The Best Hip-Hop Albums Of April 2024

The RX is Uproxx Music’s stamp of approval for the best albums, songs, and music stories throughout the year. Inclusion in this category is the highest distinction we can bestow, and signals the most important music being released throughout the year. The RX is the music you need, right now.

For the second monthly installment of The Best Hip-Hop Albums, we had to dig a little deeper than we did in March, thanks in part to fewer releases overall. However, while there were fewer albums from established, well-known acts, plenty of up-and-coming artists took the opportunity to stake their claims on gaining a foothold in the public consciousness.

Thanks to Drake and Kendrick Lamar, it was an uphill battle. While Kendrick’s contribution to their ongoing feud didn’t arrive until the end of the month, Drake’s antics were more than enough to keep us all at our favorite digital water coolers, discussing his distasteful use of AI, and whether he still has the juice to survive another confrontation with a lyrical heavyweight with a longer history of critical support.

But even with those two sucking up all the oxygen, there were still plenty of new releases worth checking out if beef wasn’t your thing. Here are the best hip-hop albums of April 2024.

Anycia — Princess Pop That

Anycia

The Atlanta newcomer got plenty of attention thanks to Latto’s verse on “Back Outside,” but Anycia’s first-ever mixtape bears more than enough proof that she’s bigger than beef. Her herky-jerky flow, smoky vocal timbre, and unabashed bluntness are versatile enough to tackle both boisterous boasts and unfiltered heartbreak, while the choice of production keeps the energy level high through all 14 tracks.

Future & Metro Boomin — We Still Don’t Trust You

future x metro boomin we still don't trust you cover
Future / Metro Boomin

The second half of Future & Metro’s double disc project focuses more on the singing than the rapping, so there was a strong argument that this leaves it in Wongo’s territory, but we did include it in the Best New Hip-Hop of the week, so it qualifies for the month. Besides, thanks to contributions from ASAP Rocky, J. Cole, and Lil Baby, it still has more than enough bars for anyone who wants them.

GloRilla — EhhThang EhhThang

glorilla ehhthang ehhthang
GloRilla

Hip-hop can be a lot of things: Angry, menacing, political, and thoughtful. But I think at its core, what people want most from rap music is for it to be fun. GloRilla understands this and aims to feed this impulse directly on her first mixtape since 2020’s independent P Status. The project allays concerns that she might have been just a one-hit wonder with song of the summer potentiates “Wanna Be” featuring Megan Thee Stallion and “Yeah Glo!” while providing introspection on “Aite” and “High AF.” Will you find dizzying feats of virtuoso lyrical gamesmanship here? No. But hip-hop has always been way more than just rappity-rap wordplay and “fight the power” ethos. Sometimes, you just want to turn up. That’s when you turn on GloRilla.

J. Cole — Might Delete Later

j cole might delete later
J. Cole

I also debated not including this one, solely based on Cole’s decision to pull “7 Minute Drill” from DSPs as a sort of self-fulfilling prophecy. Fortunately for him, there are still 11 other solid tracks, including the nostalgic Dipset callback “Ready ’24” and “H.Y.B” with Bas and Central Cee. Intricate wordplay may not be your thing, but Cole’s latest scratches that very specific itch, despite distracting him from following through on his promise to bring The Fall-Off to fruition.

Skilla Baby — The Coldest

Skilla Baby

The Michigan rapper follows up his 2023 collaborative project Controversy with Tee Grizzley with a solid solo effort. The Coldest finds him using his choppy flow to detail his misadventures in the streets with a cool-headed charisma that makes what should be worn-out material sound fresher than ever. A slew of guest stars, from Flo Milli to Rob49, join him on trunk-rattling production, but he never lets anyone steal the spotlight, proving that he’s a star in the making.

Skilla Baby Has Goals To Be “The Coldest” On New Album

Skilla Baby has quickly become one of the prominent voices out of the gritty, blue-collar city of Detroit. Even though he has been on the grind since 2015, he has been really growing over the last couple of years. With songs like “Gorgeous,” “Bae,” and “Icky Vicky Vibes,” being some of his standouts, the hardcore/trap rapper is looking to expand what he can do as an artist. That is what Skilla Baby was telling AllHipHop in a recent interview about his new tape The Coldest.

“The pressure of being a new artist, being successful, staying disciplined, and still clocking into the studio is very strenuous. But fun at the same time,” Skilla said. That is certainly the mindset of a lot of climbers in the hip-hop industry. It feels like fans nowadays put a lot of the onus on the artist to blow them away.

But Skilla Baby certainly lived up to expectations on The Coldest. He partially did so by bringing on a lot of big names. Rob49, Moneybagg Yo, Flo Milli, G Herbo, DaBaby, and Polo G are just a few to name. Across the record you will hear a lot of what makes Skilla Baby, Skilla Baby. Hard-hitting, trap bangers with rage-worthy energy.

Skilla Baby Ramps Up The Energy & Violence On “Free Big Meech”

I get love in Detroit like Skilla Baby,” is the mood that the rapper should be in because “Free Big Meech” will give him plenty of praise. Skilla is back with a new solo single, which follows up “Plate” from February 2. However, he also been busy with the collaborations as of late too. In 2024, the 25-year-old MC has worked with CRASH RARRI, YN Jay, Sada Baby, Young Ra, Tavo Baby Big6, and Yung Miami. That latter team-up was a successful one for him, as “CFWM (Can’t F*** With Me)” was doing solid numbers when it dropped.

If there is there something to expect going into a Skilla Baby track, it is that you know you are going to get lot of wild energy. That is the case here too on “Free Big Meech.” There is plenty of street talk and violent bars to be had and it is all performed over a chilling trap beat. “Pistol whip a n**** with my blick and leave him cockeyed (Ha) / Put a ten on him, it ain’t s*** to get an opp fried (Ha).”

Pretty soon he will be dropping his first record called THE COLDEST. In fact Genius says it will be dropping next Friday, April 26. Alleged features include Flo Milli, Mozzy, Moneybagg Yo, Rob49, G Herbo, DaBaby, and more.

What are your thoughts on this brand-new single “Free Big Meech” by Skilla Baby? Is this one of his stronger releases as of late, why or why not? Where does he rank among the modern crop of Detroit rappers? Does this get you excited for his upcoming album THE COLDEST? Yung Miami & Skilla Baby Are On That “CFWM” Energy: Listen

Yung Miami has been dealing with a lot of noise in her life mainly due to her troubled man Diddy. However, she has not been in the clear either. The femcee was handed down a lawsuit for copyright over “Act Bad,” a collaboration with Diddy and Fabolous. She did not appreciate how that all went down, saying, “I’m so tired of the internet & ppl f***ing with me everyday!!!” Furthermore, her and her City Girls bandmate JT were also at odds for a minute before eventually making up on X.

Clearly, there is a lot on Yung Miami’s mind and she may have just vented those frustrations on “CFWM.” It is an all-new single that dropped today and it features Detroit’s own Skilla Baby. This is the first these two have come together for a track and it is all about feeling beautiful and confident. It is a self-affirming anthem for the ladies and Miami definitely delivers the energy.

There is a possibility that this could be the start of the rollout for her solo project. JT is rumored to be dropping her own sometime in 2024, while Miami has been pushing the Yams era on her social media. It is a way of spelling out her hometown of Miami, but it is also the mindset she has going forward. You can stream “CFWM” with the link above.

What are your thoughts on this brand-new single, “CFWM,” by Yung Miami and Skilla Baby? Is this each artist’s best track as of late, why or why not? Who had the stronger performance on the track? What is your favorite element of it? Should they work together more in the future? Is Yung Miami dropping an album soon? Bfb Da Packman’s ‘Forget Me Not’ Tracklist Features Drake, DDG, Skilla Baby, And More

Of all the co-signs a rising artist could receive, the most coveted is still Drake’s — just look at the response to his remix of 4Batz’s breakout song “Act II: Date @ 8.” Even Kendrick Lamar, who is apparently dead set on going at Drake’s neck lately, owes at least some of his popularity to appearing on the Canadian rapper’s second album.

However that particular situation turns out, Drake hasn’t stopped sharing his platform with up-and-coming artists. The latest to receive his coveted co-sign is Flint, Michigan’s Bfb Da Packman. Drake appears on the tracklist of Packman’s upcoming album Forget Me Not, which he shared via social media on Monday (March 25).

In addition to Drake, Forget Me Not will feature guest appearances from many of Bfb Da Packman’s fellow Michigan natives, includine DDG, Icewear Vezzo, Rio Da Yung OG, Skilla Baby, and Yhung T.O.. West Coast rap impressionist 03 Greedo also makes an appearance, further strengthening the longstanding bond between the Motor City and the Golden State.

Drake’s impending appearance on Packman’s album is already generating plenty of buzz online, as fans of the underground rapper anticipate a glowup of similar proportions to all those who have tapped the reigning star of hip-hop on past projects like Lil Baby, Migos, and more.

Forget Me Not is out on 3/29 via Sony.

Twerking Skilla Baby Fan Upsets Boyfriend At Concert: Watch

A word of advice to Skilla Baby fans out there: don’t take your girlfriend to the young rapper’s concerts, or she just might end up throwing it back on stage with him. One fan learned that the hard way after a recent performance, during which the 25-year-old was pleasantly surprised by an eager woman putting her booty back on him in front of the crowd. Rather than calling for security or shoving her away as some entertainers have been known to do with overzealous admirers, he caught what she was throwing and proceeded to pound into her backside while she held onto his black tee.

Dozens of people caught the hot and heavy moment with their phones, and all the while, another patron who appeared to be the woman’s boyfriend was trying to take her off the stage. Though he appeared in the moment at first, once he realized what was happening, Skilla’s face noticeably changed. “He looks incredibly uncomfortable 😂. Let’s talk about that,” one Instagram user observed in @theneighborhoodtalk’s comments. “Once he found out mans was right there he was over it 🤣🤣,” another chimed in.

It’s not uncommon for artists to be unexpectedly hit with public displays of affection from their supporters, and we’re always curious to see their reactions. While Skilla Baby briefly enjoyed the booty being thrown back at him, Offset wanted no part in looking at the bra someone tossed on his stage earlier this month, reminding us that not all stars are open to sexual advances from strangers.

On the topic of viral twerking videos, SZA shared some booty-shaking footage that’s been circulating through the blogosphere this week. As supportive of her fellow female artists as ever, the Ctrl hitmaker was throwing it back to some Sexyy Red while friends hyped her up. Skilla Baby Makes Things Personal On “Plate”

We love talking about the Midwest rap talent here on HNHH. It is an underrated region in terms of producing interesting artists, compared to the West, the South, and the East. Today, we are heading back to Motor City, Detroit, Michigan, to talk about a face that is slowly establishing himself. That rapper is Skilla Baby.

Skilla, like most of the MCs from the city, is aggressive, gritty, and has a blue-collar mentality. This allows for the 25-year-old to come across as authentic when he talks about his personal experiences. 2023 was a busy year for Skilla Baby, as he went on to drop two projects and a load of singles. Those two were Controversy and We Eat The Most.

Listen To “Plate” By Skilla Baby

The Geffen Records signee is back with his third single of the year already. “Plate” sees Skilla Baby talk about how he is always trying to give back to his community and family. There is a saying that money changes people. However, a more appropriate way to look at it would be to say that money makes someone more of what they already are. That is what Skilla is trying to convince and convey. Even with all of the fame, he is still going to do what is right morally for those he holds close to his heart. It is a violent but emotional single that Skilla fans will appreciate.

What are your thoughts on this brand-new single, “Plate” by Skilla Baby? Is this the best song you have heard from him recently? Do you think he is the best up-and-comer from Detroit, why or why not? Is an album in the works? We would like to hear what you have to say about all of this. With that in mind, be sure to leave all of your hottest takes in the comments section below. Wasn’t nobody around me, I was starvin’, real, it was late

Rowdy Rebel And Skilla Baby Are Balling Like Memphis Basketball Star Ja “Morant”

Rowdy Rebel seems to be a pretty patient artist compared to most nowadays. A lot of the rappers who have been in the game as long as he has, tend to drop very frequently. The opposite can be said about Rowdy. Although, he has been picking it up a bit over the past year or so.

He has dropped three projects, with one of them being a collaborative record. This past Friday, December 8, the Brooklyn product came through with one last hoorah before 2024 comes around. Back Outside boasts features from Skilla Baby, Fivio Foreign, Fetty Luciano, and Icewear Vezzo. One track we want to highlight is “Morant.”

Ja does ball on the court and that is what these two want to make sure everyone knows. They know how to flex within the rap game with their achievements and luxuries. You can check out the song and project on all DSPs now.

What are your initial thoughts on this new song, “Morant,” by Rowdy Rebel and Skilla Baby? Is Skilla going to be one of the hottest rappers in the next couple of years? Calboy And Skilla Baby Link Up For New Single “Gang Time”

Calboy has been a pretty controversial figure in hip-hop during his tenure in the industry. During the whole year of 2022, it seemed he could never really stay out of the headlines for all of the wrong reasons. Whether it would be with holding grudges with labels, beefing with rappers, or getting into legal trouble, he was always putting himself in tough spots. It appears he is more well-known for those altercations, as well as being the cousin to the late rapper, King Von.

However, this time we are talking about Calboy because his back with another single. The Chicago artist already has four other songs out from this year. Those include, “Stargaze,” “She Know (In Too Deep),” “Trippin’ Bout It,” and “On My Own.” All four of those were solo tracks, but this fifth one breaks that streak.
