Earlier this week, the iconic mother of Angela White, FKA Blac Chyna, took to social media to spit some bars for her fans. As expected, she threw plenty of shade along the way, namely towards Megan Thee Stallion and Cardi B.
The Finding Love ASAP star is known to have issues with Cardi, as she’s both a fan and friend of one of the femcee’s longtime rivals, Nicki Minaj. During Nicki’s infamous feud with Meg after the drop of “Hiss,” she also sided with the “FTCU” performer. She’s since accused Cardi B of stealing her look and sneak dissing her, and slammed any Meg supporter to cross her path.
Tokyo kept her disses short and simple, but they still managed to pack a punch. “Nicki Minaj, shout-out,” she rhymes. “Cardi B lost out. Megan thotted out.” Clearly, Tokyo Toni isn’t dodging any kind of smoke these days. It’s to be seen whether or not either of the rappers will respond. Fortunately for them, they’re in good company, as the reality star has also previously dissed Beyonce, Karlissa Saffold, and many more. She even recently went after Rick Ross in another freestyle, calling the hitmaker a “fat bald b*tch.”

It’s been a long time since Cam’ron dropped new music. The New York rapper has rebranded himself as a podcaster on the popular series It Is What It Is, but fans are still waiting for him to pick the mic back up. Fans can rejoice, because he finally did. Cam’ron decided to give fans a taste of new music on April 22, with a freestyle meant to commemorate the release of It Is What It Is season 4. Rather than get fans buzzing about new episodes, however, it fueled rumors of Cam getting back in the studio.
Cam proved that he hasn’t lost a step on the untitled freestyle. “Heck my shoes before I put them on, I don’t trust a soul,” he raps over Hitmakerz-esque production. Cam credited the beat to Goddams, who’s worked with Masta Ace, Mobb Deep, and the “Purple Haze” wordsmith himself among countless others. The freestyle drew rave reviews from users, who pleaded with Cam’ron to get back in the studio and bless the world with more Dipset magic.
Cam’ron has comfortably settled into his role as podcaster, but he like to tease fans every once in a while. During a February episode of It Is What It Is, Cam claimed he and co-host Mase have multiple collabs in the vault. “It’s up to Mase to decide when to drop them,” he added.
Cam’ron didn’t have the prodigious output of a Lil Wayne, but he was one of the most consistent rappers of the 2000s. He dropped five solo albums and a ton of Dipset mixtapes/compilations. He’s slowed down his output, however, over the last decade and a half. He waited a decade to follow up Crime Pays (2009) with Purple Haze 2 (2019), which remains his last official release.
Cam talked about the decision to stop recording during an interview with Complex. He claimed that he wanted to pursue different ventures like podcasting and screenwriting, and urged others to do the same. “Rappers who came out in the ’90s or early 2000s, [rapping] shouldn’t be the main thing you’re doing,” he noted. “Like when you say Jay-Z is a billionaire, it’s not all for music.”
Cam’ron has officially come back around to rapping. He dropped the mixtape The Lost Files, Vol. 1 in 2023, and dropped a guest verse on J. Cole’s “Ready ’24.” There’s no project title or release date in sight, but it’s nice to know the NYC legend has still got it.
REASON recently dropped a killer freestyle over the song “8AM In Charlotte” by the 6ix God, which is optically a pretty interesting move considering that he’s signed to TDE. If you’re reading this from under your rock in the middle of nowhere, Kendrick Lamar is in some pretty heavy beef with Drizzy right now… or is it the other way around? Either way, the West Coast MC noticed two problems with the general reaction to his freestyle. The first is that people called this instrumental a “Drake beat,” and the second is that he’s doing this to pick a side against K.Dot, who’s not even on Top Dawg anymore but obviously still has some strong bonds with his former parters and label mates.
“It’s “Conductor’s” beat not drakes. I love good production!” REASON replied on Twitter to a page posting his freestyle. With that first statement, and a reply affirming that the beat is actually produced by Conductor Williams and Mario Luciano, he rightfully attempts to combat producer erasure in hip-hop discussions, something we should all do a better job of avoiding. Also, the “I Don’t Trust You!“MC seemed to avoid taking specific stances with that last sentence, simply standing by his love of good production. As such, maybe this doesn’t have to be the “civil war” that we’re all painting it as.
In fact, good production was also the reason behind REASON’s co-sign of Drake’s Kendrick Lamar diss, commonly referred to as “Push Ups.” However, this was just co-signing the new beat for it, not the actual lyrics or sentiment against Mr. Morale. But for fans who are familiar with his trajectory with TDE, you know that he has plenty of conflict with the label and is actively trying to get out of his deal. They butted heads over realized potential, album delays, and an overall lack of support from the higher-ups that they attribute to not making the right moves as an artist. Furthermore, this complicated web is one that Aubrey Graham’s shots at Top Dawg Entertainment might slightly illuminate.
Still, that’s just speculation at this point, as there’s no clear link between all of these parties and situations. Elsewhere, the TDE camp also reacted to J. It’s a sample from Jennifer Lopez’s iconic hit, “Jenny from the Block.” The snippet was accompanied with a video, which showcased Scar Lip mouthing the freestyle and quite literally on the “block.” Furthermore, for those unacquainted with Scar Lip, she’s been making waves with her distinctive fusion of rap. She carves out a distinct niche in the ever-evolving hip-hop scene. With her upcoming freestyle, she ventures into different territory that’s different from all of her releases thus far.
The decision to sample “Jenny from the Block,” a chart-topping anthem from the early 2000s, serves as a nod to the cyclical nature of music. What once served as a nostalgic anthem for Millennials now is breathing new life into its timeless appeal. However, responses to the freestyle have been mixed. If there is someone who we think has had a frustrating career in hip-hop, it is DaBaby. We have seen the Cleveland, Ohio rapper flash his technical abilities. He can write, flow, all while having a commanding mic presence. However, we feel – as well as a good amount of the community feels – that it has been an inconsistent ride in terms of quality. His last couple of projects, namely, Baby On Baby 2, BETTER THAN YOU, and BLAME IT ON BABY, have come and gone. South African starlet Tyla’s 2023 hit “Water” was recently given the NLE Choppa treatment, and it’s as raunchy as one would expect. The rapper appeared on Kai Cenat’s stream earlier this week, where he freestyled over the famous track while the internet icon danced behind him. It doesn’t appear as though the 21-year-old was taking his remix too seriously. Either way, some commenters think he nailed it, and are sounding off on Twitter/X.
“I mean it could have been worse,” one fan writes. “This good tunes,” another claims. Some critics weren’t impressed, however, and are calling for the Memphis-born performer to leave the song alone. “I think we need to take a step back with music,” one Twitter/X user says. On March 20th, Big Sean made waves online when he released his new freestyle “Whole Time” on social media platforms X and Instagram, along with new visuals. Setting the tone for the release of “Precision,” which arrived two days later, the track’s video features the Detroit MC dropping bar after bar as he walks around a room in his LA home. “Whole Time” uses a slowed-down sample of Pharcyde’s classic beat on “Drop” by J. Dilla. It’s laced with smart, witty writing, and a few jabs here and there. However, some lines stand out as the best on the track — affirming Sean’s position as one of the greats. Big Sean opens the “Whole Time” freestyle admitting how inconsistent his career has been without necessarily stating the cause. Nonetheless, he quickly makes it known that he is not in competition with anyone. “I just haven’t had the energy to compete with enemies / Or y’all so-called bigger three,” he raps. Naturally, many who have seen this quickly compared it to Kendrick Lamar’s bombshell in his surprise cameo for Future and Metro Boomin’s “Like That,” where he goes: “Motherf*ck the Big Three…it’s just f*ck the big three…it’s just big me…” However, there is little chance Kendrick could have been sneak dissing Big Sean, considering he would have submitted his verse long before Sean’s freestyle, though many joked that his scathing verse on “Like That” overshadowed the release of “Precision.”

A fan of double entendres, Big Sean makes it clear in his freestyle that he won’t be put down or underestimated, even if he never achieved similar commercial success as a few of his peers. The theories that Big Sean wrote several songs off Kanye West’s Graduation (without getting credits) continue to swirl around timelines, though it appears that we received confirmation. Top considerations of Big Sean’s Graduation contributions include “Champion,” “I Wonder,” and “Barry Bonds.” Regardless of absent evidence, however, Big Sean may have confirmed it in the “Whole Time” freestyle when he asks about the now-famous bar. This is also quite interesting, considering how important the album is to Ye’s discography. Ye also proclaimed that signing Big Sean to GOOD music was “the worst thing I’ve ever done” on an episode of Drink Champs. Big Sean subsequently retorted that Ye owed him money, when he visited the same podcast, though the two have seemingly squashed any beef between them.
“B.I.G. But Somehow I Need A Shrink”
Big Sean has always been vocal about his struggles with mental health, and he makes a few references throughout the freestyle. “I used to be held back and hide behind fear / but F.E.A.R is just false evidence appearing real,” he spits. However, none hit harder than “B.I.G. but somehow I need a shrink.” It’s pretty self-explanatory, but it’s been commended for his vulnerability.

Sean seemingly intended this bar on “Whole Time” for the cultured fans. Although Hip Hop now transcends genres, it is still a lifestyle and a statement, and Big Sean was the first to speak Pow Chains into existence. He disclosed how he started the Pow Chain trend in a 2012 interview with GQ. “Verbal from the Teriyaki Boyz in Japan gave me and Kanye samples,” he said. “We were the first people to have it. Then I became homies with Verbal, and I told him it’d be so tight to have these iced-out and a little bigger… Chris Brown came up to me and was like, ‘Yo, I try to get my chains like this.’”

Sean speeds up his flow numerous times in “Whole Time,” like with his Inception bar. However, before then, he first dropped this round, “I hate when people tell me it’s never that serious / You ain’t have to shoot your first album cover at Sears.” Rapping in the second person, he makes a few more references to when he first started his career: recording at Earl and A-Tone’s basement and the same studio as J.Dilla in just 30 minutes. The nostalgic walk down memory lane ends with his dedication to growing his career. “Before you made a dollar off of rap / But it was your full-time job though regardless”
“Sh*t, How Long You Knew Your Mind Was A Goldmine?”
Big Sean closes the freestyle in the most self-assured way possible. From the start of his music career, through the downtimes with the label, he has never doubted his talents. “Right now I’m talking to the old Sean / Sh*t, how long you knew was your mind was a goldmine? / Before you got signed? Sh*t, both times? / How long you knew it be like this? / N*gga, the whole time.” Big Sean is cocky all through, and he’s definitely earned the right to be.
