Over the weekend, Chance the Rapper took center stage both in the art world and in philanthropy, showcasing his multifaceted talents and commitment to his community.

SocialWorks, the youth empowerment charity founded by Chance the Rapper, proudly presented a special benefit concert headlined by Chance himself. This one-night-only event was held on April 13th at the historic Ramova Theater in Chicago with 100% of proceeds going to the non-profit.

The highly anticipated event promised an evening of exceptional entertainment while championing a noble cause. With Chance the Rapper headlining and DJ Oreo opening, attendees experienced an immersive musical experience that reflected the spirit of giving back to the community.

Chance debuted his latest interdisciplinary work, “The Last Stair,” in collaboration with  Chicago-born, Florence-based painter Thelonious Stokes at EXPO Chicago, The International Exposition of Contemporary & Modern Art. From April 11 – April 14, the large-scale Oil on Canvas work was on view for the first time ever. “The Last Stair” is part of Chance’s highly-anticipated project, Star Line Gallery, due out later this year. Chance and Thelonious also delivered a keynote at the Expo with Asma Naeem Ph.D. (Baltimore Museum of Art), moderated by Nate Freeman (Vanity Fair). The conversation focused on their latest work and hip-hop’s ever-present influence on modern art.
Photo_Apr_15_2024__10_56_55_AM image“The Last Stair” emerges as a collaborative effort between two Chicago artists whose latest endeavors revolve around the concept of reclamation. Star Line Gallery represents a space both celebratory and vulnerable, providing a platform for Black artists to recount their narratives and share their rich histories. The forthcoming project features works created in partnership with visual artists across the Diaspora, redefining the notion of ‘album art’ and creating compelling conversations and meditations on Black life. The reclamation of the past is a powerful source of inspiration for Chance, whose Star Line Gallery works “Child of God” (collaboration with Gabonese artist and painter Naïla Opiangah), “A Bar About A Bar” (collaboration with Chicago-based painter Nikko Washington and filmmaker Troy Gueno), “The Highs & The Lows” feat. Joey Bada$$ (collaboration with Gabonese photographer Yannis Davy Guibinga), and “YAH Know” (collaboration with Chicago-based visual artist Mía Lee) have been showcased at art institutions around the world including EXPO Chicago, Art Basel, Chicago’s Museum of Contemporary Art (MCA), The Art Institute of Chicago, and Los Angeles’ Museum Of Contemporary Art (MOCA).
Thelonious, the first African American oil painter to graduate from the Florence Academy of Art, is celebrated internationally for his pioneering technique of ‘Blackwashing’ to reclaim narratives by prominently featuring Black figures in his art. His recent portrayal of Emmett Till and his father, Louis, garnered global attention at Art Basel. In his latest work, “The Last Stair,” Thelonious continues this tradition by utilizing Judeo-Christian themes to challenge the worn-out tropes of the Western canon. Informed by his identity as an African American and his sense of being underrepresented in conventional Christian art, Thelonious presents the birth of Christ in a way that speaks directly to the diaspora, challenging prevailing mono-cultural norms.

2003 And 2012: The Genesis Of Love

Long before becoming husband and wife, Chance the Rapper and Kirsten’s romance was already bubbling. Before there were flashing cameras and sold-out shows, the couple were on the rise. Chance and Kirsten’s paths first crossed in 2003 at an office party organized by the real estate firm where his mother was employed.

Little did they know, destiny had woven their lives to meet again almost a decade later. Almost 10 years after their first meeting, they crossed paths once more at the South by Southwest Film Festival in Austin, Texas. The two subsequently rekindled their connection upon returning to their hometown of Chicago shortly thereafter.

It appears that the couple began their relationship in early 2013. In an interview featured in Oyster‘s September 2013 edition, Chance The Rapper asserted that he and Kirsten had been in a relationship for several years, prompting his manager, Pat Corcoran, to clarify that they had only been dating for six months. Nonetheless, in 2015, Chance and Kirsten welcomed their first child together. Their daughter Kensli Bennett was born on September 20, 2015.

As with any relationship, Chance the Rapper and his wife’s journey has seen its share of highs and lows. In February 2016, the couple broke up, and matters took a significant turn. As per records acquired by the Chicago Tribune, Kirsten purportedly submitted legal paperwork petitioning the court to officially recognize Chance as Kensli’s father and to maintain sole guardianship of their daughter. She also reportedly requested Chance to cover child support expenses, encompassing costs associated with pregnancy, delivery, and legal fees. This marked the onset of a custody and child support dispute. However, they eventually reached a court-mediated agreement that prioritized their daughter’s well-being in early 2017. Subsequently, the couple settled their differences out of court and reunited.

2018: Chance The Rapper Asks Kirsten To Be His Wife

On July 4, 2018, Chance proposed to Kirsten during a backyard barbecue surrounded by family and friends. The moment was captured on video and shared with the world, showcasing Chance’s genuine love and admiration for Kirsten. It was a heartfelt declaration of commitment, marking a pivotal moment in their journey together. During an appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, Chance confessed that it was fellow rapper Offset who encouraged him to propose. “I met ‘Set at a party at French Montana’s house,” he said. “We were all in the backyard, and he pulled me to the side, and he told me that he and Cardi B had just got married in the backyard. He was like, ‘Yo, you need to take care of business,’ and I came back home, and I proposed two months later.”

The couple officially tied the knot on March 9, 2019, exchanging vows in a beautiful ceremony at the Resort at Pelican Hill in Newport Beach, California. Their daughter, Kensli, served as the flower girl. Also, several notable celebrity guests such as Kim Kardashian, Kanye West, and Dave Chappelle graced the occasion. Months after their wedding, the couple shared news that they had welcomed their second child, Marli, into the world.

Following Marli’s arrival, Chance The Rapper made the heartfelt decision to postpone his tour to prioritize spending quality time with his wife and kids. He explained his decision in an Instagram post, stating: “When Kensli was born, I went on tour 2 weeks later and missed some of the most important milestones in her life, but more importantly I was absent when her mother needed me the most. At this point as a husband and father of two, I realize that I can’t make that mistake again. I need to be as helpful and available as possible to my wife in these early months of raising Kensli and Marli.”

2023: A Controversial Spectacle

In April 2023, Chance The Rapper went to Jamaica to partake in their vibrant Carnival celebrations. While immersing himself in the local customs, he was caught on video engaging in a dance with a woman. Specifically, he allowed the woman to twerk on him, as he playfully tapped her butt while holding onto his drink. This incident sparked a debate on the internet regarding its appropriateness, especially since Chance was a married man. Shortly after, Corley shared a quote from Maya Angelou’s Letter To My Daughter which many interpreted as a public response to the debacle. However, a representative for the couple spoke to TMZ and assured everyone that all was good between the two. “Everyone has their moments, but they’re all good,” they said.

For at least the last six years, the biggest knock against Chance The Rapper by his detractors was that he was too big of a “wife guy” — especially on his (unfairly maligned) album, The Big Day. It looks like whenever he releases his next album, Star Line Gallery, they won’t have that to use as a bludgeon; Chance and his wife Kirsten Corley announced today that they are getting a divorce after a trial separation.

In a joint statement posted on their Instagram Stories, Chance and Kirsten wrote:

After a period of separation, the two of us have arrived at the decision to part ways.

We came to this decision amicably and with gratitude for the time we spent together. God has blessed us with two beautiful daughters who we will continue to raise together.

We kindly ask for privacy and respect as we navigate this transition.

Thank you

-Chance & Kirsten

As noted in the statement, the now-former couple shares two daughters, Kensli Bennett and Marli Grace Bennett. For what it’s worth, Chance will have plenty to keep him busy for the foreseeable future; in addition to his coaching duties on The Voice, he will presumably go on tour for Star Line Gallery, which has a tentative release date of this spring.

The haters have won; love is dead. I hope you dorks are happy now.

Chance The Rapper & Kirsten Corley Divorce News Comes “After A Period Of Separation”

Chance the Rapper and Kirsten Corley tied the knot on March 9, 2019. Though they make a beautiful couple, their union has been called into question on more than one occasion. In late 2022, the couple was in the headlines as social media sleuths uncovered an NSFW video involving a transgender person in the “Cocoa Butter Kisses” hitmaker’s likes. Corley clapped back at trolls in wake of that drama, and around the same time the recording artist confirmed that he had to put in serious work to keep his marriage strong during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Despite all the praise the Rapper has given his other half in his music through the years, his actions in real-time have sometimes suggested he still likes to be free and have fun. While at Carnival in 2023, a video of the 30-year-old being twerked on by a bodacious woman while his wife was nowhere to be seen went viral. This caused tensions to rise between them, and people began speculating that trouble was afoot in paradise. It seems they might’ve been right, as Corley confirmed her split from Chance on Wednesday (April 3) via Instagram.

“After a period of separation, the two of us have arrived at a decision to part ways,” the mother of two wrote. “We came to this decision amicably and with gratitude for the time we spent together. God has blessed us with two beautiful daughters who we will continue to raise together. We kindly ask for privacy and respect as we navigate this transition. Thank you,” Corley’s statement concluded.

It seems Chance the Rapper’s life is all about change lately, and the themes are even coming through in his music. In a snippet shared online last month, the 30-year-old speaks about Americans starting a revolution rather than voting in the upcoming election. Read all about that at the link below, and let us know if you’re surprised about Kirsten Corley’s divorce announcement in the comments.

Chance The Rapper And Denzel Curry Pay Tribute To ‘Dragon Ball’ Creator Akira Toriyama Following His Death

Rappers’ love for manga runs deep. So when news that Akira Toriyama, the creator of the beloved series Dragon Ball, died was released online, it shocked the music world. Since the announcement back on March 7, fans around the globe have poured out their love for Toriyama’s work online.

A few of those lifelong supporters included rappers Chance The Rapper and Denzel Curry. The news left The Voice judge and “Yah Know” rapper lost for words. In a gallery uploaded to his official Instagram page, the rapper couldn’t string together a message profound enough to express his sorrow. Instead, he used an array of tearful video clips blended with a few screenshots of the series’ many forms (video games, TV shows, and comics) to speak for him. Within the assortment, Chance included an image of the late visual artist.

On the other hand, Curry penned a lengthy note in his Instagram Stories (captured by HipHopDX, a fellow subsidiary of Warner Music Group) to pay tribute to the Manga legend.

“Akira Toriyama’s work has inspired me to be the best artist I can be,” he wrote. “Growing up in Carol City [, Florida] with a house full of brothers, his work was always something me and my siblings bonded over. His work on ‘Dragon Ball,’ ‘Dragon Ball Z,’ ‘GT,’ and ‘Super’ made me want to be the best version of myself because Goku was the person that kids looked up to.”

Tributes will continue to pour in from musicians.

Toriyama’s cause of death has not been officially announced. However, according to a fan page, the 68-year-old officially passed away on March 1 as the result of acute subdural hematoma.

Latto, Ludacris & DJ Khaled Join “Rhythm + Flow” Season 2 As Judges

Netflix’s hip-hop sensation, Rhythm + Flow, is making a triumphant return after a five-year hiatus. Promising a second season that’s set to elevate the stakes and amplify the beats. The show, which previously anointed Grammy-nominated MC D Smoke as its inaugural champion and boasted guest judges like Cardi B, Chance The Rapper, and T.I., is shaking up its lineup for the upcoming season. However, it’s a pretty significant change this time around. The new panel of judges features none other than the dynamic trio of Latto, DJ Khaled, and Ludacris. But wait, there’s more! Eminem will step in as a special guest judge during the “Battle Round” competition.

In addition to this star-studded judging panel, Netflix’s VP of nonfiction series, Brandon Riegg, expressed the excitement surrounding the evolution of hip-hop. “We are taking things up a notch with a new cast of global hitmakers in our judges and a new pool of undiscovered artists,” he stated. It’s not just about seasoned mentors; it’s about the fusion of legendary insight from Ludacris, Latto, and DJ Khaled, coupled with Eminem’s unique brand of advice.

Moreover, the show is one that has changed peoples’ lives and has provided a platform for success. D Smoke, the artist who won the first season for example, has seen heights in his career. He was even nominated for two Grammys: best new artist and best rap album. “I’ve trained myself to not look too far into things until they materialize,” D Smoke told Billboard “I figured if I didn’t raise my expectations too much then there’s no real disappointment to experience. But in doing so, once the news came I was through the roof. Literally, my voice is tired today from all the yelling I’ve been doing.”

Furthermore, Riegg highlighted the transformative mentorship that has taken place in previous seasons, catapulting contestants to global recognition. The anticipation is palpable as these industry titans gear up to guide a fresh wave of talent on their journeys. Chance The Rapper’s Long-Teased Sophomore Album ‘Star Line Gallery’ Now Has A Tentative Release Date

Chance The Rapper has been riding on the high of celebrating the tenth anniversary of his groundbreaking mixtape, Acid Rap. However, the “Yah Know” musician isn’t ignoring fans’ requests for new music. Yesterday (December 23), Chance revealed that his long-teased sophomore album, Star Line Gallery, has a tentative release date.

“My album’s coming out next spring,” yelled the entertainer during his Instagram Live broadcast.

When asked by his friend in the room if it was an exclusive announcement, Chance joked that there weren’t many people to share the news with. “It’s cool; there are only 500 people in here. No one logs on when I’m doing good work,” laughed the rapper.

In June, Chance discussed the forthcoming project with Audacy’s Check In podcast host, Julia. “It’s one of my proudest projects in terms of writing and artistic vision. There’s an immense amount of work to be done with it,” said Chance.

He went on to add, “But it’s cool ’cause I feel like with the love and intentionality that goes into making each physical art piece gives me an opportunity to show people in these museum spaces what I’m working on as I go, the highs and the lows, kind of like a preview to the project.”

Chance The Rapper’s debut album, The Big Day, was released in 2019.
