Why Is PETA Protesting Pharrell?

Pharrell had a screening of his new biopic Piece By Piece at the Toronto International Film Festival yesterday (September 10), but the proceedings were interrupted by a PETA protestor. But, why?

Why Is PETA Protesting Pharrell?

Since early 2023, Pharrell has been the Men’s Creative Director for Louis Vuitton. After the screening incident, PETA Executive Vice President Tracy Reiman issued a statement after the incident, saying, “We would be happy to stop disrupting Pharrell’s appearances but despite a lot of lip service, he’s yet to ditch fur and exotic skins. Pharrell can decide in a heartbeat, today, to use his power for good and stop being complicit in cruelty — it’s quite easy to be kind.”

The statement also notes the protestor “blasted” Pharrell “for his disgraceful use of wild-animal skins and fur.”

After the protester was removed from the screening, Pharrell said to the audience:

“Let me address that. You know, Rome wasn’t made in a day, and sometimes when you have plans to change things and situations, you have to get in a position of power and of influence, where you can change people’s minds progression. That’s not necessarily the way to do it, and sitting in my position, when I have conversations on behalf of organizations like that, unbeknownst to them, they come out here and do themselves a disservice. That’s OK: When that change comes, everybody in this room, will remember that I told you we’re actually working on that, and if she would have just asked me, I would have told her. But instead, she wanted to repeat herself.”

Pharrell Williams Directly Deals With PETA Protestor At Private Screening Of “Piece By Piece”

Pharrell Williams is rolling out the red carpet for his upcoming LEGO biopic, Piece By Piece. The film is going to officially hit theaters on October 11, meaning we are one month away on the dot. To build some extra anticipation for the animated motion picture, the multi-hyphenate held a private screening for it. However, as Pharrell Williams was winding things down, a PETA protestor briefly interrupted the event, according to Uproxx. The woman actually was able to get onto the stage, sign and all. Speaking of which, the message was, “Pharrell: Stop Killing Animals For Fashion”. Most likely, this relates to his involvement with the French luxury apparel brand, Louis Vuitton.

He does hold a high position with the iconic company, as he is the Men’s Creative Director. Throughout the PETA supporter’s appearance both on the stage and off it, she repeatedly said, “Stop torturing animals!”. In a scenario like this, there’s high probability that a lot of people would escalate the situation further by yelling and scolding her. But Pharrell was extremely mature and graceful during the entire face-to-face interaction. “I know, you’re right”, and “I’m working on it”, he replied in a cool manner.

Pharrell Williams Addresses PETA Supporter & Backlash

He even said “God bless you” and encouraged the audience to repeat that and clap for the woman. Eventually, she was taken away by security and afterwards, Pharrell decided to address the now elephant in the room. “Let me address that. You know, Rome wasn’t made in a day, and sometimes when you have plans to change things and situations, you have to get in a position of power and of influence, where you can change people’s minds progression”, he began. “That’s not necessarily the way to do it, and sitting in my position, when I have conversations on behalf of organizations like that, unbeknownst to them, they come out here and do themselves a disservice”. He then concluded with, “That’s okay: When that change comes, everybody in this room, will remember that I told you we’re actually working on that, and if she would have just asked me, I would have told her. But instead, she wanted to repeat herself”.

The crowd the clapped for how the multi-talent handled everything. However, PETA Executive Vice President Tracy Reiman was not as forgiving. She issued a statement following this protest, saying, “We would be happy to stop disrupting Pharrell’s appearances but despite a lot of lip service, he’s yet to ditch fur and exotic skins. Pharrell can decide in a heartbeat, today, to use his power for good and stop being complicit in cruelty — it’s quite easy to be kind”. Pharrell Explains Why He Didn’t Tell Kendrick Lamar And Jay-Z They Were Going To Appear In Lego Form In ‘Piece By Piece’

Piece By Piece is a unique documentary, in that it tells the story of Pharrell Williams through Lego. But the legendary musician and producer behind “Happy,” “Get Lucky,” and “Drop It Like It’s Hot” didn’t mention the colorful bricks format when he and director Morgan Neville reached out for talking head interviews from the likes of Jay-Z, Kendrick Lamar, and Snoop Dogg.

“We purposely did not tell anyone that that would be the finished product. We wanted people to just answer the questions and really give their full, unedited reactions to the opportunity to do the interviews,” Williams confessed to Variety. “Because if we would’ve said, ‘Okay, this is going to be in Lego,’ then people would have sort of curved what they were saying.”

He continued, “We didn’t want them to be influenced by what we wanted. We wanted the purest part. And I feel like part of the magic of what makes this film pop the way it does is because it’s so vivid and it’s not scripted.”

Outside of the three rappers listed above, Piece By Piece also features Gwen Stefani, Timbaland, Justin Timberlake, Busta Rhymes, and Pusha T.

Piece By Piece comes out in theaters on October 11. You can find out more here.

Pharrell Williams Pens Inspiring “Piece By Piece” For Upcoming LEGO Animated Biopic

Pretty soon, we are going to learn more about the mastermind that is Pharell Williams. According to Rolling Stone, his LEGO animated biopic, Piece By Piece, will be in theaters by October 11 with Focus Features being the distributor. The trailer for the film was released back in June and it will depict the life and influential career of the Virginia Beach, Virginia native. Adding some extra excitement to the movie is the inclusion of multiple hip-hop icons and their LEGO avatars. Kendrick Lamar, Snoop Dogg, JAY-Z, and more will all have roles in what should be an interesting watch. With the multi-hyphenate being behind a project like this, an original soundtrack was almost a sure thing. That’s why it’s no surprise that Pharrell Williams has dropped the first/self-titled single for it today, “Piece By Piece”.

The veteran is no stranger to writing catchy and kid-friendly compositions for films and there might not be anyone better, at least in hip-hop. “Piece By Piece” is a record that encourages people to embrace the journey instead of sprinting to the finish line. Pharrell has certainly paid his dues in the music industry, so this track should fit right at home with his film’s potential overarching messages. Piece By Piece has been viewed at by movie critics already at the Telluride Film Festival in Colorado, and so far, it’s gotten mixed reviews. However, things could change once it gets a wider screening.

Pharrell Rocks Out To Unreleased Clipse Collab In New Album Preview

The upcoming reunion album from Clipse will be a massive moment in hip-hop today, and the project’s producer Pharrell is just as excited as fans. Moreover, a new video emerged on social media of him vibing out to one of the duo’s unreleased cuts, which will presumably appear on this LP. The snippet itself sounds as simultaneously smooth and grimy as you’d expect, as you can hear one of the Virginia MCs spit some bars over round drums and some light synths. During a previous interview with Vulture, the brothers explained why Skateboard P will solely handle their team-up’s production and how he impacted its sound and direction.

Pharrell producing everything is also an ode to the type of music and the type of albums we want to make,” Pusha T elaborated about this upcoming Clipse album. “We still want to make full bodies of work. These are movies, man. These aren’t just songs. This isn’t just a collection of joints we went in and banged out. This is arguing. This is a problem. These are people passionate about their opinions and making sure that everybody’s on their A-game. Listen, I can be mad at the engineer, you know what I’m saying? Even he has to be on point. I think that’s the level of meticulousness that a Clipse fan looks for.”

Pharrell Is Loving This Clipse Preview

Furthermore, we still don’t know when this album will come out, but we do know that Clipse, Pharrell, and company are expecting one last feature for it before it’s all officially ready to drop. Pusha T recently revealed this on the Ghetto Runways podcast. “I’m so excited about this new Clipse album,” he stated. “That’s what I’m on right now. It’s absolutely finished. Just waiting on a feature.” “Just waiting on the feature, bro,” Push told the camera.

Meanwhile, Clipse isn’t the only group that Pharrell appeared in headlines with during the past few weeks. Lupe Fiasco attempted to revive their supergroup with Kanye West (Child Rebel Solider AKA CRS) via the release of a track called “SHRINK.” While this is an unofficial drop, it does provide a glimpse into the future we never got to witness from this trio. Hopefully this new album from Pusha T and No Malice doesn’t meet a similar fate.

Coi Leray And Pharrell Have Swag That’s ‘Not In The Store’ In Their Animated Video For ‘Doodles’

In September, the “Stoodio” behind Doodles is premiering an animated feature, Dullsville And The Doodleverse, with a soundtrack curated by the brand’s Chief Brand Officer Pharrell Williams. Today, they’ve released the first single from said soundtrack, “Not In The Store,” featuring Pharrell and Coi Leray. The video is animated in the same cutesy style as the overall Doodleverse, which Coi’s daisy-faced avatar dancing and rapping its way through a colorful fantasy world. Check out the trailer for Dullsville And The Doodleverse below.

In case you haven’t heard of it, Doodles bills itself as “a next-generation entertainment company focused on immersive storytelling through the creation and distribution of live and digital experiences, original content, and lifestyle products.” It started out as an NFT collection on OpenSea, with users buying the cutesy digital avatars (which look like something out of Adventure Time), and using them to interact with other users by way of various platforms like Discord and, eventually, a Doodles metaverse. Picture Roblox by way of those Bored Apes NFTs. Users can apparently dress up their avatars with real-life brands like Adidas and Arizona Tea, which… I guess is one way to do that (you could also just buy the clothes in real life and wear them outside while you touch grass).

Here’s a look at one of the promotional trailers for the project below. You can watch Coi Leray’s “Not In The Store” video above.

Pharrell Taps Another Longtime Collaborator, Pusha T, As The Latest Louis Vuitton Ambassador

Ever since being made the head menswear designer of Louis Vuitton, Pharrell Williams has made it a point to feature his famous friends and top collaborators in the company’s plans, both in front of the cameras and behind the scenes. His first Louis campaign prominently featured Rihanna, while both Clipse and Jay-Z appeared during his first Louis Vuitton fashion show. This year, he’s already collaborated on a collection with musical protégé, Tyler The Creator, and today, it was announced that Pusha T will be Louis Vuitton’s newest brand ambassador.

According to Women’s Wear Daily, a statement from the fashion house noted the two artists’ longstanding connection and praised Pusha’s “commitment to artistry” and “strong personal style.” It reads, “His ambassadorial nomination at Louis Vuitton is a testament to his commitment to artistry and a strong personal style, both echoing the maison’s own dedication to unique expression across fashion and culture.”

Clothing isn’t the only thing Push and Pharrell have been working on. Last month, Pusha told Vulture he and his brother (once again going by just Malice) have reunited as Clipse and have been recording a new album produced by Pharrell. The duo is also set to appear in Williams’ upcoming biopic, Piece By Piece which has been animated in the style of The Lego Movie.

Pusha T And No Malice Are Making A New Clipse Album That’s Entirely Produced By Pharrell

The Neptunes (Pharrell and Chad Hugo) are a major part of the Clipse (Pusha T and No Malice) story: The production duo has been at the helm of all four Clipse albums, including their latest, 2009’s Til The Casket Drops. Now, Clipse is readying their first album in 15 years, and the whole thing is produced by Pharrell.

In a new Vulture interview, Pusha T said, “Pharrell producing everything is also an ode to the type of music and the type of albums we want to make. We still want to make full bodies of work. These are movies, man. These aren’t just songs. This isn’t just a collection of joints we went in and banged out.”

He also noted that he and No Malice didn’t work with Pharrell’s Neptunes partner Chad Hugo on the project.

Elsewhere, Pusha said about the album, “I think the album shows the supreme maturation of a rap duo. I think this is where you get the difference between taste and filler. This music is curated. This is a high taste-level piece of work. You can only have that level of taste when you have the fundamentals down to a science. I think it’s been definitely missing. Then there’s the competitive aspect.”

No Malice added, “This is smart basketball. It’s fundamentals. And not only that, it’s authenticity. It’s what rap should look like if you’re real about your craft, real about your experience, real about your storytelling. It’s bringing the fans along to see the growth, not trying to fit in or fabricate. It just seems like in other genres of music, they have the luxury of growing. For some reason, we act like we’re not supposed to evolve. This is what the true evolution of the Clipse looks like. It’s just good to be able to show that and still have high-level raps.”

Tommy Richman Teases New Song “Devil Is A Lie” And It Slaps

Tommy Richman has been making music for nearly a decade, but 2024 is his year. The singer broke out in a big way with the single “Million Dollar Baby.” Not only was a viral sensation on TikTok, but it crossed over and went number two on the Billboard Hot 100. Richman is now an R&B star. The pressure now, of course, is to prove that he’s not a one hit wonder. We’ve seen lots of “Million Dollar Baby” singers come and go. The next Richman single is going to be crucial, and it sounds like he’s got it under control.

Richman posted a teaser of his upcoming song, “Devil Is a Lie,” on TikTok on June 6. The brief clip sees him not only singing the song, but doing so on what appears to be a set for the music video. He sings in front of a car, and and posts up from a different angle where a camera can be seen moving past him. It’s led fans to believe that “Devil Is a Lie” is not only coming soon, but will have an official video attached as well. The song itself is ridiculously catchy. It captures the same bouncy, hooky energy of Richman’s first big smash, but with a throwback 2000’s feel. Many fans have rightfully pointed out that the singer seems to be channeling vintage Neptunes. The beat definitely sounds like something Pharrell Williams and Chad Hugo would have cooked up for Nelly back in the day.

Tommy Richman Has Another Hit In The Works

This makes perfect sense, given Tommy Richman’s affiliation with another R&B star, Brent Fayiaz. He had a standout appearance on the Faiyaz mixtape Larger Than Life, which also revived the 2000s sound they both grew up idolizing. Richman even signed to Faiyaz’s creative agency, ISO Supremacy, furthering their like-mindedness. It’s also worth noting that Richman hails from Virginia, which is where artists like Faiyaz and the Neptunes originated. The singer spoke on the impact of VA’s musical history on his own working process during a 2023 interview with Miami New Times.

“There’s a lot of passion through the scene back home,” Richman explained. “And I feel like it’s because a lot of people don’t get a fair shake. It’s really hard to have your voice heard there. That’s probably why a lot of people from Virginia left, like Pharrell and Timbaland. It’s kind of key for an artist to leave their nest. That way, you can appreciate where you come from.” Richman wants honor the legacy of these artists, and “Devil Is a Lie” suggests he’s doing a great job.
