Open Mike Eagle has been a unique talent in the underground for years now, and his talents never fail to impress. Moreover, he just released a new single titled “WFLD 32” alongside Eshu Tune (better known as Hannibal Buress), as well as frequent rap collaborators Video Dave and STILL RIFT. Overall, this is quite a woozy, often comical, but nonetheless engaging piece of abstract-tinged hip-hop with a lot of sharp lines and descriptions. Most importantly, each MC comes through with their own mood and approach, whether it’s in lyrical or performance terms. In addition, the cut boasts production from Kenny Segal, who recently teamed up with billy woods for the excellent LP Maps.

Furthermore, the beat here is led by some ghostly and dusty piano key loops, enveloping the track in a hazy cloud. With warm and similarly lo-fi boom-bap drums with a slower tempo, it creates a languid but laidback atmosphere. Of course, sonic pallets like this mean that the lyrics take center stage, and the MCs here don’t slouch on that metric. Open Mike Eagle talks about his desire to be the best in the game and proves his chops with intricate rhyme schemes and clever turns of phrase. Tyla Yaweh Unleashes New Album, “Heart Full Of Rage 2”

Tyla Yaweh has a lot of musical talents and styles, and there’s no better indicator of that than his new album, Heart Full of Rage 2. Moreover, the 16-track project boasts forays into indie rock, rage music, drum and bass, alternative, trap, and more, making it quite a dynamic listen from front to back. Of course, each listener will have their own specific niche of the rapper and singer’s styles that they latch onto. However, the album experience is actually a fun ride to go on regardless of whether you just like one or a couple of his sounds. Kendrick Lamar’s Lollapalooza Day Two Set Had All The Hits & No Misses

Kendrick Lamar is a mainstay at huge festivals these days, performing at Governors Ball, Bonnaroo, and now Lollapalooza. Moreover, he wrapped up Day Two (Friday August 4) of the Chicago festival at the T-Mobile stage in Grant Park. Of course, the Compton rap titan came through with a collection of some of his greatest and most successful hits. All the way from his breakout album Section.80 to the recent Mr. Morale & The Big Steppers, everyone had something to latch onto during his set. What’s more is that this was his first time performing at Lollapalooza in ten years, making for a very special moment.

Furthermore, the pgLang MC recognized it as such during various points of the show. “Is anybody alive right now?” Kendrick Lamar asked the crowd after performing “The Heart Part 5,” “N95,” and “ELEMENT.” “Chitown, how are you feeling tonight? Make some noise. It’s a special night in a special city. It’s always special when we come out here, it’s always love. I want to make sure you have a good time from start to finish.” “Until next time Chicago, I will be back,” he expressed as he closed the night out with the incomparable “Alright” after going ten minutes over his set time.

Since he started about 15 minutes late, there was not a soul who complained about his extended stay. With such a high-quality and versatile slew of excellent songs, who in their right mind would? Kendrick Lamar brought the wooziness of “A.D.H.D.,” the boasting on “Backseat Freestyle,” the funk of “King Kunta,” the smoothness of “LOYALTY.,” and the tension on “Count Me Out,” among many others. In addition, his live band and dancers elevated the show and made the experience much more unique than your typical festival headliner.

Meanwhile, amid teases of new music, these performances add to the 36-year-old’s mystique. We saw him a lot on the festival circuit, but it begs some curiosity as to whether there’s a deeper reason to do so. Cousin Stizz Is Flying “Solo” On New Single

Cousin Stizz is keeping the releases coming this year, following up his last single “Coming For Everything” featuring Tony Shhnow. Moreover, he just released the track “Solo” with an accompanying music video, bringing back some warm and woozy West Coast vibes both in production and flow. Of course, the Massachusetts MC has played with this sound a lot before, but it always takes new listeners aback when they tap into the Boston native and hear something that sounds like it could’ve come out of L.A. Regardless, it’s a vibrant and enjoyable display of Stizz’s measured and syncopated flow, plus his ear for breezy beats that could soundtrack a sunny day.

Furthermore, reverb-heavy and funky guitar strums lead the way, with too many effects on it to even notice it’s a string instrument. In fact, it could be a synth, but when it comes to keys, there are other soft piano leads throughout the track that overtake it melodically. In addition, there’s the trademark bouncy bass hits, a sharp percussion pattern, and a great bed for Cousin Stizz to flex his flow on. While he cycles through a few different schemes, it always keeps its focus on the individual bar rather than stringing them all together perfectly. Overall, it’s a pretty dynamic performance, and that’s exactly what makes it stand out when compared to other instrumentals and songs structures in this vein.

Jordan Ward & 6LACK Shine On A Tender & Nostalgic New Single, “MUSTARD”

Jordan Ward is one of the most exciting voices coming up across any genre, although to call him on the come-up sounds unfitting. After all, following cosigns from the likes of Tyler, The Creator and this new collab single with 6LACK, the 28-year-old is quickly establishing himself as a bright voice with star potential. Moreover, this new track “MUSTARD” highlights Ward’s penchant for sincere and subtle songwriting filled with detail on closer inspection. It’s an acoustic guitar-led cut with dry but warm percussion that’s a perfect soundtrack for a day around the park. Lyrically, though, it centers around rebirth and change, making for a sweetly melancholy song with a lot of emotive weight behind it.

What’s more is that the vocal embellishments throughout, like background vocals and ad-libs, add a lot of atmosphere to “MUSTARD.” Jordan Ward sings with a slightly pitched-up voice that fits its reflections on the past quite well, while 6LACK keeps his signature soulful drawl. However, even though the track might sound simple at first, a few elements reveal the fleshed-out structure beneath. For example, wavy and low-toned synthesizers close the track out, and more effect-heavy guitar chords accentuate the chorus. Overall, it’s all held together by a sticky and distinct vocal melody for the chorus that makes for one of the catchiest and most tender ones you’ll hear all week.

JT, Kali Uchis, and El Alfa recently teamed up for a new song, “Muñekita,” and it’s exactly the reggaetón-heavy banger that such a collab suggests. What’s more is that its infectious rhythm and charismatic performances clearly inspire something in the City Girl’s hips- and so many others. Moreover, she recently uploaded a video on social media of her dancing along to one of the track’s slower “dembow” moments. In the clip, the Florida MC moves her hips slowly and sensually to the rhythm, leaving a lot of impressed fans in the comments, albeit some critics, too. “We can’t be listening to the same song she’s moving to,” one user jokingly wrote under the clip.

No matter what you think of those moves, you can’t deny that this is the kind of track that you don’t really care how you look when you dance to it. Furthermore, its different tempo switches and pitch-shifting plucks keep the energy on high all throughout. In addition, it’s just great for fans of hip-hop and Latin music alike to have another crossover banger in the repertoire. It might fit well within his established style, but the tragic end of his career means that there was so much more left in the vault to develop and expand upon. With that context in mind, tracks like these only serve to further cement his legacy today, and “I’m The Reason” does so while speaking to his idiosyncrasy as an MC.

Furthermore, the instrumental here is a solid combination of dark, minimal percussion and brighter, more atmospheric synth pads and key leads. While we’ve heard bounces like these before, it’s still welcome in a rap landscape in which Los Angeles is not one of the sonic zeitgeists. While there are too many highlights and amazing moments to name, “DELRESTO (ECHOES)” certainly stands out as one of its most notable and shocking moments. With assistance from two revered vocal titans in Beyoncé and Bon Iver, this makes for one of the best moments on the LP on first listen due to the reveal of its hidden features. In addition, it features production from Travis, Bey, James Blake, Allen Ritter, Hit-Boy, Mike Dean, and umru, making for a vibrant and progressive instrumental.

In fact, it might remind many listeners of Beyonce’s RENAISSANCE with its house-inspired rhythms and musical aesthetics. However, there’s also something tribal, ritualistic, and almost holy about the always tense but never fully explosive progression of “DELRESTO (ECHOES).” That might be a turn-off for some, but the constant build-up feels more like a journey of peace than a throwaway, half-baked idea for a song. Beyonce and Bon Iver both stun with their passionate vocal performances, and Travis Scott switches from melodic flows to rapid-fire bars with ease. With multiple synth layers, additional instruments, and variations throughout the song, the track feels complete without exaggerating its opulence.

Ahead of his upcoming album AUSTIN, Post Malone just dropped another single from the project titled “Overdrive.” Despite what the song’s title might have you believe, this is actually a softer cut that functions more like a ballad with its instrumentation, tempo, and vocal style. Sure, this is far from the first time that the Texas artist worked with more indie-rock, alt-rock, or even singer-songwriter sounds in his discography. That being said, this is still definitely one of the most overt and well-crafted examples of that in his hit-filled repertoire. On “Overdrive,” Post champions simplicity as his way forward, keeping things short, sweet, and structurally swelling.

Furthermore, on that last point, the track’s melodic and harmonic elements come from some simple piano chords, guitar strumming, and a string arrangement that pops out here and there. As such, the strings are what really elevate “Overdrive” and give it some forward momentum, coming in and out of the mix at various points. Elsewhere, Post Malone’s vocal melody is fitting for this type of track, as is the slinky bassline and melancholy guitar riff. Considering his career trajectory, this hints at a very compelling direction for the 28-year-old’s next full-length, as he fits this ballad mold quite well. His vocals soar without excessive tampering, the chord progression changes are tasteful, and he presented some interesting lyrical themes.
