Today in Hip Hop History: Tupac Shakur Shot and Robbed in Quad Studios 30 Years Ago

tupacshot

It was on this day in Hip Hop history that many may argue that the legend of Thug Life and Tupac Shakur began.

On this date in 1994, the rapper was headed into the building on 7th Avenue in Manhattan that houses Quad Recording Studios with his manager Freddie Moore and friend Randy “Stretch” Walker(RIP) of the Live Squad the day after deliberations for ‘Pac’s rape case. When Tupac and his crew approached the elevator, they were approached by three gunmen who demanded their money and jewelry. Moore and Walker obeyed the commands, but ‘Pac began cursing at the gunmen, resulting in him being shot five times and robbed of $40K worth of jewelry before being dragged into the elevator to safety by Walker.

Many people, including Shakur, have suspected Lil’ Cease, who called ‘Pac from the 8th-floor window before he was shot, Diddy and the late Notorious B.I.G. for the hit/robbery attempt, however, that theory was denied by Cease, Diddy, and B.I.G. and no proof of their involvement has ever surfaced. Others have suspected Brooklyn street legends Jacques “Haitian Jack” Agnant, James “Jimmy Henchmen” Rosemond, and Walter “King Tut” Johnson of being involved in orchestrating the shooting, which hasn’t amount to much more than a great hood fable. One thing is for sure. After the shooting, the relationship between the East Coast and West Coast Hip Hop communities was never the same again.

DJ Scheme Criticizes Benny Blanco’s Input In New Juice WRLD Album

Juice WRLD is a beloved artist who left behind tons of unreleased music. He’s had more posthumous studio releases than albums released when he was alive. The trend of putting out new Juice music came to a close on November 29, though. The rapper’s estate dropped The Party Never Ends. Despite its title, the album is said to be the final Juice WRLD album. Reception has been mixed from fans, but DJ Scheme made it clear that he was not a fan of Juice’s final release. He even called out the producer who worked on the album: Benny Blanco.

DJ Scheme took to Twitter the day the album dropped. There was no beating around the bush when it came to his opinion, either. “Benny was not the man 4 the job sorry,” he wrote in a since-deleted tweet. He didn’t feel the pop superproducer had the right touch when it came to handling Juice WRLD’s sound. Especially since The Party Never Ends is supposed to mark the end of the rapper’s catalog. DJ Scheme may have deleted the initial tweet, but he doubled down on his stance. He tweeted a follow up in which he criticized Blanco even more.

Scheme felt Benny Blanco did not promote the album the way a final Juice WRLD release should have been promoted. “How the hell u help put the album together and don’t post it once,” he asked his fans. He then circled back on the belief that Blanco should not have been consulted. “Benny Shouldn’t Have Touched it,” he added. “All love to Bibby and the team always regardless.” This tweet was subsequently deleted as well.

DJ Scheme and Juice WRLD collaborated multiple times during the latter’s lifetime, so Scheme’s disdain for what he believes is a botch job makes sense. Blanco, on the other hand, did not work with Juice in his lifetime. Scheme is far from the first person who has criticized the new album, though. The artwork for The Party Never Ends was universally derided for its bizarre design and depiction of Juice WRLD. What do you think of the new album? Is DJ Scheme onto something?

Ab-Soul Shares Complicated Feelings On Kendrick Lamar’s “Heart Pt. 6”

Ab-Soul and Kendrick Lamar are TDE legends. They were half of Black Hippy, the label supergroup that never got a proper album. Lamar shed light on Soul, TDE, and the Black Hippy falling out on his new song “Heart Pt. 6.” Dot waxes poetic on the past over a lush SWV sample, and admits to studying Ab-Soul as a means of improving his own rapping skills. The internet was thrilled by the Soulo shout out, and the TDE rapper took to Instagram Live on Thanksgiving to give his two cents on the song.

Ab-Soul started out by showing love to his Black Hippy brother. “I’m very honored,” he asserted. “That’s my brother.” The rapper showed humility by claiming that the talent Dot referenced on “Heart Pt. 6” was something Soul recognized in him at the same time. “I guarantee he didn’t study me as much as I studied him,” Ab-Soul admitted. “He taught me the most as a professional recording artist. I just wanted to make that very clear.” Soul has always been referential to Lamar. This was evidenced by his performance at the “Pop Out” concert on Juneteenth. Instead of performing one of his own songs, Soul crooned the intro to one of Lamar’s Drake disses.

Ab-Soul Claims He’s A Better Rapper Than K. Dot

“Heart Pt. 6” is interesting, though, because Kendrick Lamar implies that Black Hippy’s dissolution was his fault. “I jog my memory, knowin’ Black Hippy didn’t work ’cause of me,” he spit. “Creatively, I moved on with new concepts in reach.” Some fans have interpreted this to mean that Kendrick Lamar outgrow Black Hippy in terms of ability and artistry. The thing is, Ab-Soul does not think Lamar has been able to surpass him. Soulo maintained that he was still untouchable when it comes to rhymes.

“I am the B.O.A.T,” he asserted. “I am the best rapper, that’s it. Ask anyone.” It’s a bold statement, but Ab-Soul maintains that he is not being egotistical. He simply believes that nobody is touching his pen, Kendrick Lamar included. “I say that humbly,” he noted. “It’s not from a place of arrogance. I really do this.” Ab-Soul has repeatedly stated that he is the best rapper of all time. Lamar’s co-sign may help to support this claim, but Lamar’s assertion of “wanting it all” on his new album suggests there may be a difference of opinion between brothers.

Diddy Accused Of Dangling Cassie’s Friend Over Hotel Balcony

Diddy list of crimes seemingly grows every week. The Bad Boy founder already has accusations totaling in the triple digits, but he was subjected to another one on November 29. A friend of Diddy’s ex, Cassie, has accused the mogul of physically attacking her on September 26, 2016. She claims that the Bad Boy founder shoved her around a hotel room. From there, she claims Diddy groped, insulted, and threatened her with violence if she dared to resist. The cherry on top? He allegedly called himself the “Devil” while doing so.

Cassie’s friend, Bryana “Bana” Bonglan, previously worked for Diddy. She designed clothes for the mogul prior to the alleged incident. The lawsuit filed by Bonglan’s lawyer claims that Diddy forced himself upon her while the two were in a hotel room. There was physical abuse in the hotel room, but the worst part of the incident occurred on the balcony. Bonglan alleges that Diddy dangled her over the 17th floor balcony in an effort to instill fear in her. “He forcibly groped her breasts, dangled her from a balcony and battered her,” the suit read. “She reasonably believed that Combs’ assault was him making good on his threats.”

Bana Bonglan Claimed Diddy Threatened Her Life

Bonglan claimed that the incident marked the end of several months of harassment. The lawsuit said that the balcony assault was a “culmination of a series of threats, intimidation and violence that colored many of Ms. Bongolan’s interactions. The lawsuit described Diddy’s treatment of the alleged victim as “outrageous and abhorrent conduct” that violated her “fundamental dignity, bodily autonomy, and sense of safety.” Deadline reported that Bonglan is seeking $10 million in damages. She also provided photos of her with Diddy and Cassie in the lawsuit.

Diddy’s attorney’s responded quickly. They dismissed Bonglan’s allegations outright. They also claimed she has been trying to profit from her associate with the mogul for over a year. “Ms. Bangolan (sic) has expressed an intention to sue Mr. Combs and has sought legal representation to pursue her claims,” the statement read. “Mr. Combs firmly denies these serious allegations and remains confident they will ultimately be proven baseless.” Once again, time will tell whether Bonglan’s claims prove to be true.

LeBron James Slights Drake By Rapping To Kendrick Lamar’s “TV Off”

LeBron James and Drake used to be very close. They were the biggest stars in sports and hip hop, respectively, and they understood the trials and tribulations with wearing the crown. The bond they shared has gone out the window in 2024, however. LeBron James, a Los Angeles Laker, has seemingly sold his Drake stock and gone all in on L.A. superstar Kendrick Lamar. Bron went to Lamar’s “Pop Out” concert on Juneteenth, and was seen dancing in the audience. On Friday, the Laker was seen rapping to one of Lamar’s new songs during warm ups.

LeBron James was filmed warming up before a Lakers game on November 29. Business as usual, except for the song blaring through the speakers. “TV Off,” the most viral song off Kendrick Lamar’s new album, GNX, was playing. Bron decided to subtly co-sign the song by rapping along to it while he was shooting. He sang the “Mustard!” chant that has blown up on social media. He also rapped Kendrick Lamar’s hook, which incorporates the title of the song. The instrumental takes over during the next part of the song, but Bron doesn’t miss a beat. He continues to dance while taking shots.

LeBron James Attended Dot’s “Pop Out” Concert

LeBron James loves to show how current he is with new releases. The NBA superstar trying and failing to rap the lyrics to new songs has been a meme long before Lamar’s “Mustard!” chant. The thing is, LeBron knows the words to “TV Off.” All throughout the beef, the legendary athlete has been plugged in to what Kendrick Lamar has been doing. He was filmed dancing to Lamar’s “Not Like Us” in a club, and he once again knew every word to the song. This detail, while seemingly small, is notable. Drake seems to have noticed, as the Toronto rapper unfollowed LeBron James on Instagram a few months back.

The most intriguing aspect of LeBron’s Kendrick Lamar fandom is probably the recent Apple ad he did. The Lakers superstar promoted a brand new beats pill with none other than Drake’s mentor, Lil Wayne. The same Wayne who felt slighted by the fact Kendrick Lamar was chosen to headline the Super Bowl Halftime Show over him. Lamar even referenced this resentment on the opening song of his new album. LeBron James’ allegiance shifted in a major way in 2024, and it looks as though he’s sticking with team K. Dot.

Chrisean Rock’s Alleged Ex Claims He’s The Father Of Her Son

Chrisean Rock is seemingly never far from drama. The rapper has tried to be on a straight and narrow path since being released from prison. A chance encounter with an alleged ex-boyfriend make this very difficult on November 29, however. Chrisean Rock was seemingly minding her own business at a store when the alleged ex pulled up on her and began making a scene. The scene got so heated, apparently, that police were called in to calm things down.

Footage of the confrontation spread like wildfire online. Chrisean Rock was out with her infant son when the aforementioned man walked up to her and began calling the child “junior.” “We got junior right here, he said, while flashing a phone in the child’s face. Chrisean Rock tries to cover her son’s face, but the ex called her out for allegedly hiding the child’s true parentage. “Nobody stalking you,” he claimed. “That’s my f**king son.” Chrisean Rock threatened to call the police on the man, but he was not deterred. “Call ’em,” he responded. “Ain’t nobody touch you. Call ’em.” Rock did just that, which seemed to bring the heated scene to a close.

Chrisean Rock Called The Police On Her Alleged Ex

The parentage of Chrisean Rock’s son had been a topic of debate for quite some time. She has stated that Blueface is the father, but the rapper previously denied it. He even got on Twitter in December to claim that he took a DNA test to prove he was not related to Rock’s son. “Tell me why I snook an swab this baby dna test results came in,” Blueface tweeted. “I am not the father smh it’s a bitter sweat feeling cus I was coming around to it but definitely in my best interes [sic] thank you Jesus. I can’t even pretend like I’m not happy as hell.”

Blueface is widely assumed to be the father of Chrisean Rock’s son, however. Ironically, once the rapper accepted the role, a man named Ronny Doe came forward and demanded that a DNA test be taken to ensure he isn’t the real father. Doe made his claim back in October, and claimed via Instagram that he deserved to know. “A DNA test,” the man stated. “If Junior is not my son the DNA test will prove that.” Rock has not commented on the Instagram demand or the request, in-person confrontation.

Uncle Luke Laughs At “Soft” Drake For Pre-Action Lawsuit Against UMG

The rap world has been watching Drake’s actions very clearly in 2024. Everything the artist has done has been scrutinized and analyzed ad nauseam. There’s been some positive, but a whole lot of negative. This has especially been true since Drake decided to file a pre-action lawsuit against UMG. The emcee claims that the record label conspired to boost the streams of Kendrick Lamar’s diss “Not Like Us.” Whether or not there is validity to this claim is irrelevant in the court of public opinion. Drake is being clowned, and genre icons like Uncle Luke believe he’s being soft.

Uncle Luke took to social media on Friday to discuss the pre-action lawsuit. He laid his cards on the table, and admitted he liked Drake’s music. He didn’t like the way the rapper has handled the fallout of the Kendrick Lamar battle, however. “I don’t like what he got going on right now but I like his music,” he explained. Uncle Luke proceeded to criticize Drake. “You don’t talk about certain things,” he explained. “You don’t talk about Payola. Don’t talk about buying live streams and you don’t sue after you got dissed.”

Uncle Luke Admits He’s Still A Fan Of Drake’s Music

Drake’s decision to violate these seemingly unspoken rules has rubbed Uncle Luke the wrong way. The 2 Live Crew rapper didn’t lay the blame solely at Drake’s feet, though. He claimed that younger generation rappers are more sensitive. “Y’all young people live in a soft society,” he opined. “That’s why I’m glad I’m an OG. All y’all young people soft!” Uncle Luke was frustrated by the fact that Drake is taking legal action over a beef that should have been settled on wax. Or, worst case scenario, as he put it, with “fists.”

Uncle Luke used himself as an example of how to “properly” handle a rap battle. “Me and Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg dissed each other,” he noted. “The kids, off limits. The girlfriend, off limits. Mama off limit. Just keep it a buck.” The irony here, of course, is that Drake and Kendrick Lamar did not adhere to these limits. They brought up each others kids, each other’s significant others and each other’s mothers. It got messy. Despite Drake’s willingness to get personal, though, the “soft” label is sticking to him harder than ever before.

Lefty Gunplay Bashes Drake For Taking Legal Action Against “Not Like Us”

Lefty Gunplay has gotten lots of shine in the last few weeks. The Los Angeles artist had a guest spot on Kendrick Lamar’s new album GNX, which has been uniformly praised by fans and critics. Lefty is clearly team Kendrick in the Drake vs. K. Dot battle. He made it clear during a recent appearance on the Bootleg Kev podcast. Lefty Gunplay discussed his involvement in Lamar’s album, as well as his opinion on Drake and the rapper’s UMG legal case. You can probably guess which way he leans.

Bootleg Kev inquired about the GNX release date, which aligned with Lefty Gunplay’s own release date. The rapper admitted he didn’t know when Lamar planned to drop and probably would have delayed his own album had he known. “L.A. freeze,” Lefty stated. The rapper then started to rattle off names that he would move back his release date for, and people offscreen threw out suggestions. One of the people off the screen asked about Drake, but Lefty Gunplay didn’t bite. “Nah,” he asserted. “We don’t do Drake no more.” Lefty Gunplay did give love to J Cole and Travis Scott, though, implying he would show them the respect of pushing his release date back.

Lefty Gunplay Described Drake’s Actions As “Ho* Sh*t”

Lefty Gunplay then gave his two cents on the UMG lawsuit that Drake has teased. He claimed that he would never do such a thing, and voiced confusion as to why Drake has. “I wouldn’t do that,” Lefty said. “That’s some h* sh*t.” Lefty Gunplay then questioned why Drizzy is taking such a combative stance over something he deems to be good for the rap. “Why you gonna hate,” Lefty Gunplay asked. “It’s all love. Why you gonna hate on the next man getting a bag ‘cuse he was better?” To rub even more salt in the Drake wound, the rapper claimed that the 6 God reached out to him prior to the feud.

“He liked a couple things, he liked my songs,” Lefty Gunplay didn’t have any ill will towards Drake at the time. He did, however, claim that Kendrick Lamar was more respectful and approachable when he made an effort to touch base. “[Drake] never reached out the way Kendrick did,” Lefty Gunplay explained. “When he reached out, he was real. He made me feel comfortable. I felt comfortable with him.”

Joe Rogan Wants to End Drake’s Betting Curse With UFC Gambling Advice

Screen Shot 2024 11 29 at 2.44.35 PM

I guess Joe Rogan knows about betting and the world’s most popular podcaster has some advice for Drake when it comes to betting on sports, especially boxing and MMA. During a recent episode, Rogan shared his thoughts on Drake’s hit-or-miss gambling record.

“I need to get in touch with Drake and talk about his fight picks,” Rogan said. “That guy loses more money on fights… I feel like I need to call him up.”

Gotta admit, when you start a sentence with I need to get in touch with Drake, and you’re kinda serious, then you already won.

Although Rogan’s producer reminded him of some of Drake’s big wins—like his nearly $500,000 bet on Jon Jones defeating Stipe Miocic at UFC 309—Rogan wasn’t impressed. “That’s what I would have picked anyway,” he responded. “It was an easy bet.”

Drake’s gambling record is as unpredictable as his chart-topping hits. In 2022, he lost a whopping $2 million betting on Israel Adesanya. This year, he took another hit, losing $355,000 after Mike Tyson’s surprising loss to Jake Paul. However, not all of his bets have gone south. Earlier in 2023, Drake scored a $1 million payday when Alex Pereira defeated Jamahal Hill in a UFC title fight. Back in 2022, he landed an even bigger win, taking home $3.7 million after successfully predicting victories for Paddy Pimblett and Molly McCann at UFC London.

Rogan hinted that he’d dive deeper into the UMG and Kendrick drama if Drake ever appeared on his podcast.

Adding to the conversation, legendary producer Scott Storch, who was in the building, revealed his frustrations over failed attempts to collaborate with Drake. “I really want to work with Drake,” Storch said. “But I keep running into roadblocks. I know he respects my work, but for some reason, it just hasn’t happened.”

That’s wild. Storch is a legend. That needs to happen but timing is everything.
