw a headline pertaining to The Game’s legal troubles, DM’d him the link, and proceeded to post the exchange on Instagram. The Game made fun of Rozay’s weight, but the latter clapped back with a ruthless jab. “Since we @’n n**gas, here you go b*tch,” he wrote. A few weeks prior, Ross went at Drake for having a flirty exchange with his baby mama, Tia Kemp. Kemp praised Drake for being a “GOAT,” and Ross clapped back in the comment section by typing: “pedo vs. granny.”

Drake, meanwhile, has taken a step back from beefing. He tried to take on half the rap industry earlier in the year.
