Today In Hip Hop History: Sheff G, Sleepy Hallow Arrested On 140-Count Indictment Against Alleged Gang Members One Year Ago

On this date in 2023, Brooklyn drill rappers Sheff G and Sleepy Hallow are of over 32 alleged gang members arrested in a 140-count indictment in New York.

According to the New York Daily News, Sheff G and Sleepy Hallow treated fellow gang members to a splurging dinner at a Manhattan steak house in celebration of a 2020 shooting executred at Prospect Lefferts Gardens that killed 23-year-old Theodore Senior and injured five mores.

In addition, one of the members was awarded with a new custom gold chain referencing the street the dead man was from. According to NYPD Deputy Chief Jason Savino, the members wore matching outfits during their visit to the steakhouse.

24-year-old Sheff G, born Michael Williams, and 23-year-old, Sleepy Hollow, born Tegan Chambers, and 30 additional gang members were connected to 27 occasions of violence, which included at minium a dozen shootings. The arrested men and women are alleged members of 8 Trey Crips and 9 Way gangs.

“Sheff G is not a wannabe drill rapper. He is a legitimate person who made it good. He has gold records, he’s made a lot of money. He rented a very large house, some may call it a mansion, in Short Hills, N.J.,” Gonzalez said.

He added, “He [Sheff G] used his fame and fortune to elevate gang violence in Brooklyn.”

The investigation began after the Gardens shooting, sparked by social media disses between G and a Folk Nation gang-affiliated rapper. The shooting was executed in partnership of 8 Trey and 9 way. Authorities revealed a text message from Sheff G’s sister Williams’ stated members of the rival gangs needed “to get hit or killed.” Sheff G asked for receipts to show the executed shooting, receiving images fo the victim and news articles.

Sheff G served 15 months behind bars on these charges before the 25-year-old Brooklynite was released from the Otis Bantum Correctional Center in the Bronx on April 19. Sleepy Hallow was released the day before Valentine’s Day of 2023 after serving only eight months behind bars.

J Cole had himself in a weird situation on Sunday night. Overall, it was all because of the apology he gave to Kendrick Lamar. Just a couple of days prior, Cole dissed Kendrick and his discography on the song “7 Minute Drill.” However, it seems like Cole had an immediate change of heart as he realized his head just wasn’t in this feud. Instead, he wanted to show unity with Lamar, knowing that Kendrick is one of the greatest artists of this generation. Unfortunately for Cole, his decision came with a whole lot of scrutiny, and a questioning of his legacy.

In the aftermath of all of this, J Cole fans are certainly feeling the heat. In fact, some of them are coming up with unique conspiracy theories to try and justify why Cole did what he did. Simply put, his fans are currently fighting for their lives. In fact, one fan took to Reddit where he concocted an interesting theory about Cole and his upcoming album, The Fall Off. Essentially, this fan is of the belief that Cole is simply playing a character. This character is that of a rapper falling off, and his first act was apologizing to Kendrick.

On Reddit, the theory was roasted by fans who told him that he was losing his mind. Furthermore, the post was shared on Twitter, where even more ridicule was rained down. Needless to say, any Cole fan who tries to argue in favor of his apology, will be struck down by the internet. It is a sad sight, but at the end of the day, this is rap beef. Apologies are usually going to be clowned upon, and that is no different with a superstar such as Cole.

E.Ness Calls Diddy Accusations A “Smear Campaign”

E.Ness is the latest celebrity to speak out about the wave of sexual assault accusations against Diddy, which also involve various other alleged crimes. Moreover, he’s taking the side of folks who think this is all fake and a ploy to punish him based on false claims. For those unaware, Ness was part of Da Band, the Bad Boy rap group whose creation and career was chronicled in the MTV reality series Making The Band 2. This defense from a label mate also adds onto Sean Combs’ own denials, but their voices are quite small in the wider discourse on these allegations.

“It’s a smear campaign,” E.Ness claimed concerning the Diddy lawsuits during an interview with Directed BY CEO Nafees on YouTube. “That’s what’s happening with Puff. It’s a smear campaign. And what they usually do is they go to your personal habits. They start attacking your personal habits, your girlfriends, your exes. Then they try to find something to attack you through those vessels.” He also alleged that this is the “classic rollout” that they gave other alleged celebrity abusers like R. Kelly, Michael Jackson, Mike Tyson, and Bill Cosby.

E.Ness Speaks On Diddy Situation

However, despite all this speculation and conflicting narratives, Diddy has popped out at least a few times for the public eye beyond just his defenses of himself. Recently, he and his family hit up Rolling Loud Los Angeles over the weekend, where he and his children got to see Ye and Ty Dolla $ign, Nicki Minaj, and likely other sets at the festival. Still, the Bad Boy mogul remains quite tight-lipped and private amid all these claims, as he has a lot of legal baggage to handle. While others agree with E.Ness’ assessment, there are far too many testimonies with too much weight to ignore.

Meanwhile, as the New York icon’s charter school also reportedly struggles to stay up to snuff, he will need many solutions his way fast. Nevertheless, what most folks want is accountability under a fair legal process, and for the industry to reckon with long-term avoidance of crimes like these. Benzino went on an antisemitic rant during his viral appearance on Drink Champs, earlier this week. While he’s been making headlines for his emotional meltdown about feuding with Eminem and his daughter, Coi Leray, he’s now facing backlash for spreading conspiracy theories.

“Let’s build each other,” he said. “Let me tell you about the Jews that Kanye [West] talked about. The Jews were the slaves and they came together and they bought within each other, and now look at them. Media, banking, entertainment — they run sh*t. We can run sh*t, but we killing each other. All you young n****s, stop killing each other.”

Later in the interview, he expanded: “If we love us and did what the Jews did — see how the Jews control banking, media, entertainment; they’re in Beverly Hills, Miami — we could do the same thing, but the problem with us is we’re killing each other.” The comments echo those of Kanye West, who ranted about Jared Kushner during his controversial appearance on the show back in 2022. At the time, Ye argued that “Kushner is an example of how the Jewish people have their hand on every single business that controls the world.” Accusing Jews of controlling “banking, media, entertainment” and more is a common antisemitic troupe, according to the Anti-Defamation League, as well as many other organizations.

Breaking into tears, he explained how it’s affected his relationship with his daughter and her career in the entertainment industry. Ice Spice Accused Of Satanic Hand Signals At The Super Bowl By Conspiracy Theorists

Ice Spice recently had a ball at the Super Bowl on Sunday (February 11) with her good pal Taylor Swift. However, just like with so many other artists right now, she couldn’t have a good time in peace without facing some satanist accusations. Moreover, conspiracy theorists think that the “Deli” hitmaker displayed satanic hand signs at the event. Particularly, she apparently did some devil horns signs and then grabbed onto her upside-down cross, which some took as an overt sign of satanic worship. Of course, these are mostly more conservative or religious circles talking about this, or ones who just want an excuse to hate on the Bronx rapper.

In fact, it seems like a lot of times artists face claims like these, it’s for pretty innocuous things that are more of a reflection of religious imagery being repurposed for other reasons in pop culture and the media. That hand sign is the same symbol you’d put up during a rock or metal show, for example. In other cultures, it doesn’t have a relation to the devil at all, so folks are probably just exaggerating. If that’s how Ice Spice wants to act now that her newest single “Think U The S**t (Fart)” is her highest-charting single so far, then so be it. That doesn’t make reflect any sympathy for the devil.

Jokes aside, perhaps treating this concern as a mere joke only makes the issue worse. After all, do you think these folks are very open to criticism or mocking remarks if they’re complaining about Satan and hip-hop at the big football game? Nevertheless, it’s already been a pretty big year for Ice Spice, one that will surely only get grander. Her debut studio album is in the works, and when it lands, it will likely make another massive splash.

Meanwhile, this also comes amid rapidly brewing beef between the 24-year-old and Latto. While things aren’t explicitly combative yet, there have been too many subliminals and coincidences to ignore. Further details surrounding the Florida rapper’s arrest are unclear. Ironically enough, Richey just unveiled a new music video for his track “Federal Nightmares,” which has led some fans to believe that he had an inkling his reported arrest was imminent.

Unfortunately, however, this is far from Real Boston Richey’s first run-in with the law. This latest development has brought about discussions of his 2013 arrest, as well as the snitching allegations he faced last year. Reportedly, he and two others were involved in a stolen vehicle case at the time of the arrest. In 2023, 1090 Jake came through with paperwork alleging that it proved the rapper had snitched on two different occasions. A video later surfaced appearing to show the performer being questioned by police and seemingly identifying various suspects.

Nicki Minaj’s “Big Foot,” the infamous Megan Thee Stallion diss, is doing pretty well commercially… but not as well as the Queen demands. Moreover, she recently hosted a Twitter Spaces conversation with Joe Budden on Wednesday (January 31), during which she made some very wide-ranging claims. One of these was the Trinidadian superstar’s belief that the Houston MC wanted “a Rihanna moment” with her testimony about the Tory Lanez trial. In other words, Megan wanted undue sympathy for abuse, she posited, which stirred up a lot of controversy from fans and detractors alike. Regardless, Nicki thinks much of this negative reception is false.

Furthermore, among many other industry big-shots, she took aim at Lyor Cohen, a music executive who has been YouTube’s Global Head of Music since 2016. Specifically, Nicki Minaj accused him of allowing or implementing bots on her content to sabotage the success of “Big Foot” or paint it in a bad light, perhaps through negative comments or other metrics. “We have screenshots of the YouTube bots, it’s cr*zy,” she remarked during the Spaces conversation. “Lyor, you better not… Lyor, don’t play with me, n***a. I hope you ain’t around that company no more right now.”

The First Lady of Young Money didn’t stop there, as she also made similar claims against Twitter and TikTok about how fake backlash and criticism is being amplified as a sabotaging method. This is nothing new for Nicki Minaj or her Barbz to reckon with, and part of why it’s a prevailing sentiment is because she finds so much overwhelming support from her fanbase that everything else seems moot. Brazilian “Alien” Might Actually Be Italian Basketball Player

An explanation for the recent viral video of an “alien” in Brazil might actually be an Italian basketball player. Felipe Motta, who plays for Flamengo, claims that the video of a “tall alien” doing “surveillance” on top of a hill on the island of Ilha do Mel is him during a recent hike. The footage went viral after being posted online. Furthermore, the original poster claimed that it’s “impossible” for people to reach the hill summit the “aliens” were spotted on. The Brazilian government later jumped on the viral video, using it to boost tourism to the island.

As for Motta, he said that people freaking out about his height is nothing new. However, he is taking the new viral fame in stride and joked that he would warn people the next time he went hiking. Despite this, some people have claimed that this isn’t an adequate explanation give there was a second “alien” spotted in the same video as the one that Motta claims to appear in.

Wizards Cut Shoplifting-Accused Player

However, one player who isn’t having such a pleasant time is second-year NBA player Ryan Rollins. The 21-year-old was charged with seven counts of petty larceny for items worth less than $1,000. The Wizards waived Rollins on Monday, before the charges were announced. Rollins, who played college ball at Toledo, was a second-round draft pick by the Warriors in 2022. However, he was part of the trade to the Wizards that brought Jordan Poole to the team.

“We just recently learned of the charges against Ryan. We cannot comment on that matter, or the basis for our roster decisions.” Winger added: “We do take our role very seriously as citizens of the DMV, representatives of our fans and a team our community can be proud of. These are expectations, not aspirations. We’re eager to move forward with our team as constituted and pursue excellence on and off the court,” Monumental Basketball president Michael Winger told The Athletic.

Junior M.A.F.I.A. was a Hip Hop collective mentored and created by legendary rapper, The Notorious B.I.G. As expected, the group of talented youngsters made a huge splash in the rising wave of Hip Hop in the 90s. Their lauded debut studio album, Conspiracy, celebrated its 28th anniversary in August 2023. Conspiracy is widely heralded as a disruptive focal point in the group’s existence. While Junior M.A.F.I.A. released two albums, Conspiracy is the only one on which all original members of the collective appear.

They broke out as an extension of B.I.G.’s musical family. The core members of Junior M.A.F.I.A. included: Lil’ Kim, Lil’ Cease, Trife, Nino Brown, Chico Del Vec, Kleptomaniac, Larceny, Capone, Mr. Bristal, and Bugsy. Almost three decades later, and the album’s sound is still as fresh as ever. Enduring through the ever-changing landscape of rap music, Conspiracy has stood the test of time.

The Rise Of Junior M.A.F.I.A.

Conspiracy marked the beginning of a notable professional career in music for all members of the collective. All of its members were under the age of 20 when they formed but were bursting with talent regardless. Junior M.A.F.I.A. particularly worked in close proximity with The Notorious B.I.G., which helped in crafting their brash, authentic sound. This also led to the commercial success of the album. It peaked at the eighth spot on the Billboard 200 chart and achieved a Gold certification from the RIAA. It also, and rather quickly, secured Junior M.A.F.I.A.’s presence in Hip Hop. However, it is often argued that Conspiracy’s greatest triumph was launching the solo careers of the members of the collective, most notably, the Queen Bee, Lil’ Kim.

Junior M.A.F.I.A.: Impact and Legacy

The cultural impact of Conspiracy extended beyond the album’s release. It contributed to the East Coast Hip Hop movement of the mid-1990s and has remained a classic in the Hip Hop genre in the past 28 years. Additionally, Junior M.A.F.I.A.’s rise gave a fresh twist to the strength of group projects. Today, many Hip Hop collectives continue to emerge as a result of their success. Above all, Conspiracy assisted in raising a generation of Hip Hop enthusiasts, and while Junior M.A.F.I.A. may no longer be together, the collective has left a long-lasting mark on the genre with their debut album.

Kid Rock Drinks Bud Light, Fans Claim It’s A Conspiracy

Kid Rock rocketed himself back into the national spotlight this year as he became the face of the boycott against Bud Light. Conservatives nationwide declared that they would no longer drink the Anheuser-Busch product after the company ran an ad campaign featuring transgender influencer Dylan Mulvaney. The boycott, led by figures such as Rock, did make a noticeable impact on Anheuser-Busch sales, with the company reporting a 10% slump in second-quarter revenue. Rock’s reaction was particularly memorable, with the Michigan native filming himself shooting up a row of Bud Light cans.

Well, how things change. Multiple reports from August 17 place Kid Rock at a concert in Nashville drinking a can of Bud Light. Numerous photos show the ex-husband of Pamela Anderson holding onto the familiar tall blue can while wearing one of his signature hats. The concert in question was the Colt Ford show at the Skydeck.

While many people jokingly referred to Rock as a “hypocrite”, there was a very different reaction occurring amongst his right-wing compatriots. Those who politically align with Rock scrambled to his defence, stating that the pictures were fake and an intentional attack on Rock. “Actually he was drinking Coors Light can. This is a lie someone altered it,” one right-wing account claimed. Firstly, it’s very funny if he was drinking Coors given that the brand is a major sponsor of several LGBT initiatives. Meanwhile, other right-wingers are trying to claim that they “always suspected” that Rock was a secret liberal trying to be MAGA for the clout.

In short, the right wing is falling over themselves to try and explain the simple fact that Kid Rock, like many other right-wing figures, is a grifter. He told you what you wanted to hear so that you’d buy whatever he was selling to you. There is no conspiracy. No one is going out of their way to get Kid Rock canceled by his own team. He is, simply, a hypocrite who enjoys mediocre beer and country music concerts.
