According to Polo G, his brother, rapper Trench Baby, needs to be released from prison as soon as possible. On Wednesday (Nov. 13), G posted an Instagram post asking for his fans to chant for the release of his brother. He wrote, “Free trench just cuz I ain’t said it in a while I love lil bro even when we don’t see [eye emoji] to [eye emoji]. I’m his big brother I always have and always will play a protective roll no matter how much he feel like he can hold his own dats my real blood and can’t sh** change that but us [100 emoji][100 emoji].”
Polo and Trench were arrested in July for illegal firearm following a raid of the rapper’s Los Angeles home. The arrest led to Trench Baby being sentenced by a judge for violations in September. Before Trench Baby’s Los Angeles arrest, the rapper was wanted in a robbery case and was taken into police custody. Altercations between Polo G’s mother and sister have made his family issues public over the summer.
Polo G continues to have run-ins with police since his brother arrest. The “3 Headed Goat” hitmaker was arrested for weapon possession in October. The Los Angeles Sherifs would release the rap star after a three-day detainment. In accordance with Section 849(b)(1) of the California Penal Code, his release was justified by the following statement: “The officer is satisfied that there are insufficient grounds for making a criminal complaint against the person arrested.”
Polo G is headlining “The Hood Poet Tour,” a nationwide concert supporting his latest album. “I’ve always put my heart into my music, and now I’m bringing that energy to the stage,” he said in a press release. “This tour is for the fans who’ve been with me since day one and for everyone who’s been part of this journey. I can’t wait to share this experience with y’all.” The new album features G-Herbo, Offset, Lil Durk, GloRilla, and Future. The tour’s supporting acts are VonOff1700 and Diany Dior.
Polo G had his fans impatiently waiting for a new album for three whole years. It didn’t help that a fair number of people weren’t the biggest Hall of Fame apologists either. There was some belief out there that the Chicago rapper and singer was losing some of his touch and drive, to an extent. Given all of that, there was hope that he would get back to quality that was present on THE GOAT and Die A Legend. Unfortunately, when he came back in early August with the highly teased HOOD POET, some were let down due to the lack of chances or updates made to his sound.
The “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” mentality is something Polo G seems to live by and it’s carrying into “S.I.P.” At times, this method works to his advantage, as his hardcore supporters appreciate the lore and his come-up. Both areas are covered on this introspective cut, as talks about his current mental state and how his unstable childhood may have influenced some of the decisions he makes today. With this coming so soon after HOOD POET, there’s some real speculation from Genius and his contemporaries that a 2.0 version could be arriving sometime soon. For now, check out the track on DSPs or wait until 5 p.m. to watch the premiere of its music video.
I kept f***in’ up, I’m the one that hurt my own feelings I’m up twenty million, still be tryna go back home killin’ Know these drugs hurt my health, told me, “Quit,” but I don’t listen High, but I stay to myself, I’m always in my zone, chillin’ Always bound for a set back, fuckin’ with the wrong b****es Broski fed up, he vent to me, I hear his tone switchin’
According to TMZ, Polo G was detained days ahead of his HOOD POET Tour. The outlet claims on October 19 Polo G was arrested on a new weapons charge but has since been released.
A law enforcement source told TMZ that Polo G was initially pulled over in San Fernando Valley, California for speeding. After that officers searched his vehicle, which allegedly yielded a loaded firearm.
By 5:33 p.m. local time, Polo G had been processed and assigned a housing location in the Van Nuys jail according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department database (viewable here).
Today (October 21), Polo G’s listing was updated to confirm Polo G had been released at 4:55 p.m. local time today. Polo G’s reason reason cites code 49B1. This code indicates that a person was released without bail due to an insufficient complaint. The release reason is marked as the warrantless detainment “RLSED PER 849(B)(1)PC A DETENTION ONLY,” which means “the officer is satisfied that there are insufficient grounds for making a criminal complaint against the person arrested” according to California legislative website.
The file states Polo G is not scheduled to appear in court for the matter. Polo G has not publicly addressed the incident.
According to a recent report from TMZ, Taurus Bartlett, who is known to the Hip Hop world as Polo G, was arrested over the weekend after police found a loaded gun in his car during a traffic stop in Los Angeles.
Polo was allegedly speeding in the San Fernando Valley on Saturday afternoon when police pulled him over. After the LAPD conducted a search of his vehicle, during which they retrieved a loaded handgun. He was arrested and charged with felony possession of a concealed weapon.
Polo is currently still behind bars, which can actually create an even larger issue due to the fact that his Hood Poet Tour with Skilla Baby is set for its first stop on Thursday in Denver.
Chicago-based visionary Cole Bennett started out shooting for up-and-coming teens and twenty-something blog favorites, but in the past five years, he has become one of rap’s foremost music video directors, working with top names like Eminem, J. Cole, Lil Durk, and more. He’s even shot for actor Jack Black, delivering a colorful video for Black’s Super Mario Bros. Movie crowd-pleaser, “Peaches.”
“I was a very visual person, but I never knew that I loved music videos,” Bennett said in a 2021 XXL interview. “I always had this idea since I was super young of what it would look like if I made a music video.” For nearly a decade, Bennett has been bringing these ideas to life to the praise of the artists he works with and his growing fan base.
With that being said, we decided to scour Bennett’s Lyrical Lemonade page for his best work. Here are the 10 best Cole Bennett-directed music videos.
Honorable Mention: JID & J. Cole — “Off Deez”
Okay, it’s a pretty basic concept with workmanlike execution, but it might be the best song Bennett’s ever done a video for. JID and J. Cole are left turns for Cole Bennett, if you take in the entirety of his filmography, so it was pretty meaningful that the Dreamville cohorts teamed up with him on this standout from JID’s DiCaprio 2. It’d be nice to see them do it again.
10. Ski Mask The Slump God — “Catch Me Outside”
An early standout from both Bennett and Ski Mask The Slump God, “Catch Me Outside” perfectly illustrates the possibilities of a limited budget when you’ve got unlimited imagination. Awash with eye-popping visual effects, “Catch Me Outside” offers a prime example of Cole’s early style; it’s raw, but flashes of his future brilliance shine throughout. Many of the techniques Bennett used here eventually became hallmarks of his style, and with polish, set off the concepts of his future videos with Cordae and Eminem.
9. Central Cee — “Doja”
As “Doja” is one of Bennett’s more recent videos, its simplicity might seem out of place in a list featuring so many brain-bending, colorful visuals. But it also marks Bennett’s transition from colorful collaborator to kingmaker; Central Cee is a star stateside after working with Bennett, making the most of essentially an indie budget to secure the coveted director’s services and show he belongs on the biggest stage.
8. Jack Harlow — “What’s Poppin”
While the visuals are pretty tame for a Cole Bennett production, Harlow’s “What’s Poppin” video is still representative of the elements that have made Bennett’s videos so eye-catching and amusing. Even the low-key imagery mirrors Jack’s tongue-in-cheek humor, highlighting and elevating it with some juxtaposed elements as bottle service and satin sheets at a late-night diner and a woman “smoking” a french fry like a cigarette. It’s also impossible to discount what the video did for Harlow’s career, taking him from an indie unknown to a potential chart-topper with 170 million views.
7. Drake — “Another Late Night” Feat. Lil Yachty
Say what you want about Drake, but “Another Late Night,” at least visually, has been the height of his last couple of rough years. Drake and Yachty have great chemistry, and despite the relatively straightforward treatment, the video manages to be eye-catching and stand out from the rest of Drake’s admittedly wonky catalog.
6. Lil Durk — “Kanye Krazy”
Bennett’s referential style comes to a head in Durk’s “Kanye Krazy” video. Pulling from infamous clips from the titular auteur’s oeuvre and public outbursts, Durk reimagines the videos for “Runaway,” “Bound 2,” and “I Love It” — specifically, the moments in which Kanye’s mental illness seems to have gotten the better of him, for better or worse. This was just after Drake’s “Laugh Now Cry Later” had put Durk back on the national map, so to speak, so the cheeky visuals helped aid in lending mainstream audiences a better sense of Durk’s personality outside his harrowing drill stories.
5. BabyTron — “100 Bars”
BabyTron, like Central Cee’s “Doja,” is a more recent addition to Bennett’s filmography, albeit one with a much higher concept. It’s executed deliriously well, with a new BabyTron outfit/persona for each of the titular “100 Bars” and seamless transitions between each. It’s a format that Bennett would return to with Eminem’s “Tobey,” but it’s impressive that the Detroit and Chicago natives were able to make this work without the benefit of a huge star (and the accompanying budget). BabyTron, for all the lethargy of his flow on the song, also appears to be having a ball, as does comedian Andy Milonakis in his cameo role.
4. Eminem — “Godzilla”
“Godzilla” is the moment Cole Bennett “made it,” in the sense that he began working with established megastars like Eminem in addition to the SoundCloud standouts in his own DIY cohort. Fittingly, the increased budget came along with some stunning visual effects to spice up the flow of the video’s narrative while enhancing Bennett’s trademark surrealism. Em gets punched in the face by Mike Tyson, breathes fire, vomits Legos, and performs surgery alongside longtime collaborator Dr. Dre. And speaking of collaborators, “Godzilla” is a hallmark moment for Marshall too; it’s the first time he really embraced the SoundCloud rappers he’d formerly spent huge segments of his albums belittling.
3. Polo G — “My All”
Of all Cole Bennett’s most frequent collaborators, he most frequently turns in his best work with hometown artists like Juice WRLD and Polo G. In the video for “My All,” the Chi-Town natives tone down the usual comedic elements of Cole’s catalog in favor of something more emotionally resonant. It looks simple, but it’s not; a seated Polo performs the lyrics as a montage of memories both celebratory and traumatic, scroll behind him. The fourth wall break at the end is a fun surprise.
2. Cordae & Juice WRLD — “Doomsday”
My personal favorite out of the videos presented here, “Doomsday” takes a simple concept and adds stupendous visual flair with the aid of facial overlay technology. This is how you pay homage to departed artists; Cordae puts on a clinic as both himself and his late friend Juice WRLD, while Cole puts deepfake algos to an actual artistic use that doesn’t require stealing the work of real artists.
1. Juice WRLD — “Lucid Dreams”
The video that put Bennett on my personal radar, “Lucid Dreams” is far from his most stunning. But it’s hard to argue with a billion views; “Lucid Dreams” is the song that made Juice a star, it’s still his biggest song to date, and the video displays Cole’s gift for dreamlike visuals, which also fits the theme of the song.
The Chicago drill scene has been shouldered by names such as Lil Durk, Chief Keef, and G Herbo for about a decade. But with so many aspiring rappers out there, the changing of the guard is going to happen at some point. Someone who could be a face of the cutthroat subgenre is VonOff1700. The 21-year-old does already have a few hits under his belt such as “Opps On Deck”, “Free Brick Freestyle”, and “S.O.B.”. All of those are on his 2024 debut project, #FreeMyHoodF***YoHood. Thanks to its success, VonOff1700 is now getting a chance to work with Polo G and G Herbo.
You can hear some of the influences, especially in the production and in Von’s delivery on “Dead N****s”, the trio’s first collab. What makes this single a winner in our books is the eerie woodwind beat, and everyone’s aggressive verses and mic presence. Those two qualities are always things you can count on from Chicago drill artists to provide, and those are here and then some. Also helping “Dead N****s” is Von’s clunky but still catchy chorus. Overall, this all the ingredients to be a major track for him, and if you check out the YouTube video below, you’ll see that the view count helps prove our point.
Disrespect us and this s*** gon’ get ugly (Get ugly) I stay with my mask, it’ll go up in public Ten ain’t enough, tell them n****s to duck (His dead a**) Caught his a** tryna eat McDonalds, we lovin’ it (Lovin’ it) We just f***, get out, no cuddlin’ (You know that) Brr-bah-bah, the switch keep stutterin’ (Grrah)

In a new interview with DJ Akademiks, Polo G was asked for his thoughts on the Drake and Kendrick Lamar battle. The battle, which ended between the rappers in May, still rages on today through their respective fanbases. The climactic track, “Not Like Us,” turned into a victory lap for Lamar, who created one of the most popular songs of 2024.
Polo G did not want to pick sides or a winner. Akademiks changed his line of questioning, instead asking for his favorite song from the battle. Polo settled on “Not Like Us,” becoming the latest rapper to praise the track in the last few months. Akademiks, who has often been critical of Kendrick Lamar, could not deny the track’s success. He called it a “bop,” which is more praise than he usually reserves for Lamar’s music.
“Not Like Us” has been a massive success for Kendrick Lamar. It was his first #1 single since “HUMBLE.” from his 2017 album, DAMN. The track recently passed 650 million Spotify streams, becoming the most-streamed diss track on the platform. Earlier this month, it received the first of what will probably be many award nominations, getting a nod at the VMAs for Song of the Year. It’s become such a big track that Michael Rubin had to ban it from his Fourth of July party because Drake attended the festivities.
Polo G recently released Hood Poet, his fourth studio album, on August 9. The album features collaborations with Future, GloRilla, Offset, and others. It’s received tepid critic reviews, though fans of his are enjoying the new music. Over the last few weeks, he’s done some press for it. He was on The Breakfast Club earlier this month, and now he’s on Akademiks’ show for the same purpose. Akademiks will not be the only person to ask Polo about his thoughts on the Drake and Kendrick Lamar battle, as it’s the hottest story in hip-hop this year. But, he can say he was the first to get the Chicago rapper’s perspective.
