Kanye West Divulges On Falling Out With Pusha T

Kanye West’s recent interview with Justin LaBoy on his The Download podcast did a whole lot more than add another solider to the Drake coup d’état taking over hip-hop right now. Moreover, it also saw him open up about a lot of industry relationships, past claims and beefs, and what the future might hold. One particularly interesting part was when Ye reflected on his relationship with Pusha T, former G.O.O.D. Music president and frequent collaborator. The two seemed to fall out following Push’s comments on his former partner’s antisemitic and right-wing ties and behavior, but the Yeezy mogul also suggested that they aren’t completely disconnected right now.

“I just spoke with Pusha the other day,” Kanye West remarked. “It was good to talk to him. It was the first time talking to him in a couple months. We made good music together. I thought that somehow because I made beats and made music for somebody that when I couldn’t see my children, these people would use their platform. ‘Cause I used my platform on their behalf. Now I realize no one owes me anything… If you depend on somebody who is not giving you what you need, you’re the one that’s in the wrong.”

Meanwhile, this is what Pusha T had to say to XXL about Kanye West’s worrisome behavior and affiliations in late 2022, which he expressed in tandem with his departure from G.O.O.D. Music. “It’s beyond that and it’s nothing to tap dance around,” he posited. “It’s wrong. Period. But to me, it’s just me and him having a difference of opinion yet again. ’Cause we done had this for years. He’s not speaking to me now. If you ain’t with it, you ain’t down. And I ain’t with it. REASON Explains Why He Rapped Over Drake’s “8AM In Charlotte”

REASON recently dropped a killer freestyle over the song “8AM In Charlotte” by the 6ix God, which is optically a pretty interesting move considering that he’s signed to TDE. If you’re reading this from under your rock in the middle of nowhere, Kendrick Lamar is in some pretty heavy beef with Drizzy right now… or is it the other way around? Either way, the West Coast MC noticed two problems with the general reaction to his freestyle. The first is that people called this instrumental a “Drake beat,” and the second is that he’s doing this to pick a side against K.Dot, who’s not even on Top Dawg anymore but obviously still has some strong bonds with his former parters and label mates.

“It’s “Conductor’s” beat not drakes. I love good production!” REASON replied on Twitter to a page posting his freestyle. With that first statement, and a reply affirming that the beat is actually produced by Conductor Williams and Mario Luciano, he rightfully attempts to combat producer erasure in hip-hop discussions, something we should all do a better job of avoiding. Also, the “I Don’t Tr u st You!“ MC seemed to avoid taking specific stances with that last sentence, simply standing by his love of good production. As such, maybe this doesn’t have to be the “civil war” that we’re all painting it as.

In fact, good production was also the reason behind REASON’s co-sign of Drake’s Kendrick Lamar diss, commonly referred to as “Push Ups.” However, this was just co-signing the new beat for it, not the actual lyrics or sentiment against Mr. Morale. But for fans who are familiar with his trajectory with TDE, you know that he has plenty of conflict with the label and is actively trying to get out of his deal. They butted heads over realized potential, album delays, and an overall lack of support from the higher-ups that they attribute to not making the right moves as an artist. Furthermore, this complicated web is one that Aubrey Graham’s shots at Top Dawg Entertainment might slightly illuminate.

Lupe Fiasco & Kid Cudi Beef: Unpacking Their Feud

Over the course of almost ten years, Kid Cudi and Lupe Fiasco have kept up one of the oddest and seemingly pettiest hip-hop beefs in recent memory. Its origins center around a near-encounter at a BAPE store over fifteen years ago and a debacle over Fiasco allegedly exploiting his fans for quick money through expensive per-request verses. However, they admire and praise each other’s work and companionship through Lupe’s early support of Cudi and his personal struggles. This long-running tale of rivalry is that of avoidance, principle, and the importance of a one-on-one conversation. First, let’s start in 2008, back when Mr. Rager was just Scott Mescudi, a BAPE store employee.

One day, the Chicago lyricist arrived, and Kid Cudi went downstairs to avoid him until he left, which he said was because he didn’t want any famous rappers seeing him at his job because, he felt that when he would eventually get famous, they might bring up this past against him in future beef. What’s ironic is that Lupe Fiasco ended up feuding with him anyway for unrelated reasons. Regardless, the Cleveland native thanked Lupe for his support in a 2010 Complex cover story. “There’s one artist in this game who has always had my back and had nothing but love to show, and that’s Lupe Fiasco,” Cudder remarked. “Every time I see that man, it’s nothing but love. I saw him a little after it, and he was like, ‘I’m worried about you, man, just checking in.’ He’s somebody who I know really genuinely gives a f**k.”

How Did This Beef Start?

Their beef really began in August 2014, when Kid Cudi questioned Lupe Fiasco’s financial decision to charge fans $500 for a personalized verse. The DRILL MUSIC IN ZION legend felt blindsided by his colleague and friend and clapped back by referencing Cudi’s own expensive fashion collaborations. In January 2015, they battled again over Azealia Banks’ comments that Lupe and other artists (including Kendrick Lamar) seemed to blame the Black community for the death of Mike Brown.

Since then, Lupe Fiasco proceeded to repeatedly call Kid Cudi out for switching up on him and refusing to make amends or confront him about the situation. During a November 2015 show, Lupe threatened to fight Cudi and said he wouldn’t hold a grudge against him in the same performance and even provided a bizarre Santa metaphor to explain why the Kid was a “b***h.” He mocked the Man On The Moon artist for threatening Drake from rehab in 2016, expressing that he “needs his a** beat,” and later, dissed him in 2018 while apologizing to Barack Obama and Kendrick for his criticism. Even though their attacks died down for a bit, Lupe reignited things in 2021 by dissing him about his feature on the Drake album Certified Lover Boy. At this point, it became clear that this was mostly one-sided since Cudi refused to engage.

Where Are Kid Cudi & Lupe Fiasco At Now?

Still, all this beef emerged while these artists continued to praise each other back-handedly on occasion. For example, Lupe Fiasco said that Kid Cudi was “a GOAT, but a b***h” in 2022. In addition, he wished for Will Smith and Chris Rock to make up after the Oscars slap while standing on his distaste for the 39-year-old. Lupe quadrupled down at the end of 2022 by responding with “F**k him for life” to a fan asking if they’d ever reconcile, but history took a turn this year with Cudi’s recent interview with Zane Lowe on Apple Music. Here, he recalled the 2008 BAPE story with the 41-year-old, which prompted him to respond on Twitter with more attacks. While the “GHOST!” creative offered an apology via social media, the “MS. MURAL” lyricist wasn’t having it and said that he needed to talk to him if this was to resolve.

Now, at the end of all this, Kid Cudi let fans know via Twitter that he spoke with Lupe Fiasco and that they hashed everything out, and his former opponent’s co-sign of this and promotion of his new album INSANO means that they finally squashed their decade-long beef… for now. Afterward, Lupe trolled a fan by suggesting that part of their deal was that he would beat one Cudi fan up (which you can read below). As such, maybe this tale isn’t over, but we’re happy that these two amazing artists are finally at peace. Moreover, he reflected a little bit more than last time about what that tweet means to him, and whether he stands by it today.

“People in our position ain’t supposed to speak on their political candidates,” Benny The Butcher expressed. “I also learned everybody voting for Trump, you know what I’m saying? As such, it looks like this relates to differing viewpoints on whether they should do a Cash Money or Hot Boyz reunion tour. However, it seems like things aren’t actually that personal or contentious, and those words are from Yada himself. Moreover, he recently spoke to Adam22 of No Jumper, who was under the impression that he and Ak had a run-in or inciting incident of sorts. Then, the Detroit MC went on to explain that this was completely based on one of his friends’ bombast, and that the media personality shouldn’t be mad at him for something he never did.

Furthermroe, this is quite notable because Sada Baby fortunately squashed a lot of his rap feuds over the past few years. As such, you know that when he is looking for the smoke or dismissing it, he’s speaking from a knowledgeable and more healed place. For example, the Skuba Sada artist mended his relationship with Doe Boy earlier this year, which was great for hip-hop to witness. Hopefully even more people take cues from this behavior and think about what petty situations are really worth engaging in.

The result is a more unified scene in Detroit that is more able to support each other and develop individually without pressures of artificial loyalty.
