Big Sean is entering a new era. The man who made “A$$” has become a family man. He’s not trying to hide it, either. The music video for his new single, “On Up,” is dedicated to his son, and sees the Detroit legend wax poetic on getting older. He’s wholesome now, so it shouldn’t really be a surprise that he linked up with the most wholesome artist in hip-hop history: Will Smith. Big Sean chopped it up with Smith on TikTok, with the latter providing some useful tips on how to navigate the music industry.
Big Sean posted the conversation on August 5. “@WillSmith dropping [gem emoji]’s,” he wrote in the caption. Sure enough, the former Fresh Prince made some good points. He urged the Detroit rapper to be mindful of change, and be willing to embrace it. If a person does’t embrace change, it’s going to be a difficult transition. “When you hit the edge of the material world and… you know, I call it cliff top,” Smith explained. “Cliff top is the opposing aspect of rock bottom. When somebody hits rock bottom and can go no lower, you need to get your sh*t together or you die.”

Will Smith Urged Big Sean To Embrace Change
’s While the notion of falling off a cliff sounds frightening, Will Smith noted that it was also freeing. “Cliff top is either you find God,” the artist explained. “Or you die ’cause there’s nothing else here for you.” Smith’s words have additional resonance, given the setbacks his career was dealt after his infamous Oscars slap. He has fallen off the cliff he’s describing and managed to bounce back, to borrow a Big Sean phrase. It’s all seemingly in line with the path that Sean has been on as of late. The rapper has not only changed his approach to recording, but to art in general. His first book, Go Higher, is scheduled for release later in the year. It will focus on personal well being, according to the rapper’s press release.
Big Sean has also displayed a mature approach to rap beef. He assured fans he was cool with Kendrick Lamar and Kanye West, despite their past disagreements. He also told Charlamagne tha God that he’s more interested in raising a family than he is topping the charts. More recently, Big Sean tweeted out plans to promote a more family-friendly vibe at his concerts. “‘On Up’ gimme that cook out feel,” he wrote. “Local food vendors, merch, performance that the whole family can come to.”

Ashanti Celebrates Mother’s Birthday Amid Nelly Arrest Reactions
Ashanti is in a good mood. The R&B singer took to Instagram to celebrate her mom’s birthday. She posed alongside her mother and various members of her family for a “special night.” The timing of Ashanti’s post was not lost on the internet, though. While the singer was living it up with her family, her husband, Nelly, was being locked up. The rapper was taken into custody on traffic charges the morning of August 7. Fans were shocked by the radically different headlines these two artists prompted. Especially given the way they were shared on social media.
Ashanti has not commented on Nelly’s arrest. Instead, she praised her mother and the recapped the night that she had. “Recap mom’s bday,” she wrote. “This was such a special night. Happy birthday again mom. I love you more than anything.” Ashanti wrote that the date in which the celebration went down was on July 13, so it didn’t actually occur the same night Nelly was taken into custody. Still, the decision to not address the legal elephant in the room seems intentional on the singer’s part.

Ashanti Hasn’t Commented On Nelly’s Recent Arrest
Nelly was taken into custody at 4:45 am on Wednesday morning. The rapper was initially arrested on a failure-to-appear warrant that went back to a St. Louis traffic charge. After he was arrested, though, the local authorities discovered the rapper had four ecstasy pills on his person. NBC reports that Nelly was subsequently released by Maryland police. The rapper’s lawyer, Scott Rosenblum, issued a statement picking apart the character of the arresting officer. Rosenblum claimed that Nelly was “targeted by an overzealous, out of line officer” who “paraded him through the casino.” The lawyer also asserted that Nelly was not ultimately charged with drug possession.
Ashanti and Nelly have been romantically involved for decades. The two initially dated in the 2000s, before reuniting in 2023. The second time proved the charm, and the artists had a child before tying the knot in December of the same year. “The growth has been like superb, you know, like on both ends,” the singer told Entertainment Tonight. “We are both at a place where like before, sometimes we would argue and walk out, slam the door, and not talk for a few days.” Ashanti will no doubt help Nelly get through this latest ordeal.

50 Cent is a watch connoisseur. He’s up there with JAY-Z in terms of impressive wrist wear collections. The rapper’s latest acquisition, however, has an additional sentimental value. 50 took to Instagram on August 6 to flex a brand new Rolex watch from Turbo Tourbillion. The Rolex is a sight to behold, with a custom design from New York jeweler Tajia Diamonds and a staggering price tag of $5 million. 50 Cent justified the cost, however, by noting that the Rolex is a tribute to his late grandfather.
The rapper revealed that a photo of his grandfather was actually printed on the face of the watch. “Our time here is limited,” he wrote in the caption. “I want to thank you in advance for not wasting mine.” It’s a touching tribute, and one that makes sense given how important 50 Cent’s grandparents were in his life. The rapper’s grandfather, Curtis Jackson, Jr., was a particularly huge influence on him. 50 told Now Afro Beats that Jackson, Jr. effectively raised him from a young age. “We were living on my grandfather’s income,” he recalled. “He was real old-fashioned. He is a representation of tradition for me.”

50 Cent’s Grandfather Raised Him From An Early Age
50 Cent credited Curtis Jackson, Sr. with shaping the way he perceived wealth and the value of hard work. “If you understand where you’re at financially, you make logical decisions versus if you didn’t have an understanding because he was handling things,” the rapper explained. “Then you could feel deprived. It could feel like there’s something else out there that you’re not experiencing.” It’s ironic, then, that the rapper would spend a whopping $5 million on a time piece as tribute, but the intention is undeniable.
A day after Jackson, Sr.’s passing, 50 Cent memorialized him on Instagram. He posted several photos of his grandfather, and thanked him for everything he did to provide. “My old man is [a] tuff act to follow, he sacrificed for all of us,” the rapper asserted. “He made me smile every time I saw him.” Jackson, Sr.’s wife Beulah, passed away from cancer in 2022. 50 was similarly effusive in his praise for his grandma, telling Big Issue that she was the person he loved the most. “None of them impacted like when my grandmother died,” he admitted. “She was the love of my life.”

JAY-Z Recorded An Iconic Drake Feature After A Grueling Two Hour Show
Drake and JAY-Z have a lot in common. Both are among the biggest rappers of all time. Both have parlayed their success into other ventures. And both maintained relevance for decades. It’s no wonder these two see each other as kindred spirits. Drake and JAY-Z have collaborated five times since 2009 (six if you count “Off That”). “Talk Up” has become a fan favorite over the years, and a recent anecdote from JAY’s engineer, Young Guru, has given fans even more respect for the 2018 release.
Drake initiated the whole thing. The rapper dropped 100 GBs of unreleased material on August 6, which included footage of him and JAY-Z making “Talk Up.” Young Guru saw the footage, and decided to shed light on the unique circumstances in which the song came together. He detailed the experience on his IG Story, and revealed that JAY-Z recorded it right after a concert. “Hov has to do a verse [for Drake],” he recalled. “We are on On the Run 2. Remember I’m the DJ. Hov hit me and simply said ‘Set up a studio in the venue’ I’m like ‘what’? But of course I get it done… He literally wrote that verse after doing a full two-hour show.”

Young Guru Shared The JAY-Z Story On Instagram
Guru’s account lines up with the footage that Drake released. The Toronto rapper is asked whether he plans to rest, but he insisted he stay up until JAY-Z sent his verse over. “I don’t want him to hit me and be like, ‘Hey, what do you think of this?’ and I’m not there to respond,” he said. JAY-Z and Guru were under the wire, but they managed to get the verse done in time. The latter recalls the lofi tech they had access to on such short notice. “I had to tether my phone to my computer to send the session to @ovo40,” he explained. “I made it too the club just in time for my set.”
Young Guru and JAY-Z were thrilled with outcome. Guru did note, on his IG Story, though, that the best musical moments often come from stressful situations. “When y’all hear this work I sometimes wonder if you understand how much goes into it,” he wrote. “Classic Nights!!!! And I killed my set lol.” “Talk Up” is not mentioned as often as other Drake and JAY-Z collabs like “Light Up” or “Pound Cake,” but the story behind it does make it an extra boost. Latto Drops Stacked Tracklist For New Album “SUGAR HONEY ICED TEA”
Latto has been building up the hype for her third studio album. She’s been dropping singles all summer, and one of them “Put It on da Floor,” peaked at number 13 on the Billboard Hot 100. Well, the remix with Cardi B, but the point still stands. Latto has more eyes on her than ever, and SUGAR HONEY ICED TEA is right around the corner. The rapper dropped the tracklist for the anticipated project on August 7th, and suffice to say, it’s loaded with superstar features.
We knew Cardi B was going to be on the album. She nearly steals the show with her flow on the aforementioned remix. We didn’t expect, however, the firepower that would be littered throughout the rest of SUGAR HONEY ICED TEA. Young Nudy and Teezo Touchdown will drop verses on the songs “Shrimps & Grits” and “Prized Possession,” respectively. Hunxho will also pop up on the provocatively titled “Copper Love.” The rest of the feature spots are dedicated to Latto’s female peers. In addition to Cardi, Coco Jones and Ciara will provide R&B hooks on “Ear Candy” and “Good to You.” Mariah the Scientist will bring her trademark swagger to “Look What You Did.”

Nelly’s Attorney Slams Cops Over Alleged Ecstasy Possession Arrest
Earlier today, it was reported that Nelly was arrested by the Missouri State Highway Patrol at the Hollywood Casino. Allegedly, officers found four ecstasy pills on his person and discovered that the artist did not have insurance. For obvious reasons, the arrest took fans by surprise. After all, Nelly is currently expecting his first child with his fiancée Ashanti. It’s unclear exactly when she’s due, but it looks like their baby could arrive any day now.
His attorney, however, is firing back. In a recent chat with TMZ, Scott Rosenblum told the outlet that his client was “targeted by an overzealous, out of line officer.” According to him, the hitmaker had won a major jackpot at the casino. An officer then allegedly falsely claimed they needed to run a background check before giving him his winnings.

Nelly’s Attorney, Scott Rosenblum, Addresses Performer’s Arrest
Police claim that at this point, they learned that he had an active warrant for failing to have insurance during a previous traffic stop. After that, they reportedly cuffed the performer and walked him through the casino to be seen by everyone there. Rosenblum insists that Nelly was not given notice of the warrant, which was issued in December from a traffic stop in 2018. He thinks that if Nelly wasn’t a celebrity, he simply would have been informed of the warrant and allowed to leave.
Rosenblum also claims that Nelly has not been charged with drug possession, despite previous reports. Travis Scott and Playboi Carti have devoted fanbases. Seriously, fans love these two artists. They are among the most revered names in the genre, mainly due to the ways in which they experiment with it. And pretty soon, fans will get a chance to witness their shared experimentation in a concert setting. On August 7, Travis Scott and Playboi Carti announced that they will be putting on concerts at the upcoming ComplexCon. Branded “OOCactus,” the concerts will take place on November 16-17, 2024.
Travis Scott and Playboi Carti have appeared on the same bill multiple times in the past. Both of them were at Rolling Loud Europe in July, and Carti joined Scott for a L.A. performance as recently as 2023. The two artists have a kinship, which is what makes their joint announcement all the more exciting. The fun didn’t stop there, though. Scott and Carti decided to tease a snippet of a brand new song minutes after the joint concerts were revealed. The snippet doesn’t have a title, but the snippet is everything fans could want. Lush synths carry the first portion of the snippet, before thundering drums kick in and Travis Scott can be heard vocally riffing.

Travis Scott and Playboi Carti have a storied track record together. The former appeared on “Love Hurts” from Carti’s breakthrough tape, Die Lit, as well as “Green and Purple” and “BACKR00MS. ” Playboi Carti has returned the favor by dropping memorable bars on Scott’s “FE!N.” The “00Cactus” concerts are also an encouraging sign for those who have spent years waiting on Carti’s third studio album. The rapper has been teasing the release of the tentatively titled MUSIC since 2021. There have been dozens of snippets and teaser singles, including the aforementioned “BACKR00MS” with Scott.
Cardo, a frequent Carti collaborator, confirmed that the album is coming soon. The producer claimed that he was putting the finishing touches on it after nearly four years of work. “Me and him have been working on this album for a good four years,” he said in July. “[I’m] gaining some kind of different kind of energy and inspiration from what he’s doing. Seeing what levels he’s going on. That’s how we’re creating all these fun records.” Hopefully fans get to hear new Carti and Travis Scott music at ComplexCon.

Kanye West’s Alleged Nitrous Oxide Supplier Denies Milo Yiannopoulos’ Accusations
Recently, Kanye West’s former chief of staff Milo Yiannopoulos made some shocking claims about the Chicago-born artist’s dentist, Thomas P. Connelly. In an affidavit for a complaint against Connelly, Yiannopoulos accused Connelly of supplying Ye with “enormous quantities of nitrous gas” for “explicitly recreational use.” Reportedly, he also expressed concern for Ye’s wellbeing, citing his alleged “dependence” on the substance.
Yiannopoulos even accused Connelly of accepting upwards of $50K per month in exchange for the substance, despite seeing signs of Ye’s alleged addiction. According to him, Ye discussed nitrous oxide frequently, leading to unpredictable and worrisome behavior.

Thomas P. Connelly Denies Providing Kanye West With Nitrous Oxide For Recreational Use
Now, Connelly has addressed the allegations, denying them and slamming Yiannopoulos in the process. He told TMZ that the claims are “not only factually incorrect but also intentionally misleading,” and accuses Yiannopoulos of making them up simply for attention. Connelly also alleges that Yiannopoulos was trying to intentionally damage his reputation. His affidavit was filed with the Dental Board of California in an attempt to get Connelly’s license suspended. Connelly’s team adds that he sticks to all ethical and legal standards, and doesn’t plan on putting his career on hold despite these unfounded claims.
While Yiannopoulos’ allegations are still unconfirmed, Ye himself has admitted to some substance use, telling Candace Owens back in 2022 that he was drunk during his infamous antisemitic Twitter spree. Specifically, he said he was sipping on Hennessy. The conservative commentator published the interview earlier today, which is expectedly full of many more wild moments.
