One of the biggest winners from the 2024 Grammys night is undoubtedly Killer Mike. The critically acclaimed rapper won his first Grammy Awards as a lead artist at this year’s award show and his first overall since winning in 2003 for Best Rap Performance By a Duo or Group thanks to “The Whole World” with Outkast. At the 2024 Grammys, Killer Mike won in the Best Rap Performance and Best Rap Song categories for “Scientists & Engineers” with André 3000, Future, and Eryn Allen Kane. He also won in the Best Rap Album for Michael. With these wins, Killer Mike was set to have a celebratory night, but that was interrupted when the rapper was taken away in handcuffs at Los Angeles’ Crypto.com arena.
Why Was Killer Mike Arrested At The Grammys 2024?
The Hollywood Reporter’s Chris Gardner reported that an official on Killer Mike’s team said that it appears that the rapper will be facing a “misdemeanor” charge for an incident that is not connected to anything that happened during the Grammy pre-show. “It’s a big nothing,” Gardner says a source told him. Gardner also added that he was told that Killer Mike “may be released later tonight from the arena.” As of press time, official charges against Killer Mike have yet to be revealed.

Killer Mike had a tremendous start to the 2024 Grammys. During the pre-show awards, he picked up three awards, every one for which he was nominated. Not long after that, though, things took a turn, as he was spotted being taken away in handcuffs.
On X (formerly Twitter), The Hollywood Reporter‘s Chris Gardner shared a video of Mike, with his hands in cuffs and behind his back, being escorted through a Crypto.com Arena hallway by law enforcement. Gardner noted in a follow-up tweet, “An official tells someone on his team that it’s possible he may be released later tonight from the arena. Unclear if he’s being booked here and what he’s charged with. Trying to find out.”
In an additional update, Gardner conveyed that the situation appears to not be a big deal, tweeting, “Just spoke to an official who tells me it’s a misdemeanor and has nothing to do with anything that happened today here inside the arena. Likely he will be released once it’s sorted. ‘It’s a big nothing,’ source says.”
Recording Academy CEO Harvey Mason Jr. caught wind of what happened and was seen talking with Mike’s team and with officials. After a few minutes, Gardner noted, “Harvey Mason Jr is now headed backstage after spending time here talking to security and Killer Mike’s team. The scene by security has calmed but Mike is still detained back there.”
Gardner also said he attempted to get more information about the situation from somebody on Mike’s team, but they declined to comment.

The 2024 Grammys are just as nerve-wracking for musicians as it is for the team that makes the ceremony possible. Unfortunately, considering that it is music’s biggest, there is no margin for era. Sadly, the poor social media manager over at The Recording Academy is learning this the hard way.
As the rap categories were being announced, the organization’s social media team got one coveted winner wrong. In a screengrab captured by Pop Crave, The Recording Academy announced Nicki Minaj and Ice Spice’s “Barbie World” as the winner of the Best Rap Song. The only problem is, as the ceremony was being broadcast, Killer Mike was the actual winner.
The #GRAMMYs X account mistakenly announced “Barbie World” as the Best Rap Song winner, instead of “SCIENTISTS & ENGINEERS”. pic.twitter.com/ww6xPZybcv
Minaj’s die-hard fans, the Barbz, have already begun to slam The Recording Academy online for the mix-up. Some have even started conspiracy theories that Roc Nation pulled strings to get the win pulled due to Minaj’s ongoing beef with Megan Thee Stallion.
Although the record, which was featured on the Barbie movie soundtrack, the compilation has already pulled in other wins, including Best Song Written for Visual Media (for Billie Eilish’s “What Was I Made For?” and Best Compilation Soundtrack for Visual Media.

Music’s biggest night is here. The 2024 Grammys are proving to be a night to remember. So far, the ceremony has been filled with stunning performances and long-deserved wins. One of the lucky musicians taking home a coveted gramophone is Killer Mike.
But he isn’t taking home just one trophy. Killer Mike will be going home with three in total. That’s one for every category he was nominated for, including Best Rap Album for Michael, Best Rap Song for “Scientists & Engineers,” and Best Rap Performance (again for “Scientists & Engineers”).
During his final acceptance speech, Killer Mike didn’t play modestly. Instead, he leaned into the significant accomplishment, bragging about the feat. “That’s a sweep,” screened Killer Mike after taking the stage for the last time. The line was echoed by Silk Sonic at the 2022 ceremony.

Killer Mike’s last win at the Grammys was over 20 years ago. During the 45th annual ceremony, Killer Mike took his first Grammy in 2003 for Best Rap Performance By A Duo Or Group (“The Whole World”).
Killer Mike’s Michael was one of this year’s most nominated rap projects. Others nominated in the rap category included Drake, Doja, and Lil Durk.

The world has come to stand and acknowledge the 50-year mark of the assassination of a man who is defined as being the most influential civil rights leader in American history, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. On April 4, 1968, as he stood on the balcony of Lorraine Motel in Memphis, Dr. King was fatally struck with a bullet by James Earl Ray, an unlawful racist. The striking assassination of Dr. King follows a sturdy 14-year reign serving as a dominant figure in the civil rights movement fighting for the security of legal rights for African Americans. It was a fight drilled with nonviolence and civil disobedience, being burgeoned by the vile acts of racial segregation, disenfranchisement, and exploitation of all hanging from the centerfold of racism.
The powerfully symphonic voice of Dr. King in his iconic “I Have A Dream” speech delivered at the 1963 March on Washington sets the tone for emotional empowerment. It is currently the most sampled Dr. King audio recording in hip-hop history. In honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr and his sound legacy. Here are nine hip-hop songs sampled by the legendary leader’s voice.
1. Sadat X “Return of the Bang Bang” (2010)
Reigning from the silver-tongued posse who is bound to their divine blackness is Sadat X of Brand Nubian on the solo tip with “Return of the Bang Bang.” The unorthodox emcee takes to the mic to drop insight about his daily journey as a seasoned vet returning to the game. In his signature abstract style, Sadat uses Dr. King’s “I Have a Dream” passage to serve rightful diction in his tunnel of bars. “Return of the Bang Bang” is featured on Sadat’s 2010 sequel gem Wild Cowboys II.
2. Heavy D & the Boyz “A Better Land” (1989)
One of the golden era’s finest, the late Heavy D is pouring his soul out in rhyme in “A Better Land” with his boyz about improving the meager conditions of impoverished communities. The telling track starts with a sample of Dr. King’s “I Have A Dream” speech that ends with one of his most acquainted quotes, “We hold these truths to be self-evident that all men, are created equal.”
3. Edo G feat. Masta Ace “Wishing” (2004)
Donald Trump is not the first President of the United States to be highly scorned by most of his country. Back in 2004, George W. Bush was in office, turning America’s dream into a nightmare with his jest-like measures. Edo G and Masta Ace took to the mic to release their wishes while demanding intrinsic change in the American way. After Masta Ace crops the title of a dreamer, Dr. King’s infamous line about his dream for freedom and justice in Mississippi hoards the track.
4. Cyhi Da Prynce “Ring Bellz” (2010)
Cyhi Da Prynce is honoring his cultural edge through the barrels of black history in “Ring Bellz” a song from his 2010 mixtape Royal Flush. While mixing his braggadocios persona with black excellence, the G.O.O.D. music wordplayer takes it from Fredrick Douglass to Stokely Carmichael, with the profound words from Dr. King’s beloved speech leading the track.
5. Common feat. will.i.am “A Dream” (2006)
Chicago’s renowned poet in rhyme Common teamed up with will.i.am of The Black Eyed Peas for a true hip-hop measure that reflects on the progression and condition of blacks in a known racist America, the way Dr. King stood sturdy for titled “A Dream.” Owning the same desire for nation zenith, just as King, it was sensible for the abstract collab to start with King’s pacifying “We gonna work it out” saying.
6. Grandmaster Flash and The Furious Five “The King” (1988)
With Melle Mel being heralded as one of hip-hop’s earliest conscious rappers, the lingering legacy of Dr. King has certainly played a role during hip-hop’s infancy. The hip-hop pioneer rocks the mic with delight honoring the deeds of Dr. King by recognizing the Civil rights icon’s brightest accomplishments while calling for the bells of freedom. “He brought hope to the hopeless, strength to the weak.”
7. Wu-Tang Clan “Never Let Go” (2014)
Known for their supremely motivational rap hymns, the Wu-Tang Clan hit the masses with a dream driven tune in signature fashion. Docking off of their sixth studio album A Better Tomorrow is “Never Let Go” an ode to survival during challenging times. Before Masta Killa leads and after U-God anchors the track, a courteous potent chunk of Dr. King’s “I Have a Dream” speech is heard where the beloved leader makes one of his most bracing points, “For many of our white brothers, as evidenced by their presence here today, have come to realize that their destiny is tied up with our destiny. And they have come to realize that their freedom is inextricably bound to our freedom.”
8. Boogie Down Productions “Love’s Gonna Get’cha (Material Love)” (1990)
Emphasis is something KRS-One has mastered as a lyricist. Amid the prime of Boogie Down Productions‘ fourth studio album Edutainment comes its top single “Love’s Gonna Get’cha (Material Love),” a song that serves as a warning about the detrimental lust that comes with chasing after material things. To throw emphasis on “movin’ on,” the voice of Dr. King chanting the phrase from his final speech “I’ve Been to the Mountain Top.”
9. Immortal Technique feat. Chuck D, Brother Ali, and Killer Mike “Civil War” (2011)
Budding off of the musically factious Immortal Technique‘s 2011 compilation album The Martyr is “Civil War” featuring Chuck D, Brother Ali, and Killer Mike, an unapologetic effort to audibly express “trying to survive cultural assassination,” the great PE lead makes it clear in the chorus. The track samples a selection of King’s final speech, where the iconic leader encourages the destruction of fear in exchange for glory.
Dr. King’s call for sound justice fused into a faithful dream for African Americans has thrived its way into hip-hop culture out of the purpose of nature. The infancy of hip-hop culture is a result of movements that brewed during Dr. King’s time. Movements that were centered in the fight for justice and art of freedom such as the Black Panther Party and Black Arts Movement, who all commonly owned a desire to climb the path of racial justice. The youth of hip-hop’s beginnings dreamed of topnotch mobility out of the hood, reversing the culture of police brutality, and several cases of discrimination ceased. Now, since the culture has grown into a universal phenomenon, Dr. King’s dreamy element of justice is emblematic in hip-hop whenever he is sampled on a track.
After taking a break with Run The Jewels and El-P, Killer Mike decided to make a big comeback on his own this year. In fact, it had been an 11-year return in the making. His last solo effort was released on May 15, 2012 with R.A.P. Music. That was until June 16 of this year, when Mike unleashed perhaps his best record to date, with MICHAEL. It has done so well for the Georgia legend that is up for a handful of GRAMMY nominations.
It is easy to see why it could win Best Rap Album, Best Rap Song, and Best Rap Performance categories. There are so many fantastic records on this LP. “SCIENTISTS & ENGINEERS” is the key player here, but “RUN” with Young Thug is another fun one. The great additional tracks and remixes have also helped bolster the legitimacy around Mike’s self-titled tape.
Listen To “RUN (Damian “Jr. Gong” Marley Version)” By Killer Mike And Damian “Jr. Gong” Marley
Mike has redone “MOTHERLESS,” “DOWN BY LAW,” and now “RUN.” For the latter, he has brought on the reggae legend, Damian Marley. This new version keeps a similar rhythm to the original but relies more on drums and horns. If you pay close attention the beat’s pattern has a slight hint of Thugger’s “Wyclef Jean” from his 2016 project JEFFERY. You can check out the music video above.
What are your initial thoughts on this brand-new remix, “RUN (Damian “Jr. Gong” Marley Version),” by Killer Mike and Damian Marley? Do you prefer this rendition, or the original with Young Thug? Killer Mike has been nominated for multiple Grammy Awards, but the big one is Best Rap Album for his critically acclaimed release, Michael. Speaking with AllHipHop, Killer Mike is grateful but is now looking to get the win.
“I wanna win and I ain’t gonna lie or be shy about it. I wanna bring trophies home for Atlanta, for Hip-Hop, for my Granny, Miss Bettie and her daughter and my beloved and beautiful mother, Denise,” Killer Mike said.
In September, Killer Mike released the definitive version of his acclaimed 2023 album MICHAEL DELUXE on 2xLP vinyl, CD, and digital. The album – now expanded to 17 tracks on the physical editions and 18 tracks digitally – arrives alongside a video for the new song “YES”. The album details were announced last week with the release of “Maynard Vignette,” a huge multi-generational Atlanta anthem with features from T.I., JID, and Jacquees, with Mike explaining that “MICHAEL was originally longer and now we’re starting to release the rest of it. These songs are some of my favorites from the album sessions, but we needed more time to get them the way we imagined them. We finished three of them in time to make the vinyl and one more for the digital.”
Killer Mike hosted a global album celebration party for his fans on his YouTube channel on the eve of the album last night where he premiered WHAT MADE MICHAEL (A Conversation with Elliott Wilson), a mini-doc where he breaks down his album and gives fans a guided tour of his upbringing in Atlanta, followed by the premiere of the music video for his new single “YES.” Mike also joined Anthony Valadez and KCRW for a special evening at Apogee Studio in Los Angeles that aired as a Morning Becomes Eclectic session yesterday to celebrate the release (watch it here). This Sunday Mike will host a Record Store Revival at Rough Trade NYC at 4pm, an in-conversation event moderated by Carrie Colliton (Co-President of Record Store Day) followed by an album signing event for fans in attendance. The conversation from the event will also livestream via his and Rough Trade’s YouTube + META platforms, so that his fans around the world can join – tune in here.
