Hollywood Foreign Press Association President Was Left “Shocked” And “Upset” With Jerrod Carmichael’s Golden Globes Monologue

Jerrod Carmichael is set to host the 80th Golden Globe Awards in January.

Last week, comedian Jerrod Carmichael shocked audience members with his opening monologue for the 2023 Golden Globes. According to an insider, the president of the HFPA, Helen Hoehne, was “shocked” and “upset” with Carmichael’s monologue.

“The whole thing was so awkward and uncomfortable,” one insider said. Another added, “The show needs to be fun, and it didn’t feel fun.” Another simply said: “What did you expect?”

In the monologue, he explained how he got to host the awards show, saying it was due to him being black. He also called out the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) for not having a Golden Globes last year because they came under fire for not having a single Black person on the board.

“I am your host, Jerrod Carmichael, and I’ll tell you why I’m here…I’m here ‘cause I’m Black,” the 35-year-old comedian said. “This show, the Golden Globe Awards, did not air last year because the Hollywood Foreign Press Association—which I won’t say they were a racist organization, but they didn’t have a single Black member until George Floyd died. So, do with that information what you will.”

He went on to say that he was offered $500,000 to host the awards show and Hoehne wanted to meet with Carmichael to talk about the recent diverse initiatives the HFPA instituted in light of their controversy. The comedian called Hoehne’s meeting a “trap” and declined her invitation. Sources also say that Hoehne was “consoled” near the ballroom bar that night.

Hoehne wasn’t the only person upset with what Carmichael had to say. Whitney Houston’s estate, as well as many people on social media, were angered by the comedian’s Whitney Houston joke. Carmichael had said that the place where the awards ceremony took place, the Beverly Hilton Hotel, was the same place where Whitney Houston died in 2011. In response, Whitney’s sister-in-law, Pat Houston, said the joke was in “poor taste.”

Whitney Houston’s Estate Upset At Joke Jerrod Carmichael Made About Late Singer At Golden Globes

Jerrod Carmichael is set to host the 80th Golden Globe Awards in January.

Jerrod Carmichael stirred a little bit of controversy over his hosting gig at the 2023 Golden Globes. His monologue about the racism behind the Golden Globes and the Hollywood Foreign Press left many in the audience quiet, and while his other jokes about Will Smith and telling the crowd to “shut the f**k up” garnered laughs, one joke didn’t sit well with others.

During the broadcast, the 35-year-old comedian made a joke about the late legendary singer Whitney Houston.

“Alright you guys, we are back, we are pressed for time but they wanted me to shout out the venue we’re in,” Carmichael said following a commercial break. “So we are here, live, from the hotel that killed Whitney Houston, the Beverly Hilton, you guys—so uh, that’s very exciting.”

Pat Houston, Whitney’s longtime manager and the sole executor of her estate, told TMZ that she denounced the joke and said it was “in poor taste.”

“The Whitney Houston Estate is disappointed in the joke, and felt it was in poor taste.”

Whitney Houston was found unresponsive in a bathtub in the Beverly Hilton on February 11, 2012. The L.A. County Coroner’s Office said attributed her death to drowning and the “effects of atherosclerotic heart disease and cocaine use.”

Houston’s estate was not the only ones mad at Carmichael’s joke. Many people even took to social media to slam the comedian for the joke as well.

Tyrese Is Beyond Will Smith Jokes Following Golden Globes Jabs

Tyrese isn’t letting any jokes or commentary steer him away from his Will Smith support. A day after Smith was the butt of a Eddie Murphy joke at the Golden Globes, Tyrese hit Instagram to ask people to move on already.

Eddie Murphy attended the 2023 Golden Globes, where he received the Cecil B. DeMille Award for his accomplishments in the cinema industry. Murphy provided three pieces of advice for aspiring entertainment business newcomers during his acceptance speech.

“Pay your taxes, mind your business,” Murphy said to the audience as they listened silently to the words of wisdom from the comedy legend. “And keep Will Smith’s wife’s name out your f****g mouth,” Eddie Murphy said, recalling to the Oscars slap moment.

Additionally, host Jerrod Carmichael said that they had given Will Smith the “Best Portrayal Of Masculinity On Television” award earlier in the break.

“Just some quick housekeeping stuff,” Carmichael began. “While we were on commercial, we actually presented Will Smith with the Rock Hudson award for “Best Portrayal Of Masculinity On Television. So please give it up for Will Smith, you guys!”

Following the show, Tyrese shared an image of himself with Will Smith calling for an end of all the jokes.

“I’m still team WILL SMITH there’s nobody on this earth that will ever influence me to ever have a change of heart towards the BIGGEST INFLUENCE in my life,” Tyrese wrote. “I’m just saying man…. Move on already I just watched ‘EMANCIPATION’ for the 3rd time I just can’t believe how masterful this overall movie is.”

Rihanna Laughs At Jerrod Carmichael’s Album Delay Approval

The Golden Globes are the talk of Hollywood today, and Rihanna has been a particular highlight. Last night (January 10), the industry’s elite gathered together for an awkward ceremony hosted by comedian Jerrod Carmichael. From the onset, Carmichael wasn’t holding back as he tackled issues of the Globes’ racism controversy and Hollywood’s sordid scandals.

In attendance was Rihanna with boyfriend A$AP Rocky by her side. The new parents have been enjoying time with their baby boy, but occasionally, the couple steps out for a night on the town. The “Umbrella” icon’s appearance didn’t go unnoticed by Carmichael.

When the host saw the singer in the audience, he couldn’t help but mention her much-anticipated next album.

“I’m gonna say something controversial,” Carmichael began. “I will actually get in trouble for this. Rihanna, you take all the time you want on that album, girl. Don’t let these fools on the internet pressure you into nothing!”

Rihanna found it all amusing because to call the messages she’s received “pressure” is an understatement. We haven’t received a studio album from the singer since 2016’s Anti, and her fans have been unrelenting in their requests for a project.

However, Rihanna has teased that she’s in the studio working on new music.

Rihanna Loved Jerrod Carmichael’s ‘Very Controversial’ Joke About Her Upcoming Album At The Golden Globes

At the 2023 Golden Globes last night (January 10), Rihanna’s Black Panther: Wakanda Forever song “Lift Me Up” didn’t take home the award for Best Original Song, Motion Picture. She still stole the show, though, by getting multiple shout-outs during the broadcast. That included one from host Jerrod Carmichael, who cracked a joke that Rihanna fans are probably wishing he hadn’t.

Addressing Rihanna between awards, Carmichael said, “You know what? Honestly, only because I see Rihanna is here, and I’m gonna say… I’m gonna say something very controversial that… I will actually get in trouble for this: Rihanna, you take all the time you want on that album, girl. Don’t let these fools on the internet pressure you into nothing!”

As Carmichael got to the part about his comment being “controversial,” Rihanna smiled as she waited for the punchline. When that dropped, she gave a laugh and a clap, putting her hands on her face and saying something to the people around her.

As for those fools on the internet, they don’t seem to feel the same as Carmichael. One Rihanna fan wrote, “Who this [clown] Jerrod Carmicheal calling a fool? Talking bout ‘don’t let these fools on the internet pressure you into nothing.’ Rihanna owes us that album and we need it ASAP!” Even the Golden Globes themselves got in on the moment, tweeting, “Jerrod Carmichael may want you to take your time but we’d like that album ASAP.”

Jerrod Carmichael Tells Golden Globes Audience To ‘Shut The F**k Up,’ Twitter Reacts

Screen Shot 2023 01 11 at 1.00.48 AM

Comedian Jerrod Carmichael hosted the 2023 Golden Globes last night and became one of the more memorable hosts in recent years. Carmichael apparently wasn’t having it when it came to the crowd not being quiet and continuing to talk over him, so he told the audience to “shut the f**k up.”

“Yo, yo, yo,” Carmichael said, trying to quiet the audience down. “I didn’t think I’d spend this much time telling y’all to shut the f**k up,” he added. “Everybody relax, its a live show here. Shut up!”

Twitter, much like the audience, found what the 35-year-old comedian said to be amusing. Some Twitter users added that despite their amusement, it was about to be Carmichael’s first and last time hosting the prestigious award show.

Carmichael also caught attention for his opening monologue where he began by saying “let me tell you why I’m here. I’m here because I’m Black.” In the nearly 7-minute monologue, Carmichael told the story of how he came to be the award show’s host, and how he felt a “moral dilemma” because he knew he was only given the hosting gig because of his race, and because there was no Golden Globes ceremony last year because there were no Black members of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association.

You can check out Carmichael’s monologue below.

Twitter Reacts To Jerrod Carmichael Telling Golden Globes Audience To Shut Up

The 80th Golden Globe Awards went down in Beverly Hills, California on Tuesday evening and Jerrod Carmichael definitely made it a night to remember. Hosting the award show, the 35-year-old made it clear on stage that he wasn’t tolerating the excessive noise, and directly told the crowd to shut up.

“Yo, yo, yo,” Carmichael said, trying to quiet the attendants down. “I didn’t think I’d spend this much time telling y’all to shut the f**k up.”

After being met with mild laughter, the comedian continued, “Everybody relax. This is a live show here. Shut up!”

Though this was Carmichael’s first time hosting the Golden Globes, one Twitter user joked online that it could also be his last, saying, “Bout to be the first and last time Jerrod Carmichael host The Golden Globe.”

“Jerrod Carmichael dressed in his “colors are blush and bashful” yelling at the most famous people to “shut up” like he’s your parents trying to hear the TV has me howling,” another wrote.

Carmichael hosted “Saturday Night Live” last year shortly after coming out in his HBO special “Rothanial.”

In a sit-down with GQ, the stand-up comic opened up about his sexuality, saying that “secret sex is the most fun sex, unfortunately. But, no more of that. Now I’m open and able to show emotion or show affection.”

“I don’t run from it,” he continued, adding, “I mean, there’s definitely still walls and I’ve still got to figure shit out, but the funniest shit on Raya is the girls that I matched with that I never responded to, a couple of them hit me and were like, ‘Ohhhh, okay. I get it now.’”

The North Carolina native has added hosting to his resume, but he also told the magazine that he doesn’t want to wear too many hats.

“I think you should show a discernible skill and be good at something. I hate when a female singer has a decent voice but they suck at dancing. B***h, stop moving. Be like Adele, just stand there. Whitney Houston made ‘I Wanna Dance With Somebody,’ and she can’t dance! But who cares, because her voice was great,” he shared.

“I think [standup] is a natural way of communicating for me. I think I probably communicate better, in many ways, on stage than off, and can be more honest.”
