Ravyn Lenae and Ty Dolla $ign have a winner with “Dream Girl”. The Chicago, Illinois native has just teamed up the California powerhouse for single number three off the former’s sophomore album. Ravyn will be releasing Bird’s Eye on August 9, and it figures to be a stellar R&B tape for 2024. The veteran singer and songwriter’s instantly recognizable high-pitch and cutsy vocals, along with her stellar production choices make her a force in the space. With those things going for her, she figures to make some noise later this summer.
“Dream Girl” supersedes “Love Me Not” and “Love Is Blind”, both of which dropped on May 3. Each track sound completely different from this Ty Dolla $ign collaboration, ensuring that we have a diverse sound palette on our hands. The tandem we got over a month ago was fantastic, and this solo drop is equally impressive. On “Dream Girl”, Ravyn and Ty are singing about the feelings they get when they meet that special someone over a creative instrumental. It blends a beautiful guitar loop with a groovy drum pattern that will make you want to dance the night away. Additionally, for a first-ever team-up, they sound like they have worked together for decades. “Dream Girl” is addicting as hell, and it figures to be in constant rotation for us going forward.

Rich the Kid already struck gold with “Gimme a Second.” The hard-hitting single sounded slick and nocturnal, and the Peso Pluma verse introduce Rich to a brand new audience. It was hard to imagine a sequel would be able to match the song’s lightning in a bottle feel. Somehow, Rich the Kid managed to top it. The rapper enlisted Kanye West and Ty Dolla Sign, who are basically a duo at this point, and they supercharge the single “Gimme a Second 2.”
Credit to Rich the Kid. He didn’t just get two new artists and throw them on the same instrumental. He rolled out “Gimme a Second 2” with a new sound that evokes Yeezus-era Kanye West. There are eerie choirs in the background, and the hard drum pattern that was buried in the original mix is pushed to the front. It’s to the song’s benefit. Rich the Kid sounds more aggressive during his verse, but the real scene stealer is Kanye. The controversial rapper’s best lyrical moments are behind him, but he still knows how to be memorable. “Girl named Dallas, send a hundred texts,” he raps. “Before I send a b**ch a blessing. I need to see if the sex good, I’m a sexist.” West’s flow is reminiscent of his turn on the Rick Ross single “Sanctified,” which is a good thing. It worked then, and it works now.

XXL has been gathering talented young rap artists together for their yearly Freshman Class for well over a decade now. The artists they pick have the chance to show off their skills and personality in a variety of different events. The most well-known and highly anticipated of the bunch are always the freestyles and cyphers. For the latter groups of rappers are put together to flex their skills over the same beat, most famously done in the 2016 Cypher featuring Denzel Curry, Lil Yachty, Lil Uzi Vert, 21 Savage, and Kodak Black.
But for the freestyle portion, artists are left all on their own with no beat to show off their skills. That’s exactly what Ty Dolla $ign did in 2014 with his now notorious freestyle. He attempted to translate his singing abilities and tendency to get hot and heavy into a freestyle. The hilariously raunchy results have caused it to become a commonly referenced meme among fans. That’s why it’s so funny that Steve Lacy, who must be a big fan himself, recently recreated the hilarious video. Lacy does a pretty great job at capturing both the mannerisms and vocalizations of Ty in the original video, which had fans absolutely cracking up. Check out both videos side by side below.
Steve Lacy has been basically silent musically since 2022. That’s when he released his second studio album Gemini Rights. The project spawned Lacy’s biggest hit to date, “Bad Habits.” The song became a slow-burning smash success that eventually climbed all the way up to number 1 on the Hot 100. The track currently sits with over 1 billion streams just on Spotify alone.
What do you think of Ty Dolla $ign’s iconically awkward 2014 XXL Freshman Freestyle? Do you think Steve Lacy did a good job at capturing what makes it so fascinating and hilarious to fans? Let us know in the comment section below.
Kalan.FrFr has been steadily making a name for himself in the music industry, representing Compton, California with his laid-back vibe and versatile singing and rapping skills. His distinct West Coast sound and commitment to showcasing the essence of Los Angeles are on full display across his music. With recent singles like “Everybody,” a moody ode to L.A. gang culture, and “Ain’t No Fun,” which interpolates Snoop Dogg’s iconic song of the same name, Kalan’s music undoubtedly embodies the ethos of Los Angeles’ rich musical history. His latest project, MAKE THE WEST GREAT AGAIN, looks to further push that message and speaks volumes about his mission to revitalize the West Coast music scene.
In a recent interview with HotNewHipHop, Kalan emphasized the project’s significance as a wake-up call for the entire West Coast music scene. With Kendrick Lamar drawing attention to the region in recent weeks due to his series of Drake diss tracks, all eyes are on this side of town. “It’s about addressing the ongoing conversation in West Coast music where people keep downplaying it,” he explained. “I felt it was time to change that narrative, to give people something that would wake them up, change their perspectives.” With the assistance of L.A. heavyweights like Ty Dolla Sign and YG, he wanted to drive home the message of unity. “It was so important to make sure that we stick together as a whole,” Kalan said.
MAKE THE WEST GREAT AGAIN is a testament to Kalan’s message. If it wasn’t clear before, he’s making it known that this is his rallying cry for the resurgence of West Coast dominance in the rap game. In an exclusive interview with HotNewHipHop, Kalan provides a window into his world, diving into the inspiration behind the EP, his take on the current West Coast music scene, and his personal journey. As summer approaches, Kalan.FrFr is ready to set the tone for L.A.’s hottest season yet.
This interview has been edited and condensed for clarity.
HotNewHipHop: Alright, let’s dive into your latest project, MAKE THE WEST GREAT AGAIN. First off, what was the inspiration behind the name of the project?
Kalan.FrFr: Well, it’s pretty self-explanatory. It’s about addressing the ongoing conversation in West Coast music where people keep downplaying it. I felt it was time to change that narrative, to give people something that would wake them up, change their perspectives. So, MAKE THE WEST GREAT AGAIN felt fitting. And it just stuck. It was time to give people a wake-up call and it was just like putting a battery in everybody’s back.
I like the title. It definitely speaks volumes. Did you come up with the album title before or after all the beef began?
I had the title. I had it going through the process and I came up with like a whole list of titles and stuff like that. And it was named something else at first, but for some reason, I couldn’t name it that and then somebody actually dropped a project with the same name so we couldn’t do that. And then just the whole ambiance of what was going on, it just felt like it fit.
You got Ty Dolla $ign and YG on the project, two West Coast legends. How important was it for you to collaborate with them?
It was so important to make sure that we stick together as a whole, as the West Coast. A lot of times we be so separated on the West, like a lot of people don’t see a lot of the bigger artists working with a lot of the dudes on the come-up that was grinding and stuff like that. So just having songs with YG and Ty Dolla $ign, period, is just like fire.
Was it easy to get them to collaborate with you? Have you been cool with them for a while?
Yeah, Ty and I have been making music since the beginning. YG and I go way back too. So, it was more about timing. We finally locked in and made it happen. It was cool.
What song from the project speaks to you the most?
“ANDFUK” for sure. It’s just the vibe, you know? Had too many lemon drops, turn me to a different person (laughs).
I remember in previous interviews you mentioned you didn’t drink at all. What changed?
Yeah, I changed. I changed for sure. I’ll go to lunch and get like 6 espresso martinis.
Okay, so what’s your vibe when you get in the studio, you have to drink a little bit or smoke a little bit to kind of get in the zone?
I’m smoking all day. Like from sunrise to sundown, I’m smoking. But drinking, I’m not a heavy drinker. But when I do, I’m gonna go hard or go home, for sure, if it’s an opportunity. Not in the studio. I’m just vibing, smoking, and making sure I hear some good beats, listening to it, and making sure I got something to talk about.
Where has the inspiration for the music been coming from lately? This new project has lots of different songs, lots of different sounds that you’re experimenting with. But what kind of topics, for people who haven’t heard it yet, like what are you talking about?
I just been vibing, not too serious right now. For me, I’m just taking everything one day at a time, just vibing, enjoying life for what it is, and taking situations for what they are. So the music sounds vibey, like, I’ve been outside, I’ve been living life.
What has been one of the best experiences you’ve had within the last year, whether it’s been a place you traveled to or a show you performed at? Like, what really comes to mind when you say like, life is good right now?
Man, everything. It’s so many blessings. I’m starting to want to go on this spiritual journey or trip real quick, but like, I’ve been, I’ve been so caught up in being appreciative for like the little things and it’s crazy. It’s just getting up every day, you know, and being able to make music and stuff like that. Like that’s the stuff that means the most to me right now. Because I’m watching a lot of people in situations and they’re not as vibrant. So I just thank God, you know?
That’s good to hear. It feels like you have just been able to stay positive throughout your entire journey. Who are people who have motivated you and kind of kept you inspired throughout the way?
My team for sure. Big shout out to my team. Homies, other artists like Ty for sure, and my family. It’s just the love be coming from everywhere. And then just… I got something to prove. It’s like my fans, the people that believe in me, I got something to prove to them. I want to make sure they keep getting projects, no skips, they keep growing with me, like, you know what’s happening, loving the music every time. I’ll keep making the experience for them every time they see me. I want to say I’m content, but it’s not content, I’m just comfortable.
Like you said, you have a really dedicated fan base. You know, ladies love Kalan. So when you’re making music for the ladies, what kinds of things do you take into consideration? Whose approval do you gotta get?
You know, like, I’m like the woman whisperer (laughs). I know what to say. But I ask my homegirls! I’ll play songs for them and stuff like that. And it comes naturally.
Who would you say is your Mount Rushmore of West Coast artists?
No order, right? Ty’s on there, definitely. Kendrick’s on there, definitely. Snoop Dogg, and Nate Dogg.
I’m glad you mentioned Kendrick. We gotta get into what’s been going on on the West Coast right now. “Not Like Us” is going crazy. I need to know your thoughts on it. Who’s side you on?
They’re not like us. That’s how I feel about it. It’s going insane. We just got to see how all this plays out. Musically though, Dot all the way. I’m rolling with L.A..
Has anyone ever dissed you up to this point?
Not that I’ve heard. Or someone might have said something about me but they had no followers. It was just a coincidence. But you know, I haven’t really encountered any sneaky disses or anything like that. I don’t really pay attention to what others say. You know how it is. If somebody ever addressed me with something negative, I’d address it. I don’t dwell on it too much. I’m one of those people who just let it be. It’s the internet, you know?
People talk a lot on the internet. What’s the craziest rumor you’ve heard about yourself through the internet?
Just rumors about me having kids, you know? It’s kind of amusing how stories like that get twisted. No kids. The internet has some folks thinking they’ve got my love life all figured out, but I’ve heard all kinds of random stuff like that. But none of it’s true. There’s zero truth to it. They just make up stuff.
If you had to pick one word to describe the current state of West Coast music, what word would you use?
Lively. The vibe in the city.
What kind of summer do you think we’re gonna have here in L.A. this year?
For sure, it’s gonna be lit. Some parties are gonna be crazy because it’s already hot. Pool parties are going up. I went to one the other day, and they played “Not Like Us.” It was going crazy. Everybody and their grandma thought they were from L.A.. If you don’t know what you’re doing, just stop. It’s the easiest thing in the world. Stop messing it up. Everybody’s dancing.
So what do you have planned for the summer? What can we look forward to?
I’m going wherever the wind blows. You know, I’ll travel to Houston here and there. Every time I go there, I’ll just chill for a couple of days. So I’m gonna head there. I might go to Miami a couple of times. I’m gonna have fun this summer. I’m enjoying myself. Same vibe. It’s gonna be a great summer. Everything in LA is turnt up. I can’t wait. The way people have been acting these last couple of days, with new music coming out, I’m just interested to see where it’s all going. But I’m here for it. I haven’t seen people this excited about music in a long time. It feels special, different. I’m gonna be hitting the studio heavy, record, for sure.
Kanye West is one of the most mysterious artists in all of music. Occasionally he jumps onto social media and shares all of his thoughts in a much more candid manor. But for the most part fans only get into his head on rare occasions. One of those rare occasions came during a recent Hypebeast interview where he shared his feelings on a variety of subjects. One particular claim that grabbed fan’s attention immediately was the rapper claiming that he’s currently the happiest he’s ever been. But now there’s another claim getting plenty of attention online.
In part of the interview, West compares himself and his VULTURES collaborator Ty Dolla $ign to Drake and 21 Savage. “Man, me and Ty have been doing music for so long. It makes me think of 21 Savage and Drake, who are just such a great combination,” he says in the interview. It’s a surprise revelation following the rapper’s involvement in beef between Kendrick Lamar, Drake, and J. Cole. West posted to Instagram back in March claiming to have washed all the rappers involved in the beef during their past collaborations. Check out the full interview West gave with Hypebeast below.
Kanye West Compares Himself And Ty Dolla $ign To Drake And 21 Savage
West continues discussing he and Ty’s collaborations in the interview. “What people see now, they probably didn’t realize at first. It’s like, ‘Oh, Ty wrote on ‘FourFiveSeconds’. Ty wrote on ‘Only Once’ and ‘Real Friends’ and ‘Fade.’ He wrote on records I did with Paul McCartney. And now people see these whole albums are like, ‘Oh wow, they really make good music together,’” he concluded. Fans are hoping the pair will have more music together coming soon with the announced but not yet released VULTURES 2.
What do you think of Kanye West comparing himself and Ty Dolla $ign’s collaborative energy to that of Drake and 21 Savage? Do you think the comment signifies that West may have changed his mind about his thoughts on Drake? Let us know in the comment section below.
The never-ending cycle of Kanye West and Ty Dolla $ignfalsely prophesizing a release date for an album continued this past Friday. After Ye himself said that VULTURES 2 was dropping on May 3 in a viral interview with Justin LaBoy, fans were obviously ticked off. Part of the reason is because the original release schedule had the second installment releasing on March 8, and the third on April 5. Additionally, people have been left in the dark about what platform this project will be on. However, Ty Dolla $ign recently made it known that VULTURES 2 will see a release through a YZY app.
A tweet from NFR Podcast included a short clip from a Kick livestream with YouTube star Vitaly Zdorovetskiy, or VitalyzdTv. During their chat, a fan sent in a question asking, “Ty, is VULTURES 2 dropping on an app or on streaming services?” The rapper and singer simply replied, “On a app.” That platform is potentially being called the YZY app, with proof from an attached tweet from NFR. It is a screenshot of an Instagram account with the handle, yzyapp. It looks to be legit, as the only two accounts it follows are Ty and Kanye’s. Additionally, it has a link to yeezy.com and over 15,900 followers.
Ty also revealed a good amount of additional information around VULTURES in general during his appearance. According to Netflix Junkie via MSN, the California native gave the fans some lip service about what day the album could drop. “ASAP. Any day now,” he said. “It could be tomorrow, or it could be next Friday.” Furthermore, a music video is on the way for “DO IT,” a track that featured YG and a late Nipsey Hussle feature. Finally, Ty Dolla $ign hinted that because all of the material they have recorded for this trilogy, it could turn into a quadrilogy. “Possibly a four [could drop],” he said. At this point though, all information from artist’s own mouth is hard to trust these days.
What are your thoughts on Ty Dolla $ign claiming that VULTURES 2 will be available on a potential YZY app? With this supposed app in development, how long do you expect for this album to drop now? Is the hype still there for you anymore, why or why not? Is VULTURES 1 still in your rotation, and if so which songs? We would like to hear what you have to say, so be sure to leave your takes in the comments section. Additionally, always keep it locked in with HNHH for all of the latest news surrounding Ty Dolla $ign, Kanye West, and VULTURES 2. Another day, another failed Kanye West rollout. The Chicago rapper was the model of perfectionism in the 2000s, but he’s since become the poster child for failing to meet deadlines. West will drop whenever he feels like it, and if he doesn’t, he doesn’t let fans know. He originally claimed Vultures 2 was going to drop on March 8, but the date came and went with no new music. Radio silence followed, then West said it was going to drop on May 3. Well, May 3 has also come and gone, and fans have yet to hear what the sequel to Ye’s last album sounds like.
This shouldn’t be a surprise. The hours leading up to the supposed Vultures 2 release was characterized by fans setting themselves up for a letdown. Nobody should get their hopes up over a West release date anymore. That being said, the conformation that Vultures 2 has been delayed is disheartening. Fans flocked to X (formerly Twitter) to make their disappointment known.
“I spend the entire night waiting for Vultures 2 debut only to realize Kanye west was pranking us,” one frustrated user wrote. Some took the opposite approach, and criticized those who thought the rapper would really deliver. “If you believed Kanye West was dropping music tonight,” another tweeted. “Then that’s your fault.”
Kanye West did technically drop new music tonight, but it was on another album. The rapper had the lone feature on the 4batz album u made me a st4r. The guest verse he provides on the remix to “act iii: on god? (she said)” is getting positive feedback from fans. Not enough to stave off the disappointment of no Vultures 2, but enough to keep fans satiated until he actually decides to drop. At this rate, we will be lucky to get Vultures 3 by the end of the year.
The disappointment ran deep on Thursday night/Friday morning. X users resorted to gifs and memes when words failed them. One of the most popular is an actual clip of West saying “gotcha” during an interview, which about sums up what happened. Strangely enough, West has never released a sequel album, despite teasing several of them dating back to Watch the Throne 2 (remember that!?). Maybe there’s a correlation, maybe not. Either way, take solace in these reactions.
Ye and Ty Dolla $ign have just decided to postpone their show at the Step Pyramind of Djoser. What was going to be a thrilling moment for their die-hard fans, now has no definite future. According to HipHopDX, Venture Lifestyle, who was helping put this show together, informed the public of this news. They announced this on their Instagram page in a lengthy update. “Ye’s concert at Saqqara Pyramids is postponed,” they wrote.
“The anticipated hi-fidelty audio experience taking place in the Step Pyramid of Djoser, Saqqara, has been postponed, along with other Ye tour dates in April, upon Ye’s team’s request. This listening experience remains scheduled to take place in Saqqara during 2024. The new date will be announced soon.” Additionally, Venture Lifestyle went onto clarify that you can ask for a refund or retain the ticket for when the show happens at its later date.
However, that explanation expectedly did not do much to quell the fans anger for this. One person clearly spent a lot of money on this trip and show. “Naah This is not acceptable like I already bought a flight ticket and I booked a hotel so it’s really not acceptable.” Additionally, others would rather know if it will eventually be shut down for good in the future. Just last month, Ye and Ty canceled six separate shows. So, you can see why people are growing tired of this.
What are your thoughts on Ye and Ty Dolla $ign having to postpone their show at the Step Pyramid of Djoser? Do you think they will actually head there still in 2024 or at all, why or why not? When do you see the duo dropping VULTURES 2? Are you losing interest in everything surrounding these albums? Fans have been impatiently waiting for Ye and Ty Dolla $ign to drop the second installment in the VULTURES trilogy. We got the first entry back on February 10 with tracks like “CARNIVAL,” as well as “BURN” being standout moments. After the duo did a pretty good job at following their release schedule, most were not all that surprised when VULTURES 2 was nowhere to be seen on March 8. With that in mind, most will be not shocked to know that Ye and Ty have just canceled the VULTURES 1 & 2 listening experiences.
Earlier today, the recording duo announced six new venues for VULTURES listening experiences. The cities that were going to play host were Washington DC, Nashville, Fort Lauderdale and Tampa, Pittsburgh, and Charlotte. Unfortunately, that excitement has been short lived. According to HipHopDX, all of the shows for the aforementioned locations have been taken off Ye’s Ticketmaster webpage.
Additionally, they also reported that the Florida sites posted on their Instagram accounts, revealing the cancelations. The Amalie Arena and Amerant Bank Arena accounts said, “We regret to report that due to the time constraints for Ye and Ty Dolla $ign to curate production and meet logistic requirements, the upcoming dates for the VULTURES 1&2 listening experience will need to be revisited at a later date.” Ye nor Ty have spoken out about this as of yet.
What are your thoughts on Ye and Ty Dolla $ign canceling all of the recent VULTURES 1 & 2 listening experiences? Does this surprise you at all, why or why not? When do you think VULTURES 2 will drop? Is this first installment still in your rotation? Should they reschedule any of these shows? We would like to hear what you have to say, so be sure to leave your takes in the comments section. Fans of Ye and Ty Dolla $ign who haven’t gotten to see their their new live experience built around their collaborative album VULTURES 1 just got another chance. The pair just announced yet another listening experience, of the kind that have been controversial in the past few months. The next one will take place on April 9 at the PPG Paints Arena in Pittsburgh. The special part of this announcement is that the currently unreleased VULTURES 2 is also included in the listening party.
While the album was originally supposed to be released in March, it hasn’t arrived yet. Rumors have swirled about potential release dates as collaborators have shared updates to social media showing that the pair are still hard at work on the album. With the PPG Paints Arena promising a listening experience for VULTURES 1 & 2 taking place in just a few weeks it has fans speculating on a release date even more. A third volume of the album series is also expected to be released later this year. Check out the announcement of the newest listening party below.
Earlier this month, Ye & Ty Dolla $ign played a pretty controversial listening party. They took the stage for a special Thursday night headlining set the Rolling Loud Los Angeles. They were there for what many thought would be a performance. Many even bought single day tickets just to see the pair, but the experience ended up being just like other listening parties. At the very least it was a star-studded affair with guests like YG, Freddie Gibbs, Quavo, and more in attendance.
Earlier this week, Ye weighed in on a recent beef sparked by Kendrick Lamar. Rather than taking sides, he claimed to have washed both Drake and Kendrick Lamar in the past in a recent Instagram post. What do you think of Ye & Ty Dolla $ign hosting another listening party in Pittsburgh? Do you think the announcement that VULTURES 2 will be played there is a mistake? Let us know in the comment section below.
