Serena Williams knows what it takes to be great, and she sees just how special “Not Like Us” is. According to AllHipHop, the tennis icon had a panel at the recent ESSENCE Festival in New Orleans. She was there to speak on the diversity of beauty, as well as to promote her Wyn makeup line. However, that was not the only topic discussed. With the Drake and Kendrick Lamar beef being so widely spread, it was no surprise that she was asked about it in one way or another. While she did not speak on the rapper’s disdain for each other, Serena Williams did gush about “Not Like Us”.

“I love that song. It’s like the hit of the summer. When they play that jam, I’m jamming. That jam is jamming”, Williams gleefully said. Perhaps a small sliver of that praise comes from the fact that Kendrick warns Drake about talking sideways about the world-famous athlete. The recent back and forth between Kendrick Lamar and Drake has sent the hip hop world into a frenzy. One significant ripple effect from the beef is the sudden spike in interest regarding past scuffles that each rapper has engaged in. One such beef includes a 2012 spat between Drake and Common, which saw the rappers trading jabs over several tracks, social media posts, and interviews. Today, the Drake and Common beef has long since been settled, allowing both lyricists to speak on their disagreement with the fresh perspective of hindsight. Let’s dig into the Drake and Common beef details and unpack the entire situation.

The Beef Began Over Serena Williams

When this beef kicked off, fans had no idea that world-renowned athlete Serena Williams was secretly at the center of it all. Yet, Common admitted during a recent Drink Champs interview that his beef with Drake was something of a Trojan War moment in his career, with Serena in the role of Helen of Troy. Serena and Common had previously dated from roughly 2007 to 2010. The pair have never publicly explained what caused their breakup, but Serena ended up in a romantic entanglement with Drake shortly thereafter. Common refused to elaborate on what specific subliminal jabs kicked the whole thing off in his eyes, but he confirmed that his lyrics on the song “Sweet” were directed at the Toronto native. Instead of immediately responding on wax, Drake took to the stage during a December 2011 performance, explaining to the crowd, “I might sing, but I ain’t no b****. If Common got something to say, say it to my face.”

From there, things continued to heat up, with Drake sending more direct shots over Rick Ross’s “Stay Schemin.” Common provided the most direct bars in the entire beef with a scathing “Stay Schemin” remix, rapping, “I’m taking too long with this amateur guy/ You ain’t wet nobody, n****, you Canada dry/ Soft n****, make no mistake, I’m talking to Drake.“

He even clarified how exactly they managed to peace it up, revealing that Drake’s father, Dennis Graham, was responsible for bringing them together. After bumping into Drake at the 2013 Grammy Awards, Common claims that he was confrontational, until Dennis stepped in and demanded that they talk it out. The Chicago MC explained, “His father was there and was like, ‘Y’all need to squash this.’ And I was like, Man, this an elder talking to me. This this man’s father. Let me chill out… So we just squashed it… I said what I had to say. Right now, we saying we squashing it. We good.”

The Kendrick Lamar and Drake beef have had the internet fixated for weeks now. After a weekend that included several diss tracks from both artists aimed at each other, the beef is still ongoing. Even older beefs are being brought up, especially on Drake’s side. Drake has been involved with and beefed with a lot of different women and even their significant others. One notable fling Drake had was with Serena Williams, who, after all these years, gets stary shots here and there on Drake records. Serena William’s husband, Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian, has made it clear whose side he is on.

Serena Williams and Drake were rumored to be seeing each other in the early 2010s. The tennis icon married Ohanian in November 2017. Drake is not one to let go of someone he was involved with without mentioning them on his albums. Drake has thrown shots at Serena and her husband before. He’s already dead!” Kendrick then released “Not Like Us,” in which he mentioned Serena and warned Drake about disrespecting the tennis GOAT and Compton native. Kendrick rapped, “From Alondra down to Central, n**ga better not speak on Serena.” Ohanian has been enjoying Drake getting slandered, and it’s understandable from his perspective.

After Kendrick’s second release of the weekend, Ohanian quote tweeted his own tweet saying, “Damn. This was just yesterday?” Drake called out Ohanian in 2022, calling him a “groupie on his record “Middle of the Ocean” “Sidebar, Serena, your husband a groupie/He claim we don’t got a problem but/No, boo, it is, like you comin’ for sushi/We might pop up on ’em at will like Suzuki,” Drake rapped. LeBron James And Serena Williams Brought Up In YSL RICO Trial

Every time it seems like the strangest thing yet has happened in the Young Thug YSL RICO case, it manages to one-up itself. Across the past few days, one of the label’s co-founders Tick has been testifying and there’s been a number of explosive moments from his testimony alone. But that may not even cover the most surprising development. That came when the court’s Zoom meeting was hacked, seemingly by a fan of Young Thug. The fan interrupted the trial proceedings while calling for the rapper to be freed.

Today, Tick was back again this time for cross-examination from the defense. One of the strategies Thug’s defense lawyers deployed was an attempt to muddy the water about what signified somebody as a gang member or gang affiliate. To do so he introduced several pieces of evidence of unaffiliated celebrities doing similar things to what the prosecution had alleged were gang activity. This included Lil Wayne’s tattoos, the way Serena Williams was walking, and most notably a clip of Lebron James. In the clip, Lebron does a “slime” handshake with one of his Lakers teammates. The defense is using that as evidence that more evidence is needed to prove somebody is actually gang affiliated. Check out the video of the testimony below.

Before Tick could finish being cross-examined, the judge delayed the continuation of the trial until later this month. Wild headlines about the YSL case will slow down until at least January 22 when it’s due to get back under way. The judge left both the jury and legal teams with a request to use the time off to get their appropriate flu shots and vaccinations.

Sickness has already been an issue in the case responsible for more than one delay in trial proceedings. Last night, Serena Williams revealed like many mothers she was experiencing a moment where she ‘does not feel ok.’ The 23-Grand Slam champion took to X (formally known as Twitter) to describe how she was feeling since giving birth 3-months ago. In her post, the mom of two had a simple message that many parents might relate to.

“I am not ok today,” she tweeted. “And that’s ok to not be ok.”

And so now that I know that it’s so important to just put yourself first, especially mentally, I always have shut down moments.
