Memphis Bleek Claims ASAP Mob Is The Modern Day Roc-A-Fella

There were lots of New York crews fighting for hip-hop supremacy in the 2000s. Ruff Ryders, Dipset, and Terror Squad all made legitimate strides, but Roc-A-Fella ultimately came out on top. It helped that the Roc had the biggest solo star of the era in Jay-Z. Memphis Bleek was one of the rappers who held it down alongside Hov, so he got to see the absolute best that NY had to offer. It consequently carries a lot of weight when someone like him praises a crew from a younger generation.

Memphis Bleek recently discussed the lineage of New York hip-hop during a recent appearance on Fresh Pair. The rapper was asked about the lasting impact of Roc-A-Fella Records, and he claimed that nobody has surpassed it. “Some people still try to create that Roc wave,” he explained. “You got a couple people that came close.” The one Bleek has been most impressed with has been ASAP Mob. Apparently, he’s an enormous fan of what the Harlem collective has done over the last decade.

Memphis Bleek Praised ASAP Mob For Coming “Close”

“The closest team that I thought was gonna do it was the ASAP crew,” the rapper noted. “I can’t front that, they all was shakin.” It’s easy to see why Bleek was so impressed. ASAP Mob helped to popularize “cloud rap” in the mainstream courtesy of ASAP Rocky’s 2011 mixtape, Live. Love. ASAP. Rocky went on to become a bonafide pop star off the success of singles like “Goldie” and “F*ckin’ Problemz.” Ferg was the next one up, and he bolstered the Mob’s street credentials. ASAP Mob’s aesthetic also carried over to the world of fashion.

ASAP Mob agrees with Memphis Bleek’s sentiment. During a Billboard interview, the crew referenced Roc-A-Fella as a major influence. “We look up to Wu-Tang Clain, Dipset, G-Unit, Roc-A-Fella, all them n**gas before us, but we’re the best, bro,” ASAP Rocky claimed. “You can’t be mad at us thinking we’re the best.” ASAP Ant doubled down. “We, like we were one of the crews that brought it back to Wu-Tang, Roc-A-Fella Records,” he added. “We provided the wave to the new generation.”

ASAP Ferg’s Name Change Has Fans Theorizing That He Left ASAP Mob

ASAP Ferg is the second-biggest member of ASAP Mob. Rocky will always be the biggest, since he broke through first, but Ferg proved that the crew had staying power. He’s been the most consistent member of ASAP Mob in terms of output and guest appearances. At least, he was. The rapper recently put out a new single, “MDMX,” and fans have noticed that he’s credited as “Ferg” and not “ASAP Ferg.” This has sparked a tidal wave of speculation that he’s left the crew for good.

The name change comes after years of struggle between Ferg and ASAP Mob. In 2020, various crew members implied that the rapper was no longer a member. ASAP Nast clarified this point on X (formerly Twitter), however, by stating that Ferg was very much involved with their musical output. He put out his next album, Floor Seats II, under the name ASAP Ferg, so everything seemed to be fine.

Ferg has been relatively quiet on the music front during the last couple years, which is what makes the name change so jarring. This is the first time Ferg has been officially credited without the “ASAP” prefix. A casual fan would be able to infer that this is a significant change.

Ferg Insists He Still A Part Of ASAP Mob

Significant, but not as damning as it may appear. Ferg actually announced that he would be shortening his name back in October 2021. He issued a statement through Roc Nation, clarifying his plan and letting fans know that the name change does not reflect turmoil with ASAP Mob. “Ferg is very much still part of the Mob, and is A$AP Ferg within A$AP Mob,” the statement read. “Ferg as an individual artist and with his solo career is Ferg.”

Ferg’s actions since making the announcement have supported this. He reunited with ASAP Rocky to preview a snippet of an unreleased song on Instagram. Fans are hoping he shows up on Rocky’s new album, Don’t Be Dumb. ASAP Ferg also told High Snobiety that he could never envision a time in which he wasn’t involved with the Mob. “I don’t think there’s no breaking up of the Mob,” he explained. “It’s like, once you’re in the Mob, you can’t get out. This is blood in, blood out… You can never get out of the mob. So that’s not even a thing.”

ASAP Rocky Reunites With ASAP Ferg To Preview New Music

The ASAP Mob would not have blown up without ASAP Rocky and ASAP Ferg. The former was the pop star who crossed over and eventually started a family with Rihanna. The latter was the eccentric rapper who embodied the crew’s singular aesthetic. They dominated the 2010s with classic singles like “Work” and “Shabba.” The 2020s, however, has been a different story. Rocky and Ferg have embarked on two different paths. Thankfully, all that is about to change. ASAP Mob’s two biggest members are back in the studio.

On May 8, ASAP Rocky got on Instagram Live to tease new music. The rapper has been hyping up his comeback album, Don’t Be Dumb, as a star-studded event, but what fans didn’t know is what Ferg was going along for the ride. Metaphorically and literally, in the case of Rocky’s Instagram. The two rappers can be seen sitting in a car and playing music that they just recorded. Ferg’s verse dominates what we hear of the unreleased song, but both men can be seen bobbing their heads. The production evokes a classic ASAP Mob sound, with frenetic drums and massive bass hits.

ASAP Rocky And Ferg Listened To New Music In The Car

This is cause for celebration for anyone who grew up listening to both rappers. ASAP Rocky hasn’t put out an album since 2018, and Ferg’s relationship with the rest of ASAP Mob has been strained since he was reportedly kicked out of the group in 2020. Ferg detailed his issues with the group in the song “Big ASAP.” (ASAP Nast invited Ferg back to the group months later, but it’s unclear if he accepted the invite). Rocky and Ferg, meanwhile, haven’t been on a song together since “Pups” in 2019.

ASAP Rocky spoke on his relationship with Ferg during a 2020 episode of Drink Champs. He assured fans that things were good between them, even if they weren’t collaborating as often as they used to. “Everything’s lovely, man,” he asserted. “We all blessed to be here. Everybody doing they thing and everybody’s eclectically kind of like progressively being creative, doing they own thing… The hardest thing to do is to keep a group together and sh*t like that. That’s the hardest thing, bro.” It looks all the drama has been worked on, and fans will getting the music they’ve craved for so long.

A$AP Rocky & A$AP Relli Pause Civil Lawsuit Over 2021 Shooting

A$AP Rocky and A$AP Relli have agreed to put a pause on their trial. As we previously reports, Relli is suing Rocky after claiming that the “Fashion Killa” rapper shot him in 2021. According to reports, both parties have agreed to halt the civil trial due to Rocky’s criminal case.

The Harlem rapper is charged with two criminal counts of assault with a semiautomatic firearm for the incident. Rocky would reportedly have to invoke his 5th amendment in his trial with Relli to avoid statements that could incriminate him in the criminal prosecution.

Rocky was charged for the shooting last year after exiting an airplane with his pop star girlfriend, Rihanna. Relli went to the police just before Rocky’s detainment to name the star as the triggerman in the 2021 shooting. The A$AP Mob member claims Rocky fired four shots at him following a heated argument.

Back in September, Rocky responded to Relli’s criminal claims against him. “Relli’s injuries were caused solely, directly and proximately by the negligent or intentional acts or omissions” of someone else. The documents also state that that Relli “failed to exercise reasonable care to avoid the consequences of harm.” The “DMB” rapper’s lawyer Joe Tacopina called the lawsuit “an extortion” attempt.

“Rocky didn’t commit a crime,” Tacopina said. “It was an extortion attempted by a former associate, who threatened to make false criminal accusations if Rocky didn’t pay him. Rocky didn’t commit a crime.” The news comes weeks after Rihanna shared the first photos of her and Rocky’s seven month old son.
