Lizzo Breaks Down Her And Adele’s Friendship: ‘She A Ghetto B*tch Like Me’

Being a world-famous musician is an uncommon experience, so it makes sense that the few people who find themselves in that position would lean on each other for support and empathy. It turns out Lizzo and Adele are two such people who have become best buds, which Lizzo just talked about some with Andy Cohen.

Appearing on the SiriusXM show Radio Andy recently, Lizzo said of Adele:

“We’re both Tauruses, and when we’re together, the decibels of how loud we get with our laughter is incredible. We really are super similar and we don’t really f*ck with too many people, but we f*ck with each other.

It’s so funny: At SNL, she texted me. I hadn’t heard from her in a minute, ’cause you know, life. But I was looking at her photo ’cause it’s right outside the dressing room, and she texted me and was like, ‘I hope you kill it this weekend, babes.’ And I was like, ‘Oh my God! I’m looking at you while you…’

So she’s so supportive and she really believes in me. She’s f*cked with me for years. I met her at a Grammy party. I think it was Mark Ronson’s Grammy party years ago and she was like, ‘Oh my God!’ and I was like, ‘This is f*cking Adele!’ I like her. She a ghetto b*tch like me.”

This isn’t the first time Lizzo has discussed her and Adele’s bond; She told People in a December 2021 interview, “She’s been through similar things that I have, and she’s given me really good advice. We have very similar personalities and the way we think, and we just connected in that way. We’re both supreme divas. We know our worth — and we’re also both Tauruses!”

Lizzo Roasts Black Eyes Peas’ Biggest Hits In A ‘Saturday Night Live’ Sketch

Fans know that music aside, Lizzo is a magnetic and entertaining personality. She got to show that off to a larger audience this past weekend when she was both the host and musical guest on Saturday Night Live. Given that music is her day job, it found its way into the show beyond her performances, including in a sketch about Black Eyes Peas, which pokes fun at the group.

The skit was presented as studio footage from a session where the band recorded multiple hits, and after the group performed a bit of “Boom Boom Pow” for producers (Lizzo and Aidy Bryant), Bryant noted, “Those were actually the temp lyrics that we sent to describe the beat of the track.” Lizzo added, “Yeah, you were supposed to replace them with your own lyrics. You know, like, with words.”

After going back and forth on that song some more, they move on to “I Gotta Feeling,” with Lizzo and Bryant showing amazement at the song’s simple lyrics. Bryant then instructed, “Everyone yell a refrain together, something that feels true to who you are as a group.” The band responded, “Mazel tov, l’chaim!”

They also made a nod to “Let’s Get It Started,” or rather, the original version of the song, the controversially titled “Let’s Get R*tarded.” Noting the song’s title is a work in progress, with just “Let’s Get” confirmed so far, Bryant notes, “It has to be something that we can say forever.” Lizzo assured, “We can figure that out later.”

Historical accuracy isn’t necessarily the most important thing in an SNL sketch (for example, this wasn’t actual Black Eyed Peas studio footage), but it’s worth noting (or maybe it isn’t) that the sketch’s fictional recording session was set in 2008, but “Let’s Get It Started” was released in 2004.

Lizzo Was A Retro-Glam Diva For Her ‘SNL’ Performances Of ‘About Damn Time’ And ‘Special’

New music from Lizzo is a good thing in most people’s books, but a new single and a live debut on Saturday Night Live? Now that’s an embarrassment of riches. The pop star and now inclusive shapewear line designer took to the SNL stage tonight after her latest single, “About Damn Time” had only been out for a few days. That didn’t stop her from dubbing it the “song of the summer,” before it even dropped, and showing out for the retro song’s disco-themed music video.

Replicating some of that video’s style for tonight’s live debut, Lizzo and her dancers were clad in glittery neon outfits and performed on a stage lit with colorful bands of lights. The R&B star and her all-female, all women of color band turned out a super funky version of the song, with light choreo and lots of feeling. Check out that performance up top and check out her second performance below. For her second song of the night, Lizzo chose to perform “Special,” the title track off her forthcoming album of the same name, this time in a glamorous pink gown. Since Lizzo was both the musical performer and guest star on tonight’s episode, she appeared in a whole host of skits too, so check those out if you want more.

Lizzo Rediscovers Her Glamour In The Video For Her Disco-Themed Bop, ‘About Damn Time’

Lizzo is gearing up to take over the summer. She gave a head’s up about her goals earlier this week as she teased the release of her latest song, “About Damn Time,” through a confident Instagram video. Lizzo called the record the “song of the summer,” and now that it’s here, there may be some validity to that. “About Damn Time” is an empowering anthem that finds Lizzo overcoming her past doubts and rediscovering her glamour through the uptempo record. The track also arrives with a video that watches her turn the halls of the quiet Stressed And Sexy Support Group building into a colorful and vibrant dancefloor.

Along with the new track, Lizzo announced the title and release date of her upcoming third album. Special will arrive on July 15 and it will also include the previously-released “Rumors” with Cardi B. “I think that the music really is going to speak for itself,” she said about the album in an interview with Zane Lowe on Apple Music according to a press release. “I’m writing songs about love from every direction, and I hope that I can turn a little bit of the fear that’s been running rampant in this world, energetically into love.”

She continued, “I had a lot of fear, and I had to do the work on myself, and this music is some of that work in turning that fear into love. I hope that when people listen to this album, it makes their day just a little bit better, a little bit more filled with love.”

You can watch the video for “About Damn Time” above.

Special is out 7/15 via Nice Life and Atlantic. You can pre-save it here.
