Tems’ NPR Tiny Desk Concert Is A Promising Preview Of Her Upcoming ‘Born In The Wild’ Album

This week will be a big one for Tems in what’s already been an exciting 18 months for the Nigerian singer. On Friday, June 7, Tems will release her debut album Born In The Wild and ahead of its arrival, the singer stopped by NPR’s Tiny Desk to preview a couple of songs from the project and revisit highlights from her discography. She began with “Me & U,” the lead single off Born In The Wild, which was received a slightly stripped-back but equally enjoyable treatment thanks to support from her band and vocalists. Next came “Ice T,” the highlight from her 2020 breakout project For Broken Ears.

Afterward, Tems unveiled previously unheard songs, “Unfortunate” and “Forever,” from Born In The Wild. The former leans more into R&B and afrobeats as a reminder of Tems’ versatile while “Forever” strikes as a truly soaring record that highlights her growth. To close her set, Tems performed “Love Me Jeje,” the third single from Born In The Wild which interpolates Seyi Sodimu’s 1997 hit of the same name.

Tems’ Tiny Desk set comes days after she revealed the official tracklist for Born In The Wild. The album features 18 songs and guest appearances from Asake and J. Cole. She’s also set to embark on the Born In The Wild Tour with Naomi Sharon and Lekan.

You can watch Tems’ NPR Tiny Desk in the video above.

Born In The Wild is out 6/7 via RCA Records/Since ’93. Find out more information here.

Tems Reveals Tracklist For Her Upcoming Album “Born In The Wild”

Tems has been one of the true breakout stars of the 2020s. The singer went from relative obscurity to headlining radio hits alongside rappers like Drake and Future. She even got the lead singer on a Black Panther soundtrack. The anticipation for her album has been at a fever pitch since it was announced back in 2022, and we finally have a tracklist. The Nigerian singer previously released the album cover, but the tracklist gives us a better feel for what she has in store, musically speaking.

Tems’ body of work so far has been concise and largely EP driven. Born In the Wild is a chance for her to display her artistry over a lengthy period, and she’s taking advantage of it. The album has 18 songs on it, and the features are minimal. It’s obvious the singer has the chops and the confidence to carry the lion’s share of the album on her own. Asake, another Nigerian artist, is featured on the song “Get It Right,” and J Cole will appear on “Free Fall.” The latter is a fascinating choice, given that Tems has worked with the other two rappers in the so-called Big Three. She’s made two hit songs with Drake, and she had a Q&A with Kendrick Lamar in 2023.

Tems Scored Features From Asake And J Cole

Tems talked about the recording process of Born In the Wild during her Interview Magazine chat with Lamar. She told the rapper that she didn’t intend to make the album so personal in theme. She was just compelled to dig into her own life whenever she stepped in the booth. “Sometimes it freaks me out,” she explained. “Sometimes I freestyle to a point where I can’t feel my feet. I’ve entered somewhere and I don’t even know where I am anymore. I’m just pouring out my gut and then when I’m done, I don’t remember what I just did.”

Tems also claimed that she encountered several “lightning in a bottle” moments during the making of the album. Moments in which she gave herself over to her artistic muse, and operated on instinct. It’s hard to find, but it’s special when you find it. “It’s like tuning a radio and you find a channel, but the thing is, once you lose that channel, you can’t find it again,” she told Lamar. “You can find another channel, another freestyle, another thing, but not that. Unless you’re really, really tapped in.”

Tems Reveals Release Date For New Album “Born In The Wild”

Tems has become a household name in a head-spinning amount of time. The Nigerian songstress went from critically acclaimed artist to pop star thanks to collabs with the likes of Future, Wizkid, and Drake. She even appeared on the soundtrack for Black Panther: Wakanda Forever in 2022. Tems is officially a big time name, and she hasn’t even dropped an album. At least, so far. She hopped on social media on May 10 to unveil the cover AND release date for her long-awaited debut.

The artwork for her debut album, Born In the Wild, is absolutely striking. The singer is barely illuminated against a black backdrop. All you can see is her eyes, her jewelry, and loose outline of her body. It fits her soulful, ethereal aesthetic to a T. The bigger revelation, though, was the album’s release date. Fans have been waiting for a Tems album for close to five years, so to call a proper release date a huge deal is an understatement. The singer confirmed that Born In the Wild will be dropping on June 7th.

Tems’ Anticipated Debut Will Drop June 7th

Born In the Wild is a long time coming. Tems first teased the album’s existence in 2022 via X (formerly Twitter), and it was originally supposed to drop in May 2024. She didn’t reveal the reason for the delay, but she did reflect on feeling the pressure to deliver during a Billboard profile. The singer claimed she wanted to push the boundaries of what Nigerian performers could get away with. “Is it possible to make this type of music even though I’m Nigerian,” she asked the outlet. “Is there a limit to what I can make? I wanted to find out.”

Tems has released three singles ahead of the album’s release. “Me & U,” “Not An Angel,” and “Love Me JeJe” have all been warmly received by fans and critics.”Me & U” has done particularly well, earning an Outstanding International Song at the 55th NAACP Image Awards. Tems described each of these songs as being powerful because they came from an honest place. “I feed myself with truth and I pray a lot,” she told Apple Music. “I think attaining knowledge and gaining understanding is how you stay grounded.” Now that a proper release date has been dropped, the prayers of Tems’ fans have also been answered.

Kicking off in London on June 12, the routing brings the Nigerian star back to the US on August 22 to start the North American leg of the tour in Miami Beach, Florida, then after completing the North American leg in Los Angeles, October 1, she will head to Africa, Asia, and Australia.

Tems Revealed The Release Date For Her Debut Album ‘Born In The Wild,’ As Well As Its Cover Art

Nigerian star Tems has announced the release date for her much-anticipated debut album, Born In The Wild. “This is my most special moment,” she wrote on Twitter (never calling it “X”). “Everything I have I put into this. Thank you all so much for believing in me. BORN IN THE WILD. JUNE 7th.” She also included a look at the cover art for the album, which you can see below.

When Tems broke out in 2020 with her feature on Wizkid’s top-ten hit “Essence,” she instantly became a name music fans had to keep an eye on. Since then, she’s released two EPs, became the first African artist to debut at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 thanks to her feature on Future’s “Wait For U” with Drake, won a Grammy Award for Best Melodic Rap Performance for that same song, and co-wrote Rihanna’s Black Panther: Wakanda Forever song “Lift Me Up,” earning nominations for another Grammy, a Golden Globe, and an Oscar.

Doing all this without an album out is pretty impressive, but what may end up being even more impressive is the album itself. So far, Tems has released three singles — “Me & U,” “Not An Angel,” and “Love Me JeJe” — and all have instantly become fan favorites. June 7th can’t come soon enough.

Born In The Wild is due 6/7 via RCA / Since ’93. You can find more info here.

Tems Recreates An Afro-beat Classic With “Love Me JeJe”

Tems has grown into her own ever since hip-hop fans discovered her on Future and Drake’s 2022 collaboration “WAIT FOR U.” It went on to become one of Hendrix’s most popular songs on Spotify for quite some time. The R&B jam even peaked at number one on the Billboard Hot 100, scoring her first chart-topper. Fairly soon now, she will be looking to carry all of that momentum onto her debut album. Tems is showing she is ready to take that next leap with one of the project’s singles, “Love Me JeJe.”

Just over a week ago, the Nigerian singer and songwriter teased BORN IN THE WILD on X (formerly Twitter), saying, “BORN IN THE WILD. The Album. May 2024.” Since then, she has not announced the exact release date, but hopefully it will hit streaming services within the first two weeks of the month. We also do not have a confirmed tracklist either, according to Genius.

Listen To “Love Me JeJe” By Tems

At this current moment, the site has three other songs listed for the album. Those include “Me & U,” “Not An Angel,” and the unreleased title track. “Love Me JeJe” is actually a recreation of an Afro-beat record from the late 90s by Seyi Sodimu. The original seems to slower instrumentally, while Tems’ updated rendition is more up-tempo to give it a more party-friendly aesthetic. Both songs are stunning and it is hard to pick which we love more.

What are your thoughts on this brand-new single “Love Me JeJe” by Tems? Is this one of her better songs as of late, why or why not? Does this get you excited for her upcoming album BORN IN THE WILD, why or why not? We would like to hear what you have to say, so be sure to leave your takes in the comments section. You know your love turn me up like NEPA
Anything you want and I’ma do whatever

Tems Drops New Track "Love Me JeJe" Ahead of Debut Album Release

Today, Lagos, Nigeria-based singer, songwriter, and producer Tems has released her latest track, “Love Me JeJe,” via Since ’93/RCA Records.

“Love Me JeJe” is the first single from Tems’ highly anticipated debut album, Born In The Wild, scheduled for release this May. The song, which translates to “Love Me Softly” in Nigerian, pays homage to Tems’ childhood and upbringing, featuring an interpolation of the Nigerian classic of the same name by Seyi Sodimu.

Written entirely by Tems, “Love Me JeJe” is produced by Spax and Guiltybeatz. It offers listeners a glimpse into the artist’s unique blend of soulful vocals and infectious rhythms.

Tems Dropped ‘Love Me JeJe,’ A Loving Song That Finds Her ‘Paying Tribute’ To Nigeria

It happened slowly, and then all at once. The Tems well ran dry (outside of her casually earning an Oscar nomination for writing on Rihanna’s “Lift Me Up”) for two years before she returned with “Me & U” last October, and the Nigerian artist proceeded to drop “Not An Angel” in December. Then, in between her Coachella 2024 sets, Tems announced Born In The Wild, her debut studio album due out in May.

Before officially announcing the album with a 56-second trailer, Tems confirmed to her audience during Coachella 2024 Weekend 1 that her album was done. As shared by Seyi Sodimu on Instagram, Tems introduced “Love Me JeJe” as her “paying tribute to my country” and debuted it with a call-and-response performance, including the catchy hook, “Love my jeje, love me tender.” Elsewhere in the song, Tems emphasizes her undying devotion and loyalty with masterful use of repetition: “Any time you call me, I’ll be down / I’ll be down / Because I love and I love and I love and I love you only / Because I need and I need and I need and I need you more.”

“Love Me Jeje” officially arrived on Friday, April 26. As pointed out by Billboard, Sodimu, a Nigerian singer-songwriter, released “Love Me JeJe” featuring Shafy Bello in 1997. Now, “Love Me JeJe” serves as the first song confirmed to be from Tems’ Born In The Wild.

Listen to “Love Me JeJe” below.
