Polo G Goes To The ‘Darkside’ In His Confessional New Video From ‘HOOD POET’

After months of delays and setbacks, Polo G was at last able to release his fourth studio album, HOOD POET. An acronym for “He Overcame Obstacles During Pain or Emotional Trauma,” the title turned out to be prophetic, as Polo had to deal with multiple arrests and a raid on his Los Angeles home while trying to promote the album. Still, he persevered, and the album is out now via Columbia Records.

Its release is accompanied by the video for “Darkside,” a standout, confessional inclusion, in which Polo vents about some of the aforementioned traumas and tribulations of his life. “I might never cough again from all that mud that I was sippin’,” he recalls. “Missin’ school every day, but on that block, perfect attendance / Bein’ broke the root of evil, it’ll turn you to a menace / It’s so hard to beat the odds when we was taught to be statistics / In this life, you only see the graveyard or go to prison.” The video sees him performing in a desert wasteland, flanked by a pair of armed guards. He’s been lifting too.

The Chicago rapper released four singles prior to the album: “Barely Holdin’ On,” “Sorrys & Ferraris,” “Angels In The Sky,” and “We Uh Shoot” with Lil Durk.

Polo G Drops Heartfelt “Hood Poet” Album After A Three Year Absence

Polo G has been through it. The rapper’s music has always had a contemplative feel to it, but the events of the last few years had doubled it. Polo G has opened up about his decision to step out of the spotlight and get sober, which has resulted in Hood Poet being delayed multiple times. Well, we finally have it. The anticipated fourth album by Polo G is here, and we’re happy to say it was worth the wait. It not only lays any claims to rest that the rapper has lost it, it might just be his most focused release yet. Hood Poet evokes previously untapped depth, and the album lives up to its weighty title.

There’s not a lot of joy on here, but Polo G does an exemplary job of exploring darker spaces. “Detox” breaks down his dire struggle to get sober, while “Darkside” gives the rapper ample room to wax poetic about his past. Thankfully, the guest features buy into the album’s themes. Lil Durk sounds impassioned as ever on the standout single “We Uh Shoot.” 42 Dugg, meanwhile, delivers a particularly gritty verse on “Only Gang.” Polo G really gets in his bag on the album’s solo songs, though. “Thorns” and “Distraction” are driven by the tension between slow tempos and Polo G’s propulsive flow. The best example of this is the single “Angels In the Sky.” It not only boasts one of the best beats, but one of the rapper’s catchiest hooks to date. We’re glad Polo G took his time with this one.

[WATCH] Polo G Breaks Silence On His Mother Shooting At His Sister

Screenshot 2024 08 05 at 10.25.46 PM

Back in June, a video made rounds on social media which showed Stacie Mac, the mother of rapper Polo G, allegedly shooting at her daughter and Polo’s sister Leilani.

In the footage, Mac can be heard screaming after what sounds like a gunshot goes off, “Get off my s**t. You tough b**ch. You tough b**ch,” while chasing Leilani. Another gunshot sounds off and screams from a woman, presumably Leilani, are heard. Stacia then walks back into her home, still visibly upset.

Polo G addressed the video in a new interview with The Breakfast Club, saying that he will always intervene in situations like that because he does not want to see things “go too far.” That prompted jokes from Charlamagne, who pointed out that they were already fighting and shooting at each other. He remarked that since Polo G is from Chicago, his definition of “too far” is different from everyone else’s, which Polo laughed at.

Shortly after the video surfaced on Instagram, Polo G’s mother claimed that Leilani had a manic episode that night. She added that she fired shots because she wanted her off the property immediately. Leilani claimed that her mother was “jealous” of her and “wants to be a thug.”

Polo G is in the middle of a difficult situation, one that Breakfast Club co-host DJ Envy asked if he started working to help resolve. He responded by saying he wants to help the two of them put their issues aside. At the same time, he also wants to “let it breathe” before attempting to do so.

Polo G recently confirmed that his next album, Hood Poet, is dropping on August 9. Polo first teased the album in 2022. However, his legal issues led to an indefinite postponement of both the album and his next tour. He was arrested in April on an illegal firearm possession charge at The Dominick Hotel in the SoHo district of New York City. Those issues seem to be behind him. At least enough for him to go forward with his album rollout. Hood Poet features collaborations from several big names, including FutureGloRilla, Offset, The Kid LAROI, Lil Durk, and more. Hopefully, Polo can mediate a peaceful resolution to the feuding family members.

Polo G Reunites With Lil Durk For “We Uh Shoot” Single Off Upcoming Album

It’s clear that Polo G has been dealing with a lot mentally speaking over the last couple of years. In a recent interview with Kurrco, the Chicago, Illinois native kept it a buck about how superstardom was something he wasn’t really ready for. “I feel like I took a three-year break after being scorching hot”, he began. Later in the talk, he cited that same break was equally as challenging because he loves he what does so much at the same time. “That s*** really f***ed with my mental, a lot”, he added. However, Polo G is officially ready to reinstate himself and remind everyone who he is with “We Uh Shoot”.

This is just one slice of the pie, as the “Martin & Gina” rapper and singer is ending the album drought next Friday. To follow up on 2021’s Hall of Fame, he will finally be delivering the highly teased and awaited HOOD POET. Polo G announced the August 9 release date a couple of days ago on Instagram, along with the stacked feature list that includes Future, GloRilla, 42 Dugg, Offset, Lil Durk, and more. The latter is featured on “We Uh Shoot”, an aggressive gun-toting track. Similarly, Polo G is shelving out a lot of money for this album to sound crisp because Allen Ritter, Southside and TM88 are all credited producers on this single. Give the record a spin with the link below.

Polo G And Lil Durk Warn Their Foes ‘We Uh Shoot’ On Their Menacing New Collaboration

Polo G’s long-awaited fourth studio album was finally given a release date this week, as well as an updated title. While it’s still called Hood Poet, the title is now an acronym, which according to a press release for its new single “We Uh Shoot” with Lil Durk, stands for He Overcame Obstacles During Pain Or Emotional Trauma.

And on “We Uh Shoot,” Polo teams up with the perfect person to represent that concept in Lil Durk. Both of the Windy City rappers grew up heavily entrenched in street life, but at the same time, both have distanced themselves from a lot of that aspect of their artistic expression. Both rap a lot about how their experiences shaped them — and yes, traumatized them — but also have more optimistic outlooks in their music than many of their Second City compatriots, many of whom went the other way and got downright nihilistic during the drill days.

H.O.O.D. P.O.E.T. has seen a bit of a rough rollout; initially announced nearly a year ago in August 2023, the album was pushed back a few weeks later in light of Polo’s arrest for kidnapping, robbery, and assault charges. After getting back to business in February of this year with “Sorrys & Ferraris,” he was derailed again by legal trouble, this time an arrest in New York on weapons charges.

With the album’s new release date just a week away, Polo’s given himself less time for getting into trouble, and that should be good news for fans.

You can listen to “We Uh Shoot” up top.

H.O.O.D. P.O.E.T. is due on 8/9 via Columbia Records. You can find more info here.
